The director of 1993’s enduring classic Fire in the Sky, Bloody Disgusting has learned that Robert Lieberman passed away at the age of 75 earlier this month after a battle with cancer.
Many horror fans consider Fire in the Sky to be the most terrifying alien abduction movie ever made, with one scene in particular being among the scariest in the genre’s history.
Released in theaters in 1993, Fire in the Sky was based on Travis Walton’s book The Walton Experience, which itself was based on Walton’s real-life tales of alien abduction.
In the film’s most harrowing scene, Walton (played by D.B. Sweeney) is experimented on by a group of aliens, first emerging from a slimy cocoon and then being subjected to various forms of extraterrestrial torture. Ducks fly together. It was true in the 90s, and it’s still true in the new Disney+ series “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” — they’re just far more exclusive about who they’ll fly with now.
In this continuation, the Mighty Ducks are no longer the scrappy underdogs, and instead have become the “if you’re not a winner, you’re a loser” team. They’re led by Coach T (Dylan Playfair) who is blunt and apathetic, who cuts our new hero Evan Morrow from the team without so much as a sympathetic pat on the shoulder. He simply says “At this age, if you can’t be great at hockey, it’s like…don’t bother.
The kids on the team are all either high-strung or outright bullies. They’re the cool kids in school, and as soon as Evan is no longer one of them, he’s...

That sound you hear is every millennial quacking. Twenty-nine years after “The Mighty Ducks” skated into our hearts, introduced the Flying V and the Triple Deke, and launched not just two sequels, 1994’s “D2: The Mighty Ducks” and 1996’s “D3: The Mighty Ducks,” but an actual NHL team, the Mighty Ducks are flying again in Disney+’s new series “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers,” premiering Friday, March 26. Except this flock has a new name altogether.
Developed by Steve Brill, the original creator of the trilogy, Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa, the 10-episode sequel series picks up in present-day Minneapolis and flips the script, a la “Cobra Kai,” as the Mighty Ducks are now the dominant force in youth hockey. After Coach T (Dylan Playfair) cuts her 12-year-old son, Evan Morrow (Brady Noon), from the Ducks, Alex (Lauren Graham) forms a new team of underdogs. Their name? The Don’t Bothers,...

Gordon Bombay is back, but a lot has changed since we last caught up with him. The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers will introduce a down-and-out Bombay who’s reached his low point living at the hockey rink he inherited from his mentor Hans. It’s a stark contrast to the smiling man we saw walking away from a cheering crowd in D3: The Mighty Ducks.
“He’s a little broken. He’s a little beat up by life, and he’s kind of hiding out,” Emilio Estevez, who reprises his role as Bombay on the Disney+ series (premiering this Friday), tells TVLine.

The Ducks will fly again in The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, premiering Friday, March 26 on Disney+. With Emilio Estevez reprising his film role as coach Gordon Bombay in the 10-episode first season, that raises questions about whether or not other former Ducks will lace back up— like maybe Charlie Conway (played by Joshua Jackson), Connie (Marguerite Moreau) or Adam Banks aka Cake Eater (Vincent Larusso)?

More than twenty years after the final Ducks movie, The Public and Culture Clash in AmericCCa director now says the Disney+ reboot series is his chance to get back into on-screen spotlight.
“It’s interesting to come back now using The Mighty Ducks as a re-entry vehicle,” the actor-director said during Disney+’s TCA panel on Wednesday.

In “The Mighty Ducks,” reluctant youth-hockey coach Gordon Bombay’s (Emilio Estevez) local Minnesota team went from worst to first. By 1994’s “D2: The Mighty Ducks,” the squad was literally the best in the world, winning the Junior Goodwill Games for the good ol’ U.S. of A.
TheWrap asked Estevez and screenwriter Steve Brill if that humongous plot leap, which of course saw the team benefit from a few non-Minnesota ringers, painted the franchise into an impossible corner for future projects.
“We did sort of max out on [‘D2: The Mighty Ducks’], but we just have to keep building these teams up and knocking them down,” Brill told us. “That’s the underdog story.”
Brill also really wanted to reiterate how much the outsiders helped the squad win its international competition. Of course, most of those kids were pretty limited to one skill themselves — and those didn’t all translate to the ice.

