Yesterday on the blog we announced the Fellows participating in the 2024 Film Independent Episodic Lab. Today, we’re drawing your attention to the fact that applications for next year’s cohort are currently open, with the regular deadline of February 26.
We asked 2020 Episodic Lab Fellow Katherine Ruppe to share her experience in the Lab developing her Sloan-supported series project Liftoff, about the lives and careers of NASA’s first class of female astronauts. Follow Katherine online at @RuppeVerse on Instagram and X.

Beyoncé has made her long-awaited return to the stage — on Wednesday night, in Stockholm, Sweden, the legendary pop icon delivered the inaugural performance of the “Renaissance World Tour,” her first solo run of shows since 2016.
Opening for herself, Queen Bey kicked off the marathon, three-hour show by performing a series of ballads, including “Dangerously in Love,” “Flaws and All,” “1+1,” and “I Care.” After a brief intermission, Beyoncé launched into the Renaissance portion of her set, as she showcased her latest album with performances of “I’m That Girl,” “Cozy,” “Alien Superstar,” Cuff It,” “Energy,” and “Break My Soul.”
Video interludes broke the set into themed sections dubbed “Renaissance,” “Motherboard,” “Opulence,” Anointed,” and “Mind Control.” After debuting songs from her latest record, Beyoncé used “Opulence” to dig into her back catalog with “Formation,” “Run the World (Girls), “Black Parade,” and “Partition,” as well as her remix of Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage.

The Renaissance world tour kicked off today in Stockholm, Sweden, with Beyoncé billed as the opening act, main act, and encore act. To be fair, she has two decades’ worth of ground to cover, which she fittingly acknowledged by opening the show with “Dangerously in Love,” the title track from her debut solo album released 20 years ago. It also marked her first live performance of the song in over a decade.

Beyoncé has officially kicked off her "Renaissance" World Tour. The megastar launched the highly anticipated event on May 10 in Stockholm, Sweden, kicking off a three-hour set without an opening act. She's set to travel through Europe through June before coming to North America over the summer, completing over 40 dates by the time the tour is through.
The tour is Beyoncé's first since 2018's "On the Run" tour with Jay-Z. Her last solo tour was in support of 2016's "Lemonade," so needless to say, the "Renaissance" tour is a major event - and Forbes has predicted that it could gross up to $2.6 billion by the time it's complete, making it one of the most profitable tours ever. It also marks Beyoncé's first live performance since 2018 other than a one-off appearance in Dubai in January, where she appeared alongside her oldest daughter, Blue Ivy Carter.

Rapper Kanye West has named his “favourite song” on Beyonce’s ‘Renaissance’.
The track ‘Church Girl’ on the ‘Halo’ hitmaker’s latest LP was among the favourite tune shared by the rap legend to his 17 million Instagram followers, reports aceshowbiz.com.
“Favourite song on Beyonce album,” he captioned a screenshot of the song on a streaming service.
The ‘Stronger’ hitmaker previously appeared alongside the former Destiny’s Child star and her rapper husband Jay-Z on 2011’s ‘Lift Off’.
The 45-year-old star also hailed DJ Khaled’s star-studded ‘God Did’ joint “song of the year” with his own track ‘Wait 4 U’ with Drake and Future.
He wrote” “Song of the year next to Wait For You.”
The track features Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, John Legend, and Fridayy.
The praise comes after John spoke of the “strain” placed on his relationship with Kanye, who legally changed his name to Ye, over their differing political views.

We've got a few new entertaining Spider-Man: Homecoming videos for you to check out today! The first is a weird cross-promotional promo that features Spider-Man showing off his dance moves. He then joins a hipster who's dancing alone in his apartment for some reason. It's an amusingly strange commercial for an Italian internet and cable company called Tim,
We also have a preview of the musical score for you to listen to. The movie was scored by composer Michael Giacchino and this gives us a taste of what we're in for. It's a suite that includes a collection of some of the orchestral themes we’ll hear in the movie. I included a full tracklist for the soundtrack below the videos. Unfortunately, there's nothing really iconic being displayed. One thing that I wish were better about the Marvel movies are the musical scores. Everything they do in that aspect just feels generic.

Penn and Teller pulled back the curtain on their classic trick "Lift Off of Love" during a performance on The Late Late Show Wednesday.
The magicians first performed a straightforward version of the body separation illusion. Teller squeezed inside a set of small boxes covered with the illustration of an astronaut. His limbs and face continue to pop out of various openings as Penn Jillette separates the parts and moves them around the stage.

Harvard graduate Donovan Livingston's convocation speech will definitely go down in history as one of the most moving and meaningful graduation moments of all time. The Master's of Education student performed a spoken-word poem at Wednesday's 2016 Convocation Exercises for the Harvard Graduate School of Education. The speech, titled "Lift Off," describes the difficulties that have historically faced black Americans seeking an education. "For some, the only difference between a classroom and a plantation is time. How many times must we be made to feel like quotas, like tokens in coined phrases? 'Diversity. Inclusion,' " he said. "There are days I feel like one,...

