Like any softcore out there, it's only valid for the hot action
Rodrigo_Amaro13 March 2016
Erotic, sexy and seductive, the hot project of softcore "Lie With Me" is not a complete triumph because there's a flawed plot that fails to convince the more experienced viewer. As a drama, there's some in's and out's but it's mostly out; as a softcore, it's ten times better than many of its genre because a) the cast is deeply involved with their nudity/sex scenes, and they're good looking to boot; b) the sequences are hot, nicely shot and those are the moments worthy of view. Eric Balfour is insanely hot, does a lot of full-frontal scenes (huge debate on the boards about...nevermind) and the words I need to describe him with accuracy cannot be used here. However, a movie that seems filled with a purpose shouldn't depend exclusively on the sex, no matter how intense and awesome those scenes are. That's why the thumbs down to this.

Moving a little closer: Leila (Lauren Lee Smith) is a beautiful young woman with a relentless sex-drive going from one man to another in order to satisfy her sexual needs. It's all about being casual. One day, she meets the handsome David (Balfour) and things get very interesting. They both know what the other is all about, so they go forward with just one night stand that evolves to a few more days until it changes the whole game when...David falls for the girl. Back and forth between their involvement, we follow the lives those characters are leading, with David taking care of his sick father; and Leila's parents getting through a divorce - I think the film could go without those subplots, they're infinite sad.

Gently touching you: the movie is told by Leila's perspective with her thoughts about losing herself through sex and all the effect it has on her. And that's why the movie focus on her doubt to make a decision: sticking by David and finally finding something new or going back to the arms of strangers. With a better script, this part would be fantastic.

Now, I must push you away: The problem lies in the fact that it doesn't build anything deep that can actually provide that Leila and David are in fact, in love. They only had the basics with each other, what they knew the other could provide (sex) and somehow he's the one who cares so much about her without knowing her (but he tries!); and she's the one so scared about closeness, running away from him and later on going back to her hedonistic search for pleasure and not getting it anymore(the 'meltodwn masturbation' scene is real low and sad). To the writers (and most audiences, I'm afraid) this is a proof of love, building a relationship: a different touch, body to body and there you have it, love grows. I've seen this happen in life but it doesn't mean I truly trust it. Has to be more. Gotta be a little more cerebral, you have to know the inside behind the facade, the feelings, the vicissitudes of a person. Sex and intimacy is a big and wonderful step but it's just a step to several others; and sometimes you can even remove it from the equation and still have a meaningful love and understanding of the loved one.

It's nice on the eyes but it's so simplistic, slightly mushy and in desperate need of a good dialogue scene. Where are the bloody words? Though I don't fancy much analogies and stuff, but I have to use one here. "Lie With Me" is like that dreamy hot person you fool around for a night, you two have a great time doing fun stuff in bed and whatever the place but when it comes to talking and sharing other experiences that doesn't revolve around intercourse, it's a big fat meh. Not a complete waste of time but you may feel a little disappointed afterwards. 5/10

Interesting to watch but superficial
lippp17 February 2006
I liked the characters in this film and the actors playing them. But the truth is this film falls short in its effort to examine sex addiction vs. the complexity of love and relationships. I suppose it is easy to dismiss this work as a well produced soft porn flick. It seems to want to be much more. The problem is the characters are not all that well developed. We do not know what the two principal characters find in each other that will transcend their heavy breathing. They say they love each other eventually, but who knows why? Frankly I have know idea what the lead female character has to offer in terms of substance. At least the male character is seen reading Steppenwolf and not the cliff notes version, either. So I guess we can deduce he has depth and intelligence. The female lead, however, seems to work in photo developing shop as a clerk. Yet she has quite a varied wardrobe which she somehow is able to afford. That's about it in terms of her personality and depth. But they do have attractive bods and I must guiltily admit I enjoyed that. If the sex scenes were edited out, the theater would be empty half way through any screening!!!

