Turkish auteur Onur Tukel's debut tragicomedy is an absolutely stunning achievement. Made for under ten grand (way under), this masterpiece navigates the fine line between tragedy and comedy like a one-legged drunk on a tightrope. The animatronic lead is so lifelike that one suspects Tukel of actually using a real actor for some scenes... Like CLERKS (another black and white comedy, by somebody else), HOUSE OF PANCAKES is about 90 minutes. UNLIKE CLERKS, HOUSE OF PANCAKES feels longer. MUCH longer.Bill Cofflin (writer/director of RATMAN), in his screen debut, manages to steal the show at the very end of the movie with a brief but memorable performance as a towtruck driver. I won't go into detail here (you'll find no spoilers in these comments), but I highly recommend you hunt this one down and check it out. If you like funny, this one's for you.
