A Perfectly Watchable Film
deranger-12 September 2016
This is not a great movie but I would have been OK with sitting through it at the drive-in back in the day. My daughter says that any movie you can sit through should get at least a 3. I might even give this a 3.5. The story is about a man who wants to be more than a low paid factory worker and dreams of establishing a successful business. There are a lot of reasons to be discouraged but his family supports him through it all and he never gives up on his dream. I didn't like the final wrap-up at the end. It wasn't really needed. Otherwise it might have gotten a 4 from me, but it wasn't a deal breaker. Nice little G rated family movie.

It would be wackier if it had a plot.

Warning: Spoilers
I'll give John Astin for trying to make something out of this slice of life so called comedy about a man trying to struggle to make a living, walking out on his regular job and opening up a cab service, riding around all day in San Diego trying to get fares while struggling to stay afloat, pay bills and feed his large family. He's the only recognizable cast member outside of a few obscure cameo appearances, so the film basically rests on his shoulders. Basically nothing really happens other than the encounters with the various passengers he runs into, several groups of sailors on leave, offering them special deals. He drives across the Coronado Bridge several times to the famous hotel, so there are some great shots of that iconic landmark.

Films like this are at their best when they deal with quirky characters coming and going, and this film is overloaded with that so it is not entirely awful and painful to watch, with characters of eccentric personalities both troubling and humorous popping out, one woman physically as she changes in the back of the cab. This is a film that some audiences will find it very difficult to make it through, but in spite of an obviously cheap budget, I did find it for the most part fast moving even though after a while I was frustrated with the lack of a linear plot. Something tells me that this would have been better as a sitcom because it acts like one, and what little story there is could fill out 25 minutes rather than the 90 minutes this runs. It even plays like a sitcom, although this is definitely not one that would have had a live audience considering that most of it takes place on the streets of the city. Definitely a time capsule (that being an obscure one), and I did smile with slight guffaws a couple of times.

weird but ok

Warning: Spoilers
This movie actually did have some funny parts, like when he takes the guy to the airport and manages to steal fares from legit taxis. Then after all the funny stuff, this movie gets kinda dark out of nowhere. This is suppose to be a family movie? Pepper takes a girl to get a black market abortion, he gets his car stolen, thinks he will have to go back to a job he hates, goes a little crazy and chokes out Frank Sinatra Jr because he thinks hes a car thief. the end of the movie is on a higher note, but the whole movie is weird. its interesting at least.

Hands down - worst ever
robertfranz1 December 2010
I saw this while on a sub patrol in the early 80's.

We were having a competition to see who could watch the most movies during one patrol.

This was 16mm - pre vcr days.

I had to change the last reel myself, as everyone else, including the projectionist, walked out.

This movie remains the worst I've ever seen.

And that includes the documentary on iceberg lettuce I once watched at 3am in Aiea, HI while peaking on red dragon.

It's not even so-bad-it's-good - it's just bad.

I've tried to find a copy again over the years, to no avail until recently.

I see it's now available on amazon.

Watch me not reach for my credit card.

Interesting concept: a "comedy" movie that isn't funny
rickmacnamara23 July 2023
So, let me see if I understand this. We meet Pepper Morales, a married man with kids and a pregnant wife, at his job in a factory. The narrator tells us he is not satisfied with his job and we next see Pepper walk off the job after impulsively overturning a rolling cart filled with empty cans that scatter everywhere, making a mess that his former coworkers will have to clean up. At least he shook the hands of his coworkers before triumphantly exiting the building and leaping in the air for a freeze frame during the opening credits. Pepper goes home and announces he's starting a taxi business, spending almost all the family's savings on a broken down 1959 Cadillac and some take out food. This is during the first ten laugh-free minutes. It never gets better.

Maybe I'm just a cynical old guy, but I don't see a lot of humor in a man placing his family into serious financial jeopardy this way. Luckily for him his wife seems to be clueless about the potential dire consequences of Pepper's actions. He acts like someone experiencing a manic episode and by todays standards, everything he does is disturbing. Playing wacky music and speeding up the frames does not make on screen law-breaking and mental illness funny.

John Astin is funny in The Addams Family, but I cannot imagine what he was thinking to star in this steaming pile of crap. Cameos from the singer/satirist Alan Sherman and Frank Sinatra, Jr. Are also awful.

I gave this two stars because despite its deep flaws, it was fun to see San Diego in 1972 and literally tons of classic cars.

All John Astin All The Time.
mrz196613 June 2015
Sometimes in the course of movie fandom you manage to find a film that is life changing. Awe inspiring. A film that touches you on a deep and emotional level. "Wacky Taxi", however, is not such a film. This globule of cinematic wonder came to me in a box set of 100 films which cost me $17. That makes this a 17¢ movie. I was overcharged.

A short plot summary: Watch John Astin Run! Watch John Astin Purchase A Car! Watch John Astin Shave! Watch John Astin Buy Fast Food! Watch John Astin Wash A Car! Watch John Astin Emote! Watch John Astin play an immigrant from South America with no discernible trace of a Latin accent! And that is just the first 15 minutes. I...just...couldn't go any further.

