One Hundred Years After Pasteur's Birth
boblipton6 February 2022
Charles Mosnier plays the adult Louis Pasteur in this silent biopic of the great scientist.

This was the first feature (co-) directed by Jean Epstein with Jean Benoît-Lévy, and is little more than an illustrated text of Pasteur's life and achievements. Mosnier does not appear in many spots. This may be part of a desire by the film makers to apotheiosize him. Another impulse might be the desire to downplay the animal cruelty that was a necessary part of his work. Only hands are seen in the inoculation of animals, or indeed, the trepanning of rabbits as part of his development into a treatment for rabies.

It was also Benoît-Lévy's first movie as director. He later became an expert in educational shorts.