Sex is not enough
mario_c24 April 2006
This movie disappointed me a bit, as I expected a lot more when I saw the trailer. We cannot say it's totally disinteresting, because I think the main idea is good and quite original, but the way this movie was done is far from being great. It's too slow and dialogues hardly exist. At some moments it turns out boring…

In my opinion it pretends to be a complex movie and tries to mess up with ours heads when it totally changes the feelings which are supposed to exist in a relationship between two people just by sex, but it didn't achieve that goal, because it's too superficial at some crucial moments and characters aren't themselves too deep. There isn't really a plot, but a sequence of scenes, most of them sex scenes! But just sex is not enough to keep a relationship or even to make a movie (except if it is a porno…), and sometimes this film seems to be just sex!

Beside that, the entire "story" is too centered in the main character. From the beginning it seems we are seeing a monologue, a "secret diary", where she tells us her intimacy, her desires, her obsession about sex and, most important of all, her incapacity to love! But her "secret diary" is not made from words…sex is the only way to communicate! Once again, it's not enough

All in all this was a really deep film.
yvettel292 March 2006
I was totally enthralled with this film from beginning, to end. There really isn't much dialogue in this film, but I believe that is what makes it that much more emotional, and sincere. This is true life, it feel totally real- the situations and the sex scenes, not at all like other wannabes. I haven't seen a film like this in a while. It was very refreshing. I won't lie, I'm a sucker for love stories, and this one just happen to be done really well. I recommend this film to those who want to see something different from all the weak love films out there. I've seen quite a few, and Iknow those who decide to watch this film will not be disappointed.

Lie Down and Sleep During This Film.
anaconda-406586 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Lie With Me (2005): Dir: Clement Virgo / Cast: Laura Lee Smith, Eric Balfour, Polly Shannon, Kate Lynch, Mayko Nguyen: You wouldn't think that a film populated with sex would be boring but that's exactly what Clement Virgo's efforts are here. It is a film about relationships within sex that starts out interesting before becoming a chore to sit through. Lauren Lee Smith plays a young woman addicted to sex. At home her parents are divorcing and she passes time by screwing everything that isn't bolted down. Structure is one act of sex after another but viewers feel no sense of emotion or care for these meat-heads. The subject matter isn't the issue here. Smith just isn't likable and the loser she links up with refers to her as a slut yet he bangs her while going with someone else. A relationship at the level operates plainly on her insecurity and his dominant nature that in turn, shelters his insecurities. No one in this peep show derives sympathy. Virgo simply spices things up with great location work, which doesn't say much for the sex. One would think that a film containing this much sexual interaction would be tempting but instead it is one long bore. Theme regards sexual addiction and there was potential for a decent film here but when you don't give a rat's ass about the characters then the only way one could lie with me during this film is if one could tolerate snoring. Score: 2 / 10

Oh. My. Lord.
slender_swimmer13 March 2006
Warning: Spoilers
So we see an erect penis.

And plenty of breasts, though usually the same two.

Over and over.

And over.

But there's no story. None. A woman wanders around, muttering to us via convenient voice-over (god help us), while she apparently falls in love with said penis, or perhaps the male it's attached to. Hard to say. Not worth saying. Not worth seeing. Even for free.

Oh, yes--read the director's mini-bio here on IMDb. Gee, I wonder who "Anonymous" might be.

Like Watching a Student Film
chefmoviebuff17 July 2006
Apparently the director forgot to graduate from film school. There wasn't a single redeeming quality about this film: choppy editing, amateurish photography and lighting, terrible music, flat performances, awful pacing. The only thing I found shocking about this film is how boring it was.

In my mind, if you intend on shocking your audience (which the director may or may not have intended), you need to establish some sort of a story with some sort of characters with some sort of motivations causing some sort of interest in the audience. Then, with explicit sexuality I may feel some form of tension. With this turkey, the only tension I felt was the resistance of a remote control button.

Is it just me, but when two people are talking in a club, aren't they usually screaming over music? Wait, there was no music playing in the club; all the people were just standing and dancing to nothing.

