You can probably unpack that Pb&j, chips, and juice box: It sounds like “John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch” isn’t coming back to Netflix — or even to Comedy Central.
Mulaney has called the (excellent) Netflix variety series for children his “favorite thing I ever did,” a sentiment he echoed on “My Next Guest with David Letterman and John Mulaney” — the episode of Letterman’s long-form interview show premiered April 30, 2024 on Netflix.
Letterman asked Mulaney what that ranking suggests for the future.
“I loved doing it and, you know, Netflix was like, ‘Oh, cool, you gonna do standup again?’” Mulaney said.
Mulaney’s line got a laugh from the Chicago audience, but it didn’t sound like a joke. In the comic’s retelling, it is clear the streamer had pretty quickly moved on from “The Sack Lunch Bunch” and focused on the comedian’s bread and butter: stand-up.

Brendan Fraser is accustomed to being underestimated Until recently, he was never looked at as that kind of actor – the kind that’s considered a major contender during awards season. That all changed thanks to his seminal Oscar-winning performance in “The Whale” (from director Darren Aronofsky). But the truth is that he’s been a quality actor for a long time, and if his Big Moment wasn’t necessarily inevitable, it was perhaps overdue.
The actor who was born on December 3, 1968 in Indianapolis, Indiana has been best known until now for starring in the “The Mummy” franchise. But Fraser has been a consistent presence on screens big and small for three decades, going back to his days headlining agreeably lowbrow comedies like “Encino Man” from 1992 and “Airheads” in [94. He also had a role in a Best Picture Oscar winner (2004’s “Crash”) and a pair of dramas that drew universal critical praise (“Gods and Monsters” from 1998 and “The Quiet American” from 2002). If Fraser ran into a bit of a slump over the past 15 years or so,...

Marnie Stern has shared the single “Believing Is Seeing,” another preview of The Comeback Kid — her first new album in a decade.
“Believing Is Seeing” begins with a one-note guitar riff that, for a second, sounds a bit like if the intro to Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Maps” had just crushed a Red Bull. But soon enough, the song becomes entirely Stern’s own as she proclaims its opening lines: “This place is cold!/ I can’t hear you!”
In a press release, Stern said that “‘Believing Is Seeing’ is about trying to build a world of music through different sounds, and how you can create your own cohesive universe through these sounds.” You can almost hear her build her own universe as the two-minute song evolves from an eerie monotone to a technicolor blast, throwing in some rigid chords along the way as if to keep herself from spinning out of control entirely.

It’s been a whole 10 years since we last got a new album from Marnie Stern, but that changes this fall: The guitar wiz has announced her next LP, aptly titled The Comeback Kid, which is out November 3rd via Joyful Noise Recordings. Along with the news, she’s shared its lead single “Plain Speak.”
In the years since her last LP The Chronicles of Marnia, Stern’s kept herself busy around the clock by raising two kids and playing in The 8G Band on The Late Show with Seth Meyers. Thankfully, the time away from the studio didn’t dim the spark that put her on the map in the late 2000s, as she naturally re-adopted her trademark finger-tapped guitar shredding and whimsical math rock melodies.
“When I would think, ‘Oh, is that too, too weird?’ I’d remember I’m allowed to do whatever I want! This is mine.

Based on Gold Derby’s odds, one of the absolute tightest 2023 Creative Arts Emmy races involves Best Variety Special Writing contenders Chris Rock and John Mulaney, both of whom have previously conquered the category and are now facing off for the first time ever. Having both pushed their comedy to new levels of boldness in their respective Netflix specials “Selective Outrage” and “Baby J,” they provide voters with a truly tough choice when it comes to honoring the most impressive writing of the year.
This contest is made even more interesting by the fact that Rock and Wanda Sykes (“I’m an Entertainer”) are competing against each other after jointly earning four writing nominations and one win for “The Chris Rock Show” over two decades ago. Also included in this lineup are the sketch comedy special “Would It Kill You to Laugh?” and the career retrospective “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love....

John Mulaney, tall child, is headed back to Netflix. The comedian will return to the streamer next month with a brand new stand-up special titled "John Mulaney: Baby J." Mulaney has a well-established relationship with Netflix, having headlined two other stand-up specials there — "The Comeback Kid" in 2015 and "Kid Gorgeous" in 2018. He also appeared in the hilarious, weird, very silly special "John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch" in 2019 — the same special that gave us the gift of Jake Gyllenhaal as Mr. Music.
This new stand-up special promises to feature material concerning Mulaney's life, which has undergone a shift over the last few years — he went through a divorce, go sober from his addictions, and had a child with partner Olivia Munn. Mulaney has been touring for the last year, and it's safe to assume much of his current tour material will find its way into this new special.

