As cinephiles look on to what is anticipated to be an amazing year in film and television, it’s almost unbelievable that two decades have passed since the release of certain 2004 movies. 2004 was packed with several exciting, high box-office-earning sequels, first installments, and standalone films. Most notably, the year presented several blockbusters in several genres. Interestingly, memorable movies like Starsky & Hutch, You Got Served, The Prince & Me, White Chicks, King Arthur, Man on Fire, The Machinist, Catwoman, Kung Fu Hustle, and Hotel Rwanda were all released in 2004. Although 2004 may seem a distant past to a...

Marques Houston is being criticised for saying that women his age often come with “baggage or kids”.
The 41-year-old singer and actor, who is married to 22-year-old Miya Dickey, was attempting to explain why he preferred to date women who were younger than him.
“A red flag to me [was] always with a woman that had a kid,” he told Page Six. “Nothing against single women, but single mothers with children are a red flag for me.
“I tip my hat and respect women that are raising children on their own,” he added. “But when I grew up, I never really wanted to have kids.
“I would talk to my dad a lot, and he would always tell me to have your own kids because you never know what the baby daddy’s are about. So if you’re gonna have kids, make sure it is with a woman that never had kids.

After making more than $1.4 billion at the box office, producer Will Packer has gotten into the streaming game with “Praise This.”
The Peacock original marks Packer’s first time producing a movie that wasn’t destined for cinemas. While the new distribution plan might seem like a reaction to the hit or miss theatrical business — or the kind of pivot that would happen after a box office bomb, which Packer has yet to suffer, by the way — that’s not what’s behind the change in strategy.
“Malleable” is a word Packer has found himself using quite often in reference to the current state of moviemaking.

There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.
The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).
HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

"Honestly, this whole thing comes as a complete shock to me." What did they do at summer camp?! Rlje Films has released the official trailer for a thriller called Always and Forever, the latest film from the director of You Got Served - Chris Stokes. This looks a bit like I Know What You Did Last Summer, but more of a suspenseful thriller than horror. After a tragedy reunites Nicole with her childhood friends, they each find themselves in danger, targets of a deranged stalker. Nicole knows this can't be a coincidence. The secrets of their past are coming back to haunt them. Starring Cynthia Addai-Robbinson as Nicole, with Robbie Jones, Lauren London, Wood Harris, Loretta Devine, Rocsi Diaz, Erica Tazel, Vanessa Curry, and Deborah Ayorinde. Not so sure this looks any good. If these kind of melodramatic "we all did something we wish we could take back" suspense films are you jam,...

November can be a slow month for streaming services. Amazon, however, is entering into 2020’s penultimate month with some steam.
Amazon is really beefing up its TV library in November 2020. Both Community (which arrives on Nov. 8) and Scrubs (Nov. 14) will be added to Amazon Prime this month and in the process complete the streaming trifecta: Netflix, Amazon, Hulu. That’s pretty impressive stuff for both shows. And then on the film side of things, November 1 sees the arrival of The X-Files: I Want to Believe, Twilight, and the Underworld franchise. Somebody didn’t tell Amazon Spooky Season was over and bless them for it.
As for the originals, Alex Rider is the most intriguing TV series here. That is based on the British spy novel series and premieres on Nov. 13 on IMDb TV (which is available to all Prime subscribers). That will be followed by Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series on Nov.

You Got Served is a little known film featuring the pop band B2K, with members of the group in opposing dance groups, as they go about ‘battling’ other groups in dance competitions to earn a living. The reputation of each crew is really all they’ve got to fall back on, but David and Elgin had something else on the side that they kept trying to quit but couldn’t seem to get away from. When a group from Orange County manages to beat David and Elgin’s crew by using one of their own people and copying their moves, the two have

