Disney will ring out its $10 billion-plus global 2019 with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, in what is expected to be a $450M global opening, which is what Star Wars: The Last Jedi opened to in 2017, behind Force Awakens’ $528.9M. Skywalker rises in France, Germany and Italy tomorrow with previews in China with domestic previews starting Thursday at 6Pm. Broken out the expectation is at least $200M+ in U.S./Canada (with an asterisk — read on) and $250M abroad. This includes about $20M expected from China which has not warmed to the space saga, despite Disney’s best efforts to create a following.
But is Skywalker the last event pic mega global opening until 2021?
While there is bound to be big pics next year, you have to wait until 2021 before you get to the pent-up demand features such as Thor: Love and Thunder, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Matrix...

Yes, yes, there’s Willem Dafoe, but Ericson Core’s moving historical drama “Togo” is a canine-obsessed affair. And why shouldn’t it be? The Disney+ original joins a long line of classic predecessors like “Balto,” “Iron Will,” “White Fang,” and a ballooning number of “Call of the Wild” adaptations, though this one has a bit more on its mind than the rest of its doggy brethren. While even casual dogsledding fans likely know the name of Balto — a brave sled dog who inspired both his own animated franchise and a popular statue in Central Park — few are familiar with Togo, arguably the real hero of the so-called “Great Race of Mercy.”
, and Core’s drama seems poised to break out as the streaming service’s first true crowdpleasing hit. Tom Flynn’s screenplay wedges in a hefty amount of fact-based drama (with a few curious tweaks), and while those...

"Got one more in ya, pup?" Disney has debuted an official trailer for another big sled dog adventure survival movie titled Togo, to go along with their Call of the Wild adaptation (arriving in theaters next March). This movie is going straight to their streaming service Disney+, skipping theaters entirely. This movie tells the story of the sled dog Togo, who led the famous 1925 serum run to Nome, Alaska, running over 300+ miles with his musher Leonhard Seppala. Togo is the third movie we've featured this year about the 1925 serum run and the dogs involved in it - including Great Alaskan Race and Disney's own Call of the Wild. In the movie, Willem Dafoe stars as Leonhard Seppala, with a cast including Julianne Nicholson, Christopher Heyerdahl, Michael Gaston, Michael McElhatton, Jamie McShane, Michael Greyeyes, as well as Thorbjørn Harr. This looks better than any of the other sled dog movies, might be worth a watch afterall.

The neck crust and the snot-flying sneezes gave the Thompson/Shannon clan (aka Honey Boo Boo) the title last year for Best Redneck TV Show. They get their second nomination in the 2014 Viewers Voice Award but they are up against some tough competition including Discovery’s new Alaskan Bush People, which has generated strong ratings and plenty of online chatter, as well as, Cmt’s highest-rated series ever Party Down South. Other noms in the category include Animal Planet’s own Turtleman for Call of the Wild and A&E’s ratings juggernaut Duck Dynasty. Fox has been doing its part to bring classic films into the modern era with its line of Blu-ray releases aimed at honoring some of the most memorable and cherished features of the 20th century by letting movie lovers choose which titles get the HD treatment next. This time around, Fox offers us a delightful selection of eight films, some which are well known and others which border on the obscure side, but all of which ought to be seen by discerning cinephiles. The titles include the lauded Desk Set (starring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn), the Harry Belafonte and Dorothy Dandridge musical Carmen Jones, the 1935 adaptation of Jack London’s Call of the Wild starring Clark Gable, the supernatural romance The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, the swashbuckler adventure The Black Swan, the John Wayne flicks The Undefeated and North to Alaska, and Tyrone Power and Henry Fonda in the Western gangster flick Jesse James.

Most home video releases are mass produced and marketed by faceless conglomerates interested only in separating you from your hard-earned cash. If you look closely though you’ll find smaller labels who love movies as much as you do and show it by delivering quality Blu-rays and DVDs of beloved films and cult classics, often loaded with special features, new transfers, and more. But yes, they still want your cash, too. Before you accuse me of selling out and featuring a major studio in a column dedicated to smaller labels, please understand that they paid me very well. That’s not true. Instead let me point out that these releases come via 20th Century Fox’s Studio Classics line, which is both a small division and in this instance one very receptive to the desires of fans. They launched a program called Voice Your Choice earlier this year where film lovers got the chance to vote on...

