Furiosa fired up CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday.
Warner Bros. Pictures unveiled a sneak peek at five minutes of footage of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga inside Caesars Palace during its studio presentation with the help of director George Miller and his stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth to help pump the upcoming release for theater owners.
Warner Bros. will release Furiosa on May 24, following the film’s world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Starring Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth, Furiosa finds Miller returning to the dystopian world he created more than 30 years ago with Mad Max. It follows a young Furiosa (Taylor-Joy) after she’s snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of the great Biker Horde led by the Warlord of Dementus (Hemsworth). Furiosa must withstand many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

Before Focus Features released Edgar Wright’s neo-noir thriller Last Night in Soho in October 2021, the filmmaker showed a cut to pal George Miller. The Australian director was so struck by star Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance that he went back to Wright with an idea.
“I said, ‘Gee, she’d be good for…,’” detailed Miller, who then said Wright interjected before he could finish the thought. “[He said], ‘Do it, do it. She’s great.’” Miller took Wright’s concise advice and cast Taylor-Joy in the title role of Warner Bros. Pictures’ Furiosa, the newest installment of his blockbuster Mad Max franchise. She plays a young woman in a dystopian universe who was snatched from home only to fall into the hands of the great Biker Horde led by the Warlord of Dementus, played by Chris Hemsworth. Furiosa is then forced to withstand many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

Mad Max is roaring back to the Croisette.
Nine years after George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road tore up Cannes as the diesel-fueled opener in 2015, the director’s follow-up, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, will also have its world premiere, out of competition, in Cannes.
Anya Taylor-Joy stars as the titular Furiosa, the character played by Charlize Theron in Fury Road. The prequel follows the young Furiosa after she is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus, who goes to war with Fury Road tyrant Immortan Joe. While the two battle for dominance, Furiosa must survive and piece together the means to find her way home. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke co-star.

Grant Page, the Australian stunt icon who performed in and coordinating stunts for the original Mad Max, sequel Beyond Thunderdome, the upcoming prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and more than 100 other films and TV series, died Thursday in a car crash. He was 85.
His son, Leroy Page, told Daily Mail Australia that his father hit a tree while he was driving near his home in Kendall, New South Wales. “He died in very high spirits, and he was very motivated,” the younger Page told the paper. “He was very happy.”
A legend of Aussie cinema, Page worked with his Oscar-winning countryman George Miller on the 1979 action classic Mad Max, which introduced the world to Mel Gibson. He performed and served as stunt coordinator on that gas-guzzling post-apocalyptic thriller as well as its 1985 second sequel Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, which also starred Tina Turner. This article contains spoilers for "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" season 3, episode 2, "Paths Unknown."
The three-episode premiere of the third season of "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" offers us two episodes focusing on Omega and Crosshair and their travails on Mount Tantiss, but the middle episode gives us a look at what Hunter and Wrecker are doing as they tear the galaxy apart searching for Omega. Naturally, they find themselves on the trail of the Imperial Scientists and make their way to an abandoned facility. It's bombed out and abandoned (much like Kenari was in "Andor"), so the pair hunt for clues about where Dr. Hemlock and his science team went next.
While they're on this mysterious planet, Hunter and Wrecker find a group of clone cadets who had been left behind. The whole situation gives off a bit of a vibe like "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome," although there are...

It was South Australia’s last drive-in cinema – a scene in Priscilla was even filmed there. The historic screen lasted 50 years but couldn’t survive furious winds
Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email
The closure of a drive-in rarely makes the news but Coober Pedy’s is no ordinary drive-in. Since it was built by volunteers in 1965 it has served as a meeting point for the remote opal mining community, itself immortalised on film in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. For decades miners turned up in their utes, still filled with mining equipment and gelignite. As beer was sold at the drive-in, the operators had to ban patrons from bringing along explosives.
But curtains have now closed on South Australia’s last drive-in after furious winds reaching almost 120km/h ripped through the town on 15 November, leaving the screen in tatters.

