Disorienting and Bizarre, But Very Interesting As Well.
drownsoda9021 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
A bizarre unknown little horror/thriller from the late 1980s, "Deranged" (under the same title as another 1974 horror film) is a really interesting movie. The film revolves around Joyce, a pregnant and mentally disturbed New York housewife, with a semi-estranged husband, Frank, and an overbearing stepsister and a prim-and-proper mother. While Frank is on a business trip, Joyce receives a surprise baby shower from her friends and family, but begins to hear voices and experience hallucinations again. Upon returning home, Joyce is violently attacked by a burglar in her apartment, and she ends up murdering him in self-defense, but loses her child in the violent struggle. This traumatic event sends Joyce into a fit of schizophrenia, where she returns to a childlike state and begins have numerous hallucinations all around her apartment, and begins to murder anyone who comes near her.

This film is apparently very similar to Roman Polanski's film "Repulsion", but I can't compare the two because I've never seen it, so I will have to give my review without referencing that film (although I may want to see it after seeing this film). Anyway, "Deranged" was actually a bit of a surprise to me. I was expecting a fairly cheap '80s film, and in some ways it was, but what the filmmakers did with this film (on presumably a low budget) was very stunning. With the main cast and director being previous workers in porn films, this is quite a surprising movie because it's actually done very well. The story is interesting at the beginning and gets more and more so as more odd things happen and Joyce's hallucinations and visions become more and more disturbing - some involving her incestuous past relationship with her deceased father, and her stepsister's love affair with her husband.

The camera-work is really nice as well, and was one of the nicest things about the movie. About ninety percent of the film takes place in an apartment, and is filmed in the similar fashion of a stage play, but this doesn't hurt the film at all. There are some great surprise moments and I have to say that the orchestration of the people in Joyce's hallucinations (the actors going in and out of frame) was handled well and the camera-work was pretty impressive. The lead role, played by Jane Hamilton (also know as Veronica Hart, her porn star name) was very well performed, and was even more impressive considering all she'd done before were adult films. Her performance as the disturbed housewife was very well done and believable. The supporting cast was also not bad, and there were quite a handful of really creepy and disturbing moments and bizarre occurrences that really disorientate the viewer (and shock on some occasions), almost putting us in Joyce's altered point of view. It's quite interesting to watch her go through the numerous mind games with those who she's already, in reality, murdered, but are still talking to her and attacking her. It makes me wonder if there are actually people with illnesses that see things quite like this. The human mind can really be a scary thing, that's for sure.

Overall, "Deranged" is an unknown little psychological horror film that really hasn't gotten much attention (seeing as there are only currently a total of eight user comments on this page). But, it honestly does deserve some more recognition, because it is an intelligent and disturbing horror movie. It's not perfect, but all things considered, it's very nicely done and thoroughly interesting. I enjoyed it, and would recommend it to fans of '80s horror films. Too bad it hasn't received a DVD release yet, maybe then some more people would be aware that it even exists. 7/10.

"It's a freak show!"
morrison-dylan-fan21 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
With having recently discovered the work of "Adult film star" Veronica Hart,I was surprised to be told by a friend, that along with her "adult" roles and parts in the films of Paul Thomas Anderson,Hart had also starred in a "straight" Horror movie made by a number of big name "Adult" stars called Deranged.

Originally thinking that my friend meant she had a role in Jeff Gillen and Alan Ormsby infamous 1974 Horror Deranged,I was thrilled to discover that instead of being a gory Horror,Hart's film was a much more psychological chiller, which lead to me deciding to become derange with Veronica Hart!

The plot:

Returning from seeing her boyfriend Frank fly away to Britan for work related business, and also attending a family held Baby Shower,Joyce enters her high-rise apartment hoping to get into bed as soon as the doors are shut.

Prepairing for bed,Joyce suddenly comes face to face with a mask man who threatens to kill her.Doing everything she can to stay alive,Joyce quickly grabs a near by weapon and stabs the masked man until he is dead on the floor.Shaken up by the masked man's attempted murder,Joyce forgets to ring up the police and instead starts to have a psychological breakdown, which will lead Joyce to not being able to tell what is "reality" and what is in her head…

View on the film:

Using Bill Heller's dark sync score to give the viewer subtle notes on the reality scenes in the film, (with Heller's music tuned to a deafening silence for the "reality" scenes, which is contrasted by having Heller's score creep across the "Alt Reality" scenes taking place in Joyce's head)Art Director/producer/ director Chuck Vincent (who sadly died from AIDS age 51 in 1991) brilliantly emphasis the positives in connection to the films low budget, one location setting.