In Field Of Dreams, Ray Kinsella’s wife, played by Amy Madigan, successfully shuts down the effort to ban Terence Mann’s books from the local Iowa school system. Terence Mann – played by James Earl Jones – was based on J.D. Salinger, the reclusive author of Catcher In The Rye.
Catcher was published in 1951, and has pretty much stayed on “attempts to ban it” lists since its publication. In fact, it was the most censored book in America from 1961 to 1982, even though, according to Wikipedia, it was the “second most taught book in United States public schools.” It most recently reappeared on the “most challenged books” list, published by American Library Association, in 2009.

Imagine if Jack London of "Call of the Wild" fame wrote the screenplay for "Night of the Living Dead" and you're halfway to getting the nailbiting suspense of "The Grey."
In a complete 180 from his silly studio outing "The A-Team," writer-director Joe Carnahan takes Liam Neeson and throws him into the starkest landscape imaginable: the snow-blitzed Alaskan wilderness. Neeson's tough survivalist and a ragtag group of plane crash survivors are pitted against a pack of snarling gray wolves with a taste for human flesh -- and if the men can put their differences aside, they might just live to see another day ...
1. Hey What’s That? "It ain't Frosty The Snowman, I can tell ya that."
2. We Need a Fire. Liam takes command, and when a tough Irish dude that can strangle a wolf with his bare hands talks, you listen.
3. What the f--- was that? "It ain't Frosty The Snowma ... oh right,...

NBC shook things up a bit this week by scheduling an extra installment of "Grimm" last night, but sadly, it was one of the weakest eps we've seen thus far. Hopefully the show will get back on track tonight with "The Three Bad Wolves". While we wait to find out if it does, check out this pair of promo videos for the episode featuring our favorite Blutbad, Monroe.
Inspired by Grimms' fairy tales, "Grimm" follows Portland homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt, played by David Giuntoli, as he battles supernatural forces. Bitsie Tulloch portrays his fiancée, Juliette Silverton, with Russell Hornsby as his partner, Hank Griffin, and Silas Weir Mitchell as his confidant, Monroe. Reggie Lee and Sasha Roiz co-star. It is produced by Universal Television with Hazy Mills Prods. and Gk Prods. Sean Hayes, Todd Milliner, David Greenwalt, Jim Kouf, Naren Shankar, and Norberto Barba are executive producers.

Judy Lewis, the secret daughter of actors Clark Gable (Gone With the Wind) and Loretta Young, has passed away at the age of 76, leaving behind a story of Hollywood stars whose fame was more important than their daughter. Loretta Young was 22-years-old while shooting the 1935 film "The Call of the Wild," where she met her 34-year-old co-star Clark Gable. The two went on to have a brief secret affair that ended with Young becoming pregnant. To protect their careers, the two decided it was best for Young to move to Europe during the pregnancy to avoid Hollywood gossip. When Lewis was born, she was immediately handed over to a series of caretakers so Young could return to stardom. When Lewis became 19-months-old, her mother brought her home and announced to newspapers that she adopted a child. The truth was not only hidden from the world, but also from Lewis. By...

Philadelphia — For decades, the identity of Judy Lewis' parents was one of the best-kept secrets in Hollywood.
Not until Lewis acknowledged her story in the 1994 autobiography "Uncommon Knowledge" did the general public know the truth: Lewis was not the adopted daughter of Hollywood starlet Loretta Young, but had been conceived out of wedlock by Young and Clark Gable while the two filmed "Call of the Wild" in the 1930s.
Lewis died Friday in the Philadelphia suburb of Gladwyne, said Rodger McKinney, owner of the Chadwick & McKinney Funeral Home. Services will be held Saturday.
Lewis, of Palm Springs, Calif., was raised in Los Angeles by Young as her adopted daughter. She was an adult when she learned that Young, a devout Roman Catholic, conceived her during an affair with Gable in the 1930s.
"At the time, what Loretta Young did was completely successful," said Leonard Maltin, a film critic and Hollywood historian.

