Documentary fans have a lot to be excited about this month on HBO and Max. April begins with the premiere of The Synanon Fix, a docuseries that follows the rise and fall of the cult-like drug rehabilitation program Synanon. The documentary Brandy Hellville and the Cult of Fast Fashion takes a deep-dive into the controversial “one size fits most” clothing brand Brandy Mellville and the impact of fast fashion on the planet.
An American Bombing: The Road to April 19th looks at the surge of political violence and anti-government sentiment that led to the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, and the effects still felt nearly 30 years later. HBO is also returning with a second part to their popular docuseries The Jinx, with filmmakers continuing their investigation of Robert Durst.
But if documentaries aren’t your thing, there’s still plenty of popular films hitting Max in April, like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,...

Though he’s known today as one of Hong Kong’s most distinctive contemporary filmmakers, in the early 1990s Johnnie To was still a gun for hire. Having apprenticed for the region’s Tvb broadcasting network for most of the ’80s, he had only recently established himself as a reliable maker of action and comedy films. And chief among his early successes is 1993’s wuxia superhero film The Heroic Trio, which is at once indebted to his genre forebears in Hong Kong cinema and possessed of his own idiosyncratic skills.
Like so many wuxia classics, the film’s plot is at once unnecessarily convoluted and little more than justification for moving from one stunt set piece to the next. In the sewers beneath present-day Hong Kong’s bustling streets, an ancient court eunuch, Evil Master (Yen Shi-Kwan), abducts newborns of imperial blood and raises them as potential new emperors in...

Michelle Yeoh has just won the Academy Award for best actress with her hysterically good performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, making Oscar history as first Asian woman winning that category. It has been a long way since the year 1937, when white actress Luise Rainer won the same category for sporting a “yellowface” and play a Chinese villager in “The Good Earth.” But the Malaysian-born actress had already built up a reputation in the 1980s and '90s as Hong Kong's kick-ass action star.

All the Beauty and the Bloodshed (Laura Poitras)
It is a fascinating thing to watch someone’s history of protest and addiction collide and conspire to hold a pharmaceutical company accountable and expose its parent family as reprehensible. Academy Award-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras profiles the renowned photographer and activist Nan Goldin and her fight through the AIDS and opioid crisis, but this is bigger than a biographical documentary. Through slideshows, interviews, and family videos, Poitras weaves a riveting, heartbreaking interconnected story of generational pain, its influence over the blurry boundaries between life and art. – Jake K-s.

Shot in the same year with the original, “Executioners” included the same cast, and Johnny To in the director’s seat, having added though, Sean Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro in the cast, and Chin Siu Tung as co-director (action director in the previous one), thus boasting an even more impressive collection of names. Furthermore, and although the issues with the narrative continued, the sequel seems to have toned them down significantly, while Michelle Yeoh, this time, definitely rises to the occasion.
“Executioners” is screening at Udine Far East Film Festival
The story takes place in a dystopian future 10 year after the events of the first film, when a nuclear explosion has caused environmental pollution, contaminating the water, and leaving Hong Kong in chaos as the search for drinkable water is the field of battle now. Disfigured genius Mr. Kim is the head of the Clear Water Company, whose efforts of...

Considering the people involved in the movie, with Johnnie To directing, Anita Mui, Michelle Yeoh and Maggie Cheung starring as the titular trio, and Anthony Wong as one of the key villains, and with a script that is filled with martial arts action plus a plethora of Catiii elements, one would expect that “The Heroic Trio” would be the quintessential Hk action film. However, a number of faults in the script and a couple of other issues prevent it from becoming so, although the entertainment it offers, at least for the most part, is undeniable.

The aforementioned trio comprises of Tung (aka Wonder Woman), who is married to a policeman, Chat (Thief Catcher) a mercenary and head hunter, and Ching (Invisible Woman). As the story begins, an enigmatic persona mentioned only as Evil Master is blackmailing the Invisible Woman...

Filmmaking duo Daniels’ absurdist action-comedy “Everything Everywhere All At Once” has been out for a few weeks now, and audiences across the country have had a chance to see how the former music video directors behind 2016’s “Swiss Army Man” were able to turn the tables on the concept of a “multiverse” that’s become so familiar to fans of the MCU.
In the case of “Everything Everywhere,” comparisons have been made to Charlie Kaufman, particularly “Being John Malkovich,” which some may forget received three Oscar nominations in 2020 for Kaufman’s writing, Spike Jonze’s direction and for Catherine Keener’s supporting role.
The Daniels’ movie has received absolutely stellar reviews with a 97 on Rotten Tomatoes and only five negative reviews out of 175. That’s pretty astounding and something that can’t be ignored when we start taking a closer look at Daniels’ film, and why it should be remembered...

