Touching and Funny
casidhe_meriwether30 September 2004
Ocean Front Property was a wonderful first movie for Joe Scott. It is touching and funny, making the film a treat to see. It was well acted and Joe added a great soundtrack.

If this film is any indication, it looks like Joe Scott will have a successful career ahead of him. He wrote, directed, produced, starred in and edited Ocean Front Property - all within a very limited budget.

I was lucky enough to get into the first sold-out screening of Ocean Front Property when it played in Dallas. Hopefully we will see it released nationally. I can't wait to see Joe's next movie. If it's anything like Ocean Front Property, I know I'll love it.

Good work Mr. Scott.

Wonderful story

I was at the Magnolia Film Festival when I saw this film, and I must say within the first 5 minutes I loved it. Joe Scott does a wonderful job with its story line and holds it very true and in-depth with real life.

Having just come out of a relationship very close to that of the main character, I related well to the emotions of this film. There were events in the movie that I found myself going through in a lot of those same situations. Seeing this film actually helped me close those last loose ends I had left in my life.

I hope and cant wait to see more work like this from Joe Scott. I hope that very soon we see his work on the big screen. I know I will be one of the first in line for it.

Good first movie for Joe Scott

I really liked this movie. The acting wasn't flawless, at times it was a little wooden and rehearsed, but some of it was also very funny, touching and true. Sometimes maybe the characters said things that most people would only think and not say out loud, but at least the emotions were realistic for someone in those situations.

It sounds cliché' and you can believe it or not but I laughed out loud and cried real tears while watching this movie because I could imagine myself in the situation the main character was in. So to me, that made it a great movie.

I am not a friend or family of Joe Scott. I heard about this movie because I'm a fan of the Glengarry Bhoys, who had a lot of the music in the movie. I bought two copies because Joe was donating all his profits to victims of the hurricane in Texas, which was very admirable.

Joe Scott's Ocean Front Property
c-ripley6 April 2005
I really found this movie to be a great effort from a first time director. I enjoyed it more than a large amount of the movies I see put out by the major studios, where creativity and humor seem to have died and been put out with the trash. Scott's efforts here, with a non-existent budget, were excellent and the final result is good, enjoyable to watch film. The soundtrack was also excellent.

I really feel like you walk away from this film wishing they had just a little more money behind the project so that you could see what Scott could really have done then. Great movie by a new director. Can't wait to see what he comes up with next.

Terrific first movie
patrickmoore41612 February 2004
I saw the first screening of this film in Dallas, and was impressed by the quality of writing and the creative, and very effective, way that Director (and writer, and producer, and acting lead, and I don't know what else) Joe Scott used limited resources to tell a story that is by turns funny, poignant, and instructive.

All the roles are well-acted and the story moves along briskly. The growth in understanding among the characters is much better handled than in many big budget films where the protagonist simply makes a miraculous, black-box conversion from clodhood to sensitivity.

I hope Scott has the opportunity to create more work. I'll be in line at the box office.

A movie about relationships that anyone can identify with
segue200015 April 2005
Who has never been the "dumpee" (or the "dumpor") in a relationship? Haven't we all experienced that particular pain to some degree? It's devastating and can lead to all sorts of problems in life, if you let it. In Ocean Front Property, protagonist Rick is the prototype for those who hold that getting drunk and staying that way is a viable option to grieving.

How else can you deal with a world where everything reminds you of the loss you have suffered? Escaping to a beautiful beach for a week with a couple of friends might seem like the perfect antidote to the depression that follows being dumped. Until the "x" shows up with your "replacement".

Having to face the "x", confront your feelings and get past them is ripe ground for exploration and Joe Scott makes good use of that here. Watching these five "friends" work out the kinks in their lives is entertaining as well as thought provoking.

I liked this movie very much. It was far better than the usual box office-driven fare. Here the characters and situations are well crafted, compelling, funny and true to life. I wanted to get to know these people better, maybe even hang out with them...(Although I was there age several years ago, so that probably wouldn't work out too well.)

Anyone who has ever been dumped can identify with this film

Warning: Spoilers
I saw this film at the DVExpo West film festival and was very impressed. It was the best of the lot by far in my opinion.

It is rare these days to find a movie that I can relate to. So many have degrading plot lines, over the top special effects, gratuitous sex or "hip" kids doing lines of coke and other ugly behavior.

This film from Joe Scott is nothing like that. Instead of grit and grime he gives us seven charming characters, funny yet very real situations, great dialog, beautiful visuals -- it seems to have it all. The characters feel like friends I would like to visit again. And it touches on universal truths with a light touch and great humor.

Sometimes a low budget works to benefit the production and that is evident here. The simplicity of the single location serves to heighten the focus on the characters and the story.

Ordinarily I would be suspicious of any vehicle that one person wrote, directed, produced... and starred in, for gosh sakes. But this looks more like a labor of love than an exercise in ego. Perhaps because it expresses the sensations of emptiness experienced in love lost dictates a singular vision. And Scott did a terrific job in each and every hat worn.

He even manages to overcome the injured male perspective of the lead character's point of view and depict the female characters with empathy. Given that perspective, this was no easy task.

Only once did I sense anything remotely derivative; there is a premise about Valerie changing her opinions to reflect those of her latest beau - that is similar to one I recall from the Runnaway Bride. Otherwise I would say this film is very original. I think it compares favorably with other films I've enjoyed including My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Annie Hall, and The Graduate, although it is quite different from any of these.

I also loved the musical score, which underlines the story and evokes a sense of yearning in the lead character that conveys much of the sweetness of the story. I would buy a CD if it were available.

Trumped up Reviews

I am very sure that the majority of these reviews are from friends and family of Joe Scott. I saw this film at the Movie Tavern in Denton and I actually had to pay five dollars to see this. It was a very nice effort, but let's all be reasonable. Anything above a 5 rating is being way too generous. At the end of the screening, Mr. Scott had mentioned to the audience that they should post comments on IMDb, because industry professionals look at it. So I am almost positive that some of these glowing reviews came from Scott's circle. It wasn't awful, but it just wasn't that great. The film had several major setbacks, the first one being that it wasn't interesting. Sure there was crying and a small bit of yelling. But even the crying and yelling couldn't salvage this decent effort of comedy and drama. It was as if the director paid no attention whatsoever to acting and performance. The lines were wooden and hollow with nothing to engage the audience. I wish I were a close personal friend of Mr. Scott's, so that maybe I could have overlooked this major flaw. And maybe I would feel vindicated in spending money to watch this over-glorified student film.

Am I the only one?

What movie did the rest of you see?

I don't know, maybe someone did some extensive work on this since I saw it last year. If so, please let me know.

No audio work was done and there were so many other problems with the film it's impossible to fit them all in here. Be honest, how many of these other voters are friends, family, and/or crew? Come on, admit it... I'll give Mr. Scott credit, he gave it his best shot on his first feature film, but seriously, folks, a 9.5??? Eryn Brooke is the only bright spot of this film, but even she couldn't save this movie. I don't care if she is somehow able to knock a full grown man off his feet with only a beach ball.
