One of the most talked about new horror movies at Sundance this year was In a Violent Nature, framing the slasher from the perspective of its undead killer. A brand new trailer and images give a closer look at the slasher madness ahead.
IFC Films will release In a Violent Nature exclusively in theaters on May 31, 2024.
Watch the new trailer below, along with new images teasing some of the carnage.
In the film, “When a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year old crime, his body is resurrected and becomes hellbent on retrieving it. The undead golem hones in on the group of vacationing teens responsible for the theft and proceeds to methodically slaughter them one by one in his mission to get it back – along with anyone in his way.

Ah the early 2000s. The Xbox, PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube were the hottest videogame consoles around. Limp Bizkit, Smash Mouth, Jennifer Lopez, Janet Jackson, and Usher were ruling the airwaves and little did we know we would be blessed with tons of horror video game movie adaptations as well. Granted, some weren’t that great, looking at you House of the Dead, Doom and Alone in the Dark. But there also were some fun films from this genre…Silent Hill and Resident Evil. At the time, both weren’t exactly loved by critics, but they did have their fans and have each spawned sequels. Today, we’re looking at the first Resident Evil (watch it Here) on this episode of Horror Revisited.
Let’s start back in January 1997. Resident Evil had already released on the Playstation One to critical fame as well as being adored by gamers. A German Production...

What do you get when you have a series with a trio featuring a half-oni/half-human, an immortal severed head in a bird cage, and a tough-as-nails maid that can beat up just about anyone? You get a really fun show in Undead Murder Farce , but also a series that has style for days. Even on its own with just the story and mysteries it tells, Undead Murder Farce would still probably be one of my favorite shows of the last year. The stylistic decisions with regard to shot composition, character and environmental design, scene transitions, music, and generally how it looks — amongst other aspects — elevate the show to becoming not only more fun to watch, but something that’s pretty special as well. One of the first things you’ll notice when watching episodes or even just seeing screenshots is that character design was an important aspect of the overall production.

The first word that comes to mind when thinking of how to write about Thea Hvistendahl’s Handling the Undead is: dread. To expand: slow, ponderous dread. Written by John Ajvide Lindqvist (and based on his novel of the same name), this is a zombie movie in the tradition of the author’s own Let the Right One In. There are zombies here but, as with the vampires in the latter work, the focus is elsewhere, mostly. Its genre construct is meant to elevate a deeper kind of pain. In this incarnation, a series of sad people dealing with different variations of grief must contend with an unsettling new reality: those loved ones they’ve buried have come back to life.
But only somewhat. Stand-up comedian David (Anders Danielsen Lie) loses his wife (Bahar Pars) in a car accident, forced to face their two children in the immediate aftermath. Hours later,...

Sundance 2024 will launch its virtual option this week for badgeholders and individuals who want to buy individual tickets.
It’s a wonderful option for those unable to make the long trip to Utah.
Last year’s Sundance had many great offerings virtually.
Films such as Sometimes I Think About Dying, and Kim’s Video were highlights from the 2023 virtual catalog.
This year has a lot of promising entries, and some have already generated tremendous buzz. For example, Steven Yeun and Kristen Stewart have a movie getting rave reviews.
While the virtual option opens for press tomorrow, movie lovers can dig into the Sundance 2024 line-up beginning Thursday.
Here is a list of films offered online possibly worth streaming this week at Sundance.

Perhaps the best way to describe the Norwegian zombie movie, Handling the Undead (Handtering av Udode), is as a mournful reflection on grief, on the struggle of the bereaved to let go of their departed loved ones. Based on the book by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist, whose debut novel, Let the Right One In, became one of the best vampire movies of the 21st century — yielding a solid enough American remake, a so-so Showtime series and an innovative British stage adaptation — Thea Hvistendahl’s debut feature is a slow-burn experience that demands patience.
The degree to which that patience is rewarded will depend on the viewer’s willingness to get lost in the mood of pervasive anxiety and sorrow in a movie whose elegant restraint make it more psychological study than horror. That applies even once the rotting flesh-eaters have been revealed. One selling point of the multistrand drama...

A new teaser poster unveiled ahead of the Sundance premiere of In a Violent Nature introduces “Johnny,” the undead killer behind the slasher that frames the slayings from his perspective.
“Nature is Unforgiving” the tagline reads in the poster, below.
Shudder’s upcoming slasher follows “the enigmatic resurrection, rampage, and retribution of an undead monster in a remote wilderness.” In other words, In a Violent Nature gives a twist on the slasher format by following the events through Johnny’s eyes.

