Except for one of the women landing up with a black eye and another making a shocking announcement at the end of this enchanting chamber piece—a sort of Beethoven for the sexually impaired—nothing really ‘happens’ in the 90-minute celluloid discourse on post-menopausal sexuality and other related topics on how to be a woman past her prime, without guilt and the accompanying crimes.
A lot of the recriminations and remonstrations that are thrown back and forth between Shabana Azmi and Aparna Sen are selfconsciously stagey, like two people, two women, who have been so close to one another for such a long time that they can afford to ‘act’ in front of one another without the risk of being misconstrued or causing permanent damage to their mutual relationship.

Remember Fire, Deepa Mehta's super-controversial 1996 film about two lonely daughters-in-law, falling into a lesbian relationship? Shabana Azmi had played the lesbian bahu in Fire.
Now 20 years later she returns in yet another lesbian drama. This time Shabana doesn't play the lesbian, though. In Pakistani writer-director-actress Fawzia Mirza's American production entitled Signature Move, Shabana plays mother to lesbian daughter Fawzia Mirza.
Fawzia introduces herself as "Lesbian, Muslim, Pakistani, actor, activist, writer, producer, lawyer & creature of passion." The film, which seems autobiographical, casts Shabana as a mother who watches television soaps all day long and seems oblivious of the fact that her daughter is a lesbian and in a relationship with Mexican girl who is a wrestler.
Last week Shabana left for Chicago for the shooting.

Was Neerja Bhanot, the airhostess who on 5 September 1986 perished while trying to save lives in a hijacked aircraft, really a Rajesh Khanna fan?
In the film version of her life, the zany feisty and exceptionally courageous (as we soon discover) Neerja Bhanot is a fanatical Rajesh Khanna fan. Or maybe fanatical is not a word we ought to use, considering.
10 minutes into the film, when we see Neerja dancing to Rajesh Khanna’s ‘Bye Bye Miss Goodnight’ from the film Premnagar, I wanted to believe in the reality about Neerja Bhanot that director Ram Madhvani and his ingenious writer Saiwyn Quadras has so diligently and faultlessly put across, immortalizing the memory of the slain braveheart even while giving Indian cinema yet another example of its growing maturity.
Neerja is a film that wears its excellence casually, like a beautifully knit garment thrown on for a stroll in a windy park.

Braveheart Neerja Bhanot's family would be watching the film on Friday in their home-town Chandigarh. Sadly, her mother Rama Bhanot passed away in December days before the trailer of the film on her daughter was released. Shabana Azmi who plays Rama Bhanot regrets that the mother won't be able to watch the film. "I had the good fortune of meeting her a year before the film was offered to me. The Bhanot family had invited me to Chandigarh to present the Neerja Bhanot award for bravery. I took an immediate shine to Ramaji and was struck by her spiritedness and her warmth." Shabana feels putting across Neerja Bhanot's story is a big responsibility. "We are very grateful that Ramaji trusted us with telling Neerja's story. She gave us her blessings on the first day of the shoot. She passed away five days before our trailer launch. I wish she could have seen the film.

It feels strange to see the maverick ad-maker Ram Madhvani's trailer of Neerja, a bio-pic on the brave heart airhostess Neerja Bhanot who gave up her life fighting hijackers on board the ill-fated Panam flight on 5 August, 1986 which was hijacked by terrorists.
Madhvani last made Let's Talk, featuring Boman Irani's movie debut, in 2002 which is his only feature film so far. Thereafter it's been one long struggle for the maverick of the ad world to get his act together. Some years ago he was supposed to direct a desi interpretation of Lord Of The Rings with Mr. Bachchan in the lead. It didn't work out. More recently Madhavan was supposed to direct Kajol in the Hindi large-screen adaptation of the Danish series Pinoza. That too got shelved.

At a time when Islamophobia is at a peak, what with several barbaric terror attacks in various parts of the world being claimed responsibility by Islamic extremist groups, Shabana Azmi has dared to play the distraught mother of a young Pakistani man accused of and incarcerated for terrorism in Britain in the BBC One series Capital. It's a feisty role. And Shabana has a terrific time sinking her teeth into the meaty part of a Pakistani matriarch trying to hold her family together in London in a climate of rapidly growing distrust hostility and violence. I saw an episode where Shabana playing the Pakistani matriarch with her family convinces a human-rights lawyer to take up her son's case. Shabana is completely in-control of the situation in the plot and she speaks her lines without any accent. Says Shabana, "Capital is based on journalist-author John Lanchester's book of the same title.

