A shamelessly gratuitous shock-fest
lysander-51928 October 2004
After Red Room 1, the director clearly thought that he hadn't repulsed enough people or gone over the line enough. There were still boundaries to be tampered with and unchartered taboos to explore.

Cue Red Room 2, a rather sick experiment in just how far cinema can go before losing all of its artistic merit and becoming purely an experiment in how thoroughly we can sicken ourselves. Unfortunately all our 'loved' characters bar one from the last installment are next to dead, so we're now presented with four fresh hopefuls.

The drill is exactly the same as the last film - four contenders sit in a room and draw cards. The outcome of the draws decides who will receive a certain 'punishment' as part of the game, who will administer it, who will just watch, and who will decide what it is. The one left alive at the end of all the rounds wins the game. The punishments themselves are all the more intense and immoral than in Red Room 1, involving toothbrushes, hammers, a bowl of vomit [which looks too much like porridge] and one particular scene involving a pregnant girl which is totally over the mark.

The only problem with this film is that it tries so hard to shock its audience that it's very easy to see it for exactly what it is, an exercise in violence and bad taste, so labeling it as 'horror' is giving it too much credit. As well as this, the budget is so obviously low and the effects so unconvincing that we are more sickened by the concepts of the actions taking place than by their physical representations, which at times are laughably fake. Still, the only reason anyone would watch this film is out of some form of twisted curiosity. It nevertheless succeeds in what it sets out to do - to thoughtlessly repulse and to sicken - making it a totally shallow and merit less piece of filming, although it doesn't pretend to be anything else.

More "Extreme" Weirdness From Japanese Sicko - Daisuke Yamanouchi
EVOL66627 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
RED ROOM 2 is pretty much the exact same thing as the first one, except the torture scenes are a bit different, and there's an android instead of a hermaphrodite/tranny...

4 people in a room - "crown" card wins, 2 of the other 3 lose. And when you lose this card game, ya lose more than your shirt...I don't have any explanation for anymore of the "plot" as my copy is in Japanese with no subs/dubs...

The scenes in RED ROOM 2 are a little more protracted and "nasty" than part 1 - the nose-scrub is pretty rough, the fisting-to-forced-abortion is decent, and the bowl-o'-puke drinking is absolutely repulsive - but whereas the first RED ROOM installment was almost "believable" (using that term loosely...) Part 2 goes way off the wall with the inclusion of a cyborg as one of the contestants, and the umbilical-cord-choking scene is a little far-fetched too. Even though some of the gore scenes were a little rougher, I gotta honestly say that I felt the first one had a little more "punch". If you dig this sorta strange/sick thing - check out Yamanouchi's far superior MUZAN E, or for more goofy/nasty gore his GIRL HELL and SISTERS OF BLOOD are worth checking out, too. Avoid KYOKO VS. YUKI unless you're a hard-core fan of his stuff. 6.5/10 for RED ROOM 2

Four sicko's play a game of cards. The winner tortures the loser in a cage.
ChrisSevered18 March 2005
Warning: Spoilers
RED ROOM 2 opens with a guy whacking off. A girl sits on the floor in front of him and performs mock fellatio on a light bulb. They are inside a prison-like cage while others view from the opposite side. A woman counts down, with a stopwatch as the man blows his load over the light-bulb-licker's face.

Each person gets their chance to speak to the camera individually while under a red spotlight. The subtitles of Unearthed Films upcoming DVD release will definitely be welcomed. With English as my native tongue I can only speculate the dialog and plot line.

This group (of four people) all draws cards, which presumably tell each of them the action they have to perform next. Presumably the person in charge is the distorted voice-over we hear instructing information to the four. They have a plastic bin at their disposal that contains objects such as the light bulb, and a toothbrush. These items are to be used in some perverse or violent way.

The next routine happens with the original female who previously used the light bulb, and another male participant. This time the toothbrush is used to inflict pain. The man is strapped to a chair and the woman inserts the baby-blue-brush into his nasal passage. With force, she brushes as blood spills out. Helpless, the man takes the punishment.

The film continues with these various scenarios of the grotesque including chuck drinking, strangulation, and one of the most recognized in the film containing a fisting gone awry. A man starts out pleasuring a woman with his hand. This scene progresses with the insertion of the man's hand (the penetration is off camera). He completes the act by ripping an unborn fetus from her insides. This isn't as 'shocking' as it sounds. The scene at the beginning of Troma's TERROR FIRMER of a fetus removal has the same disturbing merit that this does. For an effectively extreme example of this act, check out the film SUBCONSCIOUS CRUELTY.

The casual viewer will find this film twisted and intense. Others with a sickness for extreme horror will probably enjoy this, but don't expect to be overwhelmed with repulsion. The majority of the film relies on perversion to avert the viewer, rather than gore or extreme violence. Any viewers of the GUINEA PIG series, PSYCHO: THE SNUFF REELS, or any Seppuku films may find this to be a good companion to any of those, but it won't surpass them.

I haven't checked out the original RED ROOM film, since I've heard it's more boring than this sequel. A large portion of the film is dialog between the participants, and with the lack of subtitles, creates a lack of interest. If Unearthed Films releases a double DVD of the two it will definitely be worth checking out. I for one will be interested in knowing more about the storyline, even if the film isn't as extreme as I'd anticipated.

Piece of trash
RMS19499 September 2008
How anyone tries to justify the enjoyment in watching a film like this is beyond my realm of comprehension.

It's just an exercise in showing how much visual degradation it takes to make a video for the depraved. It's not a horror movie,, it's not even a thriller . There is no fun to be had here, only senseless acts thrown together.

