The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival has announced its first wave of program details for its upcoming 58th edition, which is set to take place from June 28 through July 6, 2024. The Czech festival, widely considered to be the most prestigious film festival in Eastern Europe, is set to honor one of the nation’s most famous writers with a new retrospective titled “Franz Kafka and the Cinema.”
The series is set to feature screenings of a wide range of films inspired by the Czech novelist, who famously wove themes of alienation and existential angst into cryptic novels that often flirted with surrealism. Some films, like Orson Welles’ “The Trial” are direct adaptations of Kafka’s writings; but the series also includes movies about Kafka’s life, and films like Martin Scorsese’s “After Hours” that were influenced by Kafka’s ideas.

Bill Kenwright, the prolific West End producer behind the hit musicals Blood Brothers, Whistle Down the Wind and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat who would later go on to become an owner and chairman of his boyhood soccer club Everton, has died. He was 78.
In a statement, Everton said Kenwright died peacefully, “surrounded by his family and loved ones.” This month, the Premier League club revealed that Kenwright had recently undergone surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his liver.
“The world of British theatre without Bill Kenwright seems impossible,” said fellow theater impresario Cameron Mackintosh in a statement on X. “In my lifetime, there has never been anyone like Bill. He’s totally irreplaceable, and we will miss him so.”

Above: 1973 New York Film Festival poster designed by Niki de Saint Phalle. The 61st edition of the New York Film Festival, which opens tonight, has 32 films in its Main Slate, fifteen films in its Spotlight section, ten films and seven collections of shorts in the Currents sidebar, and eleven revivals. That's over 60 feature films. Fifty years ago, in 1973, the 11th edition of the festival had just eighteen feature films and nineteen shorts. Just like this year’s opener—Todd Haynes’s May December—1973’s opening night film, François Truffaut’s Day for Night, had premiered four months earlier at the Cannes Film Festival. And as with this year’s festival, the 1973 edition opened, fifty years and one day ago exactly, in the shadow of an artists' strike. Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians had been picketing the New York Philharmonic outside Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, where the festival was taking place,...

Following David Zaslav’s despicable gutting of Turner Classic Movies earlier this summer––one of many anti-art maneuvers the money-hungry Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and president has commandeered in his embarrassing, hopefully short-lived tenure––he hoped to curry some favor by bringing together the holy trinity of filmmakers to guide the future of the channel. Now, after a few weeks on the job of “network advisors,” Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Paul Thomas Anderson have shared their picks of what to see on the channel this month.
The first two mentioned filmmakers provided videos of their recommendations, with the Killers of the Flower Moon director recommending the Boris Karloff-led Isle of the Dead, Two Sisters from Boston, Victor Fleming’s melodrama Red Dust, and Joseph Losey’s Accident.
Spielberg recommends a pair of Vincente Minnelli films, Meet Me in St. Louis and The Bad and the Beautiful, Douglas Sirk’s Imitation of Life,...

Exclusive: King Charles III heaped royal praise on Andrew Lloyd Webber when he first heard the composer play a piano version of the coronation anthem, telling the peer that the music gave him “goosebumps and tears.”
The anthem, titled Make A Joyful Noise, was just performed in all its glory during today’s Coronation service at Westminster Abbey, as it was broadcasted and streamed to millions around the world.
Lloyd Webber revealed the King’s thoughts to us after he’d given a hush-hush preview of the anthem’s recording. He added he felt “humbled and moved” by the monarch’s “kind words.”
The musical theatre giant was specially commissioned to compose the anthem for their majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. “I mean, he could have said that he hated it and I would have had to have started it all over again,” Lloyd Webber joked.

As confirmed by Deadline today, Jon M. Chu, one of cinema's premiere makers of cinematic musicals, will be adapting the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice operetta "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" for Amazon Studios. In addition to directing, Chu will produce the film alongside Scott Sanders, who worked on Chu's adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's and Quiara Alegría Hudes' stage musical "In the Heights," released in 2021.
"Joseph" is an outsize, rock-forward, expressionistic rendition of the Book of Genesis, telling the story of the Coat of Many Colors. In Genesis, Joseph was given said garment by his father, much to the chagrin of his jealous brothers, who began to plot against him. Joseph was thrown into a pit, with one of his more benevolent brothers planning to rescue him later. He was eventually dragged out and sold into slavery. In the Webber/Rice musical, Joseph eventually gets out of bondage...

