"I was wrecked," Mariska Hargitay said about life after filming Law & Order: Svu's "Something Happened," a season 19 episode that broke from the show's long-running story structure and largely featured an interview between her character, Lt. Olivia Benson, and Melora Walters' Laurel Linwood, a rape victim…or was she? The interview between the two characters unraveled many layers of both of them. Laurel said her dad abused her for years, but it was really her sister, Leah (Joanna Going), who suffered the years of abuse. To get to the truth, Benson had to acknowledge some repressed emotions about her own father and his role, or lack thereof, in her life. Benson was a product of rape, she...

It may not look like it on screen, what with the seemingly endless emotional blows, but Mariska Hargitay said she is "having the time of my life" on Law & Order: Svu, 19 seasons on the job. Hargitay's Lt. Olivia Benson has been put through the wringer on numerous occasions, most recently in the Wednesday, Nov. 29 episode, "Something Happened." The episode, a departure from Svu's traditional episode structure, saw Hargitay flexing her Emmy-winning acting muscles in new ways. The episode was essentially a two-person play. In "Something Happened," Benson dug deep inside herself to address issues she's long repressed about her father, as well as the traumatic abuse William Lewis...

"Thrilling, invigorating, challenging, painful, exciting," those are the words Mariska Hargitay used to describe "Something Happened," the Wednesday, Nov. 29 episode of Law & Order: Svu. This isn't a normal episode of NBC's long-running drama, now in season 19. The episode is a break from Svu's traditional structure of crime, investigation, and litigation, and is largely a two-hander between Hargitay and guest star Melora Walters. Hargitay's Olivia Benson bares all to Melora Walters' Laurel, a rape victim who struggles to recount the events of her assault, in an interview with more twists and turns than a typical Svu episode. "Oh my gosh, I have got to tell you. I feel like...

30 years on from its release, we take a look back at Three Men And A Baby and the French film that inspired it...
In 1987, a comedy directed by Mr Spock with Magnum Pi, Sam from Cheers and the star of Police Academy was the highest grossing film at the Us box office. For context, it made almost as much money as Lethal Weapon, Predator and Robocop in that year combined. So where are all of its diehard fans?
Among the most successful films of the 1980s, Leonard Nimoy’s Three Men And A Baby stands out as a bit of an anomaly. Despite being hugely popular in its time, it seems to have faded out of the public consciousness without leaving much of a mark, and you’d be hard pushed to find someone who would name it as one of their favourite films. In fact, it...

The biggest mystery within Tomas Alfredson’s The Snowman concerns its own creation. How exactly did a movie like this get made by the people involved? It’s not a rhetorical question. If anyone reading knows something more than has been reported, please reply in the comments.
Starring Michael Fassbender as Detective Harry Hole, this yarn (from the novel of the same name by Jo Nesbø) concerns a serial killer with a penchant for making… well you know… and butchering women of a certain sort. Rebecca Ferguson serves as Hole’s colleague in a performance that feels so brutally fractured by whatever happened in the editing process that it demands an explanation.
The action is set in Norway, with flashbacks (starring a badly re-recorded Val Kilmer) meant to connect certain motivations to the present day. Like most of the film, it doesn’t really work. The central mystery never feels...

1.1 The Hood Maker
A hunched robot in a Pac a Mac creeps behind a pillar. A quintet of babies with floating umbilical cords dance a ring of roses in mid-air. A neon sign advertises the services of a four-breasted woman. Welcome, say the opening credits, to the world of electric dreamer Philip K. Dick.
Or more properly, a world inspired by Philip K. Dick. Episode one of this ten-part anthology series has taken liberties with Dick’s 1955 short story The Hood Maker, and quite rightly. That was written under the shadow of McCarthyism, when loyalty and betrayal were matters of state. This was written under the shadow of the Snooper’s Charter and corporate data mining. The beauty of how David Lynch and Mark Frost ended “Twin Peaks” is that so many clues have been left open to interpretation. IndieWire wrote about one theory, in which Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) has been positioned as the savior, a white knight for good who will attempt to save Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) over and over again against the forces of evil.
But while “The Return” traced Cooper’s slow awakening from his Dougie stupor to the familiar coffee-loving FBI agent, the season also marked a gradual transition from the depiction of women as victims of violence to figures who have actively been locked in the fight all along. It turns out that this has been a battle with female forces on both sides, ranging from the deep evil known as Judy and the frightening Sarah Palmer (Grace Zabriskie) to Laura as “The One” and even Audrey Horne (Sherilyn Fenn...

