A new crane called Cranky arrives at the docks and causes trouble for Thomas and Percy, but when a tramp steamer runs aground and causes problems for the new crane, it's Thomas and Percy who save the day.
Percy is trying to cheer himself up by competing in the best-dressed station competition after being stuck at the harbor. But a ram he's forced to shoo off the railway turns up again later, and may cause trouble.
Percy is complaining because he feels overworked. The other engines were unsympathetic, but their attitudes change after Percy is involved in a disastrous accident at the coal mine.
Toby is by the river just in time to see that the dam is breaking, so is quick to leave to give out a warning. But he is forced to cross the bridge over the flooded river when it breaks and drifts off toward a waterfall.
Stepney goes to help Toby and Mavis and works hard, even taking a special train. But he starts his return late and follows a point set up wrong so that he ends up lost - and in the area he fears the most, the diesels' scrapyard.
Thomas takes a slow delivery of fish to Henry but doesn't get to give him the warning that no one bigger than him can take the sunken rails. Henry is in such a hurry to deliver the fish that he doesn't hear and heads for the water.
Thomas and Percy find an old coach in the scrapyard that is to be broken up. Thomas and Percy promise to find a use for her but they aren't sure what she could be used for. A fire at a workman's hut brings up a possible solution.
When Harold the Helicopter takes an important visitor around the island, the engines think he is going to replace them. These rumours only cause confusion and delay.
Oliver wishes for more exercise, but doesn't say so and deals with his misery by being too rough with the freight-trucks so gets his wish when he's asked to deliver mail instead. But a stuck signal sends him crashing into an abandoned area.
Mrs Kyndley's daughter is getting married but she forgot to make a good luck package. Percy promises to find something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.
Sir Topham Hatt and his family go a holiday away from the rails. This holiday quickly becomes more of an adventure when things begin to go wrong. Meanwhile, Thomas is worried that Annie and Clarabel will be turned into beach huts.
Percy is bored of shunting trucks at the coal mine and wishes for something exciting to happen. Surprise comes sooner than Percy expected when his trucks break away on a hill.
Toad the brakevan is tired of going backwards all the time and wishes to go forwards for a change. The silly trucks grant him his wish and teach him to be careful what he wishes for.
Duncan makes fun of Peter Sam's accident by saying he'll be haunted by his damaged freight-cars, and Rusty tells him a ghost-story and, when he acts bored, Peter Sam has Duncan's crew help make him think he's being chased by the ghost.
Rusty is worried about a boulder that appears to be watching him. One day, the boulder falls off it's ledge and chases Rusty and his friends down the track.
