An eccentric film about an eccentric subject
penseur5 December 2005
While railway photography as a hobby makes sense, it is harder to comprehend trainspotting, that is writing down train names and numbers as they pass by. The film's portrayal of trainspotters - wearing their anorak "uniforms" - in general as geeks is therefore not without justification. But, one pretty girl (Natalie) who works in a pharmacy takes on a bet from a co-worker that she can entice such a young man, who she obviously fancies, into other pleasures. Wearing a very short black skirt and boots she partially succeeds in a signal box (switch tower) but her ministrations still produce less of a climax for him than some historic passing locomotives. Eventually though, that changes. Trainspotting is not the only thing parodied, among other things, women's obsession with cake decoration is the object of some fun too. But the central action is around the "train spot" and a High Noon style showdown for the fastest spot, one with with a cigar in the corner of his mouth a la Clint Eastwood is quite amusing. Those who like historic trains will enjoy the obvious anachronisms for a setting in the 1990s.

a film which has persisted in my memory ever since i first watched it
KandyPop9 April 2000
I saw this when it was shown on the Screen 2 season on BBC2 and ever since, tiny glimmers of it still stick around in my thoughts.

There is something about it that was so...the production, script, everything...just...little things like Gus's mum's tablecloth, or the notion of leatherclad trainspotters...it all added up to one really great piece. I guess I've always felt comforted by the sounds of trains...(eep) but there's something so pretty about an empty railway platform too...

I think there's a script of the screenplay which I might seek out...

It's a brilliant, brilliant film. It's just such a shame that my brother taped over it and BBC2 have a habit of never showing these things ever again...However, perhaps if they received requests by a few people they might take notice...

Excellent film, parodying all that is English...

I love this film. I want a copy of it. I can't get it but I want it anyway. And no-one seems to have seen it, which is a terrible shame as it is fantastic.

The plot is that Gus, a dedicated trainspotter, finds himself drawn away from his beloved train station by new girlfriend Natalie. His friends find it difficult to come to terms with the 'new' Gus and some classic scenes arise, including the fantastic 'high-noon' trainspot...

It's well worth seeing if you ask me...comic, tragic and chock-full of wonderful parodies of small-town Englishness. See it, if you can find it!

I love this film. I have a copy of this film. It took me years to track it down but I managed it. I remember seeing it on TV when I was a lad.

A Gem!

I have to agree with Kandypop and so glad to know others out there had the same experience.

This was one of those random gems when I was still a teen on a hazy Sunday it popped up on TV and it has stuck with me ever since.

I love how the Brtish film industry is filled with these understated gems that hardly get seen by the rest of the world. They really need to broadcast them more.

If anyone knows how to obtain a copy of this I would love to know please as it is seemings impossible and has been lost in time to the BBC archives!!!!

Its adapted from a theater play.

worth seeing

Wow loved this adaptation on TV and kept me interested all the way through. The plot etc. Loved almost every role that all portrayed. But i missed the very start as i was late viewing this brilliant fun drama. Its a great production in its own rite as "trainspotters and lovers" will find a soft spot for, as "Gus and Natalie" go thru the days, there romance blossoms ...

Worth seeing if you can get the chance but I've never seen a repeat of this amazing film.... Hope 1 day will come when there's a DVD out soon ... please let me know if there is :-) its "bostin".

Love Glyn (Pardoe) From Dudley in the Black Country
