“The Croods” and “How to Train Your Dragon” filmmaker Chris Sanders is returning to DreamWorks Animation with “The Wild Robot,” a new animated feature based on the New York Times best-selling book by Peter Brown. Sanders wrote the script and is directing the project.
Jeff Hermann is producing “The Wild Robot” and Sanders’ longtime creative collaborator Dean DeBlois will executive produce. No release date has been set. But you can still get very excited.
“The Wild Robot” follows Rozzum 7134 (“Roz” for short), a futuristic robot that washes ashore on a deserted island. From there, according to the official synopsis, “a tale of survival and discovery begins when she becomes the unexpected protector to an orphaned gosling, which she names Brightbill. Together they struggle to survive the harsh environment, but only succeed with the help of a close-knit group of misfit animals, who become first friends, then family. Ultimately Roz and...

Now that the first weekend of August is in the books, the most competitive part of the summer is over, giving us a reasonably good idea of what this year's biggest movie season looked like. Barring any surprise breakouts over the next few weeks, it's safe to call it a mixed bag. Sure, we had gargantuan hits like "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer," but we had massive flops like "The Flash" and "Haunted Mansion." Yet, while high-profile misfires took the lion's share of the spotlight, it was "Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken" that slipped through the cracks as one of the summer's biggest duds. More than that, it may end up as the lowest-grossing movie in DreamWorks Animation's history.
After a miserable sixth weekend in which the film grossed a mere $30,000 domestically, "Ruby Gillman" has earned just $40.8 million worldwide. This includes a truly miserable $15.6 million domestically. Against a $70 million budget, Universal Pictures...

So far, the summer movie season has seen its fair share of disappointments, and not even Harrison Ford‘s Indiana Jones could turn things around in the weekend before the 4th of July. Read on for the weekend box office report.
It’s been 15 years since Ford sported Indiana Jones’s trademark hat and whip, so his return as the popular adventurer in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” should have been one of the summer’s biggest event movies. Disney released the Lucasfilm movie into 4,600 theaters, making it one of the widest releases of all time, but that didn’t help matters much. After making $7.2 million in Thursday previews and $24 million on Friday, “Dial of Destiny” brought in a relatively disappointing $60 million over the weekend.
It averaged roughly $13,000 per venue, which is decent, but not enough for it to be considered one of the summer hits. For comparison,...

Fall is upon us, and so is Hulu’s list of every title coming and going from the streaming service in November.
Among the list of arriving titles is a new episode of Hulu’s original monthly anthology series, “Into the Dark.” November’s episode is called “Pilgrim,” and claims to be inspired by true events — in which a woman invites a bunch of Pilgrim re-enactors over for Thanksgiving dinner. But things get spooky when the “actors” refuse to break character.
Other new arrivals include Season 5 of “You’re the Worst,” described as a modern look at love, the complete first seasons of “Dollface,” about a young woman re-entering the world of women, “The Accident,” which begins with a deadly explosion at a construction site, and “Love Island: Australia,” an answer to the U.K. and U.S. versions of the beloved reality dating show.

On January 20th, 1975, Steven Spielberg and Universal Studios released Jaws. The movie landscape would be forever changed from that date. Jaws is widely credited as being the first blockbuster film because it was the first movie to make over $100 million (non-adjusted). The fact that the film had a meager $8 million budget meant that it was a huge cash cow for the studio and rocketed Spielberg to the the forefront of a new generation of filmmakers for a new era of movie mass-consumption. A movie about pirates. Based on a theme park ride. Starring the eighth lead from Lord of the Rings and the second fiddle from Bend It Like Beckham. From the director of The Ring remake (which was good) and The Mexican (which was, well, The Mexican.) Yes, expectations were let’s-say-mild for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, a film which looked on paper like a high-concept travesty-in-waiting. (The full title was ten words long.)

There aren't that many Brad Pitt movies that are kid-friendly. With the exception of his involvement in movies like "Megamind," "Moneyball," "Happy Feet Two" and "Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas," the majority of the films Pitt's made in the past 10 years either aren't ones his children would want to watch or aren't ones they should watch.
That's why Pitt turned to his sons when it came time to choose his next project. He told reporters at CinemaCon that he asked Maddox, 11, Pax, 9, and Knox, 4, what movie they would like to see him star in, and they decided on "World War Z."
"Four years ago I knew nothing about zombies but now I consider myself an expert," Pitt admits, according to Deadline. "This whole thing started because I just wanted to do a film my boys could see before they turned 18, one they liked anyway and they loved zombies. So...