The requirements for a successful movie mashup really depend on the ultimate goal of the one doing the mashing. Maybe you’re looking to prove two different movies are actually the same movie, so you match them up beat-for-beat like this Avatar/Pocahontas mashup. Maybe you’re aiming for maximum comedic effect, so you pick movies from opposing sides of the quality and genre spectrum, like The Wizard Of Oz and You Got Served. Or maybe you just realized Harrison Ford was in two movie franchises and figured that’s a good enough reason to edit them together.
That seemed to be enough for French filmmaker Fabrice Mathieu, the creator of “Raiders Of The Lost Darth,” a mashup of (you guessed it) the opening scene from Raiders Of The Lost Ark and various aspects of the Star Wars franchise. The film that introduced the world to Channing Tatum stands far above some of 2006’s more cringeworthy outputs, and it was even ahead of its time
The plan was not to write about how good Step Up is 10 years later, honestly, because the plan was to write about the idea that Step Up was part of an early-aughts wave of urban dance movies, wherein “urban” was a euphemism for “skimming off the surface of black culture to give edge to a movie about white people”. The early 2000s were a weird time in pop culture, when we celebrated a lot of trashy stuff that we would rip apart today: Justin Timberlake’s cornrow/bandana headband combo, the not-so latent homophobia in Superbad, the sexism percolating throughout Knocked Up.
But Step Up does not belong in that riff. Because, upon very close inspection on the occasion of this aluminum anniversary, Step Up is actually great.

There's this Roland Emmerich movie "Stonewall" coming out about the riots at New York's Stonewall Inn in 1969 that paved the way for the Lgbt civil rights movement. We discussed earlier how the trailer's cloying feel seems disappointing. Now we have a poster to ogle. I'll be: It does not get better. Now, now: I have not seen this film. I don't know how successfully it will defy our expectations and present an accurate picture of the uprising. But I did have to check multiple sources to make sure this poster wasn't a fraud. Look at it. Look at those ragtag, smiling kids. Is this a poster for a critical Lgbt moment or Six Flags? It's time to rename this movie. Here are the best ten options. 1. Step Up 4... Civil Rights 2. So You Think You Can Disturb the Peace 3. The Sandlot 3: We Play Ball Like a Girl 4. Xanadu 2:...

South Park is about to begin its 18th season in the UK, and despite nearly two decades of episodes, it doesn't show any sign of getting 'lame', as Cartman might say.
Unlike other rival shows, Trey Parker and Matt Stone's cartoon has got better with age, and continues to push boundaries and stay relevant.
To celebrate its return, we have chosen our personal favourite 25 from its first 247 episodes.
25. Woodland Critter Christmas - Season 8
A thoroughly bizarre but memorable episode, in which Stan finds himself in the middle of the woods with a bunch of seemingly cute woodland animals. With an irritating voiceover narrating his every move, the critters turn out to be the most evil creatures known to man. Things are pretty f**ked right here, as he would say. Eventually, it is revealed that Cartman is the creator of such an awful story, and it's all just so...

"Tokyo Tribe, never ever die!" Oh my goodness, this movie is totally insane, wacky, absurd and terrible in every way, but so so so awesome. Do you remember those kind of crazy cult films you'd find in the back of a video store, only one copy on VHS, that you'd lose your shit over discovering and would have to tell your friends about and the next thing you'd know the entire high school would be into this crazy film. Sion Sono's Tokyo Tribe is one of those films, the kind that is really bad in every way, but also insanely awesome in every way. Love it, hate it, it's a can't-believe-this-is-real experience that feels a bit like The Warriors meets You Got Served, even though it's really unlike anything else. Holy sh*t I love this movie, even as bad as it is. So what the hell is Tokyo Tribe...

The Giver
Directed by: Philip Noyce
Cast: Brenton Thwaites, Odeya Rush, Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgaard, Katie Holmes
Running Time: 1 hr 34 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: August 15, 2014
Plot: A young man (Thwaites) living in a black-and-white future is shown colors by a piano-playing sage named The Giver (Bridges).
Who’S It For? Like your dystopias young and broody? Sure you do.
Overall
The proverbial ship, its path pushed by the passage of time, filled with passengers fighting for a seat during such a voyage, has sailed. In terms of The Giver, the old wooden vessel in this brilliant metaphor is the tale of the young chosen one rebelling against a messed up future, as one may call it. Though its source novel was written long before the films like The Hunger Games, Divergent, or even The Lego Movie, The Giver remains in the young adult sci-fi dystopic shadows of...