Game on: “The Mighty Ducks” reboot at Disney+ is a go, with Lauren Graham set to star as the new coach of the youth hockey team.
The series is set in present-day Minnesota, where the Mighty Ducks have evolved from scrappy underdogs to an ultra-competitive, powerhouse youth hockey team. After 12-year-old Evan (Brady Noon) is unceremoniously cut from the Ducks, he and his mom Alex (Graham) set out to build their own ragtag team of misfits to challenge the cutthroat, win-at-all-costs culture of competitive youth sports.
The 10-episode series will begin production this month and debut later this year on the streaming service.

People who watched a lot of kids’ movies in the 1990s might remember Mike Vitar. For those who are unfamiliar with that name, Vitar was a child actor who appeared in a number of kids’ movies in that period of time. A number of titles are due to expire at the end of the year, which means the its the end for some '80s and '90s favorites ("Batman," Beverly Hills Cop," "Happy Gilmore," "Spaceballs"), a handful of Oscar winners ("Gladiator," "Braveheart," "Kramer vs. Kramer"), and a few modern classics ("The Usual Suspects," "Love Actually," "The Breakfast Club").

The cast of D2: The Mighty Ducks reunited over the weekend, and took the opportunity to recreate their famous 'Flying V'.
The stars of the 1994 sequel - minus Emilio Estevez, Kenan Thompson and Joshua Jackson - met up to mark the 20th anniversary of the film on Sunday (September 21).
Marguerite Moreau, who played Connie Moreau, kept fans up to date on the reunion via Instagram, posting various pictures from the get-together.
One picture saw Shaun Weiss next to a poster of his character Goldberg, along with the caption: "Boys grow up to be men #Goldberg #mightyducks #20yearreunion."
The 1994 film was followed by another sequel, D3: The Mighty Ducks, in 1996.
Jackson - who played Charlie Conway - recently voiced his support for a fourth film, telling Time magazine: "I feel like a fourth film should happen, and if there was space for any of the original kids to come back and have a role,...

Charlie Conway forever! Time magazine got its ducks in a row this month (pun intended) when it reached out to Mighty Ducks star Joshua Jackson (Conway), director Peter Berg, writer Steven Brill, and more for interviews to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the cult classic's sequel, D2: The Mighty Ducks. (The Disney hit first became a classic with the 1992 original Mighty Ducks. In 1996, its third installment, D3: The Mighty Ducks, premiered.) Cue the Bash Brothers and "Goldberg!" memories—and read what they had to say! 1. Darker [...]...

It's been 22 years since The Mighty Ducks took to the ice, and only 18 years since their final match arrived in D3: The Mighty Ducks. So Time thought there was no better time to dive into an oral history of the entire Disney sports drama franchise, a childhood staple of many kids who lived through the 90s and ended up loving the classic rock of Queen by association. There's been rumblings here and there about some sort of return to the franchise, either in the form of an adult sequel or a remake, and with the aforementioned recent foray into the making-of the trio of films starring Emilio Estevez and Joshua Jackson, we have some details on that possibility, and also one potential, fairly dark storyline. Read on! First of all, franchise producer Jordan Kerner cautions that there's no active development of The Mighty Ducks 4, however, there's certainly interest from the studio,...

While D4 isn’t officially in development, producer Jordan Kerner has revealed that it’s not not in development, either. He just needs the “right story.” Should he ever find it, he’ll have […]

Update: Skydance, Annapurna are teaming up with Paramount to release the next reboot of the Terminator franchise on June 26, 2015. Laeta Kalogridis, who wrote Shutter Island and is a producer on White House Down, will write the screenplay with Patrick Lussier, known for the Scream movies (he also wrote the kids movie D3: The Mighty Ducks). Arnold Schwarzenegger committed to returning to the franchise in the title role when the property was owned by Pacificor. The press release mentioned the actor as participating in the first three films but didn't mention him in this rendition, so it remains to be seen if he will, indeed, be back.
Dec. 4, 2012 - The Terminator franchise has been sold off again, this time to proper movie makers. David Ellison of Skydance Productions, the producer of films like Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and True Grit, and his sister Megan Ellison of Annapurna Pictures, the production company...