We are anxiously awaiting the new season of Big Brother in 2023 (which may or may not feature returning players). And we’re counting down the days until our days and nights are consumed by watching live feeds and angrily tweeting about the CBS reality show’s most recent dumb twist. But in the meantime, we want to ask for one thing from the Big Brother casting producers — please select super fans when finalizing season 25’s houseguests.

Since the premiere of Big Brother 25 is still a few months away in 2023, the casting team is hard at work finding the next group of houseguests.
There was an open casting call in Los Angeles in early March, which tells us that the upcoming season will feature new players, despite rumors that it will include former fan favorites.

As awards season continues, Saturday night saw the Directors Guild of America handing out their awards. And, perhaps not too surprisingly (though it was their first DGA win), Everything Everywhere All At Once filmmakers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert took home the big feature film prize.
"This has been an incredible year for our little film that somehow keeps going," Kwan said as part of his acceptance speech. The pair won over the likes of TÁR's Todd Field, Top Gun: Maverick's Joseph Kosinski, The Banshees Of Inisherin's Martin McDonagh and The Fabelmans' Steven Spielberg.
In the First Time Feature Director category, Aftersun's Charlotte Wells won, over the likes of Saint Omer's Alice Diop and Emily The Criminal's John Patton Ford.

The Phantom of the Opera, Broadway’s longest running show, is scheduled to close on Feb. 18.
The Andrew Lloyd Webber-composed musical has been playing at Broadway’s Majestic Theatre since January 1988. The musical has been a staple of the Great White Way, and popular culture, ever since, but has attracted more of a tourist audience in recent years — a demographic that has been slower to return amid the pandemic — and has seen its grosses waver, amid rising running costs.
Like all of Broadway, the production was forced to close when the industry was shut down on March 12, 2020. The musical reopened on Oct. 22, 2021 to great fanfare, which included Lloyd Webber DJ’ing to a crowd outside the theater. That fall, the musical saw a boost in grosses, alongside other returning classics, and was supported by federal funding in the form of a close to 9.9 million federal grant.

Bill Maher cut his critics off at the pass Friday night, certain that they’d once again label him Islamaphobic for pointing out that Salman Rushdie had every reason to be afraid of the “dangerous” religion.

In a milestone deal, Superights, the distribution arm of France’s Superprod Group, has pacted with ViacomCBS Networks International for Nickelodeon International to roll out “Anna & Friends” across the world outside North America.
Made on a brand-new addition to the Superights catalog, the deal was announced on Monday, the first day of MipJunior, which this year forms part of Mipcom. It also marks the first multi-territory Nickelodeon sale for the Paris-based Superights, and a massive first window distribution ensuring that the series will broadcast in nearly all international territories. Nickelodeon will specifically bring episodes to Asia-Pacific territories, excluding mainland China, as well as to Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.
In its storyline, “Anna & Friends” looks classic pre-school fare: Six-year-old Anna lives daily adventures with friends including impatient Froga the frog, thoughtful Ron the cat, overly-confident Bubu the dog and naïve Christopher the orange worm. The series’ “engaging” storylines are “full of heart,...

Announcing its second major rights pick-up in a matter of days, Superights, part of France’s Superprod Group, has secured global distribution rights to Tencent Video’s slapstick series “The Adventure of Little Penguin.”
Nathalie Pinguet, Superights’ deputy general manager, will introduce the 52-episode animated show to buyers at Annecy’s four-day MIFA market, which kicked off Tuesday June 15 in the fairy-tale looking French Alpine town. Superights will bring brand new episodes of “The Adventures of Little Penguin” onto the market at events throughout 2021.
The deal marks Superights’ second sales pact with Tencent Video, after their partnership on 52-part animated series “Osmond,” currently in development.
It also represents early fruit of a move by Tencent Video into international co-production from 2018 – on “Adventures,” with Melbourne’s Luce Creative – to create animated series which appeal not only to Tencent Video’s massive domestic market but also international audiences.