"Lie With Me" is easily the most boring movie I've seen this year. Next time I'll take the title more literally and take it to bed.

Couldn't take my eyes off this
one24716 June 2007
There I was, lying in bed, finished the end of The Tonight Show looking for something to watch. When I read the description of the movie showing Lauren Lee Smith - I automatically thought about Lara from The L Word. I always wanted to see more of her (other than The Last Kiss). She's so beautiful and delicate so it was very interesting see her play this role. The chemistry between her and Eric Balfour was hot and naughty, but also romantic. It seems to me that she really had to let her guard down to play this role and I thought she was superb. Also, I no longer see Eric Balfour as Milo from 24 anymore, he has a nice body and booty. I recommend this film for just about anyone who is tired of the same old boring and predictable love scenes. This move is far from the norm in the department.

An unsuccessful way of mixing porn and "art"
Lejla8320 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
There are too many wrong attempts to make the pornography look artistic. If you want to make a movie with only a few constraints, then there should be something that could turn the viewer on. It was sex with no real sex, and it can be noticed. When I watched the movie, I wasn't really enjoying it. Even though it lasted 90 minutes, it seemed to me that it lasted much longer. Similar scenes made it boring. It is not an erotic movie, it is not a porn, and it is definitely not an artistic movie, although the director tried to mix all of the three things. An unsuccessful attempt, I must say. The actors did not act that good. She failed in trying to look seductive and horny on the movie, and I had no impression that she was really f****d up. Finally, the happy-ending makes it look too mushy and it spoils everything that was made until then.

Surprisingly effective and haunting
angelhold30 June 2006
I was truly surprised by the emotional depth and haunting quality of this film, which could easily have felt merely cheap and tawdry because of the abundant nudity and almost explicit sex that dominates it. The excellence of the performances, however, acts as a counterbalance to the sexual titillation.

In acting this tale of the struggle between sheer lust and real love, both leads radiate a subtlety of emotion through facial expression and body posture that makes the largely non-conversational characters "speak" in articulated ways. The sparse voice-overs effectively assist the development of the relationship. In a society where wide sexual experimentation at early ages exposes many to the pitfalls this film explores, this is a strong statement about the human hunger for love and real relationship.

Meandering and Sexy.
rmax3048235 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Eric Balfour's charm eludes me but Lauren Lee Smith exudes heat. She's beautiful in a conventional way and has a habit of holding her face down a little so that she looks up from under her brows like some kind of predator before a charge. She narrates the film and the script is pretty explicit about intercourse and the foreplay and fifthplay that precedes it.

The problem with the story is that it doesn't really hang together well. Balfour takes her around and introduces her to sex, and she has a family and friends with difficulties. "Emmanuelle" was equally complex.

I'll just give two examples of what I mean. Smith picks up some half-frightened virginal guy at a cafe and takes him out in the backyard for a bit of carnal knowledge. She provides him with a condom and while they're getting after it she's telling herself, "Don't come. Don't come." Why not? And to whom is she referring -- her partner or herself? And, in either case, what's her motive? (There's a little nudity but no explicit sex, by the way.) Second illustration. Balfour has been giving her the eye and he leads her around coyly, knowing she's following him. They wind up in a children's playground, in one of those plastic tubes provided for kids to crawl through. He crawls into it and stops at the end. She stops at the opposite end and goes through these motions of pulling off her top and tickling herself where it counts. And Balfour lies there, watching and smiling, and caressing himself for a minute or two, then skips off and walks away without a word. What is this movie about? I guess it's about the relationships between people, especially those involving sex, but if so it's a pretty shallow snapshot. Since the point of view is that of the heroine, I presume this reflects feminine concerns the significance of which managed to slip by me. I don't mean to sound sexist. There have been gripping films made strictly from a woman's point of view -- I'll mention "Rebecca" in passing -- but this one meanders all over the place with no resolution.

It's possible that, limited by my own hard wiring, my heuristic apparatus had its shoelaces tied together in this instance. If so, my apologies. I notice quite a few good reviews elsewhere, so if I didn't get it -- and I didn't -- maybe it's my own fault.