Fresh off of their recent Undead or Alive event, Techland’s Dying Light 2 is kicking off its Summer of Horrors series of events with the “Good Night, Good Luck” update. Available now, the update brings considerable changes to the gameplay, with improvements to the parkour systems and an overhaul of the night experience.
With the day and night cycle, the “Good Night, Good Luck” update aims to “emphasize the differences in gameplay” by ensuring that the night has a “heavier, almost horror-like feel”. As a result, visibility is significantly reduced, making the player more reliant on the upgraded flashlight that casts dynamic shadows. Sound design also changes, with the focus on atmosphere, with music taking a backseat to effects. The infected now show up in more locations, like Volatiles roaming the rooftops, making no place truly safe after sundown.

If it's Halloween, it must be "Saw." The franchise, first conceived by genre maestro James Wan and scribe Leigh Whannell, set the horror world ablaze. So much so, that by the time the fourth entry hit theaters in 2007, Lionsgate Films positioned the franchise as part and parcel of the Halloween season itself. Like Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger, franchise antagonist John Kramer, otherwise known as Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) became a horror icon. Often only heard in voiceover through the use of Billy the Puppet — an indelible piece of horror iconography — John Kramer radically subverted horror expectations.
John Kramer, dying from colon cancer, develops a series of tests for those he perceives as taking their lives for granted. He traps ostensible participants in deadly scenarios, forcing them to make difficult choices to survive. While the series postures as some kind of moral imperative, it mostly serves as a series of Grand Guignol exhibitions of outrageous,...

Filmmaking brothers Michael and Peter Spierig have boarded the supernatural thriller series adaptation of the popular literary “Ben Walker” franchise, developed by Stuart Ford’s Agc Television.
Rob Carlson at UTA negotiated the deal on behalf of the Spierig Brothers with Agc Television President Lourdes Diaz, Agc’s VP of Legal & Business Affairs Anant Tamirisa, and VP of Scripted Television Matt Bankston.
Ford, Diaz, creator Christopher Golden, and Pete Donaldson for Donaldson Media & Consulting will executive produce.
The Spierig brothers hit the ground running in 2003 when their debut feature “Undead” won the Fipresci Award and enjoyed a North American release handled by Lionsgate. Their follow up, “Daybreakers,” starred Ethan Hawke and was a hit at that year’s Midnight Madness in Toronto, before again enjoying a theatrical run again handled by Lionsgate.

In the eyes of this lifelong Batman fan, Gotham will forever remain a wonderful part of the character’s enduring mythos. I’m aware of how a percentage of you scoff at how it retold the Dark Knight’s beginnings – and those of his villains, for that matter – but it’s important that creators keep things fresh. After all, our hero couldn’t have gotten this far if everybody rehashed the same tales over and over again.
Over the five years that Gotham had been on the air, I couldn’t help making comparisons to Smallville in various news articles and reviews. And at a time like this, it’s hard not making another one. I say that because while both shows had a similar goal in fleshing out the backstory of a beloved icon, Smallville covered much more ground during its ten-season lifespan. The first trailer has been released for the Saw sequel Jigsaw and if you're a fan of the Saw franchise, you're gonna love it. As you might expect, the trailer shows off lots of new and inventive ways of torturing and killing people. I've gotta say, it would be a complete nightmare to be in the situation that these characters find themselves in.
Bodies are turning up around the city, each having met a uniquely gruesome demise. As the investigation proceeds, evidence points to one man: John Kramer. But how can this be? The man known as Jigsaw has been dead for over a decade.
Jigsaw was directed by German filmmaking brothers Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig, of the films Undead, Daybreakers, and Predestination. Lionsgate will release the film on October 27th, just in time for Halloween.

John Kramer's influence is far reaching and his desire to play deadly games seemingly never ceases, so it's fitting, then, that Lionsgate has officially revealed the title of the next Saw film to be Jigsaw.
Scheduled for an October 27th, 2017 release, Jigsaw is directed by Michael and Peter Spierig (Predestination, Daybreakers, Undead) from a screenplay by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger (who previously worked on the screenplays for Piranha 3D and Sorority Row). The franchise's producers Mark Burg, Gregg Hoffman, and Oren Koules are all returning for Jigsaw.
A sequel of sorts that's unsurprisingly rated R, Jigsaw is set in the cinematic world created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell, which kicked off with the 2003 short film Saw, followed by a feature film version of the same name that made a big impact on the modern horror scene and was continued in six sequels.
The cast of Jigsaw includes Mandela Van Peebles, Laura Vandervoort, Hannah Anderson, and Brittany Allen, with Tobin Bell potentially returning to reprise his role as John Kramer, aka Jigsaw.
We'll be sure to keep Daily Dead readers updated as more details are revealed. In the meantime, let us know what you hope to see in Jigsaw, and check out the teaser image shared on the official Saw Facebook page below:

The other week a production listing indicated Lionsgate was officially set to relaunch its "Saw" franchise with an eighth film currently titled "Legacy". That project would be shot in Toronto staring mid-September and running through to late October.
Now, that listing on the Ontario Media Development Corp. site has been updated and indicates that German-born, Australian-raised twin brother filmmakers Peter and Michael Spierig ("Daybreakers," "Undead") have come onboard to direct the project - an excellent choice for the franchise as the pair are coming off their highly acclaimed time travel drama "Predestination".
Series producers Mark Burg and Owen Kholes will return to produce the new film which boasts a script by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger. James Wan and Leigh Whannell, who originated the series, will executive produce. No release date is currently set for the sequel.

