Sappy Hong Kong ghost comedy.
OllieSuave-0073 May 2016
Hong Kong pop singer Sammi Cheng plays May Ho, a woman who after getting into a car wreck received a six sense in her left eye.

It is indeed a ghost movie, but like much Hong Kong movies with the supernatural theme, comedy is mixed in. In this case, it works a little in the movie as the plot was well-paced and acting was decent. There are also some sappy romantic scenes, which makes you sometimes think you're not watching a ghost movie. There's also quite a bit of gore in the film, which seemed out of place for such a sappy film.

Overall, it's not too bad of a film. It's watchable, has some unpredictable moments, but it doesn't surpass some of the more conventional and intriguing ghost comedies of the 80s and 90s.

Grade C

Okay but Not Great
IcarusMoon18 November 2002
This movie was kind of funny but nothing to be excited about. Just don't see this movie to get scare or anything like that. I do think this is a family movie, the jokes might be a little to over play but it was something that a person will enjoy watching for only one time. Whether the movie is romantic or not, I wouldn't say it is well maybe for half of it anyway. The characters were comedic and funny but they didn't over do it either. So over all, see this if you get the chance but don't expect anything special out of it.

Fascinating...

Warning: Spoilers
With many news about Sammi stating that her character she play this time in this movie would be very different from the previous ones she acted in, I went to watch this movie with quite a little high expectation and I was totally fascinated by the ending of this story as it was fabulous.

Firstly, I think Sammi Cheng made a very good attempt at this movie, though her acting still contains very much of her usual style which many people including me who adore, she managed to make a breakthrough performance and establish herself as a professional actress who can portray different roles.

However, this movie is very different from the long string of horror movies showing in Hong Kong currently. The plot and the idea of the movie was fresh. This is actually a romantic comedy with a beautiful storyline and is actually far from being categorized as a horror movie.

**Spoilers** Though the movie was far from reality and more of a fairy tale. It tells us about the power of love that exist even though a couple who just met for seven days. Even though, her husband might have died, he was always there for her and made sure she is going to be happy in the future before he fully "disappears". This is only revealed at the end of the movie which is just the right time the director could do so. On top of that, the title was so far away from what the movie really tells us and I think the director did so without wanting anyone to predict the entire plot of the movie which is even more brilliant.

I recommend this movie for any couple out there and it's also a very funny and entertaining movie ..Go watch it... i rate it (8/10)

romance disguised as a comedic ghost story
harlequindoll3 December 2004
This movie is a romance disguised as a comedic ghost story. It's a great chick flick for the lonely girl, whether she be a single girl, or her boyfriend or husband is away. It's hard to have any sympathy for the main character at first, but within 30 minutes you are drawn in. The movie never gets scary. It gets very amusing, often slightly absurd, then very very sweet. Very good character development and subtle plot twists. If you are a sensitive person, this movie can almost bring you to tears. Don't watch this movie with expectations, just let yourself be drawn in and it is a wonderful curl up with a carton of ice cream movie. Great for a Girl's Night In.

Not a good effort but worth your penny with Sammi Cheng around.
esteepswong24 July 2002
Lately the horror-movie bug has hit the Hong Kong film industry. As recent as now there was The Eye and before that there were Visible Secret II, Inner Senses, Horror Hotline...Big Head Monster and the continuation series of Troublesome Nights to name a few. However My Left Eye Sees Ghosts is a fresh attempt by the in-separable duo of Johnnie To and Wai Ka Fai and here they combined a mix-genre of a black comedy with a little touch of romance. Don't be fool by the title, as you will NOT see any eerie ghoulish scene in this movie even with BOTH your eyes. It is, as though these days Hong Kong songbird Sammi Cheng has been categorized as a comic actress as she has not played a serious role in a movie for a long time now. Sammi is in her usual acting self once again here but Lau Ching Wan's talent is totally wasted in this movie although he did managed to show his comic side in his character role.

In this movie Sammi is again playing a jovial and happy go lucky lady very much alike the role she played in her previous film, Marry a rich Man but this time she has a much meaner personality. The movie plot starts to develop after Sammi survived a suicide attempt in a car crash. Later she finds herself being able to see spirits with her left eye, a gift she then uses to help a deceased man (Lau Ching Wan) who also acts as her guardian angel, to fulfill his final wish. Get ready for a very unexpected ending in the movie.

My Left Eye Sees Ghosts is indeed a black comedy. In fact almost all the ghosts that appear in the movie are funny looking (like the fat hungry ghost) and non-ghoulish. This film would be a fresh change as lately we have been getting loads and loads of horror stuffs from Hong Kong and it's absolutely fantastic to have a different movie theme although still tagging on with the ‘ghost' theme.