The only reason I saw it was that I ran across this bit of dribble at a horror-movie website . It just gives horror movies a bad name.

While the producers have every right to film such a piece of crap ( I oppose censorship).., I have every right to call it what it is.. degrading trash. And I'm so glad I'm in the majority of those who feel the same.

what the F***

After the disappointment of part 1 it was time to correct the failures made. Indeed, there is more blood involved than the first part and it even gets a bit weird by pulling out a fetus from the womb while fisting a girl. Yes, you read it right, gore galore but but, there is something really wrong with it. There is of course some nudity involved but again, Eastern culture knowing it is forbidden to show private parts so we only see a man cum on a girls face and we see some suggesting that a man is putting his fingers and later his fist into a girls vagina with the well known result. So far so good. The movie clocks in 13 minutes longer than part 1, but it's more blah blah so they could have cut it there. But the let down is the part when we get to know who one of the girls really is. Sadly that isn't really realistic. To conclude, rougher than part one put a stupid plot.

Red Room 2 - well worth a look inside...
karlykins196720 September 2008
Four people introduce themselves to camera then participate in a game-to-the-death for a large sum of prize money. It all takes place in a couple of small rooms (one of which is Red!) and there is much dialogue and characterisation over action. The entire effort is short and none-too-subtle, but well played with conviction by all involved. Obviously it would seem that budget was limited on "Red Room 2", so some of the effects do look a little low-tech, shall we say (if you watch, you'll know just when I mean!) That being said, my attention was held completely from start to finish and felt that ultimately the film was well worth the time spent watching (and now writing about it!) One thing I should mention, by way of explanation to some of the levels of gratuity contained in "Red Room 2", is that recently I subjected myself to possibly the ultimate in gratuitous shock-fest "cinema", having watched something called "August Underground's Mordum" (which I wholeheartedly do NOT recommend). I mention this in order to explain that after having watched (or perhaps words like "suffered", or "endured" may be more appropriate) the aforementioned effort, absolutely anything that can (and was) presented in "Red Room 2" seemed really rather laughable by comparison. The difference in the two films being that "Red Room 2" was a well -made, -scripted and -acted work of (admittedly bizarre) entertainment; whilst "AUM" was just utterly repugnant imagery for the sake of it, without merit and void of value. Yes, "Red Room 2" is indeed gratuitous, as described in an earlier posting here, but after one's initial revulsion at the scenarios the contestants herein find themselves, it actually becomes strangely engrossing. It also helps that being a relatively low-budget production in appearance (which can be a good thing, in my humble opinion), the viewer's repulsion obtained by any of the film's shock "effects" is soon replaced by mild amusement - well it was with me! All of that being said, I found the film very engrossing and well worth the effort. You could see what the makers were trying to express, and yes, it is something a frequent film-goer will have seen before - namely just what are the extremes TV programmers will go to in order to obtain a rating, and simultaneously, just what level of degradation will any participants stoop to in order to win. Also, it all begs the query of the viewer - how much depravity and humiliation will you watch in the name of entertainment? Again, not subject matter we haven't seen presented previously, especially in the super-dark humorous style of "Series 7: Contenders" (highly recommended, by the way), but nonetheless interesting and engrossing (if you can forgive the cheapish effects!) Now, if only Endemol or Channel 4 could get the layabouts in the Big Brother house to indulge in this form of extreme gamery, then at least that programme wouldn't be so devoid of any value, and the wanna-be housemates would know what it's like to really EARN their prize!! THAT - I would watch... meanwhile, give "Red Room 2" a spin!

Absolutely nasty and extreme Japanese shocker.
HumanoidOfFlesh12 November 2004
"Red Room 2" is a continuation of the same theme from "Red Room" albeit with new players.Again there are some truly twisted scenes of sadism, gore and sexual violence for example a guy gets his nasal passages scrubbed with a toothbrush for minutes on end until blood erupts everywhere or in a truly repulsive scene a guy who is fisting one of the females in the cage feels something inside her.He grabs hold and pulls with all his strength, wrenching a three inch long fetus and yards of umbilical chord! So if you liked "Red Room" you won't be disappointed with this piece of nihilism.I still think that Daisuke Yamanouchi's "Mu Zan E" is a much better film.Give it a look as well.

brilliant d-movie - black humor galore - surreal as can be
therefdotcom2 February 2008
i have just seen this movie and it was hilarious! i was kinda scared to watch it as i have read so much about it in advance, but this thing is not scary or disturbing AT ALL. there are a lot of drastic and disgusting IDEAS that this movie is based on and if someone would read the actual script or a short novel based on this script it would be disturbing as hell.

the thing that turns this film from a Japanese shock movie is the lack of budget combined with really terrible sound and special FX. i don't know what intention the director had with this movie, but it is for sure not scary or shocking. there is no second while watching that you forget that this is all "just a movie". none of the fx are believable and the over-the-top sound FX turn this into pure dark humor. intentionally or not.

the basic idea of the story when put into the right hands with the right budget and writers would make one hell of a scary movie. give this thing to the crew of "saw 1" and you would fear for your life while watching this at your local cinema.

as much as the final result made me laugh at some points, apart from the brilliant basic ideas, there are some events happening that you just won't believe happening. as ridiculous as those were and as much as i chuckled about them they were surprising as hell and there would not have been any chance in the world that anybody could have predicted them.

there are some things that are so ridiculous that you can only describe them as surreal. i have seen directors try to get away with really really unbelievable stuff, but this tops it all. this is so ridiculous that it becomes brilliant.

confused? watch it. i can't describe it any better. i don't think anybody can.