Keeping Joyce in the apartment for 95% of the movie,Vincent moves the camera tightly around Joyce in which help to create a strong, nerving atmosphere of the apartment crushing the life out of Joyce, which leads to Joyce increasing the problem by allowing her psychological fears to take near total control of everything that she knew to be "real".

Setting almost the whole movie in one location, the screenplay by Craig Horrall (who like Vincent, also tragically died from AIDS in 1991 age 37) avoids the risk of this terrific 83 minute running out of steam by gradually increasing the horrific people/monsters that Joyce "sees" in the flat, along with cleverly hinting at the real cause of Joyce's psychological problem, which Horrall expertly peels away to show a tragic,Horror film.

Featuring in every single scene of the movie,Veronica Hart gives a splendid performance which shows that she is much more than "just" a very pretty "Adult star" face.Opening the movie by showing Joyce to be someone who is unsure about herself,Hart uses the closed in location to dig her nails into Joyce's psych, and pulls each layer of "safety" from Joyce's life, until the only thing left is a raw, deranged mental breakdown.

not unique, but a decent effort.
ThrownMuse8 March 2007
A mentally unstable pregnant woman murders an intruder and goes berserk in her apartment. This movie plays out like a poor man's redux of "Repulsion" or "Images." It lacks both of those films' subtleties and expertise behind the camera. That isn't to say it is completely without merit. The set consists mostly of a small apartment and this creates an effective feeling of claustrophobia. Veronica Hart is rather fantastic. She gives a better performance than I ever would have expected and anchors this movie. The supporting cast is also very good. It's a highly entertaining and icky movie, and pretty impressive considering the lead cast and director primarily worked in porno.

Commendable effort from adult-film industry alumni.
EyeAskance24 August 2007
I never would have guessed that a somewhat-mainstream feature film made by and starring adult film industry personalities would yield an almost impressive result. That said, DERANGED is a semi-experimental project which is not without glaring flaws(mostly in regard to its stagy presentation and the vague, inconclusive closing shot)...but a damned good college try, at any rate.

As stated in other reviews, there is heavy REPULSION influence in this grim story of an heiress who goes 'nanners in her NYC apartment. Is her lowbrow Brooklynite husband plotting to kill her? Did her loving "Daddy" touch her "wrong"? Is everyone who ever met her out to get her money? These questions arise and are half-answered in a consecution of vignettes staging paranoid scenarios ripped straight from the mind of a borderline madwoman.

Quite violent at points, and off-base enough to potentially galvanize a small cult audience, DERANGED is a film which will appeal to some and completely repel others. I'd say give it a go, especially if your personal tastes are deemed "questionable" by family and friends. 5/10.

*footnote- Rather eerie is a shot during the opening credits, of a graveyard with the World Trade Center in the distance. Quite an omen!

Not Bad At All
matthurst-6064527 April 2022
Adult film star, Veronica Hart, shows off her capable dramatic chops as a woman who has nervous breakdown in her apartment due to attacks by a mysterious man and a bunch of gaslighting friends and relatives. It's a gritty, low budget mix of Repulsion and Rosemary's Baby that wisely keeps most of the action inside of the claustrophobic apartment.

Deranged?! That's an understatement!
lost-in-limbo25 November 2005
A young pregnant woman is brutally attacked by a mask intruder in her apartment, though she kills him in self-defence, but during the attack she loses her baby. Instead of contacting for help, she acts if it didn't happen. From this moment it causes a downward spiral for her when suddenly she starts losing her mind, with her drifting into fantasy and reality with dire consequences. This emotional trauma brings back many past experiences that come back to haunt her and she starts seeing things that aren't possible.

