“The Bear” cooked up a storm for its freshman season at the Emmy Awards, gaining a total of 13 nominations across the board with bids in acting, writing, directing, editing, casting, sound and of course Best Comedy Series. Having debuted way early in the Emmy eligibility period, it has sustained its buzz throughout the year with various award wins at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild, Writers Guild of America and Producers Guild of America. Included as part of their showcase is Oliver Platt for Best Comedy Guest Actor for his performance as Jimmy “Cicero” Kalinowski, his fifth nomination overall. Can he finally win an Emmy?
This is Platt’s first Emmy bid in a comedy category, having previously been mentioned for three dramas: “The West Wing” in 2001 and “Nip/Tuck” in 2008 for Best Drama Guest Actor, and “Huff” from 2005-2006 for Best Drama Supporting Actor. Other credits he has had in...

Premiering last summer, “The Bear” has become the most-watched comedy series in FX history. Season 1 amassed a total of 13 Emmy nominations, making it the third most-nominated comedy this year behind “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (14) and “Ted Lasso” (21). Included as part of their showcase is Jon Bernthal for Best Comedy Guest Actor for his performance as Michael “Mikey” Berzatto, his first Emmy bid after over 20 years working in the industry.
Like many actors, Bernthal’s first television appearance was in the “Law & Order” franchise on the spinoff “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” in 2002. After many appearances on a number of network dramas and sitcoms, he became known for his role as Shane Walsh in the first two seasons of “The Walking Dead,” and went on to work with such revered film directors as Martin Scorsese (“The Wolf of Wall Street”), Denis Villeneuve (“Sicario”) and Edgar Wright (“Baby Driver”). This story about Oliver Platt first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine. All actor interviews in that issue were conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike began.
This will be the first time at the Emmys for “The Bear” star Jeremy Allen White and for fellow nominees Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Jon Bernthal. But it’s old hat for Oliver Platt, who was nominated in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series category for his fan-favorite character Uncle Jimmy “Cicero” Kalinowski, the alternately menacing and menschy familial support for the Berzatto bunch. Platt was nominated for Emmys for “The West Wing,” “Huff” and “Nip/Tuck” but shockingly has never won despite being a staple in viewers’ primetime lives for decades.

In 2022, Nathan Lane became the sole record holder for most Best Comedy Guest Actor Emmy nominations (six) and then achieved his very first TV academy honor for his work on “Only Murders in the Building.” Having just earned another bid for the Hulu series, he could soon join six other two-time recipients of this award, including back-to-back champs Jay Thomas (“Murphy Brown”) and Mel Brooks (“Mad About You”). Although his chances are strong, he also faces the unique challenge of having to fend off a fellow former winner.
Seeking a bookend trophy of his own is “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” guest actor Luke Kirby, who was lauded for the same series in 2019. Lane is also involved in an immediate rematch with Sam Richardson (“Ted Lasso”) and faces fresh opposition from category newcomer Oliver Platt (“The Bear”) and Emmy first-timers Jon Bernthal (“The Bear”) and Pedro Pascal (“Saturday Night Live”).

Nine years after he won his fourth and final acting Emmy for playing Walter White on “Breaking Bad,” Bryan Cranston has a solid shot at triumphing in the corresponding Best Drama Guest Actor category for reprising the role on the prequel series “Better Call Saul” on AMC. In fact, he has three chances to win at least his fifth acting Emmy this year since he could also earn notices for Best Movie/Limited Actor for Paramount Plus’ “Jerry and Marge Go Large” and for Best Drama Actor for Showtime’s “Your Honor.” If all three nominations come to fruition, he will be only the fourth person and second man to ever compete for three acting Emmys at once.

Christina Ricci is arguably one of the most successful former child actors to have gotten their start in the 1990s, as she has maintained a consistent career since debuting in the film “Mermaids” at the age of 10. Having already played starring roles on the 2010s TV series “Pan Am” and “Z: The Beginning of Everything,” she is now a regular on Showtime’s “Yellowjackets.” Her portrayal of Misty Quigley, a middle-aged nurse who survived a plane crash as a teenager, has given her a popularity boost and could now earn her an Emmy for Best Drama Supporting Actress.

