A forgotten New Age drama from Vivid Video, "The Cult" is no horror movie but instead a story about grifters, led in this case by no less than Janine, the porn label's hugely popular star at the turn of last century.

Working with sexy Charlie, she runs a New Age cult promising self-discovery through meditation and plenty of sex. No, it's not the Sixties but a contemporary tale of fleecing gullible folks in L. A. Principal dupes are led by Tyce Bune and his wife Alexandra Silk, plus another couple, Tyce's business partner Evan Stone and his other half Inari Vachs. They all fall under Janine's spell until Vachs finally finds out she's up to good when she encounters the cult's kinky male leader Bobby Vitale in a bathroom stall breaking down after Janine mercilessly humiliates him. A raid from the cops ends this saga.

Stealing the show a bit from Janine is Halli Ashton, busty and lusty as a cult member who's given a nothing role in the uncredited screenplay, but makes up for it sexually. Cast is not at their best here, especially Evan Stone, who drops his usual hammy approach to give a leaden, pretty boring walk-through as nominal male lead. Among the "good guys", Vachs and Silk are also left with one-dimensional assignments.

Ralph Parfait directed and handled camerawork, but the show was sunk by a pointless and unconvincing screenplay.