Lie with Me is HOT
dustie12921 February 2005
I saw Lie with Me at another recent screening and I loved it. As a 30 something woman I felt that this movie really spoke to me. I got from it all the things I loved about Lost in Translation and the Sunset/Sunrise movies with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. Visually I think it is stunning, and the sex is really hot, but never gratuitous or porn-like. The supporting characters are strong as well and nicely developed in very economical scenes. The film never drags and there is not a single wasted frame. Eric Balfour smolders and I totally bought Lauren Lee Smith's journey of self-discovery. I highly recommend this film – Hope it gets released soon!

A Very Erotic and Pointless Romance
claudio_carvalho14 September 2012
In Toronto, the nymphomaniac Leila (Lauren Lee Smith) spends the nights dancing and having sex with men to satisfy her sex drive. Leila learns that her parents are divorcing and she is affected by their decision.

When Leila meets David (Eric Balfour), she has a torrid affair with him. David is an artist that lives with his father, who is very dependable on David. Leila and David have a complicated relationship since he is a possessive man that demands commitment but Leila does not know how to love a man and has the need of different partners in her sex life.

"Lie with Me" is a very erotic and pointless romance, with a flawed story but a charming lead couple. The writer and director Clément Virgo seems to be more interested in exploring the sex scenes with the sexy and gorgeous Lauren Lee Smith. Her face and look are very hot and she is bold in the erotic scenes. Unfortunately her character is not well developed and there is no explanation for her unstable behavior and feelings. My vote is six.

Title (Brazil): "Deite Comigo" ("Lay Down with Me")

there's no story here...just porn
jkw51213 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
romantic? emotionally deep? honest depiction of contemporary urban relationships? yikes...that's scary! this movie had absolutely no depth although it tried extremely hard to.

simply stated, it was really nothing more than soft porn. the main female character was a raging nymphomaniac. seriously, who masturbates that often? there was absolutely no depth to the relationship of the two main characters...it was purely sexual.

oh, and let's not forget abusive! the main male character was physically violent and controlling on several occasions...rape implied in one scene, choking/strangulation in another. since when does that constitute romance and emotional depth?!?

epic fail
hazenpepper221 June 2008
while i do appreciate the idea behind this movie( that is mainly - a young woman who uses sex in order to be able to disguise her feelings), the negatives of this movie far FAR outweigh its positives.

its somewhat of a popular phenomenon in these post-modern times, for producers to use sex as an art form. i can respect that, but instead of fitting sex into the "whole", this pretentious drivel is obsessed with showing needless flesh(to the point it actually becomes boring, to tell you the truth) instead of trying to tell a story, this is just a bunch of sex scenes with some half a**d-redundant female narrative slapped here and there so he could call this junk "art", which leads me to think its because he wanted to be either extremely "controvertial", or "uber liberal"(which is why i suspect the movie is popular amongst the female crowd mostly, and not for its artistic merits).

while the above mentioned reason is mainly why the film falls flat on its face, add to that the god-Awful acting(David looks as if he has been pulled of some late night skin flick where he butchers the art of acting on a regular basis)along with a ridiculously primitive pacing(yea, non linear plots can work, as David lynch hauntingly proved over and over again, but on "lie with me", its just laughable). and this movie is a complete and utter failure, unless maybe you couldn't find anything else on late night TV to jerk off to.

Makes lifetime movies good
kidjay832 August 2012
I just watched this movie and automatically the first thing that popped into my head was .Lifetime special ,this was horrible even from a lifetime perspective .The main actress isn't interesting her male co star isn't interesting either .At times i wonder what why he was even there. For anyone who sits there's and says this is about love and relationships .You need to get your head checked this is about sex plain and simple . i kind of got the feeling of this being a lazy effort to resemble last tango .Fail big time at least tango had actual talented actors .I guess in a way this movie suits the talent or lack there of.Nothing artistic at all about this the director needs a serious reality check. When are people like this going to be banned from trying to pass pornographic films off art ? its insulting

Running on empty
Carrot-428 September 2005
Lie with me is the story of a girl who likes sex, and a guy who also likes sex and all the empty emotions that flow around them... that's pretty much it.