John Mulaney’s latest standup special will premiere next month on Netflix. John Mulaney: Baby J debuts globally April 25 on the streamer.
Baby J is Mulaney’s third Netflix stand-up special following The Comeback Kid (2015) and Kid Gorgeous (2018). His variety special John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch premiered on Netflix in 2019.
The show, directed by Alex Timbers with music by Talking Heads’ David Byrne, was shot in Boston’s Symphony Hall in February 2023.
Baby J is Mulaney’s first Netflix special since leaving rehab in 2021. The Emmy-winning comedian, writer and actor addressed the issue on Late Night With Seth Meyers in 2021. “Do you know how bad of a drug problem you have to have that when you open a door and see people gathered, your first thought is, ‘This is an intervention about my drug problem. There’s no other reason people would be behind the door,’” he told Meyers.

The Liberty LP has proven to be exceptionally fertile territory for Lindi Ortega, who is preparing to release Liberty: Piano Songbook, a track-by-track instrumental reinterpretation of the 2018 collection, on January 25th.
Ortega already released a batch of stripped-down Liberty recordings late last summer, the three-song Liberty: Parkhill Sessions Ep, which were recorded in her native Canada. The Piano Songbook is more ambitious, pulling 12 of the original album’s 15 tracks and reimagining them with the help of multi-instrumentalist Robbie Crowell (Kesha, Midland) and Liberty producer Skyler Wilson. Before jumping in the pool for the finals of the 200-meter butterfly, Olympic gold superstar Michael Phelps famously mean-mugged his rival, Chad le Clos. The U.S. Women's Swim Team? They were a little less serious. In the minutes leading up to the the 4x200-meter women's freestyle relay in Rio on Wednesday night, Katie Ledecky, Allison Schmitt, Maya Dirado and Leah Smith goofed off in the sidelines, making silly faces while snapping selfies. Their adorable antics were captured on camera - much to the praise of fans online. About to race for gold, but first let me take a selfie pic.

2015 is over and it was one helluva year for the movies. Box office records were smashed. Veteran filmmakers returned with a vengeance. Stars were born. Now it's time to take a few steps back, look at what transpired and reflect...in list-form. Yes, it's time to do what we've done in years past and select the 10 people who "won" the movies in 2015. These actors, actresses, filmmakers, and entities represent the cream of the crop, the people who dominated this year in one way or another, overcoming great odds or simply wowing us with their output. Let's begin. 10. Ridley Scott: The Comeback Kid After nearly a decade of disappointments and misfires, the legendary director of Alien and Blade Runner delivered his best film in decades with The...

The awards race has officially begun as the Golden Globes nominations were announced this morning. While there’s a lot the Hollywood Foreign Press gets right, there’s always a few nominations that leave us scratching our heads. With questionable practice of splitting dramatic films and lumping musicals or comedies in another (rarely are they either a musical or a comedy), we get ten films nominated for best picture, and a whole lot of acting categories.
Todd Haynes' Carol got a lot of love in the nominations, as expected, and The Big Short is gaining momentum thanks to acting nods for Christian Bale and Steve Carell, but the Globes proved they have more than a few categories to keep us on our toes when it comes to determining who’ll come out on top.

Now the streaming service is contributing to a growing arms race to land top comics in the increasingly competitive world of stand-up specials. By year's end, Netflix, which debuted John Mulaney's The Comeback Kid on Nov. 13, will have released 18 original stand-up specials, with comics including Aziz Ansari, Chris Tucker and Chelsea Peretti. And while many credit the 69 million-member service for jump-starting the market, others,

Netflix streaming has a wealth of great stand up specials for fans of comedy. Lately the service has been even releasing Netflix Original specials from famous comedians. It is almost overwhelming how much hilariously good stand up comedy Netflix has at the moment.
If you haven’t taken the time to watch some of these hour long specials from greats like Aziz Ansari or Mike Birbiglia, here is a list of the 6 best currently available. But don’t worry, more are on the way to the streaming service over the next year.
Mike Birbiglia – My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend
Mike Birbiglia has had several a few different specials as well as a film he wrote/directed/starred in titled “Sleepwalk With Me” based on his one man comedy show. But “My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend” is easily his best and one of the best specials ever.

"I like using references when, hopefully, the fact that I'm using it is what's funny, not the reference itself," John Mulaney told Vulture in an interview earlier this week. And you can see him put that philosophy to the test in his new hour special, The Comeback Kid, which hits Netflix on Friday. The best example is a bit about Back to the Future, a movie that maybe makes no sense. No, it's not crazy to believe in time travel; it's crazy to believe that a kid could be friends with some old scientist and everyone would be chill about it.

Did somebody order a testosterone infusion? This week’s Grey’s Anatomy not only featured Derek’s return to Grey Sloan but the introduction of True Blood’s Kevin Alejandro in the potentially recurring role of police captain Dan Pruitt and Hawaii Five-0’s young Steve McGarrett (Taylor John Smith) as a guest flirtation for Stephanie. But the hour was hardly all McDreamy charm and longing glances. Read on, and I’ll tell you the whole sad story.

The following recap, by the very definition of the word “recap,” contains spoilers from Under the Dome‘s Season 2 finale.
CBS’ Under the Dome, as Season 2 drew to a close, kinda sorta evoked Stephen King’s The Shining — and in doing so, the summertime drama took its first major step into channeling some of Mr. King’s horror themes.
The finale also teased (barely) what any possible third season would look like.

