Lame, lame, lame
reg_feyer22 August 2005
Don't let the credits mislead you, Jennifer Lopez only has a small supporting role (a dozen lines at best), and the "no-name" stars give performances which justify their subsequent demise on the Hollywood movie scene. Bad acting, unbelievably implausible plot lines, and second rate dialogue are only accentuated by cookie cutter characterizations. If I'm ever stuck in a bad-ass L.A. Latino neighbourhood, I hope I'm lucky enough to run into this movie's gang members; at worst my car would get a new paint job. The predictable happy ending is capped off by yet another forgettable dance sequence, making one yearn for the comparably energetic, stylish excellence of "Footloose" or "Dirty Dancing". If you choose to spend a few hours watching this drivel, be sure to do some housework as well so it's not a complete waste of your time.

Terrible... but some decent music...
darkpoet-124 November 2005
This movie was terrible in so many ways. I can't believe that the writers and directors got away with churning out this crap. What started as a love story between teacher and student turns suddenly and painfully towards a stay-in-school moral. Not bad if perhaps you were forced to watch this in school instead of studying, but not even worth watching on TV.

But the music was filled with some decent typical 80s moments... especially whenever the music took over. And although you might think that JLo was in this movie after seeing it, you won't find her anywhere in the movie or in the credits.

Very very bad, but hugely entertaining

Warning: Spoilers
"A maths professor working at a posh school leads a double life : in the evenings he dresses in black leather, rides a giant motorcycle and dances in a hot-hot-hot nightclub. Actually he leads a triple life, since he teaches maths and other subjects to the younger clients of the nightclub. Thanks to his charm and cool he convinces many young people to study, to sit for exams or simply to stay in school."

Does the premise mentioned above sound sane ? If your answer is "yes", then you're likely to enjoy "Lambada" for its warmly inspirational message. If you can't answer because you're laughing so hard lemonade squirts out of your nose, then you're also going to enjoy the movie, although for a different set of reasons.

Me, I fell squarely into the second category and yes, I did indeed enjoy every misbegotten, misfiring second. In fact "Lambada" cheered me up no end, like a well-made Irish coffee after a long walk in the drizzle.

I think this is a truly godawful movie. However, it yields a rich harvest in involuntary comedy. Apart from the main premise, which is enough to fry one's brain by itself, there are many many other defects, such as the non-stop succession of clichés. There's also the fact that many of the actors playing high-school students look at least twenty-five. J. Eddie Peck, who plays the maths teacher / lambada dancer / idealist / apostle of Latino pride, finds it difficult to suggest anything else than baby-faced prettiness, which turns the sight of him being b-b-b-bad to the bone on a powerful motorcycle into comedy gold.

Moreover, the movie touches upon a number of serious societal problems - such as the effects of racism and social inequality on school results - without showing even a flicker of depth, maturity or modesty.

The finale of the movie consists of a triumphant vindication of the maths teacher, who has proven that students from all backgrounds can do well at maths, if given enough attention and encouragement. In the audience his wife listens to his speech with tears in her eyes, perhaps out of connubial tenderness, perhaps because she's just realized she's wasted ten years of her life on a guy who spends his evenings dancing with sexy half-naked girls. It is hard being married to a saint.

Now let's all dance a jolly hypotenuse !

Dated now, but amazing dancing
GiselleCorrelli24 May 2014
Im in mixed minds. When I was 16 (Im now 37!) I adored this film, mainly for the dancing by unknown dancers. They weren't famous yet they were brilliant. Also the whole Latina/Latino thing which Im slightly obsessed with, Hispanic culture hasn't come to the UK so it all seems exotic to me. Now I watch it, and Im more critical... the kids seem way too old - younger people should have been cast. The story line isn't great, nor the script writing. Its sad that as we mature we're naturally so critical of everything instead of enjoying it. Id like to see this remade but with a sharper script, better actors but still the same sort of dancing, I'd love to know who taught them.

It already looks like a relic...

Cross-pollination of "Stand and Deliver" with "Dirty Dancing" is jaw-droppingly misguided. Beverly Hills math teacher, who struts his stuff at night in a barrio club, gets involved with under-privileged kids and gives them lessons on how to Lambada--a hot new Latin dance! Moronic junk is almost endearingly bad...almost. It features uncharismatic leads, soapy melodrama, generic club music, and teeth-gnashing dialogue. It does attempt an offbeat approach to a formula plot, but that is the only positive thing one can really say about it.

JLo's Oscar Performance
xjrgx9 May 2006
This movie was one of the most surprisingly entertaining movies I have ever seen. The dialogue was just not grossly disengaging, but the gawdy dance choreography couldn't help but make me laugh. This movie reminded me of West Side Story, except as if directed and choreographed by a blind, mentally challenged individual.

The storyline, if you can call it that was so terrible. While watching the movie you know it is so mentally abusing to do so, but like a train wreck, can't help but keep your eyes fixated on its amazement.

Definite must see, if you and your friends want to have a great laugh, or if you are just feeling self-destructive.

Fantastic

From choreographing by Shabba Doo and Brainy Boo to the forbidden lambada dance before math class in "No Mans Land." You cannot escape the incredibly alurring and ridiculous call of the LAMBADA!!!!!!!! I would recommend this to any one who is up for a night of laughter, protractors, and terrible 80's dance moves. I love it! LAMBADA!!