If you’re a fan of Mel Gibson’s classic action flicks, be sure to stream them before they leave Max at the end of August.

The original Max series “Full Circle” debuts on July 13. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the new drama investigates a kidnapping gone wrong in New York, revealing the secrets and lies of multiple characters. Or as the trailer warns: “Everything is connected.” The six-episode limited series stars Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, and Dennis Quaid.
Watch the “Full Circle” trailer:
The four-part documentary “Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York” is set in the early 1990s as the AIDS crisis worsens. The media’s distorted coverage of the gay victims, coupled with the homophobic biases of the criminal justice system, undermine the investigation. The docuseries — which premieres on Max on July 9 — illustrates how the LGBTQ+ community fought to solve the murders and demand attention for those murdered.

Bet you weren’t expecting the eyebrow-raising TV news of the day to involve a new adaptation of beloved children’s author Enid Blyton’s Famous Five series. But the surprising twist in the BBC’s announcement today didn’t concern the bestselling series of whimsical, jolly-hockey-sticks children’s adventure novels from the 1940s-1960s – rather the creator behind this new series: Nicolas Winding Refn.
Considering this Danish director is famous for stylish but graphically violent films like The Neon Demon, Only God Forgives and Drive, The Famous Five will be somewhat of a left turn for him.
The series will have three 90-minute episodes drawing on Blyton’s 21 Famous Five novels, which detailed the adventures of five daring young explorers – Julian, Dick, Anne, George and their dog Timmy – as they spend their school holidays gallivanting around the English countryside and coastline, solving mysteries, finding treasure and catching criminals. Maybe it comes from being a New Yorker for 20-plus years, but I was much more creeped out by the undying rats and roaches littering the streets of an abandoned Manhattan than the ever-present zombies who populate The Walking Dead: Dead City, a been-there, screamed-at-that spinoff of the horror franchise that has seen better days. It’s obviously scary any time characters descend into infested subway or sewer tunnels, and transforming an iconic arena into a staging ground for post-apocalyptic mayhem is an inspired touch. (If you haven’t seen Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.) What Dead City lacks is a compelling human element. Even though I suppose I’d follow the ferocious warrior Maggie (Lauren Cohan) anywhere, her conflict with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), the reformed — or is he? — villain who slaughtered her beloved husband Glenn back in the day, has grown awfully tired. And yet that reprise is at...

In addition to her storied musical career, the late rock legend Tina Turner may have the best run of movie character names of all time. She only played someone else on screen three times in her life, but each occasion was memorable (and memorably named). From The Acid Queen in Ken Russell's "Tommy" to Aunty Entity in "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" to The Mayor in "Last Action Hero," Turner's short-lived cinematic career was defined by roles that felt like they were crafted just for her — with stylish names to match.
Turner's biggest film role came via George Miller, who really did craft the role of the third "Mad Max" film's villain around Turner. According to a retrospective written for NME in honor of the film's 35th anniversary, Miller and co-writer Terry Hayes made up the role for Turner after Miller was captivated by her after seeing her in a British TV interview.

I’ve been a fan of Tina Turner — the electrifying rock and soul goddess who died Wednesday at 83 after several lifetimes’ worth of legendary performances — for as long as I can remember. Probably since “Nutbush City Limits” hit the airwaves when I was a kid and those swaggering guitar riffs and Moog synthesizer sirens sunk into my bones.
I still can’t hear that song, or other early classics I discovered later, like the volcanic “River Deep — Mountain High,” or Turner’s cover of the Creedence Clearwater Revival hit “Proud Mary,” with its teasing slow start and Richter scale-busting explosion into hyper-speed frenzy, without wanting to drop everything and dance.
But I only ever saw her once in concert.
That was at London’s Wembley Arena in June 1987, a month after the U.K. paperback release of her autobiography, I, Tina, written with Kurt Loder. A friend in marketing at...