For the past month, I’ve been enjoying the greatness that is the Roccat Kone Xtd mouse and Isku FX keyboard. Sure, they have some weird names, but that does not take away the fact that these are simply two great peripherals to add to your gaming rig.
Kone Xtd
Let’s first begin with the Kone Xtd. When it comes to any mouse, whether they be for gaming or just regular use, comfort is the #1 thing I look for. The Kone Xtd fits perfectly in my hand, and I never get tired of using it. My thumb easily rests on the left side of the mouse, and the arch of the device never leaves your hand with that weird cramping feeling.
The Dpi of the mouse goes from its lowest at 200, all the way up to 8200. The best part about this is that you can change the Dpi setting...

Since Kanye West first announced Watch the Throne on Twitter in August 2010, the tag-team LP with Jay-z had been shrouded in mystery. In the months leading up to the album's August 8, 2011 release, details remained sketchy. There was no loaded press run, super radio push, music video or album leaks leading up to the drop. In fact, "H.A.M" and "Otis" were the only songs released to the general public; beyond that there was nothing.
A few were in the know, like Def Jam VP of A&R Bu Thiam who, was there throughout the recording process and helped Hov and Yeezy achieve their sonic goal. "As an A&R it's a process of trying to bring out the artist's creative ideas and their visions,...

Jay-z and Kanye West have been talking about Watch the Throne for quite sometime now and its finally here. Originally intended as a five-track Ep by the duo, Watch the Throne was revealed by West to be a full-length album in an October 2010 interview with MTV. At the time he said that they planned to record in the South of France. However strangely enough production for the album began in November 2010 in Bath, England (of all places not exactly what I would call a Hip-Hop Hotspot ) and continued during available times in Jay-z’s and West’s respective schedules in Australia, Paris, Abu Dhabi, New York and Los Angeles.
In a number of interviews, Jay-z said that they often recorded in hotel rooms and that the album went through three iterations, as he and West had scaled back from their original musical direction for the album.

In a number of interviews, Jay-z said that they often recorded in hotel rooms and that the album went through three iterations, as he and West had scaled back from their original musical direction for the album.

Beyoncé Knowles looked glamorous from head to toe in big Chanel hoop earrings, a colorful dress, and Louboutins as she stepped out in NYC this week. The Harper's Bazaar September issue cover girl has been working on her next music videos in nearby New Jersey recently; though, this week her husband Jay-z had his turn in the spotlight with the release of Watch the Throne. Beyoncé actually makes an awesome appearance on the album in the track "Lift Off," and Jay-z and Kanye's "Otis" video also just dropped last night. Beyoncé will be back on stage for her own release, 4, for an event she's calling Four Intimate Nights With Beyoncé next week, starting on Sunday. She'll be performing her full album from start to finish at NYC's Roseland Ballroom on Aug. 14, 16, 18, 19, and tickets sold out almost instantly. View Slideshow ›...

While lacking conventional single, Watch the Throne tracks 'Lift Off,' 'No Church in the Wild' and 'N---as in Paris' trend on Twitter.

Nothing Jay-z and Kanye West have done leading up to Monday's release of Watch the Throne has been conventional. While most rap artists look to impact radio with a big crossover single before they drop their album, the Throne handled things a bit differently.
Yes, there was the release of the Lex Luger-produced "H.A.M.," which now stands as a bonus track on the deluxe version of Wtt. Then there was "Otis" of course, but with no catchy chorus, the Redding-sampled track hardly screams crossover. Shade 45 DJ Statik Selektah said he doesn't think Jay and Kanye still need to conform to radio — he actually believes the opposite: "I think Jay and Kanye could put out an...

Music fans finally got to hear the much-anticipated collaboration when Jay-z and Kanye West collaborative album, "Watch the Throne," was released via iTunes at midnight on Monday. As Jay-z promised, the superstar duo managed to avoid piracy --- there were no leaks --- and the project debuted in the number one iTunes slot in 23 countries, according to Universal Music Group.
"You're dealing with a 'major event' record," Vibe editor-in-chief Jermaine Hall told HuffPost. "Major event projects like these always end up being over-analyzed. There is no way to live up to expectations. Because of the level of talent involved, Jay and Ye could have delivered 'Thriller,' and people would find flaw in the Vincent Price monologue." Now that the opus has been made available to the masses, the question is: "Are Jay-z and Kanye West fit enough for the "Throne"?
Here's what some prominent music critics thought.

If nothing else, the contest for Year’s Most Quotable Album has just been decided. Bartlett might have to publish a separate edition just to deal with the hundreds of memorable rhymes Jay-z and Kanye West come up with as their legendary egos battle itout on “Watch the Throne,” the rappers’ long-awaited collaborative album. Beyoncé shows up to sing the chorus of “Lift Off,” the most commercial (and least interesting) track, but that hook is less memorable than some of the lyrical references Jay-z makes to his superstar wife. A recurring theme is how...