Two years ago Sandra Oh followed in Tyne Daly’s footsteps by becoming the second woman to be recognized three times each in the Best Drama Actress and Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy categories. She first racked up five supporting bids for ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” between 2005 and 2009 and then received a trio of consecutive lead nominations for BBC America’s “Killing Eve” from 2018 to 2020. Having bagged back-to-back Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmys for her turn as firecracker Ruth Langmore on “Ozark” in 2019 and 2020, Julia Garner is currently tied with seven other performers as the third most-nominated actors in the category. Should she now nab a third statuette for the Netflix drama’s fourth and final season, she would enter Emmy record territory by tying Ellen Corby (“The Waltons”) at three wins — though Nancy Marchand (“Lou Grant”) would remain the category’s all-time leader at four wins.
Here are the seven people with whom Garner is presently tied as the category’s third most-decorated actors at two wins:
1. Bonnie Bartlett: “St. Elsewhere” (1986-87)
2. Tyne Daly: “Christy” (1996) and “Judging Amy” (2003)

Fox’s upcoming musical drama Monarch will get some Tony-winning talent, as Broadway’s Faith Prince has been set to join the cast in a major recurring role. She will appear opposite stars Susan Sarandon, Anna Friel, Trace Adkins and Beth Ditto.
Created by Melissa London Hilfers, Monarch is described as a Texas-sized, multigenerational musical drama about America’s first family of country music, the Romans. The Romans are headed by the insanely talented, but tough as nails Queen of Country Music Dottie Cantrell Roman (Sarandon). Along with her beloved husband Albie (Adkins), Dottie has created a country music dynasty. But even though the Roman name is synonymous with authenticity, the very foundation of their success is a lie. And when their reign as country royalty is put in jeopardy, heir to the crown Nicolette “Nicky” Roman (Friel) will stop at nothing to protect her family’s legacy, while ensuring her own quest for stardom.

Earlier this spring, I had the privilege of moderating a panel with the always joyful cast of one of my favorite recent comedies, “Superstore.” But the timing was unfortunate: Just days beforehand, NBC had announced that the show was ending its run.
You would have excused the cast for not exactly being on cloud nine with the news. But they handled it like pros — and when I asked them to address the elephant in the room, they cleverly took out the network talking points and read, word-for-word, how they had been coached to explain the sudden decision to end the show. It was amusing in its awkwardness.
Much to my disappointment, “Superstore” didn’t land an Emmy nomination in what ended up being its final season. But this Emmy season is filled with many other examples of such discomfiture. And it starts with “Lovecraft Country.”

This may be hard for some of Liza Lapira’s fans to believe, but it’s been more than two decades since she made her first on-screen appearance. Although her career began with her taking several relatively small roles, it didn’t take long for her to start getting more screen time. Liza got her first big break in 2004 when she was cast in a TV series called Huff. From then, she continued to land substantial roles and it was clear that Liza was here to stay. For her portrayal of Ruth Langmore on Netflix’s “Ozark,” Julia Garner won her first Emmy last year, in Best Drama Supporting Actress. With “Ozark’s” third season having dropped on March 27, she is now in the hunt for the statuette once again and would be just the seventh back-to-back winner in this category and the first since 2014.
The six thespians who achieved this feat before her are Ellen Corby for “The Waltons” (1975-76), Nancy Marchand for “Lou Grant” (1980-82), Bonnie Bartlett for “St. Elsewhere” (1986-87), Allison Janney for “The West Wing” (2000-01), Blythe Danner for “Huff” (2005-06) and Anna Gunn for “Breaking Bad” (2013-14). Garner would be the first to net back-to-back statuettes in this category under the new voting system, established in 2015 — but can she pull it off?

Julia Garner (Netflix’s ‘Ozark’) just broke this 40-year Emmy trend in Best Drama Supporting Actress
Age may be just a number, but it affects one Emmy category in particular quite significantly over the past few decades. In order to win Best Drama Supporting Actress at the Emmys, there seems to be an unwritten age requirement of 30 or older, as we have seen over the past 40 years of the category’s history, with few exceptions like Katherine Heigl winning at 29 for “Grey’s Anatomy.” There were three actresses nominated this year who could have broken the trend as they were all in their early to mid-20s: Julia Garner, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams. Garner ended up prevailing Sunday night — see full list of winners.
SEEHere are the 14 Netflix shows that won Emmys in 2019: ‘Ozark,’ ‘When They See Us,’ ‘Black Mirror’ …
Garner is now the youngest to win Best Drama Supporting Actress since Kristy McNichol, who won for “Family” in 1979, two days before her 17th birthday.

Three of Anton Yelchin’s most beloved films will return to theaters this month in the run-up to the release of “Love, Antosha,” a documentary about the late actor’s many creative pursuits which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The theatrical retrospective will feature J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” (2009), Drake Doremus’ “Like Crazy” (2011), and Jeremy Saulnier’s “Green Room” (2015). The screenings are set to take place at New York’s Quad Cinema and Portland’s Regal Fox Tower Cinemas, with additional cites to be announced at a later date.
Directed by Garret Price, “Love, Antosha” features interviews with the actor’s parents, Irina and Viktor Yelchin, as well as many of his high-profile friends and collaborators. While his acting work is well known to many, Price highlights the lesser-known sides of Yelchin’s artistic process by exploring his photographic projects as well as scoring the film entirely with the actor’s original music.

