As the credits come up on screen at the end of Dead for a Dollar, the dedication “In Memory of Budd Boetticher” is bannered so prominently next to the title, it could almost serve as a subtitle for the film itself.
In fact, it’s not entirely clear whether or not it officially is the film’s subtitle. Either way, this entertaining latest feature from venerable writer-producer-director Walter Hill is soaked in elegiac love for the clean lines, brisk storytelling and moral clarity of classic westerns, like the kind Boetticher used to make, such as The Cimarron Kid (1952), The Man From the Alamo (1953) or Comanche Station (1960). Even the highly jiggery-pokered look of the film, presumably shot on digital but adjusted in post so that all the blues get filtered out, makes the movie look like something made 60 or 70 years ago. “48 Hrs” and “The Warriors” director Walter Hill is set to receive the Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award for his lifetime of achievements at the Venice International Film Festival this year. But while he’s there, the 80-year-old director is also premiering a new film. “Dead for a Dollar” stars Christoph Waltz as an Old West bounty hunter (where have we seen that one before?) who confronts an old foe while in the middle of an important mission.
“Dead for a Dollar” stars Christoph Waltz, Willem Dafoe, Rachel Brosnahan, Hamish Linklater, Benjamin Bratt, Guy Burnet, Brandon Scott, and Scott Peat. Walter Hill directed the film, working from a script he co-wrote with Matt Harris.
The official synopsis for “Dead for a Dollar” reads: “Veteran bounty hunter Max Borlund is deep into Mexico where he encounters professional gambler and outlaw Joe Cribbens – a sworn enemy he sent to prison years before.

80-year-old American director Walter Hill can lay claim to have invented at least two movie genres: the street gang film — with the seminal 1979 action thriller The Warriors — and the buddy cop movie with the 1982 Eddie Murphy/Nick Nolte hit 48 Hours. As a producer, Hill was behind Ridley Scott’s groundbreaking sci-fi horror blockbuster Alien and its franchise’s spin-offs, including the three Aliens sequels and the Scott-directed Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017).
But Hill’s first love is the Western. He’s explored the lives of Wild West legends Jesse James (in 1980s The Long Riders), Wild Bill Hickok (1995’s Wild Bill) and Geronimo (1993’s Geronimo: An American Legend) and turned Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo, the inspiration for Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Western classic A Fistful of Dollars, into 1995 Prohibition era oater Last Man Standing.

We've often written about the shameful conceit of movie studios that used to cast Caucasian actors in leading roles pertaining to ethnic minorities. Sure, it was fine to have actual minority actors playing supporting roles (often for comic effect) but the most important characters were generally always portrayed by white actors or actresses (remember Rex Harrison as The King of Siam???). Sadly, this blatant policy of racial prejudice often extended to films that were sympathetic to the very races they were portraying. Case in point: Geronimo, a 1962 Western that purports to tell the story of the legendary Apache leader who stood virtually alone against the U.S. government, even after most of his tribe was browbeaten into surrendering. The logic at United Artists at the time was that there was no actor more appropriate to play a famous Native American other than blonde-haired, blue-eyed Chuck Connors, who was...

Netflix is ringing in the new year in atypical fashion. Throughout 2021, the streaming giant’s original offerings swelled while its library titles shrunk. With its list of new releases for January 2022, however, Netflix is expanding its non-original market quite a bit.
Jan. 1 sees the arrival of a truly stunning amount of impressive non-Netflix movies and TV shows. The big titles available on the first of the month include: 300, Interview with the Vampire, Paranormal Activity, Superman Returns, Terminator 2, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and much more. Later on in the month, Netflix is also set to add Phantom Thread (Jan. 16) to its roster.

A whole bunch of bull is coming exclusively to ViacomCBS’s Pluto TV.
Pluto TV will become the exclusive home of Professional Bull Riders’s RidePass, with Pbr changing RidePass from a subscription-video service to an ad-supported digital network. The unusual deal also will make RidePass the first dedicated live sports channel on Pluto TV.
Beginning July 20, Pbr RidePass will be available for free on Pluto TV as a linear channel as well as collection of on-demand content. Annually, it features hundreds of hours of live bull riding, rodeo and other western sporting events. Under the pact, Pluto TV will market its streaming service to Pbr fans, becoming one of the sport’s largest partners.
RidePass — which Pbr has touted as “the Netflix of Western sports” — debuted in February 2018, originally priced at $7.99/month before going up to $9.99/month. Pbr appears to have concluded that it could better monetize RidePass content through a free,...