It’s been the question on the mind of nearly every “Twin Peaks” fan since the revival kicked off in May: When will Audrey Horne return? Up until last night, the character had only been mentioned in Part 7, when it was revealed she fell into a coma following the bank explosion and that Evil Cooper may have assaulted her in the hospital. But how exactly would Audrey return in the flesh? As each episode aired without a trace of everyone’s favorite Horne, it seemed more and more likely David Lynch and Mark Frost were building to some kind of series-defining reveal. Naturally, they delivered the exact opposite.

Audrey Horne finally appeared 37 minutes into Part 12, though “suddenly appeared” is probably the best way to describe what happened. We were finishing up another broadcasted rant from Dr.

For the second time this season, Twin Peaks has dropped an A-bomb.
Finally, Audrey Horne – and Sherilyn Fenn, the actor who made her a small-screen icon – makes her long-awaited return. And per usual for this show, creators David Lynch and Mark Frost dropped her into the revival in a way few of us could have predicted. Instead of giving her a grand entrance befitting the comeback of one of the original series' breakout characters, boom, there she was, revealed without fanfare in a smash cut from the previous scene.

I had other ideas of things I’d write about this week. I’ve been reading a lot of Jon Sable lately, so I was thinking of writing about that. That might be next week’s column. It was also Pride this past weekend, so I decided on a light piece on Pride with some comic and graphic novel recommendations. I’m still gonna recommend some stuff to you, but this piece isn’t going to be as light as I originally attended.
This year was the first year that the New York City Pride Parade here would be televised nationally since the first march nearly forty-eight years ago, a direct reaction to the Stonewall Riots. That is an incredibly big deal.
I attended as a spectator down Christopher Street across the street from the Stonewall Inn. The streets were packed and everyone seemed to be in the right mindset.

The grandfather is very sick. The only rational course of action: put him in a wheelbarrow, roll him to a shallow grave in the forest, shoot him in the head, and set him on fire. In “It Comes at Night,” the second feature from Trey Edward Shults (“Krisha”), this is a mercy killing, and it’s the audience’s introduction to a terrifying, mysterious world. Something has happened in the cities. Nobody understands quite what. Definitely a communicable disease, one so powerful it kills its victims within 48 hours. Probably some sort of electromagnetic pulse, too, one that has knocked out power,...

[Editor’s note: The following review contains spoilers for the “The Leftovers” Season 3, Episode 1, “The Book of Kevin.”]
There was so much to absorb in the first episode of “The Leftovers'” final season that it’s almost unfair of co-creators Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta to throw us such a massive curveball in the final seconds. “Who is Sarah?” will dominate discussion for the next week, if not for the rest of the season, depending on when Damon and Tom decide it’s time we learn the truth.
So let’s get it out of the way now: We don’t know who Sarah is, and we shouldn’t — not yet. “The Leftovers” may be built on a mystery that will never be solved (the sudden departure), but it’s also constructed around the answers to smaller, personal mysteries. Sarah could be Nora in the future, living under a new identity in the post-rapture world. Sarah could be Nora’s long lost twin and a descendant of...