Soooooooooo, what the heck was that all about it!? Totally screwed up, that's for sure! Yep, I know we're seeing a woman whose mind has snapped, with her hearing voices and seeing things that aren't really there, but gee I was hearing voices in my head too. "Why watch it", "Stop punishing yourself"… *hmm* I'm lucky my subconscious didn't crack while watching this lousy production. Anyhow, this cheaply made film that has shades of "Repulsion" to it, has to be one of the strangest things my eyes have seen, and one the most annoying things my ears had to go through. It's all about confusion and noise! Why's that? Well, it just didn't add up at all and there's some things in the senseless story, ah what story, which eventuate into pointless excuses to stage bizarre and ridiculously stupid scenarios. These crumby moments were more nightmarish and infuriating for the viewer, than our victim. Just like the woman is in the film, it's a painfully messed up production. We find out that she had some medical problem before she goes wacko, is she a schizophrenic? Who knows? Because we don't. And how something like this could really go unnoticed by family and close people for days after recent visits, goes beyond me. It's just pretty hard to believe. And what's deal with the ending? Is it implying something about what we've seen. Uh, don't try to understand it, because you won't. If you do, gee I must of totally missed the point.

Sure, it's pure schlock, but it's hardly enjoyable on any level. How can you enjoy a film when the irritating score just comes across as a whole lotta' noise and the same goes for the pitiful sound effects. The daggish cast of no-names were rather inept (with the exception of Veronica Hart in the traumatic lead role) and so was the dreadfully loopy dialogue. Because of it's small budget most of the film except for the intro and ending, takes place in only a couple of rooms in a apartment building. It's like a stage show. The small amount of nasty surprises of blood and a few haunting shock effects were done rather nicely. Decent make-up work was provided. While, everything else was basically off the rocker, the camera work was handled in a rather flat manner. I love my unusually twisted films, but boredom just kicked in way too early. Maybe it would've work out better as a short film?

I see through the other comments, I'm in a real small minority. Anyhow, this baffling and truly out-there mix was a real chore to sit through.

At least a nice try if nothing else...
markovd1116 August 2020
Movie has a nice idea, but the lack of bigger budget is obvious. Veronica Hart is playing the main character and she is trying her best, but that doesn't mean anything when movie quickly becomes too boring to watch. User "Ithseldy1" has a nice review if you are interested in the plot, but the problem of the movie isn't the plot itself. It's the way it presented. There were some nice ideas, but the lack of budget really hurt the movie and it seems like you are watching scenes that were just slapped together. A lot of things could have been done better and more effectively and this would be a lot better movie. There is also a lot of overreacting. All in all, I have to give "Deranged" a 5.5/10. It has some interesting ideas, but never manages to pull them of in a right way. I was glad when the movie finished. I don't recommend it. Only thing redeeming in the movie is the scene which acts as a spoof of the wedding and you could make memes from this one.

Surprising in many ways
FrankensteinsDaughter20 February 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I agree with the other posters who compared this to 'Repulsion.' This film does borrow much from that landmark Roman Polanski film, right down to the rotting skinned rabbit symbolism (though potatoes here), but this film is unique in its own way. It's like a filmed stage play; with almost all of the action taking place in one small apartment. Jane Hamilton (aka porn star Veronica Hart) is Joyce Peters, a wealthy, pregnant and mentally disturbed New York City socialite on the fringes of her shallow subculture. With her husband (supposedly) away on business, and finding no support from her money-hungry mother and sister, she's attacked by an intruder, kills him, loses her baby and retreats into a delusional world that mixes the past/flashbacks, the present and troubling fantasy. Given the overall ambition and maturity of this project, it's hard to believe that much of the cast and crew came from the world of porn. The direction of Chuck Vincent, a man best known for adult films and R-rated sex comedies, is shockingly inspired at times, especially for the obvious low budget range, and particularly impressive is Hamilton/Hart, who gives a genuinely wrenching tour de force performance. 'Deranged' is bleak, depressing, claustrophobic and disturbing, and not a movie for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Yup, our Joyce is quite cuckoo all right!
Coventry20 August 2023
Some movies do not live a 100 but 200% up to their title! "Deranged" is the least you can say about the condition of the lead female character here. Joyce pretends she's pregnant, stabs perpetrators that may or may not be imaginary with scissors, hears the bickering voices of pretty much her entire family in her head, has visions of her dead father in the bathtub, holds non-existent sessions with a psychiatrist in her own couch, begs the groceries' delivery boy for a big pickle, hides bodies in her wardrobe, hallucinates of long-distance phone calls with her husband, and throws birthday/inheritance parties for people that want her dead. Moreover, she does all this without ever stepping one foot out of her apartment!