It took five release dates and a globe's worth of writing and recording sessions, but Jay-z and Kanye West have finally, officially ascended to The Throne.
The twin kings of hip hop dropped their wildly anticipated duet album, "Watch The Throne," Monday at midnight, giving iTunes the exclusive release and the world a full taste of their powers combined. Put together over arduous months in far-flung locales such as London, Sydney, Abu Dhabi and New York, the album pushed the limits of the friendship and collaborative spirit between the two icons, who worked together previously when West was a producer.
First scheduled to drop in January, that date saw only a single, "H.A.M.," released; then, dates in March and June were missed before another single dropped in July. The whole thing features collaborations with producers and artists such as Frank Ocean, Otis Redding, Mr. Hudson, Swizz Beats, The RZA,...

On the eve of "Watch the Throne" release, Kanye West and Jay-z's new song called "Lift Off" hit the web. The newly-revealed track features none other than jigga's singer wife Beyonce Knowles.
"Watch the Throne" is coming out in the United States on August 8. It features Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All's member Frank Ocean, late soul singer Otis Redding, Kanye's protege Mr. Hudson, and R&B/funk artist Curtis Mayfield in addition to Beyonce.
The album release will soon be followed by a joint tour across North America. The traveling show was due to start on September 22 in Detroit, but was rescheduled by moving the first date to October 29 in Atlanta, Ga. Nearly 20 of the previously-announced dates were scrapped, leaving around 19 shows to go ahead.

If you’re going to hold an event to promote “Watch the Throne” from Kanye West and Jay-z, you have to go as over-the-top as some of the expectations for the album. The formal listening session cannot take place in some studio or club–hold it at New York City’s Hayden Planetarium inside the American Museum of Natural History. Don’t invite just anyone–make sure the guest list is largely stars and media.

It was August 2010 when Kanye first sent the rap world buzzing when he tweeted, "Me and jay bout to drop a 5 song album called 'Watch the Throne.' " By October, that five-song Ep had turned into a full-length LP. West confirmed with MTV News' Sway that he and Hov were going all in.

Jay-z and Kanye West have revealed the tracklisting for the deluxe version of their collaborative album Watch The Throne. The hip-hop pair have been working on the 16-track record over the last year. They set up a recording studio in the Mercer hotel in New York to record parts of it. The tracklisting includes the Beyoncé-starring 'Lift Off', but also confirms that Bruno Mars will not feature on the song as previously thought. Odd Future's Frank Ocean appears on opening track 'No Church in The Wild'. Mr Hudson - who has previously worked with each of the rappers - features on the standard edition's closing song 'Why I Love You'. Jay-z last week previewed the album to journalists in New York, where the 41-year-old musician revealed that the final album is the third iteration. Watch The Throne is expected (more)...

Jay-z has previewed tracks from his upcoming album with Kanye West in New York City. The pair have been working on the project, titled Watch The Throne, for the last year. The record became available to pre-order earlier this week, while its artwork was also unveiled. A private listening session took place in New York's Mercer Hotel, where Jay-z and West set up a recording studio for the album. The 41-year-old rapper played a number of songs - two featuring Odd Future rapper Frank Ocean. The only other artist to feature was Beyoncé on a song titled 'Lift Off', which MTV described as "resounding". This contradicts speculation that Bruno Mars would also feature on the track, which is expected to become the record's lead single. (more)...

New York — Jay-z and Kanye West's forthcoming album may be called Watch the Throne, but soon enough fans will be listening, not just looking, and it will have been worth the wait. On Thursday night, MTV News was among the shortlist of media outlets invited to get an early listen to the power duo's collaborative project.
The listening session was held in the Mercer Hotel, where the New York Post previously reported that parts of the album were recorded. Though it was originally set to begin at 8 p.m., Jay-z walked into the hotel lobby closer to 9 (word is he was at a Yankees game hoping to see Derek Jeter get his 3,000th hit). Demi Lovato's comeback is on the way, Lovatics. (That's what they're calling themselves these days, right?) The Disney star has been plagued by personal problems over the last year, but she's ready to get back out there. She looks beautiful on the cover of her single, "Skyscraper," which she tweeted late Sunday night. Her fans are certainly psyched -- ExcitedForLovatosSingle trended on Twitter on Saturday.
Also newly released is the album art for "Watch The Throne," Jay-z and Kanye West's much-anticipated collaborative album. Details about their project are hard to come by -- we're actually impressed by their dedication to the secrecy.
Def Jam has the album available for pre-order with an August 2 release date. The album will be metallic. Ryan Seacrest expects the first single (rumored to feature both Beyonce and Bruno Mars and be titled "Lift Off") to be released to radio in mid-July.

Remember when Kanye and Jay-z were supposed to release a collaboration album? In January ‘Ye tweeted with gusto about the new project, saying things like: "This Is High End Rap Music" and, "I just threw some bassoon on this muthaf**ka." However, after releasing first single H.A.M. and blazing through their February release date without releasing any new material, Watch The Throne seemed like it might never happen.
Never fear, producer Bangledesh (of Lil’ Wayne’s “6 Foot, 7 Foot”) reports good news. In an interview with MTV, he confirmed that he had been in Paris working with the two icons. "I was requested to come out there and just give a little insight on the album and give them a beat or two and add and create with 'Ye, which was a big honor," he said with excitement. Bangladesh went on to say that the album is "actually on another level.