The Spierig brothers’ self-financed debut film was filled with severed limbs, cut-price but surprisingly sophisticated special effects and lashings of humour
Many prominent film-makers have cut their teeth making low–budget horror movies. Undoubtedly, the ability to create elaborate visual environments using scant resources is appealing to producers and financiers. Big hitters including Peter Jackson, Sam Raimi and James Cameron kicked off their careers with splatstick flicks – involving aliens, demons and killer fish respectively – as did the German-born Australian film-makers Michael and Peter Spierig.
The Spierig brothers’ 2003 debut Undead was a hands-on affair; they shared duties in writing, directing, producing, editing and visual effects. Their self-financed budget totalled about $1m: an astonishingly small amount given the visually high-end result, on a par with the sophistication of many more expensive movies that come out of the Hollywood studio system.

Ethan Hawke had a pretty great experience at SXSW this year. It marked the hometown premiere of Richard Linklater's "Boyhood," and he was also there with a new film from Michael and Peter Spierig. He starred in their last film, "Daybreakers," back in 2009, and having him onboard for "Predestination" was what allowed them to get it made. The Spierigs fascinate me. Their first film, "Undead," was stylish and lovely, but I thought it was also dramatically inert, miscast in a critical role. Hollywood's been flirting with them since the moment they made that film, and "Daybreakers" looked like a big step forward, with recognizable movie stars like Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Sam Neill. It didn't connect, though, and now five years later, they're back with a much smaller film, although no less ambitious than anything they've done so far. When I sat down with them at SXSW, there was...

Back in 2003, the Spierig Brothers directed a low budget farmhouse zombie horror called Undead. It was an entertaining and imaginative debut, and everyone looked forward to their next offering. It turned out we had to wait a while. In 2009, they released Daybreakers. Another imaginative genre offering, with an entertaining cast and some neat ideas. What would their next movie be?
After another long wait, we arrive in 2014 with Predestination.
Shown as the opening film for day four of the festival, Predestination is a difficult film to talk about without totally ruining it. So I’ll give you this much: after a tense opening sequence which introduces us to the film’s antagonist the...

It's hard to believe it was way back in April 2012 when we first got word that Hammer would be filming a new movie onsite in the Winchester Mystery House, but the project is now back on track with a new writing/directing team we're all quite familiar with.
From the Press Release:
Filmmaking brothers Michael and Peter Spierig have been tapped to rewrite and direct Hammer Films’ Winchester, a supernatural thriller based on the world famous Winchester Mystery House in San Jose.
The filmmakers are rewriting a script originally penned by Tom Vaughan that tells the story of Sarah Winchester, heir to the Winchester firearms fortune. Hammer is eyeing an early 2015 start date.
After the sudden deaths of her husband and child, Sarah Winchester came to believe she was cursed by the rifle's victims and the lethal legacy of the "gun that won the West." At the instruction of a spiritualist medium,...

Following strong notices for their breakout zombie film "Undead" in 2003, Australian genre filmmakers Michael and Peter Spierig teamed with Ethan Hawke and Sam Neill for the vampire action flick "Daybreakers" back in 2009. Five years on, they're back for their third feature "Predestination" which also stars Hawke along with Noah Taylor and Sarah Snook.
Dropping horror in favor of complicated sci-fi, this might be their best effort yet. Based on "Starship Troopers" author Robert A. Heinlein’s 1960 short story "All You Zombies," the action follows a Temporal Agent who must pursue a criminal that has eluded him throughout time and at the same time ensure his own survival.
Actress Sarah Snook has scored a strong reputation here in Australia for her work on the TV series "Spirited" and films like "Not Suitable for Children". Here she takes on what appears to be a meaty role where half the time they've adjusted...

Shane Krause has a refreshingly candid view of the commercial prospects of The Contents, a self-funded supernatural thriller which marks his directing debut.
.If the film turns out to be any good we will get interest. from distributors and sales agents, says Krause, who co-wrote and produced the film with his regular collaborator Shayne Armstrong.
.If it doesn.t it will die the death it deserves to. The amount of money at risk is pitifully small. If it doesn.t work no one gets hurt..
The cast and a small crew worked irregularly on the film for the past six months shooting on locations in Brisbane. It.s 80% completed; still to come are the visual effects elements created by Steve Boyle whose credits include The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Bait 3D, Daybreakers and who.s just worked on Chris Sun.s low budget horror film Charlie.s Farm.

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...
