2016 movies Things to Come (pictured) and Elle have earned French cinema icon Isabelle Huppert her – surprisingly – first National Society of Film Critics Best Actress Award. 2016 Movies: Isabelle Huppert & 'Moonlight' among National Society of Film Critics' top picks Earlier today (Jan. 7), the National Society of Film Critics announced their top 2016 movies and performances. Somewhat surprisingly, this year's Nsfc list – which generally contains more offbeat entries than those of other U.S.-based critics groups – is quite similar to their counterparts', most of which came out last December. No, that doesn't mean the National Society of Film Critics has opted for the crowd-pleasing route. Instead, this awards season U.S. critics have not infrequently gone for even less mainstream entries than usual. Examples, among either the Nsfc winners or runners-up, include Isabelle Huppert in Elle, Moonlight, Toni Erdmann, Casey Affleck in Manchester by the Sea, and Lily Gladstone in Certain Women. Hong Kong director, producer, and screenwriter Tsui Hark is to receive the Maverick Director Award at the 8th Rome Film Festival (Nov 8-17).
The award is dedicated to auteurs who have contributed to the invention of a new, non-conformist cinema.
Marco Müller, artistic director of the Rome Film Festival, said: “Tsui Hark will always be one step ahead. He has never stopped experimenting, delving deep into the genres, exploring the limits of technology as he follows its non-stop evolution.
“He has reinterpreted the Chinese filmmaking tradition, turning the codes and conventions of Western cinema upside down.”
Hark has had a prolific film career with past credits including Double Team (1997), Knock Off (1998) and Seven Swords (2005) as well as the film series Once Upon A Time in China and the A Chinese Ghost Story trilogy.
The award will be presented by French director Olivier Assayas (L’eau froide, Irma Vep, Les Destinées Sentimentales) and will be accompanied by a master...

Olivier Assayas looks back at the days following the events of May 1968 – and at his own youth – with a delicate wit
Link to video: Something in the Air: watch trailer here
The son of a movie director and now in his 50s, Olivier Assayas has built up an interestingly varied body of work as a critic for Cahiers du cinéma, authored several books including a monograph on Ingmar Bergman, and directed over the past 20 years a succession of modest, intelligent films. Most are concerned with moral problems and social responsibility in a middle-class setting like his Les Destinées sentimentales about a rebellious young man reluctantly taking over the family's prestigious porcelain factory in the 1920s, and Summer Hours, the tale of siblings and their elderly mother gathering to settle the estate of a recently deceased painter. Slightly different are Irma Vep, a cinéaste's celebration of Hong Kong movies and...

Olivier Assayas's new film is set amid the fallout of the May 68 uprising and the rebellious antics of its hero recall the director's own youthful protests. He talks about adrenaline rushes and breaking rules
Olivier Assayas, the writer, director and former film critic, is truly cool. He is the maker of some of the most playful, intellectual French cinema of the past two decades. His tastes are eclectic, his skill-set vast: he can move confidently between witty romps (such as his 1996 breakthrough, Irma Vep, one of the cleverest of all films about film-making, or the techno-thriller Demonlover) and lavish, patient period pieces (Les Destinées Sentimentales) or slow-burn emotional studies (Summer Hours). His most formidable achievement is the five-and-a-half-hour Carlos, a painstaking recreation of the rise of Carlos the Jackal made for television in 2010 but mounted with a scope and handsomeness to shame any Hollywood equivalent.

Olivier Assayas's engrossing movie traces the life of one of the 20th century's most notorious terrorists
Conventional wisdom suggests that we look to America for the essential models of the crime movie, but in fact, in addition to providing a name for that most respected of Hollywood genres, the film noir, the French were way out front when, early in the last century, Louis Feuillade directed a succession of sophisticated, surreal serials of underworld activities that remain unsurpassed, among them Judex, Fantômas, Les vampires and Tih Minh.
This tradition was carried on in Marcel Carné's classics of the 1930s and after the second world war by Jacques Becker with Touchez pas au grisbi (based on a Série noire novel by Albert Simonin that was accompanied by a 14-page glossary of underworld argot) and Jean-Pierre Melville, who specialised in gangster movies of a purity unrivalled by Hollywood.

With his latest cinematic outing, the five hour long epic Carlos, making the festival rounds, director Olivier Assayas (Summer Hours) will be the subject of a new restrospective thanks to BAMcinematek in Brooklyn in October.
Entitled Post-Punk Auteur: Olivier Assayas, the complete retrospective will run from October 9, until October 29, and will star on Saturday, October 9, with his latest film, and Criterion release, Summer Hours.
Among films showing, Carlos will show on October 23 and 24, with a special screening of his film Demonlover, which will include a Q&A with the auteur following the screening.
As with most retrospectives, this will offer a fantastic, all encompassing view of one of today’s most gifted filmmakers, and one who doesn’t seem like he’ll be slowing down anytime soon. While I’m not massively familiar with his filmography, I have seen a few of his films, such as the aforementioned Summer Hours,...