Something happened at my midnight public screening in London of Danny Boyle’s sequel to his 1996 smash. A heckler at the back, perhaps influenced by alcohol or the fact that he had been ground down by the film’s incessant flashbacks and reminiscence, aimed at the screen and shouted “nostalgic shite.” And that half-sums up T2: Trainspotting, a movie whose advent looks only to have been beckoned by fans’ longing to see the original film’s gang back together. Still, I mean half when I say it, and Boyle’s verve as a director means there’s still plenty of vibrant imagery, alongside a script that, although lacking any of the electricity of the original’s state-of-the-nation wisecracks (“Scotland is a nation colonized by wankers”), is funny and disarmingly melancholic.

Lenny is an unhappy man. He's also a coward. But maybe it's all just a joke.
At this point, who really knows?
The more we delve into The Young Pope, the more odd it becomes. The Young Pope Season 1 Episode 5 was no exception.
Lenny definitely wanted to get it on with Ester, but he was afraid. He said as much to her after she put his hand on her breasts. He didn't resist, but he didn't go any further either.
Voiello thought this would have been a way for him to bring the young pope down, but it didn't work. His blackmailing of the young girl was a failure.
And part of that could be because Lenny Belardo is a saint. Sister Mary believes it's so, and after his failure to embroil Lenny in a scandal, so does Voiello.
Lenny may even have thoughts about it himself, but he doesn't believe them.

Marvel Comics has officially announced their new series All New Guardians of the Galaxy. The comic comes from writer Gerry Duggan (Deadpool, Nova), artist Aaron Kuder (Death of X), and colorist Ive Svorcina (Secret Wars).
The original character roster of Star-Lord, Rocket, Groot, Gamora and Drax are all set to return. There are a few interesting changes with some of the characters, such as Groot apparently being stuck in his tiny form with no one able to explain why he isn't regenerating, Then there's Drax the Destroyer, who is now Drax the Pacifist. According to Cb:
The series will pick up some time after 'Grounded,' the final arc of the current Guardians of the Galaxy series. All-New Guardians of the Galaxy #1 kicks off with the Guardians on a job and embroiled in a war between two of the Elders of the Universe, the Collector and the Grandmaster.

With a highly anticipated movie on the way, in addition to a new video game and having the animated series being renewed for a second season, it comes as no surprise that Marvel will continue to flood the market with all things cosmic in 2017 as it has announced a new comic book series in the form of All-New Guardians of the Galaxy.
Despite having “all-new” in the title, the lineup reflects that of what can be seen in the movies: Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket, and even baby Groot. Gone are the Thing and Kitty Pride, who had appeared alongside the team previously. It’s just as well, too, considering it’s not a bad idea to attract casual costumers looking to delve into comic book collecting upon seeing the latest cinematic offering. Synergy often makes for an easier sell, after all.

“I’ve never had that in my entire life,” Parker, 51, reveals. “I don’t understand what that is. I think that’s Bravo, you know, Housewives.”

Something happened between Azealia Banks and Russell Crowe, but it seems there are two sides to this story. The 25-year-old rapper took to Facebook Sunday night to describe what allegedly transpired between her and the Oscar winner in a suite at the Beverly Hills Hotel a night earlier. "To recap my night, I went to a [party] at Russell crowes suite, at which he called me a n----r, choked me, threw me out and spat at me," the since-deleted post read. "Last night was one of the hardest nights of sleep I've had in a long time." "The men in the room allowed it to happen," she continued. "I feel terrible today." A few hours later, Banks added another comment. "I have...

As many times as I've seen The Exorcist over the years, I've never really taken the time to analyze it from a critical perspective.
It's intense and frightening, yet despite the most iconic scenes, some of which were paid tribute on The Exorcist Season 1 Episode 1, I tend to think of it more as the story of a possessed girl than of the priests who come to her aid.
Right from the onset, though, the premiere makes it known this story belongs to Father Tomas and Father Marcus.
There is a family, and they are in trouble, but it's the portrayals of Father Tomas and Father Marcus by Alfonso Herrera and Ben Daniels that stand out in the pilot.
Through back stories taking place 18 months in the past and in Father Tomas' dreams (rather vivid waking nightmares, perhaps?), we learn Father Marcus was an exorcist working on behalf of the Vatican.