Bad news, Brad Pitt. Your latest movie, Killing Them Softly, landed with a hard “thud” as audiences opted for films that have been in theaters for weeks now … leading to a lackluster weekend at the box office. Pitt’s reunion with Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James) went largely ignored by mainstream moviegoers, earning an estimated $7 million and landing in seventh place on the box office Top 10. To find a worse wide opening for Pitt, one has to look all the way back to 2003’s Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas – an animated movie that had the actor’s voice for its lead. The Weinstein Company didn’t put a huge marketing push behind Killing Them Softly, and it’s widely known that the...

Box office report: Brad Pitt's 'Killing Them Softly' misfires with $7 million debut, 'F' CinemaScore
The post-Thanksgiving frame has always been a slow one, and this year was no exception. Two new releases entered theaters — including the Brad Pitt vehicle Killing Them Softly — and both were met with unenthusiastic responses. Among holdovers, the Top 10 movies fell by an average of 51 percent. Basically, not too much happened at the box office this week. In fact, the top six movies finished in the exact same spots as last week.
Atop the chart was The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn – Part 2, which dropped 60 percent to $17.4 million, lifting its total to $254.6 million after three weekends. The $120 million Summit sequel is...

Computer-generated motion picture animation from “Vertigo” to “Toy Story” to the 3D spectacles of today will be explored during “The Development of the Digital Animator,” the latest installment of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Marc Davis Celebration of Animation, on Monday, May 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Several pioneers of digital animation will revisit the long path from laboratory to cineplex during a panel moderated by animator and historian Tom Sito.
When “Toy Story” burst onto the scene in 1995, computer-generated imagery was, for many, a bold new technique in animation. However, its lengthy and meticulous development can be traced back to its first public exposure with the mesmerizing title sequence for “Vertigo” (1958). Of equal importance to the technical developments were the influential animators and designers who devised artistic uses for engineering advances.
Scheduled panelists include:
Rebecca Allen, an experimental filmmaker...

Four new nationwide releases landed with a thud this weekend, which allowed Think Like a Man to repeat atop the domestic box office chart. The Top 12 earned just $97.1 million on the final weekend in Spring 2012, which is obviously way off from the same frame last year when Fast Five opened to $86.2 million.Think Like a Man fell 48 percent to $17.6 million. Through ten days in theaters, the movie has already made $60.5 million, which makes it the highest-grossing movie from April 2012 ahead of Titanic 3D ($56.3 million). Based on Sunday estimates, The Pirates! Band of Misfits was the highest-grossing movie among the new releases, though that isn't really saying much*the stop-motion animation flick claimed second place with a meager estimated $11.1 million. That's lower than Arthur Christmas's $12.1 million debut in November, which makes it the worst opening ever for British production house Aardman Animation.Considering Aardman's best opening ever is a paltry $18.8 million for Flushed Away,...

Puss in Boots was the undisputed box office champion over the weekend, with a $34 million haul that put it about on par with the year's other animated releases like Rango and Rio. But that's also lower than all of the Shrek films opened, especially given the bump for higher 3D ticket prices, and even if moviegoers didn't notice it, the stock market did. Reuters reports that DreamWorks Animation shares fell 7% on Monday morning, reflecting directly on Puss in Boots's mediocre weekend at the box office. In fact, the $34 million isn't just lower than all of the Shrek movies-- it's the company's lowest opening since Flushed Away in 2006. Yes, Puss in Boots-- a spinoff from DreamWorks Animatiion's indisputably hit series-- grossed less in its opening than the studio's lowest-grossing film since Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released its annual list of invited new members, and it’s clear they’re continuing to try to make their membership younger. On the list alongside veterans like John Hawkes and David Duchovny are a slew of twentysomethings, including Mia Wasikowska, Ellen Page, Jesse Eisenberg, Mila Kunis, Beyonce Knowles, Jennifer Lawrence, and Rooney Mara. The Board of Governors also decided to extend an invitation to Restrepo codirector Tim Hetherington, the first time Academy membership has been bestowed posthumously. As a side note, it’s also a hoot to now say the phrase Oscar voter Russell Brand.

Beverly Hills, CA . The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 178 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Those who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2011 to the Academy.s roster of members.

The Academy.s membership policies would have allowed a maximum of 211 new members in 2011, but as in other recent years, several branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them. Voting membership in the organization has now held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003.
In an unprecedented gesture, the list of new members includes documentary filmmaker Tim Hetherington, who was killed in action in Libya in April.

The Academy’s membership policies would have allowed a maximum of 211 new members in 2011, but as in other recent years, several branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them. Voting membership in the organization has now held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003.