Superights, the upscale distribution arm of France’s Superprod Group, a co-producer on Tomm Moore’s Academy Award-nominated “Song of the Sea,” has licensed international rights to three new series, securing properties produced out of France, Spain, Belgium and Switzerland.
The acquisition marks the latest move from Superprod, founded in 2010 by Jérémie Fajner and Clément Calvet, which has made its name producing both animated series and features and runs its own animation studio.
In February 2021, in a new expansive thrust, Superprod acquired a majority stake in startup Italian animation studio Red Monk – an initiative which allows it to meet the increased demand for animation by expanding its own development and production resources, as well as strengthening its foothold in the Italian market.
Of the new Superights acquisition trio, “Croco Doc” is billed by Superights as being the first children’s series dedicated to exploring health issues in an amusing and educational way.

Guatemalan actor Enrique Salanic has been blocked from entering the United States ahead of the U.S. premiere of his award-winning movie “José,” in which he stars.
The film premieres in New York City on Jan. 31, but according to distributor Outsider Pictures, Salanic is still campaigning to be granted entry to the U.S. “José” has received critical praise so far, having already won the Queer Lion at the Venice Film Festival and a handful of other awards.
Attempts to bring the actor to the states have been fruitless. According to Outsider, the U.S. embassy in Guatemala has twice denied his non-immigrant visa applications, citing a concern that he is a “flight risk” because he lives with his parents in Guatemala and has no permanent address in the U.S.

“The Alienist’s” Emmy nomination in the Best Limited Series category came as a pleasant surprise to many people, especially as it got in over shows like “The Looming Tower” (Hulu) and “Twin Peaks” (Showtime), which according to our odds were expected to make the cut. The last time TNT was even in the running for Best Limited Series was in 2006 for “Into the West,” and the only time it prevailed in this category was 23 years ago for “Joseph” (1995). Can the cable network finally take home its second statue for this breakout hit?
The program benefits from not only being accessible to watch, but also from being based on a novel (“The Alienist” by Caleb Carr). Of note, the last three winners in this category — “Olive Kitteridge,” “The People v. O.J. Simpson” and “Big Little Lies” — were all based on novels. While “The Alienist” does deal with heavy subject matters such as child prostitution,...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: In honor of “The Trip to Spain,” what is the best movie trilogy?
Richard Brody (@tnyfrontrow), The New Yorker
Far be it from me to choose between Antonioni’s non-trilogy “L’Avventura,” “La Notte,” and “L’Eclisse” and Kiarostami’s explicitly-denied “Koker” trilogy of “Where Is the Friend’s Home?,” “Life and Nothing More,” and “Through the Olive Trees” (and I’m tempted to make a trilogy of trilogies with Carl Theodor Dreyer’s “Day of Wrath,” “Ordet,” and “Gertrud”), but if I put Kiarostami’s films first, it’s because he puts their very creation into the action. There's little question that Hollywood is a bit of a sexist industry. Take one look at two leading co-stars of different sexes in any film, and chances are there's at least a ten year gap between them in favor of the male lead. One recent example of this is in the flick Mr. Right, wherein the audience is supposed to believe that the 30-year-old Anna Kendrick could be the love interest for the 47-year-old Sam Rockwell. Even actor Daniel Craig made something of a joke of it a few months back when an interviewer from the Red Bulletin told him that in Spectre he was succumbing to the charms of an older woman.
Craig corrected the interviewer, saying:
"I think you mean the charms of a woman his own age. We’re talking about Monica Bellucci, for heaven’s sake. When someone like that wants to be a Bond girl,...

Most folks had their doubts when Disney first announced that they'd be doing a remake of the animated classic The Jungle Book. It reeked of a cash grab, and fell in line with their seemingly-lazy approach of taking their animated classics to live-action.
However, after all the footage we've seen, I've been completely won over by Disney. We're less than a couple week's from the film's release, and if you've been waiting to see a behind-the-scenes look at what the voice cast has to go through to get their voices on the screen, then look no further.

With Batman v Superman now out in theaters, it's time for the marketing to truly kick in for the next big blockbuster, which happens to be...Disney's The Jungle Book.
Disney has now released what they're calling an IMAX featurette, but in reality, it's a whole lot more. The clip is introduced by one of the film's stars, Lupita Nyong'o, and begins with the haunting introduction of Kaa, voiced by Scarlett Johansson. From there, the clip transitions into a standard trailer, but it honestly gives us what's perhaps our best look at the film to date.

While the Jungle Book trailers we've seen thus far have been great on spectacle, they admittedly haven't really done a whole lot to push a narrative. Those who haven't seen the original animated film (I'm sure they're out there somewhere) wouldn't even know what the story is about too much if they didn't peruse for the synopsis. That is, until now.