Peck and Hardin's chemistry and some steamy dancing (I wish there was more) trump bad dialogue and an inept script
jonathanruano29 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
"Lambada" (1990) has a pretty laughable, hackneyed script. The story is also very predictable: Kevin 'Blade' Laird (Eddy Peck) is a high school teacher by day (a bit like Clark Kent) and then he turns into lambada dancing superman by night at the barrio dance club, "No Man's Land," and teaches poor Latino kids about mathematics and other subjects into the bargain (so that they can obtain their high school diplomas). But with all that said, a crazy part of me still liked this film. One reason is the really hot and sexy lambada dancing, against a backdrop of great 1980s music, that creates a lively and exciting atmosphere for a movie that would otherwise have been hamstrung by its poor script and inept plot. The second reason is that J. Eddie Peck (Keven 'Blade' Laird) and Melora Hardin (as his high school student Sandy Thomas) generate more chemistry and sparks together than the vast majority of couples do in the romantic comedies, including the recent "Friends with Benefits." To be sure, "Lambada" is not a profound film about the human condition in keeping with the tradition of the great romance films. But watching Peck and Hardin interact on screen does wonders for the libido (even if the high school teacher ultimately remains faithful to his wife), making "Lambada" surprisingly effective as an erotic film. The third reason why I liked this film is because all the so-called high school students, including Melora Hardin, look like they are in their twenties. As a result, the sexual tension building up between Kevin and Sandy does not look dirty at all. Overall a pretty entertaining movie. 6.5/10

A guilty pleasure.
brokerbeck18 November 2000
J. Eddie Peck smolders as Kevin Laird, a high school math teacher who lives in 2 worlds, the Beverly Hills school where he teaches and the east LA world where he came from. Delicious to watch, the dance scenes with the pulsing sexual undercurrents showcase J. Eddy Peck's attributes beautifully as does a voyeristic butt shot as he writes on the blackboard in front of his Beverly Hills class. The classic themes are all here: there are no bad kids they're just misunderstood (West Side Story), we have more in common that we have differences, acceptance of diversity, you can't judge a book by it's cover. This movie will entertain, it has music, dancing, competition, overcoming obstacles, family values and a happy ending. Great date movie.

Unstoppable silliness nice for good laughs
emiliano99917 June 2021
Everything here is so preposterous to even take it seriously. If you try to make the synopsis, even that sounds like the deranged ramblings of someone very high in powerful 80's colombian produce, if you catch my drift LOL... Maybe that's how this was pitched and greenlit back then, who knows?

Unlike The Forbbiden Dance there are here more production values: a bigger cast, more dancing pros, a not-so-bad OST, but still, let's see what happen here: a guy who is high school teacher by day an THE Lambada-king at night (and happen to be mexican-born too) left his wife and kid in a daily basis, to go and keep his talents working only to be discovered by one of his students (a Melora Hardin that look here very into her 20's) and use that brazilian dance as learning tool for a bunch of East LA kids that want to learn computer programming. HAHAHA! No, REALLY...

Like there was a script ready for a movie about an awesome and cool teacher (like Stand and Deliver or Lean on Me) but when the lambada fad (and the colombian produce) kicked in the suits at charge decided to make a movie about it putting all into the blender.

Melora Hardin is HOT in here, and I suppose the dancing teacher isn't that bad looking either.

This is the kind of flick to watch when there is nothing else, for fun and giggles.

Kinda recommend it.

andrew grayson brown loved this movie and gave it two thumbs up, and you will feel the same way
welovegokatgo25 January 2005
i don't know how this one slipped through the cracks, but it is one of best movies of the nineties and possibly of all time. believe me. it is so hot, and spicy, and it has lots of leather and chrome, or something.

it has so many insane scenes that have nothing to do with the rest of the movie, and thrives on intense nostalgia for the culture and fashion that only existed in the early 1990's.

it's such a treat to see such stars as j. eddie peck, adolfo quinones aka shaboom, and jennifer lopez before they became such hot hot stars. Hot.

see this movie. it's like stand and deliver, except with much more dancing and obsession with the year 1990. and it has protractors.

two thumbs up

Set the night(and dance floor) on fire!
entrapment278 October 2003
It's a steamy hot movie especially for dance fans. After seeing this film, I wouldn't mind learning the Lambada from one of my teachers! It stars Kevin Laird , a Beverly hills teacher by day and a lambada dancer by night at the hot L.A. club No Man's Land where he teaches drop outs Beverly Hills math. But his Student Sandy knows nothing but his dance moves at the club.

The movie really catches your attention from the get go but Sandy's crush tends to get a bit annoying especially when Kevin flat out rejects her advances over and over again. You start to feel sorry for the guy. But the dance scenes are the best and who can forget Sandy's sexy daydream. I wouldn't mind riding a motorcycle and a man at the same time! If you loved this movie, you'll love the soundtrack as well. It'll set the night on fire!

Impressive
ackerdm10 March 2007
I can't explain in words on the impact that this movie has had on me. I would recommend it to anybody that is looking for a film that has it all: great acting, excitement, drama, HUMOR and intense dance scenes. Shabba-Doo really carries the movie with hot choreography and excellent portrayal of the bad boy who really has that innocence buried deep down inside. The character Dean plays a great antagonist that highlights the movie with his intense attitude, great hair and unforgettable facial expressions. Blade steals the show with his portrayal of a man leading two lives, a Hispanic who changed his identity after he was adopted at the age of 14 by a white parents. After the movie is over and the butterflies leave your stomach, you'll thank me.