More heart, deeper storyline, and more action is what this sequel brings to the screen. Reuniting the writing talents of Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, that penned the first installment of this soon to be trilogy, was a magnificent choice for the film. The characters have more depth, connection, heart-warming moments, and of course more fight choreography. Directed by Jennifer Yuh, known for Spawn – The TV Series and writing collaborator on other animated projects such as Sinbad: Legend Of The Seven Seas and The Real Adventures Of Johnny Quest – The TV Series, knows animation well and it shows by her distinct perception of the fight sequences and overall look of the film. She is not afraid to use different camera angles and close-ups to instant sky shots. This kept a very good pace while watching the film while also giving the audience a better look at the town and outlying areas.

When Does Brad Pitt sleep?
When he’s not starring in, or producing, movies — he’s got 27 reported projects on his docket — he’s spending time with partner Angelina Jolie, helping care for their six young kids, or he’s sitting behind a desk designing eco-friendly homes, or he’s touring the globe on humanitarian missions.
And this is no longer the golden-haired young man whose beauty blinded viewers in films such as A River Runs Through It, Legends of The Fall or Troy; Pitt turns 47 next month, rapidly edging toward the half-century mark.
It seems Brad Pitt believes sleep is overrated.
Looking closely at his career, and life, we see he’s always been a restless soul, searching for ways to escape anything that resembles a set plan.
In this month’s Megamind he voices his second animated character, Metro Man (he was Sinbad in 2003’s Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas...

The Prince of Persia movie soundtrack. That Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time might well be the finest video game-to-movie conversion of all time while still finding itself disparaged by the critics and less enthusiastically embraced by audiences than had been anticipated is testament to the staggering crappiness of previous entries in the field; a losers-all allotment, as hopeless to look to in a search for quality as it is to try and identify a cast member on The Hills who is not a vain, vapid nincompoop.
The fact that the Bruckheimer-produced PoP film was sired from the realm of pixels and parallax scrolling is not the only reason that its arrival was greeted with a narrow eyed glare of mistrust. There was also the uncomfortable reconfiguration of ethnicity which meant that the movie’s medieval fantasy Persia was populated by Brits (Arterton, Kingsley, Molina, Kebbell) and an American...

The Princess and the Frog soundtrack. In the early years of the 21st century it appeared that the hand-drawn animated feature was operating on borrowed time. While the pencil lines of Treasure Planet and Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas were stinking out the box-office, audiences were lapping up the CG-antics of Ice Age and anything at all bearing the Pixar seal. In America at least, traditional animation seemed destined to go the way of the woolly mammoth, the penny farthing, and Axl Rose’s humility - relegated to the status of historical curiosity. Computers were the shiny, shiny future of cartoon film-making, and any Luddite pencil-wielders who didn’t like it could naff off and go listen to an eight-track, while burning a witch, and moaning about the increasing influx of marauding Viking immigrants.

Surprise, surprise! As in Pleasant surprise, because Astro Boy, the CG-animated movie version of Osamu Tezuka’s 1952 manga character (later the star of several TV series), is an exciting, imaginative adventure. Catching it early Friday morning at a 34th Street theater, I found myself on the edge of my seat, butter popcorn in hand, unexpectedly delighted.
Is it an animated masterwork like Up or Walle? No. It’s more in the vein of a colorful escapade that offers real pleasures in its viewing (see also Kung Fu Panda and Coraline). CG animation Isn’T being re-invented, just beautifully practiced by director David Bowers and his team both here and in Hong Kong’s Imagi Studios. Now, I’ve met Bowers (who co-directed Flushed Away, another toon feature I liked), and I, once again, thought he’s a talented, nice guy. (Do I ever Not like someone I meet? Im me,...

First, the timeline! Blue Sky Studios' CG-animated Ice Age (2002) introduced three unlikely prehistoric pals---Manny the Mammoth, Sid the Sloth and Diego the Friendly Sabre-toothed Tiger. Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006) continued the fantasy saga while adding Ellie, a mammoth love interest for Manny, and her two wise-cracking possum "brothers" Crash and Eddie. They're all back for this second sequel---joined this time by outrageous weasel adventurer Buck Wild (Indiana Jones by way of Captain Ahab and Bugs Bunny)---as they await the birth of Ellie & Manny's baby and search for parental wannabe Sid in a colorful, dinosaur-filled land that time forgot.
The cast can be divided into the sedate (Manny, Ellie, Diego) and the scene-stealers (Sid, Buck, the possums). Sid is a particular delight as he ends up rescuing three lost, frost-bound eggs and nurturing the hatchlings who turn out not to be mammals but dinosaurs. And not just Any species...

Michelle Pfeiffer has inked with CAA. The signing marks the third representation change between the CAA and ICM in less than two years for the Oscar-nominated actress. She had been repped at ICM for more than 20 years before leaving the agency in January 2002 to sign with CAA. She then stayed at CAA for nine months before rejoining ICM. Her most recent onscreen effort was as part of the A-list voice talent of DreamWorks' Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas alongside Brad Pitt and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Last year, she starred with Renee Zellweger, Robin Wright Penn and Alison Lohman in the drama White Oleander for Warner Bros. Pictures. Pfeiffer has starred in more than 30 films, including I Am Sam, What Lies Beneath, Scarface, The Witches of Eastwick, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Batman Returns, The Age of Innocence, Dangerous Minds and One Fine Day. She continues to be repped by attorney Barry Hirsch.

Oscar winner Catherine Zeta-Jones is poised to take over Nicole Kidman's role in the Brad Pitt movie Mr. And Mrs. Smith. The Welsh beauty is keen work with Jennifer Aniston's hunky husband after problems with Kidman's hectic shooting schedule forced her to consider pulling out the project. However, producers are scrambling to find a way round the difficulties of Kidman's workload so she can play opposite Ocean's Eleven hunk Pitt in the story of a bored married couple who discover they are both assassins. If Zeta-Jones does end up in the lead role it will be the first time she has shared screen time with Pitt. They worked together on animated flick Sinbad: Legend Of The Seven Seas, but never met until its premiere.

After a 12-year absence, the nearly unstoppable cyborg from the future returned in Warner Bros. Pictures' Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, which stalked an estimated $44 million during the three-day Fourth of July holiday weekend. It has amassed $72.5 million since its release Tuesday evening. The Arnold Schwarzenegger starrer, from Intermedia and C2 Pictures, proved to be the fourth-biggest opening weekend of all time for the holiday frame. The Jonathan Mostow-helmed film easily topped the charts as the largest debut for an R-rated film during the holiday, beating its predecessor, T2: Judgment Day ($31.8 million). It also was a personal best for Schwarzenegger. But it wasn't all about machines this weekend. MGM's Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, starring Reese Witherspoon, was elected to the second spot on its debut session with a solid estimate of $22.9 million ($39.2 million since Wednesday). The first Legally Blonde opened on a Friday and racked up a $20.4 million debut. The third new wide release this weekend, DreamWorks' Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, crashed on the rocks of audience indifference as the animated film placed sixth with a discouraging estimate of $6.8 million ($10 million since its Wednesday debut).
Brad Pitt has lost out to a cartoon hound in his first animated feature - because test audiences preferred the canine to the movie hunk's sea-faring hero. Dreamworks animation experts revisited their new Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas cartoon feature when footage of their new canine creation, Spike, were more popular than scenes featuring their hero, voiced by Pitt. Dreamworks boss Jeffrey Katzenberg says, "We discovered how much the kids loved Spike and went back and put seven new pieces of Spike in the movie only weeks ago." But Katzenberg still has high praise for Pitt, who joins Michelle Pfeiffer, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Far From Heaven's Dennis Haysbert in the movie. He adds, "Brad was our first choice - he's everything I've dreamed of seeing Brad Pitt do in a film - he's heroic, he's a rogue, he's footloose and fancy-free."...

In what will be her first comedic role in several years, Michelle Pfeiffer is attached to star in the comedy She's Gone, in development at Beacon Pictures and the Walt Disney Co. There is no director yet on board the project. Beacon founder Armyan Bernstein wrote the script to Gone, which marks his first screenplay since 1999's The Hurricane. Gone is described as a sophisticated romantic comedy about a couple whose marriage is at a crossroads. The husband, not wanting to hurt his wife's feelings, hires another man to steal her heart. When the hired hand does too good of a job, the husband then has second thoughts. He changes his mind, but it's too late, and both men have to compete for her love. Bernstein is producing Gone with Mark Johnson (The Rookie). The project is being overseen at the studio by Disney production exec Jeff Clifford. The role marks a return to comedy for Pfeiffer, who in recent years has appeared in dramas like White Oleander and thrillers like What Lies Beneath. Her comedic credits include Frankie and Johnny and The Witches of Eastwick, among others. Pfeiffer, whose voice will be featured in the upcoming animated DreamWorks film Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, is repped by ICM and attorney Barry Hirsch. Beacon Communications recently signed a five-year production pact with Disney and has several projects in the works at the studio, including the Western Open Range, starring Kevin Costner.
Brad Pitt is the latest star to take on the role of adventurer Sinbad in a new animated DreamWorks project. The movie hunk will lend his voice to the heroic sailor in Sinbad: Legend Of The Seven Seas, which will also feature the voices of Michelle Pfeiffer and Catherine Zeta-Jones. DreamWorks boss Jeffrey Katzenberg admits he's thrilled to get the three stars' signatures on the project, which is slated for a summer 2003 release, and animators are currently working around the clock to try and make sure the animated characters have some of their real-life counterparts' characteristics. Katzenberg says, "We're trying to capture Brad's million dollar smile. For 10 years I've dreamed of getting Brad Pitt to play one of these great action- adventure leading men. He's just so charismatic."...