Wes Studi, Q’orianka Kilcher and Tatanka Means will star in “Canyon Del Muerto,” the new film from writer and director Coerte Voorhees.

Trophies will be presented at the Governors Awards in Hollywood to actress Geena Davis, director David Lynch, actor Wes Studi and director Lina Wertmuller. Members of the Academy board of governors chose and announced these four recipients back in the early summer.
Davis is receiving the Jean Hersholt Award for her humanitarian work. She won the Best Supporting Actress trophy for “The Accidental Tourist” (1988) and was also nominated for “Thelma and Louise” (1991). Other films in her career have included “The Fly,” “Beetlejuice,” “A League of Their Own” and “Speechless.”

These four Hollywood veterans will be feted with honorary Oscars:
Wes Studi
Though actor Wes Studi is known for playing men of few words who often let their actions do the talking for them — think Magua in “Last of the Mohicans,” or his roles in “Avatar,” “Dances With Wolves,” “Heat” and “Geronimo: An American Legend” — he doesn’t hold back his enthusiasm for his 2019 Honorary Award, which will be the first given to a Native American performer.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors voted Saturday, three months earlier than usual, to select their choices for the 11th annual Governors Awards. The Academy moved up the date for the Governors Awards from November 16 to Sunday, October 27. The nearly three-week jump backward reflects a similar shift for the February 9, 2020 Oscars.
The non-televised awards program always draws a number of Oscar contenders to the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood and Highland to celebrate the honorary Oscar winners as well as the occasional Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and Irving J. Thalberg Memorial Awards.

In another show of increasing diversity for all things Oscar, actors Wes Studi and Geena Davis and directors David Lynch and Lina Wertmuller are the winners of the 11th Annual Governors Awards. The honors, as voted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Board of Governors in a special Saturday session, were announced today.
Native American actor Studi, four time Oscar nominee Lynch, and two time Oscar nominee Wertmuller will receive Honorary Oscars for career achievements, while Davis, a past Oscar winner for Supporting Actress in 1988’s The Accidental Tourist as well as a 1991 Best Actress nominee for Thelma And Louise, will receive The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. The board met three months earlier than usual to choose the Governors Awards recipients, as I exclusively reported on Friday, and the ceremony itself will be three weeks earlier than its usual mid-November date at the Roy Dolby Ballroom.

Oscar-winning production sound mixer Lee Orloff is set to receive the Cinema Audio Society’s 2019 Career Achievement Award. He will be celebrated during the 55th Cas Awards on February 16 at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown hotel.
Orloff launched his sound-mixing career with 1984’s Blood Simple, the first film from Joel and Ethan Coen. A half-decade later he would grab the first of seven career Oscar noms for The Abyss, which began a three-film collaboration with James Cameron that also included the 1991 smash Terminator 2: Judgment Day — for which Orloff scored an Academy Award — and 1994’s True Lies.
He went on to nab sound-mixing Oscar noms for each of the first two Pirates of the Caribbean films and also mixed the next two. Along the way he also landed Best Sound Oscar noms for Geronimo: An American Legend (1993), The Insider (1999) and The Patriot (2000). “‘Blade Runner’ was in our DNA,” reveals sound mixer Doug Hemphill about his work on “Blade Runner 2049.” Hemphill and his colleague Ron Bartlett previously collaborated with Ridley Scott on the 2007 final-cut version of the 1982 sci-fi classic, re-mixing the film with all the new bells and whistles available to them. When they lent their talents to Denis Villeneuve‘s 2017 followup they reaped an Oscar nomination for Best Sound Mixing. Watch our exclusive video interview with Hemphill and Bartlett above.

Matt Damon was just 18 when he made his movie debut with a small role in 1988’s “Mystic Pizza,” which was also the second feature of Julia Roberts. In 1992’s “School Ties,” Damon played a prep school bully who antagonized a Jewish student played by Brendan Fraser. Damon grew a peculiar, Ethan Hawke-like goatee for his role as Lt. Britton Davis in 1993’s “Geronimo: An American Legend.” Damon famously dropped 40 pounds off his already thin frame to play a drug-addled Gulf War veteran opposite Meg Ryan in 1996’s “Courage Under Fire.” For the role, he famously dropped 40 pounds off his already.