Tina Turner was, by all accounts, simply the best. Not just as a musician, where she released unforgettable hits like "Proud Mary" and "What's Love Got to Do With It?", but also as an actor. You probably remember her scene-stealing, villainous turn in the classic post-apocalyptic action thriller "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome," where she played a woman trying to reboot the world by bringing barbaric capitalism and grotesque industry back to the wastelands.
Auntie Entity was certainly Turner's most memorable role and even won her an NAACP Image Award for Best Actress, but the singing sensation did have an acting career beyond "Thunderdome." You can find her in musical classics like "Tommy" and musical not-so-classics like "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," two films that emphasized her titanic celebrity as a musician. She was also the subject of the Oscar-nominated biopic "What's Love Got to Do With It," which...

There's a lot that can be said about Tina Turner. The music legend, who passed away on May 24th at the age of 83, had been dubbed the "Queen of Rock n' Roll" thanks to her huge impact on that genre while rising to prominence during the '50s and '60s. Her fit, impressive figure became so famous all by itself that she allegedly had her legs insured for $3.2 million. One of her first and biggest hit songs, "Proud Mary," became a hit that dwarfed the original version by Credence Clearwater Revival. Above all else, Turner was a consummate performer.
Given that, it's a crying shame that she graced the silver screen a mere handful of times, and most of those appearances were as herself. No matter who she was playing, Turner showed up and dug into the performance with as much spirit and professionalism as any of her live shows,...

Tina Turner, a legend of R&b and pop music who also made memorable movie appearances, has died. She was 83.
Born Anna Mae Bullock in the farming community of Nutbush, Tennessee, she was shuttled alongside older sister Ruby between various relatives as a child and her mother left her abusive father when she was 11. At 16, the girls were reunited with their mother in St. Louis.
Following graduation, she started frequenting St. Louis nightclubs while also working as a nurse’s aide. It was at one of these nightspots that the teen lucked into becoming a member of Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm in 1957. Turner debuted under the name Tina Turner in 1960 with her duet with Ike, 'A Fool in Love.' That kicked off a string of tracks that she’d be forever associated with, even if they didn’t all become hits, including 'It’s Gonna Work out Fine',...

I can't quite believe it, even as I write these words. But at age 83, after a years-long battle with intestinal cancer, Tina Turner has died. Michael, Prince, Bowie, Madonna, Mick Jagger -- Turner belonged to an ultra-rarified group of rock and pop gods that's growing smaller as time marches onward, and shows few signs of being replenished by the current music landscape. Arguably the greatest live performer of the 20th century, Tina Turner's long and storied career was marked by meteoric rises, catastrophic falls, and stunning reinventions. She did as much to invent modern rock and roll as Buddy Holly and Little Richard, and still gets half the credit.
Turner released an autobiography in 1986 called "I, Tina." She was only halfway into her career, but had just staged its most important chapter: the zeitgeist-seizing, don't-call-it-a-comeback album of the century, "Private Dancer." The album changed everything for Turner. It completely re-energized her career,...

There's no such thing as a bad "Mad Max" film, because even the so-called "weakest" film of the franchise still boasts one of the series' best characters. In "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome," Tina Turner plays Aunty Entity, the ruthless, determined ruler of Bartertown. She's the one who forces Max (Mel Gibson) into the Thunderdome for a bit of a gladiator-esque battle and is undoubtedly the strongest part of this admittedly pacing-challenged film. During a 1985 interview with George Miller for Time Out (via Multiglom), he spoke at length about not just the backstory of Aunty Entity, but also the decision to cast Turner in the role.
At one point, it sounds like Miller contemplated making the film without Max Rockatansky at the focus by telling a "Mad Max"-esque origin story about how she came to power. "We wanted to have the sense that before she built Bartertown, she was a genuine hero,...

George Miller's "The Road Warrior" (aka "Mad Max 2") is a perfect action movie from a filmmaker unencumbered by convention. The film opens with a hallucinatory, newsreel-like recap of the first movie shot in the boxy academy ratio. This sequence reframes the post-apocalyptic realism of "Mad Max" as the stuff of cinematic myth. Mel Gibson's Max is no longer just a cop driven to extrajudicial means due to the murder of his family. He's a man of the Outback, a hard-driving drifter in search of petrol and food. And once this prelude concludes, we are thrust into the widescreen expanse of Max's open-road existence. It's one of the most exhilarating transitions in the whole of cinema history.
"The Road Warrior" was also a global hit, which necessitated a third film. "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" would be a full-scale studio production with twice the budget of the previous movie.

