A SUPERB first film for Richmond independent film maker Megan Holley. Set in Richmond, Virginia in the year 2045, Holley's film is, on the surface, a film about Clive the clone of a deceased Nobel Prize winning food geneticist, and Clive's rebellious but tragic search for his own authentic identity. There's even a little platonic love story - one of the few in film. Viewers who revel in a good story will enjoy this funny, quirky, thoughtful film.
However the more attentive viewer can come away from this movie seeing the cloned Nathan Clive Barclay as a "wise fool", and potentially heroic rather than simply a clichéd young rebel. Like Holden Caulfield, Clive sees through the phony facades available to him and rejects them. Holley's film is a clever critique of the pervasive but hidden violence of corporate cultural conditioning the violence of being commodified, pushed into a mold and pressured to take on an inauthentic identity and unsatisfying life.
