Influenced by many mainstream films, notably QUEST FOR FIRE, Ron Sullivan's THE NEW BARBARIANS is a lavish production by porn standards, boasting a huge cast of familiar stars, but ultimately it sinks under its own weight. Adding to the confusion is the use of the same title for both parts 1 & 2 -I am reviewing just the first one, which ends in a stupid cliffhanger that makes you want to avoid the sequel.
The director himself, known as Henri Pachard during this phase of his career, portrays the white-wigged tribal elder Zarkon, who has a glowing green (emerald?) magic stone. Cast speaks minimally in English but also grunts a lot, befitting a XXX video.
Victoria Paris is Zarkon's daughter Talia and looks terrific dressed in animal skins. The plot is relatively easy to follow but uninteresting, with plenty of humping, horseback riding and fighting thrown in while the avid porn fan is straining to spot his favorite actors out of a cast list running to nearly 50 players.
Muscular Randy Spears as Brog has the lead role, warring with Gorgoo (Jon Dough) and Randy West limns a heroic figure. The crystal acts as an aphrodisiac (handy) and a time travel premise leads to a preposterously annoying ending worth spoiling: cast ends up at a modern shopping mall where punks make fun of their Conan (barbarian not talk-show host) style outfits.
Raven Touchstone, who IMDb's anonymous source claims is a noted erotic photographer, is responsible for the clunky script -her batting average for Paul Thomas and other top directors is mighty low - I don't think she can hit her weight. But interestingly, the video is tagged "A motion picture by Henri Pachard and Erica Boyer" in the opening credits, latter taking executive producer honors.
I assume Part 2's modern day exploits will be as silly as the French time-travel farce Jean Reno made, "Les Visiteurs" which was duly mocked by a XXX version starring Roberto Malone.