The Who's "Tommy" is one of the most groundbreaking concept albums in rock and roll history, and is considered by many to be one of the best albums ever written. After its debut in 1969, "Tommy" has been adapted in a variety of different mediums, including a ballet, an opera, a restructured work for the London Symphony Orchestra, a Broadway musical, and most notably, the cinematic rock and roll masterpiece by Ken Russell. Four years before directing "Tommy," Russell put out the controversial religious horror erotica, "The Devils," which /Film's Chris Evangelista rightfully described as "a punk rock freakshow disguised as a period piece." Considering the story of "Tommy," Russell was the perfect director for the job.

Tina Turner in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
Just two years after documentary Tina made its début at the Berlinale, the star whose story it tells has passed away. Aged 83, the Tennessee-born singer and actress had suffered from a long illness, according to her publicist.
Turner, often described as the Queen of Rock and Roll, rose to fame in the late 1950s but went on to stage a spectacular comeback as a solo artist in the 1980s, at one point making it into the Guinness Book of Records for attracting the largest ever crowd for a live show by a single performer. Although her love of singing meant that a serious venture into acting was never on the cards, she made her mark as the formidably Aunty Entity in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, also appearing in Last Action Hero and Tommy. Her contributions to soundtracks include hit Mad Max theme We Don't Need Another Hero.

Tina Turner, whose musical career spanned decades, has died at the age of 83, her spokesman said in a statement on Wednesday. She died peacefully after a long illness in her home near Zurich, Switzerland, according to Reuters.
Her hits included her 1970 cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary” and her big comeback hit from the ’80s, “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” which won Record of the Year and Song of the Year at 1985’s Grammys. Her story of surviving the abuse of singing partner husband Ike Turner and becoming a rock star in her own right was made into the 1993 film “What’s Love Got to Do With It.” Angela Bassett earned her first Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Tina, while Laurence Fishburne was also nominated as the volatile Ike.

Tina Turner, one of the greatest singers of all time, is dead at 83. Deadline reports she “died today after a long illness at her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland.” Mere words can’t do justice to what an absolute legend she was, with a career that made her a top draw that spanned generations. She was a household name if you were a child of the 80s, but guess what? She was also a household name in the 60s, 70s, 90s and 2000s too. Arguably her greatest period as a solo artist was the eighties when the former soul diva reimagined herself as a rock goddess, topping the charts with a string of iconic hits, including “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” “Private Dancer,” “The Best,” “Better Be Good to Me” and “We Don’t Need Another Hero.” That last song was the lead single off the Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome soundtrack,...

Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26th, 1939 in Brownsville, Tennessee. Three of George Miller's four "Mad Max" films have been decidedly post-apocalyptic. 1981's "The Road Warrior" took place in a desert that was peppered by bondage-gear-wearing thugs who sought to infiltrate and loot the fortified bases of those who thought to salvage water and gasoline. 1985's "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome," after an amusing dalliance in the titular fighting arena, found a tribe of children who vaguely remembered the world prior to an unnamed apocalyptic cataclysm.
It seems that the Earth descended into "we have a Thunderdome" territory in the span of less than a decade. Meanwhile, 2015's "Mad Max: Fury Road" went full-tilt into fable territory, depicting a world as it might look a few generations after the apocalypse. Continuity isn't so much an issue with the "Mad Max" series, however, as Miller finds the world more interesting than any definable story arc.
There was, however, a definite starting point.