Not really a good effort but worth a laugh or two.

Worth owning
nocturnallucidity21 May 2005
An interesting and hilarious Hong Kong comedy. I expected an extremely silly and quirky horror/comedy based on the apparently mis-translated synopsis. Instead, I got a fun comedy (no horror) with twists, a full robust plot, and some really touching scenes. Clearly built on a lot of Chinese mythology, this movie makes far more sense through-and-through than most "zany" Asian movies. It slightly falls apart at the end, in desperate need of some editing, and the beginning is slow. Overall, it's a wonderful surprise, this movie is highly recommended to all.

Similar Movie: Imagine Kung Fu Hustle with absolutely no kung fu. Just silliness.

A really nice surprise
GothamGal5 September 2003
I have to say that this movie caught me by surprise. I thought it was going to be a horror movie, along the lines of The Eye and it was not. It is a fresh comedy with a romantic twist. It is character-driven, very real characters that you can relate to. Sammi Cheng who plays May and Chi-Sing Lam who plays Sam put in great performances, both very funny.

The movie begins in a graveyard with the burial of Daniel, his family and ex-girlfriend sobbing over his grave. That's when the ex-girlfriend who helped Daniel and his family build a very successful purse business learns of Daniel's quickie marriage of 7 days to May. She now gets his inheritance, and she turns out to be a smoking, drinking and lazy gold digger.

One night while drinking and driving, she smashes Daniel's car and meets Ken, a ghost, who scares her soul back into her body to continue living. After an operation, she realizes that she can now see ghosts with her left eye and Ken will not leave her alone.

I recommend this movie as light-hearted fun, and it will definitely suck you into it.

I couldn't hack it
chris-227016 October 2008
I couldn't take this movie. Maybe it's a culture barrier, but I have pretty broad taste and tolerance for many films including foreign (non U.S.) films. I had an expectation that my wife and I would both be pleased by what we saw.

This was not the case and within about 40 minutes we abandoned the movie. The storytelling was poor and I quickly became confused as to what the point of the movie was. It was cheesy as some say, but that did not win me over. The production values were actually pretty high. The acting passable.

But these two elements do not make a film ready for an audience. I try to avoid explaining why it is others writing in submit one favorable review after another for a movie I had to put down. If they are not paid publicists, then there's no accounting for taste, right?

Comedic film with excellent story and script
herb200027 August 2005
Just seeing the title one might think this is a horror move or worse. It is actually very funny with may twists and turns. The characters unfold and find depth as the movie progresses. Also there is much sentimentality and sincerity that builds as the film progresses. Though just barely a notch below, My Left Eye Sees Ghosts is comparable in quality and comedic style to My Sassy Girl. So far have referred it to half a dozen people, each of whom watched and thoroughly enjoyed. It is worth finding this gem and gathering friends to watch. There twist and turns and I don't want to say anymore for fear I would give anything away.

Rom com with a supernatural twist
Leofwine_draca9 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I watched MY LEFT EYE SEES GHOSTS (2002, original title Ngo joh ngan gin do gwai) expecting a supernatural horror in the vein of the film that obviously inspired it, THE EYE, but it's a different beast entirely. This is much more in the way of a romantic comedy that just so happens to have a female protagonist who ends up seeing restless ghosts after a car accident. It's surprisingly light-hearted given the subject matter and struggles a little with an unlikeable protagonist, although as it develops it becomes more interesting as a exploration of grief and the afterlife.

Despite the presence of lots of ghosts and some FX in the cast, the fantastic elements here seem geared towards the gross-out rather than frightening. Lau Ching Wan's spirit occasionally turns into a CGI 'Crazy Frog' lookalike while an overweight ghost wants to be reincarnated in Ethiopia so she can be thin! I did find the plot interesting to a degree as it's told from a Buddhist perspective, with the ghosts wandering around until they go to 'Temple Junction' to await reincarnation into a newborn baby, but a horror film it certainly isn't and the stylistics have dated a little since release.

Smile-- nothing to be scared about
sangepengyou4 June 2005
Having seen a number of Asian horror films and Asian horror-sillies I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this. Much to my surprise, silly as it is at times, I got hooked.

I've never quite known what to make of Sammi Cheng. But I liked this film even if her character isn't exactly the most likable when you first meet her most unexpectedly at her husband's funeral. In fact, learning that she is the sudden mystery widow of a wealthy man whom you never really see is just one of a number surprises here. And it's also one of the biggest surprises to the dead man's family and former girlfriend who are not just beside themselves with grief, but also horror at the thought of her and her seemingly appalling ways. And that is probably the only real "horror" here-- and that is how it should be.