"Deranged" starts out like a compelling late 80s thriller, but the intriguing weirdness rapidly turns into repetitiveness, and the oddness into sheer nonsense. It's the kind of film where you assume it's already ongoing for more than an hour, but when you check the timer it's only at 35 minutes or so. An occasional change of pacing or setting would have been more than welcome because I - for one - grew sick and tired of gazing at Joyce's interior the entire time! After a while you figure out that, whenever the camera pans to another room or the other side of the living room, Joyce is suffering from another hallucination. Yawn! I must admit that, by the time of the denouement, I didn't even care anymore about what was real and what was imaginary.

Via the trivia-section here, I learned that half of the film's cast and crew - including the director - exclusively working in the adult film industry prior to making this movie. Their first attempt at a convoluted and tense psycho-thriller is certainly admirable, but too ambitious in the end.

Excellent for what it is
Holt-22 December 1999
If your like me and are a fan of old 80's horror movies, then you will really appreciate watching this movie. When I usually watch movies of this time and genre my expectations are low, because I'm just looking for something to laugh at. But trust me, you won't be laughing at this movie. It's certainly frightening and completely, Deranged!

Strange, but worth watching
lthseldy121 October 2000
I was not expecting what I had seen in this film. This movie starts out that there is a girl that is pregant and has trouble with her rich family members taunting her and ridiculing her for her mental problems. The lady comes home to her apartment and there is a man there that beats her up and she is left there to fend for herself. She kills the man and hides him under the sofa in her apartment and from this point on... she does not leave her apartment. This is when things get weird.... she soon finds herself hallucinating, seeing people that aren't there and having flashbacks of her fathers death, her half-sisters taunting and her mothers nagging. The mind games are interesting to watch and one wanders if people really can see things this way. The lady has lost the baby and therefore pretends to be pregant throughout the rest of the movie fooling everyone about the miscarrage and the hallucinations. This movie is worth watching and I give it at least a 7.

Tour de force Chuck Vincent/Veronica Hart thriller
lor_20 April 2023
My review was written in May 1987 after a Cannes Film Festival Market screening.

The team of filmmaker Chuck Vincent and actress Veronica Hart (credited here under her real name, Jane Hamilton) scoe respective tour de force stints in "Deranged", an innovative thriller simply not suited to today's market. Duo achieved something of a breakthrough six years ago with the crossover porn film "Roommates", but "Deranged" is neither the expected exploitation film nor a pedigreed art picture and thus is unlikely to reach either extreme of the audience spectrum.

Taking the unpromising premise of a woman going crazy and suffering escalating hallucinations (most similar forerunner being Robert Altman's "Images"), Vincent draws upon his legit theatrical background in creating a claustrophobic atmosphere for his story. After brief opening scenes in which Hamilton's husband goes off to London and her resentments of her sister (Jennifer Delora) and patrician mother (Jill Cumer) become evident, virtually the rest of the film is played out in Hamilton's New York City apartment.

Accosted by a burglar clad head to toe in black, she kills the intruder in self-defense a la "Dial M for Murder" with a pair of scissors. This traumatic incident causes her hallucinations to multiply rapidly until the viewer is not sure what is real and what is merely a projection of the heroine's fears and memories.

Vincent audaciously uses lengthy takes (recalling Alfred Hitchcock's experiment with "Rope") and a dollying camera that prowls past walls into every room of the apartment, while characters constantly enter or disappear just out of camera range. Even elements of kabuki theater are integrated into the format, as the black-clad intruder reappears and skulks around the apartment, dodging Hamilton's real visitors yet visible to her and the audience. This elaborate technique provides several elegant transitions within a shot to move between various periods of the heroine's life as well as spatially, as in the recurring surprise appearances of her psychoanalyst interrogating her in the living room she imagines to be his office.

Though there are some weak segments, the film overall holds one's interest and builds suspensefully to a violent conclusion. Hamilton, on screen almost constantly, handles her lengthy monologs very well and really shines in the eventual transition from tormented heroine to unhinged avenger with a strange look in her eye. Rest of the cast, which includes porno vets Jerry Butler and Jamie Gillis as her husband and father (billed under different names), is okay in functional capacities.

Compulsion rip-off about a young woman who is left alone in her apartment. An intruder breaks in and tries to kill her, but she manages to defend herself and kill the intruder. However, after killing the intruder she starts to have weird visions and starts to see things that are not there. And with each passing day she grows more and more violent. Cheaply made film with a mostly porno cast playing it straight is far better then anyone would expect. It is decently made and acted and has its far share of twists and turns, but ultimately the extremely low budget & lack of originality hampers it.

Rated R; Violence, Nudity, Sexual Situations, and Profanity.