I couldn't even say that the plot goes downwards since it doesn't go anywhere at all. There is about one thing happening in this film and it's sex; there is no intrigue, or none that's worth being intrigued by anyway, except for "will this ever end!".Very long moments could have been cut off the movie and, in the same way, some moments could have benefited from being longer. The main characters are empty, underdeveloped and we can't feel anything for them because they're too busy having sex and that, to me, is just not interesting. As for the secondary characters, they're not even developed at all, there are many of them and they could just as well have not been there; again, not enough of the good or interesting stuff and too much of the boring empty stuff.

Another problem this movie has is it's half-ass poetic narration, it feels as tough the girl tries to say something of importance but you soon realize that she's always saying the same thing, questioning herself about life, love... and she isn't that good an actress, she looked to me like a model turned actress more than an actress, like in a bad Antonioni film, actually this would pretty much resume what I think of this movie: a lousy Antonioni film with nothing but sex and bad actresses.

From what I've heard, it's been selected in many film festivals and I don't understand why. See it, write what you think because, well, I'm kinda lost...

Sexual titillation but little else
cflr6 August 2006
This movie had some titillating moments but was generally a waste of time. The male lead came across as a complete neanderthal which made it difficult to understand why the female lead was so obsessed with him. The two lead characters were not very likable which in and of itself doesn't make for a bad movie but there is little reason given in this film as to how they turned out this way or why we should care about what happens to them. The only moments in the film that provided any depth into either of the lead characters were when they were with their fathers. Unfortunately, those moments were far too few though. This movie was about the explicit sex more than anything else and that is not a formula for a compelling movie.

seen the story before .. but still a nice try
dumsumdumfai13 September 2005
Warning: Spoilers
based on a book on women sexuality, told from the main woman character's pov, being a male, I am not sure I get the story. Or being more specific, I am not sure I get the story that I have not seen in another movie before.

However, the film is well directed, fluid in camera work and continuity of scenes and character emotion expression.

*** possible spoilers ahead *** There are a few scenes did not quite rang true for me. scene 1 with the central female character in a house party with a black guy, and he is try to come on to her and she said he is crazy. Maybe the scene is trying to say she is try to get away, find a new party scene and missing her boyfriend because they had a fight. scene 2 with the main male character washing his dad. Even thought there is nudity, the male lead was not really washing his dad, who just went for a #2? This scene was not authentic.

The female lead did a good job, considering, her age, the script, especially well on the last few scenes.

The after Q&A revealed that the movie added the parents and left out the female character's promiscuity before the boyfriend. I think the parents situation gives a good background, and both can be implied from the voice over.

The sex scene is not out-of-context or overly exploitive, but I argue that imagination is much more powerful tool.

Die With Me Or Waste Time With Me Should Be The Name Of This Film
FilmMan4711 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
i have seen a lot of soft core films got a great collection at home but this fall flat it is spectacularly boring i say.

starting Lauren lee smith in lie with me 2005 plot:Leila have sex with random men she meets David & things goes as usual things don't work out between them.

i saw this film few days back as a regular user of IMDb & a reviewer i always lookout of new and old films.but when i saw the reviews & IMDb page of this film i raised my expectations & thats where i fell for it its a old film made in 2005 I've seen 80s soft core films they are gold compared to this this is pure rubbish & its promoted as a erotic film but there is no erotic scenes in this film except one on the bed & sofa,it was shot very badly all in dark with limited usage of light.

the director tried to present it as a art film but failed.it was released in a hurry i guess.a good example of bad filmmaking.

the dialogs & cast don't matter because everything just got ruined by the director, for those who are looking for hot scenes just by looking at the poster they will be disappointed.

my rating is 1/10 die with me or just waste time with me should be the name of this film..Skipp it at all cost not wort watching

