Derivitive

Warning: Spoilers
Flat costume thriller which works up to an hysterical climax. It is also very derivative , especially of Rebecca and Jane Eyre.

**SPOILER WARNING** G H A S T L Y!!!

Warning: Spoilers
What's wrong with this? Mr. Andrews, the ham's ham. If you like ham, not the salted pork variety but the oversalted British Middle Class wannabe Gentleman, you'll probably like this. I mean, people said they liked the Scarlett Pimpernel (ugh!) and Ivanhoe (more ugh!), so obviously someone out there likes him. This story had potential but Mr. Andrew's hammy emoting makes it ghastly. Mercifully, there's no video, but if you see it in the PBS reruns...be advised: it's ghastly!

Anthony NOT a hammy actor
loofahcat-120 September 2005
Okay, the movie is pretty bad. But to disparage Anthony Andrews is just plain ludicrous. He didn't write the story, he didn't direct the movie, he merely played a character in the movie. Apparently the person who commented previously hates Anthony Andrews for some strange reason. That is his or her problem. Anthony Andrews is a wonderful actor(see Brideshead Revisited, The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Lighthorsemen and others). He does not deserve the abuse poured upon him. All actors make poor choices in movies and this just happens to be one of Anthony's. This movie is based on a Gothic novel. Having been into Gothic novels in my younger years, I can attest that they all have basically the same kind of plot line. This one is no exception. Even though the movie is rather poorly done, it's still worth a look if only for a chance to see Anthony Andrews.
