Exclusive: Greg Silverman and Jon Berg of Stampede Ventures have snapped up rights to screenwriter Umair Aleem’s new action-adventure spec script The Paladin, which is being eyed as a franchise-starter, unfolding into a much larger, expansive universe.
Billed as Doctor Strange meets Unforgiven, The Paladin centers on a broken-down, last-of-his-kind warrior mage who undertakes a final quest to protect a child who has the power to save or destroy our world.
Silverman and Berg will produce the feature with a plan to go into production next year. The packaging of a star and filmmaker are underway.
The Paladin comes on the heels of Aleem’s hard-action feature Kate, a 2017 Black List script, which premiered on Netflix in September starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Woody Harrelson and Mike Martineau. Kate was the most watched film on any streaming service for 12 straight days. Aleem also adapted Danger Girl and wrote the sequel to Mile 22 for STX.

Rodney James Alcala, the so-called “Dating Game Killer” who was on California’s death row from Orange County, died of natural causes at 1:43 a.m. on July 24, 2021 at a hospital in the community.
In 1968, Alcala was a contestant on the game show The Dating Game. Host Jim Lange introduced him as a “successful photographer who got his start when his father found him in the darkroom at the age of 13, fully developed. Between takes you might find him skydiving or motorcycling.”
He won the competition, but his “date” refused to go out with him because she found him “creepy.”
Alcala was sent to Death Row in Orange County in 1980 for the 1979 kidnapping and murder of 12-year-old Robin Samsoe. But that conviction was reversed in 1984 by the California Supreme Court, and Alcala was granted a new trial.
In 1986, he was sentenced to death a second time for the Samsoe murder.

A clever example of creativity thriving within the strict protocols of the coronavirus pandemic, tense confinement thriller “Oxygen” plays like “Buried” in outer space: a ticking-clock sci-fi survival drama centered on a single character (“Inglourious Basterds” star Mélanie Laurent) trapped in a spiffy, coffin-like cryochamber with critically low reserves of breathable air. The blank-brained “bioform” awakens ahead of schedule, sealed in some kind of futuristic membrane, with only a helpful Hal 9000-like talking computer called Milo to assist her.

October doesn’t have to be the exclusive month of chilling, thrilling films, and no one recognizes that more acutely than horror streamer Shudder, which recently announced a cheeky “Halfway to Halloween Month” (read: April), dedicated to the kind of fresh genre programming usually relegated to autumn. Included in that stacked assortment of new programming is Corinna Faith’s “The Power,” an alluring-sounding thriller that joins the streaming outfit’s steadily growing body of original films.
An entrant in the 2018 edition of the Brit List, the much-anticipated period thriller uses real history to unspool a supernatural thriller. Set in the early winter of 1974, the film picks up during the “Three-Day Week” period in the UK, during which a combination of power conservation and striking miners plunged the country into a planned, partial blackout for over two months. Against that already unnerving backdrop, Faith readies a story that would be scary,...

Elisabeth Moss has joined the cast of Barry Levinson’s feature “Francis and the Godfather.” The film also stars Oscar Isaac and Jake Gyllenhaal and tells the story of the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 masterpiece “The Godfather.”
Moss will play Eleanor Coppola, Francis’ wife, in the film. Isaac is playing Coppola, and Gyllenhaal is playing producer Robert Evans.
“Francis and The Godfather” is based on a Black List script by Andrew Farotte that has been redeveloped with Levinson and dives into how Coppola and Paramount Pictures exec Evans had very different movies in mind in the process that led to making the film based on Mario Puzo’s book.
Of course, that process is ripe with drama, including the gamble of casting an increasingly unpredictable Marlon Brando and finding a relatively unproven lead in Al Pacino. Despite all the butting heads and egos, “The Godfather” stands as one...

In “Palmer,” Justin Timberlake taps into his roots, headlining the inverse of last year’s “Hillbilly Elegy,” in which a Southern boy who went off to Yale looked back on his origins to explain the red-state attitudes that look so alien to conservatives. Here, Timberlake delivers a beer-chugging, pickup-driving, fight-picking portrait of what he might have become had he not left Tennessee at 12 to appear on “The All-New Mickey Mouse Club.” Not him, per se, but picture a talent who never got the chance to broaden his horizons. He might turn out like the leathery loner Timberlake portrays in this inspirational feature.

Doctor Strange raked in over $200 million during its domestic run, with a global total of over $675 million, so it shouldn’t have come as any surprise that Doctor Strange 2 eventually happened, but Marvel really took their time making the official announcement. Never fear, though, Benedict Cumberbatch is returning as Stephen Strange.

According to Charles Murphy of Murphy’s Multiverse, Disney and Marvel Studios have begun work on an Ironheart project, which isn’t too surprising. After all, ever since Tony Stark’s sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame there’s been an Iron Man-shaped hole in the McU that Riri Williams could fill nicely.
For those not in the know, Williams/Ironheart was first introduced in 2016 in Marvel Comics’ Invincible Iron Man. She’s a genius MIT student who reverse engineers an Iron Man-like suit of armor and begins to fight crime. Recognizing her skills, intelligence and seeing a little of his own personality in her, Stark agrees to assist with her superhero career (even going so far as to create an AI version of himself for her to use).
A few years back, word had it that there was an Ironheart script written by Jada Rodriguez on the famous Black List, which...

Like Michael Corleone dreaming of a life with Kay, Hollywood may never be able to go back to the way things were in the 1970s… but they can make movies about what is generally viewed as their second golden age! Fresh off news that Ben Affleck will direct a movie about the making of Chinatown, another Paramount Pictures masterpiece of the New Hollywood era is getting its own film with Barry Levinson’s Frances and The Godfather. And now Jake Gyllenhaal and Oscar Isaac are climbing aboard, with the latter playing Francis Ford Coppola.
The news comes out of Deadline, which reported Levinson is working from his own rewrite of a Black List script by Andrew Farotte about the legendary battles to get made what is now considered by many to be the greatest American film ever produced. The success of Coppola’s adaptation of Mario Puzo’s sprawling source...