I would like to take a moment to recognize robertfranz, the other reviewer of this "film" for finding the strength of will to voluntarily watch the entire thing. Sir, you are a better man than I.

If you idea of a good time is watching Gomez Addams doing mundane things then you will LOVE this film. If find yourself SANE instead, you probably will not enjoy it.

St Anthony is over lost and found
nogodnomasters1 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Pepper (John Astin) decided to quit his factory job in San Diego and start a cab service. He knows nothing about the legal requirements and buys a junker Cadillac. While some of his fares are over-the-top they are far from entertaining and perhaps the only thing "wacky" is the whimsical soundtrack they play in an attempt to let us know this is a comedy and not a bad drama.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.

Nothing particularly wacky about this film.
planktonrules3 July 2018
Pepper (John Astin) is a guy who's never happy on a job. He quits his latest job and decides, spur of the moment, to open up a cab business. Sadly, he's never considered any of the details--insurance, a reliable car, licensing and much more. Not surprisingly, his dreams of riches and steady work come to nothing through most of the movie...and it's all a bit painful to watch....especially as he tries to make it work with a broken down old 1959 Cadillac.

With a title like "Wacky Taxi", you would expect the film to be a comedy. Sadly, however, there really isn't much about this picture that would make anyone laugh...in fact, it's a bit dull. No....it's a LOT dull. Considering how dull the film is I am not surprised that it's a title few have heard of and it's rarely seen. I found it on YouTube...and wish I'd just kept looking.

So horrible
BandSAboutMovies27 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Pepe "Pepper" Morales (John Astin) already has four kids and another on the way with Maria (Maria Pohji). What better time than now to quit his job at a can company and paint a car so it looks like a taxi and be his own boss?

Directed and written by Alexander Grasshoff - who also made that Fascist warning movie we watched in high school The Wave that no one paid attention to - with directing help by Astin. This is a movie where John Astin beats up an innocent Frank Sinatra Jr., where Alan Sherman gets in the cab and a female soldier is taken to Tijuana for an abortion. In a family movie. Yes, that happened. Avco Embassy released it, so maybe they weren't used to family audiences.

Saw the premiere in 1972
gshyatt17 June 2021
This movie premiered as "Pepper" at The Lakewood Center Theater, Lakewood is a suburb 25 miles outside of Hollywood, which should have been indicative of the low expectations the studio had for this film. The meandering plot was impossible to stay involved with. And it simply wasn't funny. I did get to meet John Astin, so I give it an extra star.

Perfect!
jeffriesj5 February 2023
I loved it. Perfect for the era. A pick me up, feel good flick with no frills. Just real. Love it or hate it...just watch it. John Astin is a pro, here and everywhere. Loved the craziness of the filming. The plot is simple. We all want the American dream, but are scared to take the risk. This film takes all the risk and doesn't worry about losing. Many may see this as a "wacky" film, but it's perfect for its intended purpose. To motivate and entertain. No big budget, no special effects. Seemed more like a current reality show. I put this on because it seemed old, wacky and out of sorts. It was exactly that and exactly what I needed at that moment. It's wacky for sure. Watch it to the end. Thank you John Astin.

There wasn't a comedy in this, but they tried.
Sic Coyote12 June 2000
I bought this for £3 at a fleamarket as I collect old obscure films. The cover said, 'Family Comedy Colour' one of these didn't fit. Sure it is a family film and it's in colour, but there isn't much comedy in it except for the little bits where they really tried to inject some in. Actually it is quite a entertaining story of a poor man with kids who dreams of leaving his job at the canning factory and start up his own business. And he does, by buying an old junk heap car and painting taxi on the side he ferries people around town. But many things go wrong and he's discouraged from trying all the way by his brother in law but he carries on. It's a little strange in parts but this helps to keep you interested. Overall it's a nice family film with a bit of a grimy touch it manages to be a better than average tale of a man and his dream. 7 / 10

A weak comedy
stefanozucchelli10 April 2022
A man buys a taxi to change his monotonous existence. A mediocre movie with an ending that doesn't belong to him. The only scene I liked was the loss of the taxi. I could feel the feeling of abandonment and emptiness that captured the poor taxi driver's heart. Only decent scene from the movie or at least the only one I remember.

No Lazer blasters here.
sivaughn17 December 2023
In my opinion this is highly underrated. No not really a 10, but for fans of modern independent films, an unrecognized gem. John Astin is always a plus for me, like Alan Arkin or Steve Buscemi maybe? Yes, slow paced, but relatable to those who don't live in super hero tights or travel the spaceways, and worry about how day to day life sometimes goes the wrong way. Low budget and probably you'll see it in a blurry public domain version. Try not to hold that against it and relax and just appreciate it for what it is, not for what it could never be or never tried to be. Great performances by all. And Thanks to those who helped make this movie with their hearts.