The Mad Max movie franchise, first created by George Miller and Byron Kennedy in 1979 with the initial movie of the same name, became a media sensation. The film series is set in post-apocalyptic Australia and follows the titular character Max Rockatansky (portrayed by Mel Gibson in 3 films) into action-packed adventures.
Later on, Tom Hardy took over as Max for 2015’s fourth installment – “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
The series chronicles the thrilling escapades of Rockatansky, a police officer in a dystopian Australia facing social disintegration due to war and depleting resources. Grief-stricken and enraged by the biker gang’s murder of his wife and child, Max embarks on a quest for vengeance.
As Australia rapidly plunges into barbarity with each passing day, he finds himself assisting small pockets of civilization – initially driven by self-interest but eventually out of compassion. Alone in the Wasteland, Max is determined to make that responsible pay for their heinous deed.

Prior to this year, only 11 sequels had ever been nominated for either of the Golden Globe Awards for Best Film (Drama or Comedy/Musical). Over half of them were added to the list after the turn of the century, and three have joined the group within the last decade. This year, an unprecedented total of three continuation films are competing for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s top honors. If “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” succeeds on its comedic bid or the drama prize goes to “Avatar: The Way of Water” or “Top Gun: Maverick,” the number of Best Film Golden Globe-winning sequels will rise to four.

Lionsgate offered up a new “John Wick 4” poster during their presentation at this weekend’s Ccxp (also known as the Brazil Comic-Con). The poster is just an extreme close-up of a suited-up Keanu Reeves. The appeal of the series, not discounting the relative quality of its predecessors, is the mere hook of watching Keanu Reeves going full “gun-fu” on a new batch of bad guys, random henchmen and upper-level adversaries. The appeal of “John Wick: Chapter 4” is quite simply that it’s another “John Wick” movie.
Perhaps “John Wick” was initially perceived as a knock-off of Liam Neeson’s “Taken”, with Keanu Reeves playing a retired hitman who leaps back into action after his wife dies and Russian mobsters murder his new puppy. However, its impact on the action movies that followed is akin to if “Speed” (which was a loose variation on the “Die Hard” formula) caused...

If there is one aspect of Max Rockatansky from the "Mad Max" films that could be considered the most intriguing, it's the timelessness of the character. Portrayed by two different actors throughout four films, the road warrior has become a figure closely associated with the post-apocalyptic aesthetic. Constantly going from one wasteland adventure to another, Max has been a lone nomad with no real sense of belonging, giving the high-octane action of the "Mad Max" films a melancholy tone.
Mel Gibson played Max for the first three "Mad Max" films, and his approach to the character helped shape Tom Hardy's eventual portrayal in 2015's "Mad Max: Fury Road." Before portraying Max, Gibson was not a well-known star, and his time with the character would become integral not only to the next actor playing him but would also help to shape the franchise as a whole. While filming the 1982 film "The Road Warrior,...

The timeline of George Miller's "Mad Max" feature films is a curious one, if it even exists at all. The 1979 original, "Mad Max," takes place in a dystopian near future where oil shortages have kicked off a global spate of lawlessness. Cities are still standing, but society is in the midst of collapsing. In 1981's "Mad Max 2" (released as "The Road Warrior" in the United States), society seems to have fully collapsed. Not just collapsed, but some unnamed cataclysm has wiped out most of the world's population and left the surface of the planet a desert wasteland. Only two years had elapsed since the first movie, but decades worth of damage appear to have been done. One does not join a gang of bondage-gear-enthusiast wasteland lords in only two years.

"Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" allowed George Miller's insane action universe to expand into more adventurous territory when it came out in 1985. The previous entry, "The Road Warrior," did well to establish clear-cut villains for Max (Mel Gibson) to battle — even if the characters of Lord Humungus (Kjell Nilsson) and Wez (Vernon Wells) were a little one dimensional. For the sequel, Miller needed a more complex villain that had a reason for existing other than to simply cause chaos across a post-apocalyptic hellscape.
Tina Turner was an inspired choice to play an intelligent, conniving villainess that could truly challenge Max as the leader of this strange, dangerous new world. Her character Aunty Entity was more than just a rampaging antagonist for Max to battle: As the mayor of Bartertown, she built a bustling community that was able to survive and thrive under her control. Turner was already an aspirational figure...
