Chris Overton and his wife Rachel Shenton won the Best Live Action Short Oscar in 2018 for their moving film “The Silent Child.” Since then, Overton has blossomed into a key creator in the short film world with his company, Slick Films, producing a slew of contenders each year. His own entry, “In Too Deep,” won Best British Short Film at the British Short Film Awards in 2023 over, among others, another contender from Slick Films — Daniel Deville‘s “By Any Other Name.”
Slick Films’ new short, “Suzie,” has just made a splash, being chosen as the newest Vimeo Staff Pick (watch it here). This character study by writer-director Jimmy Dean follows a middle-aged woman on the day she tells her son she is getting a divorce. The film is anchored by a terrific performance from Helen Behan, who was nominated for the BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2020 for “The Virtues.

The BAFTAs reveal the longlists for this year’s film awards on Friday, January 5. Ten short films will number among those still in contention. Look for this trio of top-notch tales to make the cut and remain in the running to be in the final five when the BAFTA nominations are announced on January 18.
Tom Berkeley and Ross White won at both the BAFTAs and Oscars last year for their short film “The Irish Goodbye.” Their follow-up, “The Golden West,” is set in Ireland in 1849 and follows two sisters (Eileen Walsh and Aoife Duffin) who try to strike it rich in the gold rush. Their lack of success reignites their sibling rivalry. The Irish vistas deliver a feeling of pure cinema while the dialogue and performances are reminiscent of the best of the Coen brothers movies.

Short films — whether it be live-action, animated, or documentary — are becoming increasingly popular as more notable filmmakers begin to tell stories via this medium. Wes Anderson has four short films on Netflix, each adapted from a Roald Dahl book with “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” the most popular of the bunch. Pedro Almodóvar made “Strange Way of Life” with Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke. And Disney has the animated centenary celebration “Once Upon a Studio.”
These high-profile projects face fierce competition from some of the most up-and-coming filmmakers. Here are 10 other short films you should try and watch if you can. We think they’ll deservedly be serious Oscar contenders.

Directors were on-hand to introduce their films and talk about their work. The night featured shorts from both blazing newcomers and Oscar-winning filmmakers flexing their muscles once more.
Beth Park‘s “Wild Animal” screened for the first time after only being completed the day before. The short depicted a woman suffering disorientation, paranoia, confusion, and loss of identity in this smart exploration of new motherhood. Park called the film “a journey of a lifetime” and said that the film would never have been made without the sense of team spirit found in her first short.
Misan Harriman‘s short film — Netflix’s “The After” — was up next. Harriman is best known for his work as a photographer and has photographed many high-profile celebrities including Steve McQueen and Liam Neeson. He turned...

One of the benefits of HBO Max's "Harley Quinn" being a comedy is that it can explore familiar characters in unexpected, even biting ways. Bruce Wayne may spend his nights as the heroic Batman, but he's also just as out of touch as any other billionaire ("People pay for housing?"). The Joker is a maniacal super-villain, but after a stint with amnesia, he's also developed a domestic life as a suburban dad ("Lots of dads are serial killers!"). Commissioner Gordon is a nervous wreck and totally dependent on Batman, Nightwing has an inferiority complex thanks to Bruce's distant parenting, and being in the Legion of Doom is like a 9-to-5 job for villains, complete with coffee chats in the break room.
However, these details aren't just random; what makes them funny is how they're authentically rooted in the characters' personalities. In an interview with /Film's Ben Pearson, "Harley Quinn" co-creators...

Deryck Whibley made Sum 41’s upcoming album, Heaven and Hell, almost by accident.
It was the height of the pandemic and Whibley wasn’t really feeling inspired. And, for the first time, he was “just trying to relax,” he tells Rolling Stone. Mostly, he was focused on his other gig outside of his band: being a first-time dad.
With a firm lockdown in place, the only way for Whibley and his wife Ari to get out of the house was to put their newborn in a car seat and drive around L.