I have never met a person as boundlessly enthusiastic as my Quebecois co-host Michael Ryan. We all have a reserve of positivity residing within us; some are smaller than others, but Mike’s was infinite. Upon seeing the news, posted to his Facebook page from his parents, Michele and Terry, that Mike had passed away, I was (and remain) heartbroken. In some small way, I feel as if I’ve lost a close family member, someone with whom I could heartily disagree on a weekly basis without worrying that I’d irreparably damaged our relationship.
I remember when Ricky D pointed me in Mike’s direction, after joining Sound on Sight as I began searching for my first co-host. I was stumped at first as to who could or would want to join me, but when Ricky mentioned Mike, he did so with a tone of “Oh, how could I have forgotten about him?...

Currently in cinemas alongside Stallone and the gang in The Expendables 2, and previously seen in one of the year’s biggest blockbusters, The Hunger Games, Liam Hemsworth has had a pretty excellent year, making a strong name for himself (beyond the early references to him as Chris Hemsworth’s brother).
He’ll next be starring in romance-drama, Love and Honor, opposite Teresa Palmer (Wish You Were Here, the upcoming Warm Bodies) in the female lead, and now the first trailer has made its way online.
“When Dalton Joiner (Austin Stowell), a young soldier in Vietnam, gets dumped by his hometown girlfriend Jane (Aimee Teegarden), he vows to sneak home during war to win her back. His best buddy,
Mickey Wright (Hemsworth), never one to miss out on a wild time, decides to go with him. They must get back to America, change her mind and return to the war without getting caught.

Grief can be an enormously difficult emotion to pull off on screen, mainly because we all deal with it in different ways and it's hard for most of us to imagine the tragedy that befalls Craig and Elise Landry, the couple at the center of Robert Lieberman's The Tortured.
The Landrys' son, Benjamin, is taken from them in broad daylight and murdered by a sadistic child molester and serial murderer. The killer is captured by the police, but cuts a deal. It's one thing to lose your child, but seeing that the man who took him away from you isn't getting nearly the punishment you think he deserves? That may give one…ideas. The drum I will keep beating throughout the entirety of this podcast, throughout however many years the show runs for, the one you will beg me to stop harping on (though I never, ever will) is internal logic. I don’t care what kind of movie you’re making, I don’t care if the audience is meant to be 5 or 50: you need to have internal logic in your story. If not, the story falls apart. Even great movies that are implausible manage to make audiences forget those implausibilities while it’s taking place. But movies that don’t try to make audiences focus on what’s truly important, movies that don’t have internal logic and don’t care, are the ones I dislike most of all.

After seeing umpteen films about cricket from Lagaan to Iqbal to Victory, Speedy Singhs is the first Canadian-Hindi film we see about ice hockey. But this isn’t your average sports based first with a dash of patriotism and individual storylines of triumph. Its a story about Rajveer Singh [Vinay Virmani] who is stuck between the expectations of following the family business and devotion enforced by his father [Anupam Kher of course] and his dream of greatness in ice hockey. But you can’t play ice hockey without a team so while papa doesn’t know, he forms his team, the Speedy Singhs, and tries to fulfil this desire.
Of course we have our dash of love with Camilla Belle playing the love interest Melissa, sister to coach Dan Winters, played by Rob Lowe that agrees to train the Speedy Singhs to victory. And maybe for a little fun, a dash of comedy supplied by Russell Peters who plays Sonu,...