Everything Everywhere All at Once describes Michelle Yeoh’s career right now. She is everywhere. As Emperor Philippa Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery, she boldly went where no one has gone before with a role so scene-stealing that there’s talk of a spin-off dedicated just to her character. Yeoh also dominated as the powerful matriarch and ultimate “tiger mom” Eleanor Young in Crazy Rich Asians. And she’s one of the only actors to play two completely different characters in the MCU: Ying Nan in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Aleta Ogord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. A24’s multiverse-spanning science fiction film Everything Everywhere All at Once is one more indication that Yeoh isn’t slowing down. Coming soon, she has lead roles in The Witcher: Blood Origin, American Born Chinese, and the four upcoming Avatar sequels.

The logline for Everything Everywhere All at Once, which opens the SXSW Film Festival, describes the movie as “a hilarious and big-hearted sci-fi action adventure about an exhausted Chinese American woman (Michelle Yeoh) who can’t seem to finish her taxes.” That’s being modest.
Directors-writers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, billed collectively as “the Daniels” (Swiss Army Man), have fashioned a movie that, yes, is about a Chinese American woman trying to get her taxes done—as well as keep her laundromat business afloat and hold her family together. Yet the effort to do so takes her on a dizzying journey through an untold number of different realities, each featuring a different version of the befuddled protagonist.
“I was driving to Big Sur with my wife,” says Kwan about the origins of the film. “For some reason my brain was just thinking about sci-fi, and we had been reading...

Johnnie To directing a remake of the 1975 Shaw Bros classic “Disciples of Shaolin” by Chang Chen can only be a good thing, right? The project has all the tropes to make it a great end-result: a script from To’s frequent collaborator Yau Nai-hoi based on a beloved classic, a star-cast boasting of Aaron Kwok, Maggie Cheung, Ti Lung and Jacklyn Wu and a healthy dose of action and themes like loyalty, betrayals, etc. which To thrives on. So how does it compare with something like the director’s iconic “The Heroic Trio”, for example, which was released just three months prior to “The Bare-Footed Kid”?
Like many Johnnie To films, “The Bare-Footed Kid” features a wide range of characters, but for the most part, it follows Guan Fung-yiu, the titular bare-footed kid, a poor and illiterate young man who moves to the provincial capital after the death of his father,...

James Gunn is always up for sharing his opinions (for better or for worse) as well as interacting with fans on Twitter. Just the other day, in fact, he shared a list of 27 sequels better than the original and before that, he recommended 10 movies to watch during quarantine. But now, The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy director has revealed a new list of films to watch during self-isolation and has come up with 54 action movies that he believes are an A+.
Studios have been releasing some of their new efforts on digital early like Bloodshot and The Hunt in an attempt to capitalize on any extra revenue they can in these difficult times. But forget about new movies for a second. Gunn’s list below begins a proper action film education and all of his suggestions are well worth checking out.

Ever since she stole the show in Suicide Squad, Margot Robbie seems like she’s fully immersed herself into the role of Harley Quinn. Her ever-developing love of this character, led to her actually pitching an adult-aimed, all-female, ensemble action film, inspired by Jordan B. Garfinkel and Chuck Dixon’s “Birds of Prey” comic books, to Warner Brothers. This pitch became Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn and the dedication that has gone into creating Cathy Yan’s film was most certainly worth it!
Released to great reviews, Birds of Prey has sadly underperformed (though has made back its budget already worldwide) compared to industry expectations, which has recently led to a Warner Brothers-approved title change to “Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey”. Whatever title you prefer, Birds of Prey is a joy from start to finish. The film sees Harley (Robbie) break up with The Joker,...

Marvel and DC aren’t the only entities to take advantage of the popularity of superheroes by putting them on the big screen. This is a look at 10 superhero films made by filmmakers outside of the Us and UK.
These days, it's the superhero movie that reigns king at the box office. Studios are pumping out as many as they can to take advantage of receptive audiences and to maintain profitable franchises that expand beyond the cinema. Part of the reason that superhero movies have worked so well of late is that they provide mass appeal. This mass appeal has allowed Hollywood-made superhero films to become hits overseas as well as at the domestic box office. Seeing that success and profitability, international filmmakers have tried their hand at creating their own superhero films. Here are 10 such examples:
