The story is supposedly inspired in part by the life of singer Richard Tauber, who here has a less masochistic role than in some of his later films, where he is often the sensitive but heavy set man heartbroken because the woman doesn't want him. The early talkie interrupts sequences for explanatory silent style captions which is a device I didn't care for because it cuts up the sound track. A Bavarian mountain village inkeeper and church singer is invited to Berlin with its bewildering impressions of big city lights though he returns at the end to sing for the wedding of a friend and his sweetheart in the village, they had been sent away from seeing him in Berlin by a mean spirited woman.