Stars of American, Canadian and Indian cinema come together in new crossover film Speedy Singhs - and several of them gathered on stage in London for a press launch ahead of its UK release tomorrow (September 30).
Comedian Russell Peters and screen debutant Vinay Virmani joined fellow cast and crew members including comic/actor Gurpreet 'Ghuggi' Singh and co-producer Ajay Virmani as they addressed the audience and conducted a Q&A session.
Russell Peters and Vinay Virmani are pictured above at the event in London and (below) with Gurpreet Singh. A number of other photographs from the event are included below.
Peters said: "I always worry about what people will think of my films but I Lol'd when I saw this and I also got teary-eyed when I saw the film at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it premiered. The film is shot, directed and cut extremely well."

Hindi film cinema has been yearning for that cross over hit for quite a while and rap-fused bhangra tracks have been a part of the promotional arsenal of every recent Akshay Kumar release starting from Singh Is King (where he rapped alongside Snoop Dogg wearing a horrible fake beard).
Although producing and not starring, this time, Speedy Singh (also known as Breakaway in outside of UK and India) seems to be a mish mash of underdog sports films like Mighty Ducks (the director helmed the 3rd part of the franchise) and cultural identity conundrums of Bend It Like Beckham set in the world of Canadian Ice Hockey.
This time Akshay Kumar ropes in Ludacris and Drake for some cameos on the soundtrack and appearances in the movie.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Ra.One Trailer Realize that when we showcased the teaser trailer for this film [1] a few months ago you animals went wild with dozens upon...

This was a rather light week for films outside of my regular work load compared to recent weeks, but I do have a couple to share. One a bit more serious than the other, but it was nice to shake things up a bit.
Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985) Quick Thoughts: I was inspired by watching Warner's recent Blu-ray release of The Color Purple to watch the rest of the 1986 Best Picture nominees. After all, The Color Purple was nominated for 11 Oscars and went home empty handed. I thought the film was pretty good, if not a little manipulative, but I wanted to see what films it was up against and how they compared.
Kiss of the Spider Woman was the last of the five for me to see and I can say it's not that bad with solid performances from both William Hurt and Raul Julia, the latter of...

My third spotlight here at Rewind Recaps goes to ABC’s Once & Again, the critically acclaimed blended-family drama that aired from 1999 to 2002. I’ll admit that I didn’t watch O&A when it aired, but between the critical acclaim and a cast that boasts a number of faces familiar to me, I couldn’t help but take a look.
You’ve seen most of these people before, and probably not given them their due. The show is fronted by Sela Ward (CSI: NY) and Billy Campbell (The 4400), but there’s also a much younger Shane West (Nikita) and Evan Rachel Wood (Thirteen), plus veteran actors Jeffrey Nordling (24), Susanna Thompson (NCIS) and Marin Hinkle (Two and a Half Men). Put them all together in one show, and you have a recipe for something good.

My Thoughts: Footage from the Titanic director’s highly anticipated IMAX 3D epic Avatar has just been released to the public, after months of fanboy drooling and/or speculation. Spielberg has predicted this particular movie will be “the biggest live-action 3D film ever.” But what is the most enjoyable part about its first official trailer?
Its music. It sounds like a Nine Inch Nails song that is mercilessly skipping inside a CD-player. Neato!
The third shot seen in the preview is a close second, but the trailer for Avatar is doing it all wrong. Still high on itself, the film advertises itself with only one bit of dialogue, while providing a flimsy grasp of what the actual story is. Then, it loses control of its powers, and seems to give away too much.

The project will unite De Niro and Pacino, both friends off set; in the most screen time they have ever shared together. The $60 million production budget, backed by Nu Image’s Millennium Films and Emmett/Furla Films will follow two cops (De Niro and Pacino) chasing a serial killer. Pacino recently worked with Avnet on the critically panned 88 minutes, which has been released as a direct-to-dvd in Brazil, but has not shown in the Us. Tentative release date is December 3, 2007. Avnet’s sole significant contribution to the industry was 1991’s Fried Green Tomatoes; he has otherwise done a significant number of films targeting the tween audience.
