Sultan Ahmed the dacoit filmmaker
superindrajit22 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Sultan Ahmed is one filmmaker whose films are mostly dacoit dramas dealing with injustice and revenge. His films are nothing great but they are decent for a 70s movie. Ganga Ki Saugandh was a hit for this main reason, it was perfect for a 70s movie. This also explain's why Ahmed's Daata was a flop and why his Jai Vikraanta(1995) was a washout.

Ganga Ki Saugandh has the typical storyline of an individual who is thrown out of his village for going against the powerful and corrupt landlord of the area. The individual watches his mother die and he is extremely unhappy. It is then he becomes a dacoit and decides to take revenge against the landlord who was responsible for this. But little does he know that the landlord has powerful connections and he has the police chase the individual down so he is not in danger.

Direction by Sultan Ahmed is good because he has handled the film well despite some trademark flaws like drag. The clashes between the naive Amitabh and the evil Amjad Khan is well handled, the romance between Amitabh and Rekha is well handled to an extent, the action scenes and the misunderstandings by the villagers nearing the end is also well handled. Howevever, the film slows down before the interval and it drags showing an overdose of melodrama. Also, the injustice is shown in a clichéd manner not explaining why the villagers are so cruel to Ganga when he didn't do anything to them. The mom death scene is upsetting and extremely cruel.

Amitabh Bachchan does a good job as the innocent and naive Ganga and his transformation to a dacoit is well executed. As the revenge taking bandit, he does a good job timing expressions properly. As usual, he does a brilliant job. However, compared to his other performances in most of the 1978 releases, this is one of his weaker acts. Rekha does a sincere job though her chemistry with Amitabh isn't as good as some of their other films. Amjad Khan has done a lot of roles like this but this is one of other villain roles but it doesn't look like a challenge for him to play the sinister villain. The rest provide decent support.

On the whole, Ganga Ki Saugandh is one of Amitabh's lesser known films directed by veteran dacoit filmmaker Sultan Ahmed. The film is good for its time but such films are outdated if they release now.

Last Dacoit!

In "Mother India", though the movie belonged to Nargis, Sunil Dutt (as he son), becomes a Dacoit. This role was hit and Sunil Datt revived role of Dacoit in "Mujhe Jeene Do". This was trend setter to Dacoit Movies. But this movie is made almost at end of the trend.

Amitabh Plays a poor villager, Birju who is made to become a dacoit courtacy evil Thakur, Amzad Khan. The movie is just a run of mill stuff. But, there are good performances by Amitabh Bachchan , Rekha and I S Jouhar.

The movie has a haunting melodious sound "Maano to main ganga maa hoon na maano to bahata paani...". And this song is the most memorable thing about the movie.

My rating is 7/10.