When you’re recovering from a break-up by writing a pop song, the ultimate kiss off needs to be wisely executed. Lulu Simon, daughter of Paul, found the formula for a deliciously pissed off break-up bop with her single “Wasted.”
Hailing from the school of Carly Rae Jepsen’s Kiss, “Wasted” is candy-coated synth-bliss that feels nostalgic for recent pop history. But right before they played the final song at the last night of their Turn It On Again reunion tour in 2007, Phil Collins addressed the crowd and spoke from the heart.
“As we stand here right now there is nothing else planned, so that adds a lot more emotion to this evening than this being the last show of the last tour,” Collins...

Last week on The Good Place, Eleanor confessed that she doesn’t belong there. Now she has to face the music… or Michael, actually.
In this exclusive first-look clip from Thursday’s episode (NBC, 8:30/7:30c), a sheepish Eleanor gets interrogated by Michael about all the unethical actions she took while she was alive. And since Janet is still out of commission, Michael is forced to do this the old-fashioned way: with a notebook and pen.

The good news: This Is Us‘ Jack spends part of the modern-day storyline in this week’s episode watching the Steelers game with his daughter.
The bad news: He does so as a pile of ashes in a nondescript urn. Yep, it’s as we feared — Milo Ventimiglia’s character is, indeed, dead. (Though it doesn’t stop him from wearing his team’s colors, which is dedication in the extreme.)

Telltale delivers an entertaining and emotionally gratifying setup in the first episode of the three-part miniseries The Walking Dead: Michonne. Fans of the comic book series will notice that this story takes place between issues #126 and #139 and finds our brave heroine without her familiar group of friends and battling some personal demons on her own, as well as dealing with the everyday dangers of the flesh-eating apocalypse.
The first decision players have to make raises the personal and philosophical stakes Michonne will come to face, and though the opening combat doesn’t reinvent what Telltale has established in the past, the quick-time action sequences that Telltale fans have come to expect offers suspenseful thrills and exciting machete-wielding walker executions. It’s hard to believe that Telltale’s first season of The Walking Dead made its impressive debut almost four years ago, and with the follow-up season also completed in 2014, it seems about the right time for the developer to return to the franchise that both expanded them into a wider audience and shaped the mechanics of all their subsequent series.
However, while a third season has been confirmed and we’ll likely get more details on it later this year, fans are receiving something a little different first in the form of the miniseries The Walking Dead: Michonne, a spinoff compacted into three episodes instead of the usual five, and focusing on an existing character from the franchise instead of one created for the games.

On the eve of release, developer Telltale Games has premiered the launch trailer for The Walking Dead: Michonne – In Too Deep, the first episode in the studio’s three-part miniseries that is due to drop tomorrow, February 23.

After waking up aboard “The Companion,’ a rickety boat captained by a mysterious man called Pete, the miniseries will have you discovering why Michonne parted ways with Rick, Carl and her other friends and survivors in the first place between issues #126 and #139 of Robert Kirkman’s comic book.

Telltale Games has taken full advantage of tonight’s return of The Walking Dead TV show, by releasing the first six minutes of its upcoming mini-series, The Walking Dead: Michonne.
Beginning in a nightmarish dream state, this lengthy introductory tease takes us into the tortured and regretful mind of our main character. Michonne, you see, has been unable to get passed events from her past, and must deal with those issues throughout her game’s three episode arc. Most noticeable, though, are the gruesome encounters, seemingly updated visuals (plus animations) and improved button prompts.
The Walking Dead: Michonne will begin to unfold its horrific tale nine days from now, on February 23rd, with its debut episode, In Too Deep. Stay tuned for our in-depth review, which will be up around launch.

Is it time to say "good night" to Homeland? I'm not calling for that kind of extreme sanction on this thing, of course. But in an episode like this one, with a nearly one-to-one mix of terrific character work and terrible plot hiccups, beautiful filmmaking and ugly implausibilities, it's worth running the question up the chain of command.