Garret Price’s heartbreaking “Love, Antosha” features interviews with the actor’s parents, Irina and Viktor Yelchin, as well as many of his high-profile friends and collaborators. While his acting work is well known to many, Price highlights the lesser-known sides of Yelchin’s artistic process by exploring his photographic projects as well as scoring the film entirely with the actor’s original music. The newly released trailer also promises plenty of archival photos and video of the young actor, sure to move any fan to tears.
The official synopsis reads: “From a prolific career in film and television, Anton Yelchin left an indelible legacy as an actor. Through his journals and other writings, his photography,...

Last Year’s Winner: Thandie Newton, “Westworld”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: In the last 20 years, there have only been three repeat winners in this category: Anna Gunn for “Breaking Bad” (2013 – 2014), Blythe Danner for “Huff” (2005 – 2006), and Allison Janney for “The West Wing” (2000 – 2001). Nancy Marchand is the only actress to win Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in three consecutive years: between 1980 and 1982 for playing Margaret Pynchon in “Lou Grant.” She also won in 1978 for the same role, which is the most of any actor ever.
Fun Fact: 2018 wasn’t the only year the Emmys nominated seven actresses in the supporting actress category. In 1992, Valerie Mahaffey (“Northern Exposure”), Mary Alice (“I’ll Fly Away”), Barbara Barrie (“Law & Order”), Conchata Ferrell (“L.A. Law”), Cynthia Geary (“Northern Exposure”), Marg Helgenberger (“China Beach”), and Kay Lenz (“Reasonable Doubts”) were all up for the Emmy, and each performer represented a broadcast network. In 2018, none were.

Sandra Oh has become an awards magnet for her performance as British intelligence agent Eve Polastri in “Killing Eve.” Over the past few weeks she racked up wins at the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning over huge competition like Laura Linney (“Ozark”), Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) and Julia Roberts (“Homecoming”). Yet, one cannot help but notice a major award missing from that sweep: the Emmy. Oh remains unrewarded at the Emmys, even for her acclaimed work on “Grey’s Anatomy,” and she lost for the first season of “Killing Eve” this past September. With all those precursors under her belt, will Emmy voters finally reward her this September after six losses?

Ann Dowd finally received the recognition she long deserved last year when she won the Emmy for Best Drama Supporting Actress for her memorable performance as Aunt Lydia on Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.” For her second consecutive Emmy nomination she went with the Season 2 opener “June.”
The series picked up where it left off with the handmaids rounded up and forced to endure a fake hanging. Aunt Lydia then makes her grand appearance — if you’re a villain this is how you make an entrance! As she’s punishing the handmaids by making them hold rocks in the rain she learns that Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is pregnant. She demands the ladies join her in chanting, “Praise Be!”

Last year, Ann Dowd’s Emmy win for “The Handmaid’s Tale’s” first season was one of the biggest surprises of the evening as Thandie Newton (“Westworld”) seemed to be the frontrunner to win. Dowd was able to overcome vote splitting with her co-star Samira Wiley, but it remains unclear whether she will be able to overcome two of her co-stars this year. This time around, she is up against Millie Bobby Brown (“Stranger Things”), Alexis Bledel (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Lena Headey (“Game of Thrones”), Vanessa Kirby (“The Crown”), Yvonne Strahovski (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) and Newton.
If Dowd prevails, she’ll be the seventh in Best Drama Supporting Actress to win back-to-back Emmys, joining Ellen Corby, Nancy Marchand, Bonnie Bartlett, Allison Janney, Blythe Danner and Anna Gunn.

When Kristin Chenoweth won an Emmy in 2009 for the cancelled ABC comedy “Pushing Daisies,” she joked, “I’m unemployed now, so I’d like to be on ‘Mad Men'” (watch below). Chenoweth’s triumph was hardly the first time someone prevailed at the Emmys for a cancelled TV show, and that’s the one potential bright spot for “Roseanne” scene-stealers John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf following the show’s shocking cancellation. However, while Goodman and Metcalf are still in the running for Emmys, might the icky demise of “Roseanne” thanks to Roseanne Barr‘s racist tweets make the entire program toxic to voters?