Shabana Azmi is extremely angry with the abrupt cancellation of the Pakistani Ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali's concert in Mumbai. She feels political parties should not interfere in cultural matters. In a film that works both on a physical and emotional level, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan returns as a working mother, working to balance career with domestic responsibilities. When hotshot lawyer Anuradha Varma’s only daughter is kidnapped during school sports day. Anuradha is stricken with guilt for not spending more time with her child. It’s a prevalent dilemma for working women, and Sanjay Gupta who has so far focused attention on sexy item bombs and sexier guns opens up a debate on the travails of the working woman with flair and gusto, never allowing the thrills to override the somber underbelly of the plot.
Gupta brings flamboyance flourish and a restless energy to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s agile yet feminine role of a mother desperately seeking her daughter. In some ways I was reminded of Anurag Kashyap’s Ugly where a daughter is kidnapped. Kashyap’s film was much darker and ominous.

The fatwa against the very gentle God-fearing A R Rahman for his association with Majid Majidi's film Muhammad Messenger Of God has sent shock waves across the film industry. While many have expressed their solidarity with the soft spoken Rahman in private, not too many have come out to support him openly Fearless and forthright Shabana Azmi has spoken out. Reacting to the fatwa Shabana says, "Firstly it's important to understand what a fatwa is. It is being bandied about without knowing facts. A fatwa can only be issued by a mufti in response to a question raised by a person or a group. The mufti cannot issue a fatwa suo moto and neither can he impose it. A fatwa is purely a recommendation and is not binding." She also questions the authority and validity of those who have issued the fatwa against Rahman. "The Raza Academy has no...

All of last week Shabana Azmi was on tenterhooks as her mother, the legendary Shaukat Kaifi was in the hospital's ICU with a respiratory ailment. Unnoticed my mother became my child but she continues to give me strength when I'm feeling weak." Dividing time between shooting and mothering her mom was not easy for Shabana. Shabana stars in The Black Prince, the biopic on the life of Maharaja Duleep Singh who during the British Raj was wrenched away from his mother at age of 15 and forcibly brought to Britain where he was converted to Christianity and groomed like a Britisher. For many decades now, Sikh historians have regarded Duleep Singh's story to be emblematic of Colonial arrogance and intolerance. The film is now being directed by the Us-based Indian actor-director Kavi Raz in Northamptonshire in England. About her role Shabana says, "Maharani Jinda is the driving-force behind Duleep to return to Punjab and take back his land. He was taken away to England...

The casting of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's historic opus Bajirao Mastani just got even more interesting. Beating the formidable Shabana Azmi to it, her sister-in-law the very talented Tanvi Azmi has been signed by Slb to play the pivotal role of Bajirao's mother Radhabai. This bit of key casting was keenly monitored by industry insiders. Names like Shabana Azmi, Dimple Kapadia and Supriya Pathak were considered for the part. Shabana Azmi who was the first choice for the part was finally not chosen because the director is too intimidated by her personality to direct her. Interestingly Imtiaz Ali gives the same reason for not working with Shabana. Revealing details of how the grossly under-utilized Tanvi bagged the very important role, a source from the Bajiao Mastani team reveals, "Supriyaji was out because Slb had already worked his magic on her talents in Ram Leela. Getting Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra...

She has just delivered her fourth blockbuster, and it's just a 10-minute film which turns all the jokes on her Iq-level on their head.
The film conceptualized by the very talented quartet of youngsters who call themselves All India Bakchod (Aib) and directed by Shakun Batra (the director of the Kareena-Imran Khan rom-com Ekk Main Aur Ekk Tu) shows the very spirited actress visiting a brain-enhancement institution after emerging poorly in the Iq department on the Koffee With Karan show
What ensues is a hilarious intelligently executed skit on Alia Bhatt turning from 'Dolce & Gabana' to 'Wisdom & Shabana'....or some such.
Karan Johar, Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra have sportingly pitched in with cameo appearances, and so has Alia's family. Yes, Papa Mahesh Bhatt, mom Soni Razdan and sister Shaheen make an appearance in the films and even have a laugh or two at Alia's expense.