Laura, played very briefly by Ruth Ann Llorens (The Comeback Kid) is a talented high school track runner who meets her demise during a race, where she collapses and dies on the spot in front of her whole school (how embarrassing! Even more so due to the fact she won!) Fingers are immediately pointed towards Coach Michaels, played by the ever charming Christopher George (City of the Living Dead, The Exterminator) because he is a determined and often ruthless son of a gun! A couple of months pass and Laura’s sister Anne, played by Patch Mackenzie (Serial, It’s Alive 3) returns home from the Navy to honour her sister’s graduation.

The Comeback Kid remains confident. After partially tearing her Acl in a training accident on Nov. 19, downhill racing champ Lindsey Vonn told Today that she is guardedly optimistic she'll be ready to compete in the 2014 Winter Olympics, which begins in just 72 days. I hope I can continue racing." Lauer asked Vonn, who was in the midst of yet another comeback following a serious knee injury earlier this year,...

Disney's Wreck-It Ralph maintains its momentum at the UK box office as half-term gave a lift to children's films
The winner
It lost the best animated feature Oscar to Disney stablemate Brave, but Wreck-It Ralph scored a victory at the UK weekend box-office. Takings for the film were almost the same as the previous weekend (£3.42m v £3.44m), as families slotted in a cinema visit before the end of school half-term. Over the 10 days of the school holiday (15-24 February), the video-game-themed adventure grossed an impressive £11.54m, for a total so far of £18.62m. Audiences will decrease now children are back at school, but Wreck-It Ralph should bump along for a few more weeks and is well placed to overtake the totals for 2012's Madagascar 3 (£22.74m) and Brave (£22.17m).

I’ve alluded to this before, but just so we’re clear, I really didn’t like “The Comeback Kid,” the 11th episode of Parks and Recreation’s fourth season, and the first to premiere in 2012. Seeing as season three is about as flawless as TV comedy gets, the comparative minor missteps of the first half of season four didn’t seem like that big a deal, but “The Comeback Kid” was the first time I ever worried about how much longer the truly great period of Parks would last. The episode centered around two tropes I hate in sitcoms: building stories around a single event that must go absolutely perfect -but inevitably turns out to be a disaster- and characters being written as if their major personality flaw is their only trait. While the episode’s madcap ice-capades almost salvaged the entire thing, it was accomplished by having everyone...

“How a Bill Becomes a Law” is about as shticky as we’ve seen an episode of Parks and Recreation get. Leslie spends most of the episode butting half-permed heads with a fecal-obsessed fellow councilmen, Ben and April have the world’s most inert road trip, Gerry answers 9-1-1 calls, and Ron puts on princess makeup. You know things are heading into crazy-town when Anne, one of the few voices of reason in Pawnee, doesn’t so much as make an appearance.
Parks and Recreation has always been a silly show, but the exact degree of silliness often changes week to week. One of last season’s more divisive episodes, “The Comeback Kid”, reached Springfieldian levels of zaniness, probably because it was written by longtime Simpsons scribe Mike Scully. It was jarring, particularly as a follow to the one-two emotional punches of “The Trial of Leslie Knope” and “Citizen...

When Adam Scott joined Parks and Recreation at the end of Season 2, he faced a daunting task: make his straight man Pawnee newcomer, Ben Wyatt, seem funny opposite larger than life characters like Leslie Knope and Ron Swanson. There is a sweet spot in the world of sitcoms when writers find a formula that works for their characters, and then they take that formula and bend it everywhichway hoping for the most hilarious of all possible outcomes. For Parks and Recreation, it's the same equation as the Bad News Bears. Somewhere near the end of season one, the writers realized that Leslie Knope is not a Michael Scott. I mean, there are Michael Scottesque elements of ridiculousness about her, but where Michael Scott repelled his co-workers, Leslie Knope effortlessly pulls her co-workers into her orbit. She is the sun and her gravitational pull is unbreakable.
So the best episodes of Parks feature April and Andy and Tom and Ron and Donna whirling around her, collectively trying to accomplish the goal she's set for them, and failing spectacularly. Like the Bad News Bears, they always succeed in the end,...

A quick review of tonight's "Parks and Recreation" coming up just as soon as we have a philosophical difference about what constitutes a law... "The Comeback Kid" took the long way around to get to where we all knew where it was going (Ben as Leslie's campaign manager) and was a little strained in spots (the Pistol Pete scenes never really clicked, for instance), but it had several things working strongly in its favor. First, Chris performing a one-man intervention for Ben was a terrific B-story. We've seen Adam Scott do the sad clown thing very well in the past (both...

Romney. Gingrich. Huntsman. Perry. Paul. There are so many names floating around the world of politics, we’re just going to say Knope to it all this week. After a month-long hiatus, Parks and Recreation returns to NBC on Thursday with a new episode, “The Comeback Kid,” in which City Council candidate Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) tries to kick-start her campaign with a flashy event. Meanwhile, someone very close to Leslie is launching his own campaign. Of sadness. And it may require an intervention. You see, Ben (Adam Scott) seems to have found a new mate and she goes by the name of Clay.
