Welcome to the digital den of dread, where horror meets headsets in a mind-melting mashup! In the realm of horror movies set in virtual reality, the bizarre becomes the baseline, and the uncanny is commonplace. Imagine strapping on a VR headset, only to find yourself in a world where every turn brings a new terror, and every pixel could be your doom. That’s the twisted reality of VR horror films, a genre that blends the eerie with the electronic in ways you’ve got to see to disbelieve.
From the cybernetic showdowns of Virtuosity to the cerebral labyrinths of eXistenZ, these films are not just about scares; they’re about making you second-guess every digital decision you’ve ever made. Picture this: one minute, you’re a sofa-bound spectator; the next, you’re lost in a labyrinthine VR game fighting for your virtual life, and maybe your real one too.

Brainscan is one of those movies you would stumble on as a ’90s kid watching HBO, Cinemax or whatever other programming you weren’t supposed to be watching after your parents went to bed. The kind that you could tell right away was something darker than society would deem appropriate for someone of your age. The kind you knew would keep you up that night.
All of which made it impossible to turn off, of course.
But there’s a certain quality to Brainscan that felt still even more under the surface sinister than the other horror flicks I was used to at the time. This might sound silly considering the plot is about a misfit teenager who plays the hottest new horror video game advertised in Fangoria and ends up dealing with an almost cartoonish, mohawked, coulda been a guitar tech for Twisted Sister, Little Monsters type villain who...

It was last November when we heard that production had wrapped on director Erik Bloomquist‘s slasher movie Founders Day, and while the film still doesn’t have a release date, we do know when it’s going to have its world premiere: at 6pm on August 18th at the Popcorn Frights festival in Florida. With the premiere a few weeks away, a teaser poster for Founders Day has made its way online, and you can check it out at the bottom of this article.
Written by Erik Bloomquist and Carson Bloomquist, Founders Day is a contemporary murder mystery set in the midst of a heated mayoral election on the eve of a quaint New England town’s tricentennial.
The Bloomquist brothers produced the film for Mainframe Pictures, alongside Adam Weppler. Hargreaves co-produced with William Russ. William Kay serves as executive producer with Blue Finch Films’ Mike Chapman and Fatima Hayward.

While tech-horrors run the risk of dating as quickly as the malevolent malware/equipment they feature, many provide fascinating insights into products gone awry and how they can be utilised as weapons/ to petrify. Recently, Unfriended: Dark Web, i-Lived, Open Windows and Selfie From Hell have all employed web tech/ platforms as tools to terrorise, while the riper likes of Videodrome, Demon Seed, Poltergeist and sci-fi siblings Tron, Brainscan and The Lawnmower Man offer (in retrospect) intriguing insights into corrupt/ defective tech of the time.

The longer Scream Factory has been in business, the more high profile and “classic” titles they have released, the more they have begun to dig a little deeper for the kinds of catalogue titles and semi-obscurities for which devoted horror fans have been clamoring for years. New licensing deals have made new titles possible, including three new releases that have been among the most highly requested movies in Scream Factory’s history. As if there was any doubt, the fact that these three films now have special edition Blu-rays are proof positive that we are living in a golden age of home video.
First up is Brainscan, a 1994 effort in the tradition of Evilspeak, Trick or Treat, and 976-Evil in which a lonely, depressed kid named Michael (Edward Furlong) unlocks the door into a world of horror when a computer game called Brainscan puts him in the body of a...

The players all die gruesomely in the game zone except for one, the last one standing, the winner, who is granted not only his freedom, but fame and fortune. Survive the dinosaurs. "Now that I have your attention, please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Trickster." Back in the mid-’90s, director John Flynn took viewers into an immersive video game with vicious consequences in Brainscan, and with virtual reality experiences now on the rise, Scream Factory has announced a new Blu-ray release of the 1994 horror film:
From Scream Factory: "Ready, Player One….into Hell. More 90s terror is coming your way as we unleash the often-requested film Brainscan on Blu-ray August 28th!
When Michael, a lonely teenager, orders the latest interactive video game, the new high-tech wizardry penetrates his subconscious, where his darkest impulses lead him through a deadly maze of murder, deception and desire. Pursued by homicide detective and prodded by "The Trickster" (T. Ryder Smith) who materializes into his room, Michael is torn between the worlds of good and evil, of reality and fantasy and, ultimately, life and death.