I don't know about everybody else, but I really enjoyed the first installment of Lethal Weapon. There were parts that were sort of goofy and unnecessary, but overall it succeeded at doing exactly what it was supposed to do: entertain.
While Lethal Weapon Season 1 Episode 1 was faced-paced and action packed, it also had quieter moments that showed how different it could be from the original films that starred Danny Glover and Mel Gibson.
What I liked best about the hour was being able to see the emotional side of Martin Riggs, played masterfully by Clayne Crawford. Right off the bat, we see what makes Riggs tick. He's on a job when his wife calls to tell him she's headed to the hospital to have their child. While he quickly takes care of the drug runners he's been chasing, Miranda is tragically killed.

Most of cinema’s best films are those that do rather than explain. These works are created by artists wielding airtight concepts insofar as attaining their goal of delivering a specific, emotion-fueled message. Kenyan creative Mbithi Masya‘s feature debut Kati Kati is a perfect example of what can be made when the right resources are supplied to the right people. Tom Tykwer, Marie Stenmann-Tykwer, and their One Fine Day shingle (originally formed to facilitate year-round artistic opportunities for children in Nairobi) helped with the former while Masya, co-writer Mugambi Nthiga, and his cast/crew brought the latter with their stirring look into the soul by way of purgatorial limbo. We don’t know how they got here or what comes next, but we do quickly understand the thing keeping them: guilt.

Just over two months after announcing her separation from husband José Nunes, author Elizabeth Gilbert has found love again - with her best friend of 15 years. In a revealing and emotional Facebook post, Wednesday, Gilbert, 47, revealed that she is dating fellow author Rayya Elias. She also admitted that the romance was the reason her 9-year marriage to Nunes - the inspiration behind Eat, Pray, Love - ended. "Rayya and I are together," Gilbert wrote. "I love her, and she loves me." Gilbert explained that she realized her feelings for Elias, someone she'd always considered a "role model" and "most trusted confidante,...

Now that the fat lady has sung, people who were around Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston are talking about their relationship or lack thereof, and a lot comes down to timing. You'll recall Taylor and Tom were first seen together at the Met Gala in early May, right before she broke up with Calvin Harris. There was hardly a breath between her breakup with Calvin and a major public display of affection between Taylor and Tom.

Something happened to Janie (Sarah Hagan). Something bad. This cataclysmic event — wherein quick flashes of screams by the pool mixing with bloody red liquid screens of abstraction are all we ever see — has led her to an agreed upon house arrest. Cared for by long-time nanny Irma (Barbara Crampton), this young woman must fulfill psychological tests with colored pencils and flowers, engage in yoga centering techniques, and consume a regimented series of medication. Every day she gets better. Every day she’s more like herself. Even Irma appears satisfied with the progress, talking to her father abroad about how it may be time to let her back out into the world. But this is the world that consumed her once. It doesn’t take long to threaten doing so again.

Bethenny Frankel says she can't believe the lies that were told at the upcoming season 8 reunion of The Real Housewives of New York City.
The 45-year-old Skinnygirl mogul spilled secrets about the taping on her SiriusXM show B Real with Bethenny recently, calling it "disgusting" and accusing costar LuAnn de Lesseps of making up a defamatory story against her.
"This was bad, she said, explaining that she felt drained for a week after. "I've never had anyone accuse me of anything like that. It was bad. We can't get into what it was, but it was bad."
"That whore comment that I retracted?...

