nothing better has appeared since then
chimera-1214 January 2007
It's such an excellent movie, Polish cinematography at its best, especially the final episodes which take place during the Rising. A wide range of young Polish actors gave exhilarating performances hard to match - Jan Englert as a cavalier resistance fighter stands out in particular. Some scenes are so poignant that almost unbearable, like the end of episode 4. And the series' haunting musical theme will stay with you forever. Despite being made in Poland under communism, it tells a lot about the Rising; I dare to say more than books like Rising 44 by Norman Davis, whose uncritical approach blurs the whole picture. To make a long story short - I think it to be the definitive movie on the Warsaw Uprising, way better than Wajda's "Kanal".