It's true: Malcolm David Kelly, who once played the illusive Walt on Lost and the ill-fated Lil Saint from You Got Served, is now one half of Mkto. Tony Oller ("To") is the other half, and together they've got a song you might have already heard on the radio. "Classic" is insanely catchy, the type of song deserving of the Song of Summer title. What's it like having the power to infect the world with an earworm? We asked the boys of Mkto:I know “Classic” actually came out last summer, and you guys have been touring with it for a while. Does it feel like it’s gotten too old to perform? Are you over it yet? Malcolm: No, you never really get that feeling. Sometimes it feels like we’re performing it a lot, but it’s actually a good time. Every time we perform it and everybody is singing along,...

He debuted with dance in the likes of You Got Served and the Fame remake, but Kevin Tancharoen moved to more violent subject matters with the Mortal Kombat digital series. It appears he’s still in a deadly mood, because he’s signed to direct a bullet-filled version of A Christmas Carol called The Guns Of Christmas Past.Andrew Hilton’s script is loosely inspired by Charles Dickens’ spook-some festive morality classic, but it flies off in very different directions. The plot finds a retired hit man – who, if you know anything about retired hit men in cinema, is not in for an easy time of it – returns home to Chicago on Christmas Eve to celebrate with family. No, wait… He’s there to avenge the death of a friend. Told you it wouldn’t go well.As part of his vengeful quest, he has to fight his way through...

Is it sad that I look forward to defeating my first monster, only so I can utter the words, "You Got Served!" I know, I know, the movie was terrible, but I will hold on to that phrase for dear life. Regardless of my bad lingo, what's not bad is the ridiculous and over the top nature of Battle Princess of Arcadia's hack and slash combat. The game also scratches that "gimme that loot!" itch, and includes a robust upgrade and enhancement system to boot. You can swap your various party members in and out during battles, which are separated into three categories. Regular battles classify as combat, and have you and 2 others of your team taking on the enemy. Skirmishes are team vs. team, and sieges feature your entire team against ancient enemies, akin to huge boss characters.
It reminds me very much of the multi-tiered system that I loved from the Suikoden series,...

For the last ten years, Harry Shum Jr. has shown his gifts for acting, singing, and most extraordinarily, dance, starring in such films as You Got Served, Stomp The Yard, and Step Up 2 & 3, and moving on to his most famous role, as “Other Asian” Mike Chang on Glee.
Unfortunately, he was always underutilized during his time with the show, but still managed to stand out. He still makes occasional appearances, but has moved on to more film roles (he played Booboo Stewart‘s gay brother in White Frog), and shows us reminders of his incredible dancing ability.
Today is his 32nd birthday, so let’s pay tribute to one of our favorite triple threats.

Battle of the Year, which opens in theaters today, is, technically, a dance movie: It involves a scrappy group determined to win back the gold in the Olympics of Breakdancing for America’s first time in fifteen years (we invented breakdancing, and now Korea has the trophy? Not on Chris Brown’s watch! U-s-a! U-s-a!). But it doesn't really deliver what fans of the genre really want in a dance movie. Where is the love story, preferably about a girl who pines to dance, is partnered with a hunky bad boy, and overcomes the obstacles of her disapproving parents/weak skills/jealous romantic rival in order to win the contest/her parents’ approval/street cred? This is the formula that has worked for so many other dance films, from Dirty Dancing to Step Up, Stomp the Yard to You Got Served (in the latter two, switch the gender of the...

The month of September typically serves as a transition period between the big-budget blockbusters of the Summer and the high-minded prestige fare of the Fall. As a result, September releases tend to be fairly modest, and September is consistently the lowest-grossing month of the year at the domestic box office. Even with appealing sequels Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and Insidious Chapter 2, this upcoming month will be no different. Without much help from Summer holdovers, it's unlikely that September 2013 tops September 2011's $603.5 million monthly record.September 6The only major nationwide release on the first weekend of September is Riddick, which marks the third time that Vin Diesel has portrayed the titular character. A year before Diesel starred in The Fast and the Furious, he appeared as Riddick in Pitch Black, which earned $39.2 million on its way to becoming something of a cult classic. In 2004, he was back in The Chronicles of Riddick,...

Raz-b has been on life support since August 16 after being brutally attacked in a China nightclub. As he clings to life, here are some things you Must know about this talented singer.
Right now you may only know Raz-b as the R&B singer who fell into a coma after getting viciously smashed in the face with a bottle while trying to break up a fight in a China nightclub, but he is so much more than that.
Raz-b: Five Things To Know About Him
1. He’s An Iconic R&B Star
Raz-b — with the help of a few bandmates — revived R&B music in the early 2000s with the group B2K. Along with Omarion, Lil’ Fizz, and J-Boog, Raz-b and B2K had an unstoppable run with massive hits like “Bump Bump Bump” and “What A Girl Wants.” They were basically Generation X’s Boyz II Men!