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

Matt Damon is probably one of the most normal people in Hollywood. There are never any salacious tabloid stories about him, he married a former bartender, and he walks his daughters to school just like other, non-famous dads.
But, just because his life isn't scandalous, doesn't mean the 42-year-old is boring. To prove it to you, here are 15 things you probably didn't know about the "Elysium" star.
1. We all know that Damon and Ben Affleck are best friends. But, did you know that the Bostonians are also distant cousins? Tenth cousins, once removed, to be exact.
2. Before Damon and his bestie/cousin hit it big with their screenplay "Good Will Hunting," the pair were so broke that they shared a joint bank account.
3. At 16 years old, Damon decided he was going to leave Boston for New York City to chase his dream of becoming an actor. His well-educated parents did...

As narrative, Bullet to the Head is amateurish. Villains awkwardly explain their plans for the benefit of the audience. Characterization is non-existent. Scenes are bridged by lame iMovie-style filter effects. Poorly Photoshopped stills are used to illustrate "backstory." The movie clunks along with no sense of dramatic tension or scope.
And yet in terms of how it handles light, movement, texture, and space, it's clearly the work of a master. Directing his first feature since Undisputed (2002), Walter Hill invests the film with all the hallmarks of his abstracted macho style: blunt comic-strip compositions; telephoto lenses that turn foreground objects into translucent smears on the frame; figures lit chiaroscuro against backdrops of neon; reflections rippling on water. Bullet in the Head may have a shaky sense of structure and plot, but it has a firm grip on action movie form.

We have been reporting quite a bit of very recent casting news about the comic-to-tv-pilot adaptation of Powers, a police procedural set in a world with superpowers. It now looks like the final piece of the puzzle has fallen into place, as they have awarded the role of Christian to the very excellent Jason Patric. Here is the FX press release, which includes a nice bit of info about the show as well as about Mr. Patric:
Film and stage star Jason Patric has signed on to star as “Christian Walker” in the FX drama series pilot Powers, based on the award-winning comic and graphic novel series by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming.
“We’ve been asked repeatedly why it has taken so long to bring our series adaptation of Powers to fruition. It is for the same reason we cast Jason Patric in this role; we are aiming for something extraordinary,...

After two missed shots, Sylvester Stallone and director Walter Hill will finally set their sights together on "Headshot."
Ain’t It Cool News received a direct message from Stallone that he's officially secured Hill to direct his upcoming film "Headshot." The cop and hitman team-up pic is a long time coming for this pair of filmmakers: Stallone said that he was close to working with Hill on two of the director’s previous films, 1982’s “48 Hrs.” and 1978’s “The Driver.” Although he might not be a widely-known name for modern moviegoers, Hill’s work in the '70s and '80s made him one of the most respected directors of action films and the late-20th Century revival of the Western. He's worked with some of Hollywood’s greatest action stars -- McQueen, Bronson, Schwarzenegger, Willis, Rourke, Snipes -- with Stallone being one of the few exceptions.

Last week, I had the opportunity to spend about 15 minutes at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel with Matt Damon, who is not only one of the biggest movie stars of his generation but also a genuine actor’s actor who not infrequently takes on smaller parts in outstanding films. The latest and greatest example of this is his role as the verbose, cocksure Texas Ranger Mr. Laboeuf in the Coen brothers’ newly-released Western “True Grit” (Paramount, 12/22, PG-13, trailer), for which he is now in the running for a best supporting actor Oscar nod.
Over the course of our conversation, Damon and I discussed:
his early childhood moviegoing experiences/favorites his first foray into acting in high school (where a teacher inspired him to use school plays as an outlet for his creative urges) and later professionally (he, at 16, and his “best friend” Ben Affleck, at 14, joined the union and began...

Matt Damon is the second son of Kent Telfer Damon and Nancy Carlsson- Paige. His older brother is named Kyle. His parents are not part of the Hollywood industry. Matt is of Finnish, English, and Scottish decent. He grew up in Cambridge after his parents’ divorce. Matt grew up being a close friend of Ben and Casey Affleck. After seeing Ben’s passion for acting he decided to follow his lead. Many times they would go to auditions together and sometimes they would leave right after school. His first film role came when he was eighteen, in a romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts. It was a single line of dialogue and the movie was called Mystic Pizza. After high school he attended Harvard University, but dropped out a semester short of graduating to pursue his acting career.