I wonder if there will come a time when banks and post offices close to commemorate The San Diego Comic Con.
Because for at least some of you, the con is already a holiday. Not one of the important holidays, the kind that observe the primitive realities of our existence and offer hope for their continuance; you know – Christmas and New Year’s (the return of the light), Thanksgiving (the harvest), Easter (the renewal of growing things)…Your particular tribe may have different labels for these remembrances. (I’m still toting around bits of my Irish Catholic boyhood, and so I cite Christmas instead of, say, Hanukkah. Like the fella says, write what you know.) But certainly your tribe, somehow, celebrates them, subject to local variations, unless yours is a very exceptional tribe (and if it is, I cheer.)
Then there are the other holidays that have little to do...

A set visit embargo was lifted this morning for the upcoming David Ayer "Suicide Squad" feature with numerous reports going online about this highly anticipated film adaptation of the DC Comics title.
A couple of key quotes from those involved have also revealed how Ben Affleck's Batman fits into the overall storyline, and some vague details of the 'Adversary' - a villain that has yet to be shown in the promotional material. First up, producer Charles Roven talked about Batman's appearance in the film and why he was essential to it:
"He has purpose for what he's doing, and you couldn't tell the story of the Suicide Squad - as you mentioned so many of the characters that are in that squad had some interaction with him in order to get into Belle Reve, so you have to deal with that at the very least.

Warning: The following contains spoilers from Wednesday’s finale of The Americans. Proceed at your own risk, comrades!
Will the Jennings clan soon be singing “Back in the U.S.S.R.”?
On Wednesday’s Season 4 finale of The Americans, Elizabeth and Philip’s asset, William, was captured by the FBI. While on his deathbed, thanks to the bio-weapon with which he infected himself, he spilled some intel to G-man Stan about the spy couple. He fell short of revealing their false identities, but an unaware Elizabeth and Philip had to assume the worst as their handler Gabriel urged them to pack up...

Those looking for a sneak peek at what The Force Awakens entails can easily pick up many clues by looking at what Director J.J. Abrams has done in the past.
It’s finally here. People are lining up at theaters, commercials are blasting, and toys are flying off of shelves. But this isn’t just any Holiday season, this is a Star Wars Holiday Season. To put it mildly, people are excited for The Force Awakens. And they rightly should be. This is a big deal. Star Wars is perhaps the most popular movie-based franchise of all time. The original was a gigantic blockbuster and, two trilogies later, we still can’t get enough. What’s better is that Disney stepped in and decided that we could have more. George Lucas may no longer be involved, but rest assured, the franchise is in good hands. At least, the first film is.

When he first hosted Saturday Night Live back in 2013, Kevin Hart's episode was kind of a snooze. Something has happened since then, though: Hart has absolutely exploded in movies, with three starring roles in 2014 alone — all huge hits — not to mention an appearance in Chris Rock's Top Five alongside SNL cast members Leslie Jones, Michael Che, and Jay Pharoah. Now that Hart's stature as a movie star is nearly equal to his spot in the upper echelon of stand-up, there's an extra charge to his energy. He is electric and relentless. Like Louis Ck and Rock, both of whom Hart can call peers, he uses his monologue as a chance to do stand-up. It's a perfect introduction to the breathless, Sherman's March-style showmanship Hart brings to every single sketch.Although the material failed him somewhat in the second half of the show, Hart's performance never flagged, even...

In the '80s, we got Countdown and Channel 4. In the '90s, we got the Spice Girls and Channel 5. In the '00s, we got Dave and Top Gear repeats.
And in the whatever-we-call-this-decade, we've got ITVBe and Towie. Lots and lots of Towie.
Not content with ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4, the broadcaster launches ITVBe this evening, a home for "entertainment and lifestyle" programming. That basically means more Towie.
Who would want to miss this momentous moment in broadcasting history? All the big guns - Jamelia, Mark Wright and Denise Van Outen - are involved at some point tonight, and we'll be sticking it out for the duration.
We'll be live blogging the whole evening from the Peter Andre kick-off at 7pm to the closing of the reem Towie party at 11pm - just dipping out in time to avoid Joe Swash on Celebrity Dinner Date.