We recently noted how Above Average is attempting to flip the YouTube Original Channel script by utilizing the star power of SNL performers, but one of the channel's most recent videos features celebrities of a different kind. Broadway Video's YouTube comedy feed is the home of 'Finish What We Started', an 80s-inspired music video featuring contributions from Miles Fisher, Lance Bass, Joe Jonas, and a bunch of funny people. The video accompanies a song by Fisher, who has previous crafted retro music videos based around 90s sitcoms and cult classic films. This time around, he goes even more old school, setting 'Finish What We Started' at an 80s-themed party where three men go through a training montage in order to get revenge on three other men who previous owned them on the dance floor. It's You Got Served, but with more camp. One of the three leads is played by Lance Bass,...

If you've ever wondered how "Star Trek: The Next Generation's" Commander Riker sits in a chair, you now have an answer: like a boss.
Even if you're a devoted "Star Trek" fan, you may never have noticed how Riker (Jonathan Frakes) takes charge of certain sitting situations. He can't show those big chairs on the Enterprise bridge who's boss -- they're just too large -- but when it comes to Ten Foward (the ship's lounge), meetings in Captain Picard's (Patrick Stewart) office or conference room situations, Riker pulls up a leg and just swings it over those dinky, futuristic chairs, as if he's some intergalactic cowboy at an Old West saloon.
Maybe it was all part of the Riker method of warning alien evildoers of his manly virility. Maybe as a tall man, Frakes just looked silly sitting in those Starfleet chairs the normal way. Maybe it just added...

Stars: Kristen Quintrall, Denyce Lawton, Christopher Jones, JoJo Wright, Rachel Sterling, Black Thomas, Dustin Harnish, Cameron Diskin, Braxton Davis | Directed by Chris Stokes
Music producer-turned-film director Chris Stokes (You Got Served) turns his hands to horror with The Helpers. And whilst his early work featured a number of rappers and singers he has produced and worked with, this is his first movie Not to follow that format. This time round Stokes takes a bunch of relative unknowns (the majority of whom are credited with small roles in TV fare) and casts them in a movie that blends traditional filmmaking with that most risible of genres – the found-footage film.

Earlier this week, the New York Times published a scathing review of Guy Fieri’s new Times Square restaurant that has resonated through Flavor Town and beyond. The piece — penned by restaurant critic Pete Wells — took aim at everything from fishy-tasting marshmallows to a drink that “tastes like some combination of radiator fluid and formaldehyde,” reserving some special scorn for Fieri’s own divisive personality: “When you cruise around the country for your show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, rasping out slangy odes to the unfancy places where Americans like to get down and greasy, do you really mean it?” Wells asked.

Box office report: 'Taken 2' scores explosive $50 million debut; 'Frankenweenie' (un)dead on arrival
Liam Neeson has had an indisputably amazing year.
Though the quality of the actor’s movies remains up for debate (We’re looking at you, Battleship. Well, you too, Wrath of the Titans. Oh gosh, The Grey as well. And, as much as I hate to say it, perhaps even The Dark Knight Rises… don’t stone me!), the fact that the 60-year-old Neeson is at the peak of his career, recognized as an almost mythic Chuck Norris-esque figure and opening a new action tentpole every couple of months, is nothing short of remarkable.
And now Neeson has another chart-topper to add to his already impressive resume: Taken 2, which debuted to an astounding $50 million from 3,661 theaters this weekend, good for a sizzling $13,657 per theater average. Taken 2′s debut is the third best ever in the month of October, behind 2011′s Paranormal Activity 3, which started with $52.6 million, and 2010′s Jackass 3D, which started with $50.4 million.
The revenge sequel also earned more than twice as much as the original Taken did in its opening weekend — that film surprised Hollywood when it bowed with $24.7 million in 2009, and it also served as the catalyst for Neeson’s career jumpstart. Thanks to great word-of-mouth, Taken chugged all the way to $145 million total.