So many things have made this summer feel as though we’re living in an alternate reality, walking around in a daze under record-high temperatures, preparing for nuclear warfare, and secretly hoping the total solar eclipse was just a cover for aliens coming to claim Earth and solve all of our problems. But really, it doesn’t take much to push the human mind off the cliff of reality, to go from a casual stroll down the block to believing you’re wandering around lost in the sewer pipes of Derry, Maine with the rest of the Losers’ Club. That’s exactly where I found myself this past weekend, courtesy of the It Virtual Reality Float experience, which fittingly made its first stop right outside the city of brotherly love. We’re coming to save you, Georgie!
The experience began by entering the bus with seven other Losers and waiting inside a makeshift sewer,...

Con Air, Last Action Hero, Brainscan and Die Hard 4.0 could all have been very different films, going by the early drafts of their scripts.
The life of a Hollywood screenwriter might sound like a glamorous one, but it's not all premieres and champagne.
As one of the smaller cogs in an often complex machine, the writer can often find his or her work changed almost beyond recognition by other hands. Such is the case with the following movies, which were all changed quite drastically in one way or another between their original draft and their final cut.
Some scripts were pressed into service as sequels. Some began in one genre and wound up in another. Rather than put together an exhaustive list, we've chosen a few examples of the script changes that intrigued or bemused us most.

I hadn't seen David Fincher's Gone Girl before creating this list. I felt I'd let his latest film simmer for a bit before attempting to figure out where exactly it fit within a filmography that now spans 22 years. I must also confess to being a David Fincher fanboy. It was Fincher's films before any other that got me to start looking at the way movies were made and who was making them rather than simply consuming one after the other. His leaning toward dark and brooding material is as much about his taste in the movies he makes and his approach to movie making. Even with films such as The Social Network, looking at the fellas behind the creation of Facebook, Fincher delivers a dark, moody and atmospheric piece of cinema. But let's not spoil the conversation of each film before getting to the list. What follows is...

Most horror films have a jokester, prankster, or trickster in them. Sometimes he or she is a disposable character who dies a gruesome death in the first half of the film; sometimes the role is fulfilled by the lead or main supporting character. Whether they live or die, the jokester is almost always responsible for breaking up the tense atmosphere with well-timed pranks, tricks, or smart-assery. Writers and directors have recognized the need for comic relief since the dawn of film, but it seems that the jokester role in horror has become more finely tuned over the last few decades. So for your reading pleasure, we bring to you nine of the most memorable jokesters in horror cinema... Marty – The Cabin in the Woods Marty (Fran Kranz) is the quintessential silver screen stoner, and represents almost every character that’s ever sparked up a joint in a horror film, but...

Rick Baker. Friend of apes. Maker of monsters. Seven time Oscar winner. And that lucky number seven was for The Wolfman, shared with fellow Efx maestro Dave Elsey. Their on-stage speech was great, but the extended Thank You Cam was even better. Both Baker and Elsey thanked Jack Pierce and Dick Smith for inspiring them. Though there were grumblings online that the Academy clip showed the CG transformation rather then the make-up. It is always a treat to see our own getting the gold.

I liked this movie. It isn’t Shakespeare and it’s certainly not Liam’s best work, but it has some dysphoric strangeness at times that will have you questioning how ‘you’ would react in a situation where you couldn’t convince anyone, not even your wife, that you were yourself.
Liam Neeson (Excalibur) leads this action thriller as Dr. Martin Harris a buzzing biotech researcher that’s been invited to Paris to present at a world-wide convention. In a rushed drive to the airport, he falls victim to a car accident and awakens days later with no passport or identification. Night of the Demons, Witchboard, these are films that horror fans have grown up watching over and over again. So when Kevin Tenney, the director behind Witchboard and Night of the Demons, has a new film coming out, we here at Bdhr take notice. Kevin Tenney's latest effort, Brain Dead starring Joshua Benton, Sarah Grant Brendecke, David Crane and Andy Forrest, is a homage to the horror films of yesteryear. We also wanted to know what Kevin Tenney thought of the Night of the Demons remake starring Shannon Elizabeth (Scary Movie), Edward Furlong (Brainscan) and Monica Keena (Freddy vs. Jason) and in a cameo appearance Linnea Quigley (The Return of the Living Dead). Here's what he had to say about everything.
Who is Kevin Tenney and what are you all about?
I’m a father, a husband, and a filmmaker in that order. I was born in Hawaii to a military family.