John Collee, the screenwriter behind Happy Feet and the upcoming Walking with Dinosaurs, will adapt the book "The Secret Journeys of Jack London" into a movie script for Fox 2000. The book imagines the author of "Call of the Wild" and "White Fang" as a young man, traveling to Alaska to look for gold and encountering adventure and something "sinister in the frozen woods." Pete Donaldson is producing.

Apple's iPad managed to rebound as a topic of conversation in the comics industry this week, thanks to the outing of Marvel's own custom comic-viewing app. Off course, any news that breaks today does so under the specter of April Fool's Day, which did not go unnoticed, and I whole-heartedly support the stated opinion of writer Mike Oliveri, which has been retweeted below.
In other news, Jon Favreau went on the record to promise he'll do a commentary track for "Iron Man 2," which should please a great many fans. His pledge is documented below along with Ron Marz's wish for Tiger Woods and Jesse James and Mike Choi's promise if the Marvel app turns out to be a joke.
It's all in the Twitter Report for April 1st, 2010.

Dog-lovers and Shakespeare fans have a new movie to look forward to, together. Oscar-nominated screenwriter William Broyles Jr. has been hired by Universal Pictures to pen an adaptation of "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle," Variety reports. David Wroblewski's debut novel, based on "Hamlet" and including some elements of "Call of the Wild," was a selection of the Oprah Book Club back in 2008. It will now be brought to the big screen by Oprah Winfrey and Tom Hanks, who will co-produce through their respective companies.
"Edgar Sawtelle" is about a mute boy who runs away from home after the murder of his dog-breeding father and other subsequent misfortunes. He travels through the wilderness of Wisconsin and Canada followed by three pups from a litter he'd been raising himself until he decides to return home and face the man he suspects is the killer.
Even if you know how it ends,...

The comics Twitterverse was still lining up for "Ninja Assassin" this Thanksgiving weekend — save Rob Liefeld, who caught "The Blind Side." Brian Michael Bendis, meanwhile, was caught searching for his "Star Trek" DVD, which he claims has been stolen by Mike Oeming.
Some great artwork showed up in the Twitter Report feed over the weekend as well, with Francis Manapul posting a page from a charity book he's contributing to help flood victims in the Philippines and Jill Thompson showing off her "Nightmare Before Christmas" pages. Check those out, along with Chris Onstad's eulogy for Tiger Woods' Escalade and a shot of Dave McKean signing with David Lloyd and Mark Buckingham.

Epic competitions abounded last night as the Yankees bested the Angels to win yet another World Series appearance. New Yorker and Marvel Eic Joe Quesada was so overcome with hometown pride that he's even forsaken his allegiance to the Mets for the duration of the Mlb post season, according to his tweets.
Meanwhile, on the Internet, "Adventures of Dr. McNinja" creator Chris Hastings was involved in a cutthroat contest of voting, wherein his super-cute dog Commissioner Jim Gordon might have won him $1 million. He seemed to have the backing of nearly every webcomic creator on Twitter, that's for sure. Check out who was behind him, as well as the problem Mike Oliveri has with "New Moon" werewolves, which artist Andy Diggle is planning a new creator-owned series with and whether Gail Simone will ever want to write for Marvel again.
It's all after the jump in the Twitter Report for October 26, 2009.

If you are like me, you can track your love of monsters all the way back to one specific childhood incident: when somebody first read you Maurice Sendak's Where The Wild Things Are.
The story of Max, a wild child who travels to a remote island full of monsters and becomes their king, Wild Things is a brilliant fable. Where The Wild Things Are and A Confederacy Of Dunces were the two books I most dreaded seeing Hollywood adapt.
I needn't have worried. Spike Jonze's film plays like McSweeney's Where The Wild Things Are. It expands the book and is not afraid to be dark. Max(A great Max Records) now lives in the real world of parental divorce, loneliness and feelings of being powerless and alienated from his family.
When Max runs away and meets The Wild Things, they are the faithfully rendered monsters of the book.