Realistic and gritty
xredgarnetx13 December 2006
Canadian art-house flick LIE WITH ME tells the tale of a sexually frustrated woman who can't connect with her sexual partners. Meaning she has no feeling for them and has never achieved a major orgasm. Finally, she runs into a hunk at a favorite club, and not only connects with him and has a mind-blowing orgasm, she falls in love. The pair love, fight, break up, get back together, fight some more, and so on. The sex scenes are steamy and realistic, so beware. You wouldn't want to watch this with your mom. And your mom definitely won't want to watch it with you. The gal is not a bad actress, although way too skinny. The guy is a major hunk, dark and brooding, and almost every gal's dream of true love. Based on a book and probably shot on a dime, but hey, it sure beats a sequel to FRANKENFISH.

dreamy mood
SnoopyStyle15 February 2016
Nymphomaniac Leila (Lauren Lee Smith) goes to a party. She catches the attention of David (Eric Balfour) and Victoria (Polly Shannon). They watch her having sex with a stranger in the alley and start having sex themselves. Leila's mother leaves her father. Her friend Rachel (Kristin Lehman) is giving up great sex to marry someone she loves. David starts stalking her and their perverse sexual affair grows. David is taking care of his father and Victoria is jealous.

Firstly, this is not a late-night erotic B-movie. It's trying to be an artistic erotica with varying success. It has a hazy dreamy feel with soft colors and persistent narration from Leila. Leila is a compelling character for about 30 minutes before it grows tired. It becomes nothing more than two hot people having sex a lot. It's a lot of explicit nudity but the story moves way too slowly. Leila's deterioration could be much darker as well as the movie. This needs to be more than hot sex.

Honest, psychologically complex.
joejoe-620 September 2005
Lie With Me is 100% honest. The sex is over-hyped as being X-rated. The sex scenes are long, filmic and beautifully shot. The film is not really about sex, but about the psychological. The female lead enjoys sex and pleasure and shuts out love and intimacy until she meets the male lead who is very intimate and emotional. Not a scene is wasted. Supporting characters comment on relationships, loneliness, the body as something that is unsexy. The leads are physically beautiful, lovely to watch from a filmic sense, and give naked performances. There are people in everyday life like this and it's honest to see it up there on the big screen. A brilliant film.

Deep Craving
HRoss00718 November 2006
I saw this movie a week ago. It's not big-studio, big fanfare, big stars. For the genre it's in, it still has some powerfully credible inner searching, credible sex, kinky voyeurism, and believable emotional drama. Sub-plots include sensitive treatment of elderly parents that seems out of character at first, but develops a lot more depth to the main characters. The Sex and Nudity is beautifully filmed - sometimes playful, sometimes intense, only superficial when that's what the plot requires. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the acting, the plot, and those insights that give us 'redeeming social value'. The cast includes at least 4 stars who need to be seen again: Lauren Lee Smith, Eric Balfour, Polly Shannon, Kate Lynch. (Of the last two, I can't recall which was the 'Girlfriend' and which was the 'Cousin getting Married' -- but both were valuable supporting roles with excellent lines that deserved more quotes.)

Pointless
raulfaust23 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Dude, I thought this movie would have its sexy scenes and maybe have some nudity, but I was expecting a real romance.

What's up with this film? It's basically a story about a girl who breathes sex 24/7 and doesn't seem to have feelings for men as any other girl in the world has. I didn't get the point of the movie. If it was pornography, it was OK. Yes, just OK, not that good because there are plenty good porn movies over there. If it was romance, it failed very hard.

Also, I found lots of contradictions. If she loved him, why would she just abandon right after his father's death? If she loved him, why did she say she tried but wasn't able to? If she didn't love him, why did she make all that drama when he dumped her?

And why all that rudeness to the other guy when they were about to have sex? Was she a nymphomaniac? I really enjoy Canadian films, but this one....

edit: isn't that funny that all the users who have reviewed it as "extraordinary", "canadian's masterpiece", "magnificent", all have reviewed only this title and no more logged into their accounts?