I was a huge fan of the original film Wall Street which was released in 1987 (actually it was my #1 ranked favorite American movie for several years until I saw Shawshank Redemption in 1996 which dethroned it). For me, the sequel was a welcomed concept and I really wanted to be thrown back into that world of power, money, greed and global economy. From that perspective, the film did not disappoint, but from a character execution and plot storyline…I felt it came up a bit short.
Shia Labeouf, Michael Douglas, Carey Mulligan, Josh Brolin & Frank Langella bring Oliver Stone’s new vision of Wall Street greed back to the screen this time. The film picks up roughly twelve years after the first film ended. For those of you who didn’t see the original, the climax is Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen) recording Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) admitting to insider trading and...

It’s that time of year again, kids. Dread Central’s 2010 Horror at the Oscars coverage. Horror was indeed present this year and in black-tie. While Roger Corman and Lauren Bacall were honored a few months back at the Governor’s Award Ceremony, it was an unexpected delight to see Corman, recipient of the lifetime achievement Oscar, enjoy a standing ovation on national television.
I was, however, very disappointed that neither of them were allowed to speak. Roger Corman’s contributions to modern cinema are too vast for him to just stand up and wave. James Cameron was one of many Corman acolytes present, and his nomination speaks to Corman’s tremendous legacy. On the Terminator DVD Cameron mentions, "I trained at the Roger Corman Film School.” Jonathan Demme, Martin Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola, among many others, were also former students.

That happened this weekend when some friends and I were watching Brainscan and Frank Langella popped up. He plays Detective Hayden. Anyway, that has nothing to do with this story, I just wanted to point out that Frank Langella has been in the acting game for a long time and it seems like he’s just now becoming a household name. I’m aware though, it’s probably from his wise decision to star in last year’s Frost/Nixon.

I have always been a fan of Frank Langella. He was in one of my guilty pleasures as a horror fan, Brainscan. Go ahead, judge me.
From the Variety article:
Frank Langella has been set to star with Liam Neeson, January Jones and Diane Kruger in Unknown White Male, the Dark Castle thriller.
Neeson plays a man who awakens from a coma to find somebody else has assumed his identity. Langella plays Cole, who comes forward as the coma guy’s colleague and gets involved as he tries to reclaim his identity.
Shooting starts January in Berlin, with Warner Bros. distributing. Joel Silver produces with Leonard Goldberg and Andrew Rona. Steve Richards, Sarah Meyer and Peter McAleese are exec producers.
One thing that the article doesn’t mention is that Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan & House Of Wax) will be directing his third film for Dark Castle Films.

The writer/director tag team behind 1995's thriller masterpiece Se7en are getting back in the ring to tackle The Reincarnation of Peter Proud based on the novel of the same name. Seasoned thriller director David Fincher will be at the helm with Andrew Kevin Walker (who also wrote one of my favorites, Brainscan) at the quill and ink. The novelized Peter Proud was written in 1973 by Max Ehrlich who at the same time adapted his story into a screenplay to be later directed by J. Lee Thompson. According to THR, Proud is about a college professor who starts seeing progressively more terrifying visions of what he discovers to be a past life. When he reconnects with people who were a part of the life he once lived, he realizes he may be in more danger than he had planned on. Tossed into the mix is a weird subplot involving ...

A certified Fango Fiend and winner of a 2006 Fangoria Chainsaw Award for his "Killer Film", The Devil's Rejects, Rob Zombie has built an impressive career in multiple creative mediums.
Now, with his second visit to Haddonfield set to arrive in U.S. theaters this Friday, Fangoria takes a look at the music and cinema of Rob Zombie, from White Zombie to Halloween II.
The Man
Rob Zombie (born Robert Bartleh Cummings) has harbored an affinity for the macabre since childhood. Obsessed with the sinister, and fascinated by self conjured grim fantasies, Zombie was destined to swim the dark waters. His early professional journeys into the genre saw him traveling into the musical realm alongside his band White Zombie (named for the 1932 film starring Bela Lugosi), which Rob founded in 1985. White Zombie’s aggressive and pernicious sound won crowds over, and Zombie’s menacing lyrics made the man and band a...

Welcome to the third installment of Fangoria Musick's Lists Of Doom, our new column where we'll be catching up with some of our favorite bands and giving them a place to talk horror. While we could talk all day about "the new album" or "the latest tour", this is Fangoria, so we're gonna pick these musician's brains to find out what scares them.
For part 3, we caught up with Ravage, a Boston-based metal band recently signed to Metal Blade Records, and found that they have a serious affection for the work of John Carpenter.
We gave each member of the five-piece band a chance to spill their guts on their favorite horror films.