But, as the title says, there is more here than meets the eye-- like a left eye which inexplicably starts seeing ghosts. This is NOT the great Cantonese flick "The EYE" nor is it meant to be. ANd it isn't a would-be knock off. It is, at its heart, a supernatural romantic comedy-- but if Sammi's vision allows her to see ghosts, love makes her blind.

The primary ghost in question has a distinctly juvenile charm and is at times obnoxious, but the mother-in-law and, most notably, ex-girlfriend may just be the most delightfully scary critters around and always the ones who want to scream. In fact, they are a scream.

This is a light and breezy tale but a surprisingly nice diversion. Like its central character-- Sammi (May) this quirky little film has an equally quirky redeeming quality in the end.

Don't let the silly title fool you
pisforpublic3 April 2020
Honestly didn't expect much when watching it the first time, but it turned out to be an emotional roller coaster, rewatching after so many years and knowing the plot twist actually made me cried even more...

It is by far my favourite romantic comedy with a heartfelt message for those who have lost their loved ones and is going through grieving...

Just want to do it a little of justice here, since the movie was made for local Cantonese audience, it's likely that some jokes are lost in translations and need a little background knowledge of Chinese mythology to truly grasp some bizarre moments that is meant to make you laugh

Hope Hong Kong film industries can bring these type of movie back!!!

Great Romantic Comedy Movie
mindless_junk8 September 2003
A wonderful romantic commedy starring the ever lovely Sammi Cheng. It combines romance and comedy beautifully in a simple but yet fulfilling story, with ghost element involved. Think of it as Hong Kong version of Hollywood's heat movie "Ghost" only that this one has more Chinese taste and is definitely better. The music is beautifully but yet not intrusive.

Without giving too much away, the movie has a slight twist at the end, though the observant audience would probably recognize it early on. The twist helps to tie the movie logically together.

Sammi gave a great performance as a newly-wed widow who transforms herself... She has trully become a magnificient performer and can hold a movie on her own shoulder.

A 9/10.

Ridiculous, Cheesy, yet still entertaining.
niibu_yaa10 November 2003
Being somewhat of a film aficionado, hearing the synopsis of this film should have been enough to turn me off to it. Being a fan of Sammi Cheng I hoped that it would be worth watching, regardless of how cheesy the plot seemed. Like in all of the other movies of hers I've seen to date I was not disappointed. Something about Sammi's screen presence, makes even the most ridiculous candy coated film a delight to watch. While this may not exactly be an art film, it does stand on it's own two legs, and delivers a wholly entertaining film. In genre (ROMCOM) that has more or less been killed by banality, My Left Eye See's Ghost's manages to deliver some fresh life and originality. Granted it not mind numbingly original, but original enough to make even the auteur smile.

If you can drink and smoke, it means you can work. Come to the office on Monday. Be on time.
lastliberal8 August 2009
Chinese actress (Infernal Affairs, Infernal Affairs III) and pop star, Sammi Cheng leads a cast that has a decided family bent.

Directors Ka-Fai Wai and Johnny To work together often, as do writers Ka-Fai Wai, Nai-Hoi Yau & Kin-Yee Au. Actor Ching Wan Lau and director Ka-Fai Wai have collaborated eight times, and he has directed Sammi Cheng five times. All the major players should be very comfortable with each other.

I went in expecting a horror film, but there must be a problem with the translation, as it was a silly comedy.

Sammi Cheng (Cheng) marries a rich man and he dies suddenly. She spends her time eating, drinking, and lounging around the house - when she isn't shoplifting or driving drunk.

San-san Lee (Miss Hong Kong 1996) plays the spurned girlfriend perfectly. She was a riot! Sammi Cheng was outstanding, as was Ching Wan Lau.

It was not horror, but a tender love story.

Frightful fun, from the heart...
poe42626 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
***SPOILERS*** Delightful, surprisingly sincere effort that combines every genre known to man. At once spooky (although only marginally, to be honest, much like THE FRIGHTENERS) and funny (with fx of THE MASK variety, mercifully few and far between), MY LEFT EYE SEES GHOSTS boasts- among many other things- superior craftsmanship. The theme music pretty much sets the tone: it sounds very, very, very much like the theme from THE ADDAMS FAMILY (the tongue-firmly-in-cheek TV series that spawned two feature films). One wonders if the filmmakers decided to take the basic premise of THE EYE (and the other eye, EYE 2) and turn it on its ear. Whatever the impetus, this movie strikes a powerfully resonant emotional chord, even "when we cross The Midnight Junction." Don't pass it by.