During the 2000s, Blythe Danner was an Emmy Awards darling, earning six nominations, including two victories, over just four years. Now, after more than a decade-long Emmy absence, Danner is poised for a grand return, once again in Best Comedy Guest Actress for “Will & Grace.”
Danner’s portrayal of Will (Eric McCormack)’s mom Marilyn earned her nominations in both 2005 and 2006. The actress returned in the show’s recent season finale, “It’s a Family Affair.” Much to the chagrin of her son, she is invited by Grace (Debra Messing) to move into their apartment for an extended visit. Last Year’s Winner: Ann Dowd, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
Still Eligible: Yes.
Hot Streak: There hasn’t been a repeat winner in this category since Anna Gunn won in 2013 and 2014 for “Breaking Bad.” Before that, the last back-to-back winner was Blythe Danner for “Huff” in 2005 and 2006.

Audience Network’s latest scripted series “Mr. Mercedes” has jump-started the TV awards season by being the first Emmy Fyc mailer out of the gate. The complete first season was sent out the TV academy membership back on February 6 in an effort to reach voters who may not subscribe to the premium network. In addition to the mailer, Audience Network has also scheduled an Fyc screening and Q&A with select cast members in Los Angeles for Sunday, April 15.
Developed by Emmy fave David E. Kelley (“Big Little Lies,” “Ally McBeal”), “Mr. Mercedes” adapts Stephen King‘s crime novel for the small screen, with Brendan Gleeson playing retired detective Bill Hodges who’s out to find the man (relative newcomer Harry Treadaway) that killed 16 people with a stolen car. Jack Bender (“Lost”) directed most of the episodes and also serves as an executive producer along with Kelley, King, Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey.

This calendar year has been filled to the brim with unthinkables. The latest terribly sad happening: The talented Russian-American actor Anton Yelchin died yesterday in a freak accident at only 27 years of age. He was crushed by his own car on its steep driveway incline.
Yelchin was best known to general audiences as Chekov in the modern Star Trek franchise but to us he'll always be Byrd Huffstodt (the sensitive brainy teen in the underappreciated cable drama Huff) or awestruck poseur Ian (from the hipster vampire greatness that was Only Lovers Left Alive), and especially Jacob from the college romance drama Like Crazy (2011). Though Like Crazy was mostly heralded at the time for Felicity Jones's work as his British girlfriend, it was Yelchin that gave the movie its lovestruck foolish soul... but nuanced emotionally astute work by male actors, especially young ones, in romantic dramas are rarely given their just critical props.

Los Angeles – The loss of a up-and-coming actor at an early age is always a tragic event, and Anton Yelchin has been added to that roster. In a freak automobile accident at his home, Yelchin died on June 19th, 2016. He was best known for embracing the role of Pavel Chekov in the “Star Trek” film series reboot. He was 27 years old.
Yelchin came to Chicago in 2011 to promote his romantic drama “Like Crazy,” and his charismatic youth was confidently within his burgeoning career. At that point, at 22 years old, he had already done the “Star Trek” reboot and “Terminator: Salvation,” and was looking forward to roles in “The Beaver” and as a voice actor in the first “Smurfs” film. He was intelligent, and had a good-head-on-his-shoulders perspective regarding the sometimes crazy world of the film business.

Anton Yelchin passed away at the tragically young age of 27, at a time when many actors’ careers are just gathering momentum. But Yelchin had already amassed an impressive filmography that stretched back to his childhood, with an eclectic mixture of blockbusters, TV projects, and smaller efforts. “I’m just a huge supporter of this universe of filmmaking,” he told IndieWire in 2011. “It’s just fundamental. I can’t stress that enough.” Here, the IndieWire team shares their thoughts on why Yelchin stood out.
A Rare Screen Presence
Yelchin was the rare young actor to convey a plucky disposition while something gentler and melancholic lurked beneath the surface. As the energetic teen offspring of the troubled shrink on “Huff,” Yelchin was often the sole voice of reason in a sea of anxiety-riddled adults. While they grappled with middle-age, he was tasked with calling them on the pithy nature of their problems.

I've been a fan of Anton Yelchin ever since I first saw him star alongside Anthony Hopkins in the 2001 big screen adaptation of Hearts in Atlantis. When I saw him in that film I remember saying to myself that this kid was going to be a big star. I loved him in that film, and since then I followed his career pretty closely. Everything he's done since has been top notch work.
Earlier today I learned that Yelchin had died in some kind of freak car accident, and it was a devastating blow. He was only 27 years old! He had an incredible life and career ahead of him and learning of his passing kind of hit me hard. I only met him once on a bus at the Sundance Film Festival, but he was a very nice and gracious individual.

We're less than a week out from the Emmys, where we'll finally learn if Jon Hamm and Jane Krakowski will pick up their first statues.
