Wonderful, sensitive film
AishFan9 June 2005
After Phir Milenge comes another touching film that sheds light on one of India's most misunderstood problems, AIDS. It is a pity that in the 21st century, AIDS is still thought of as a homosexual disease. I was shocked to see that people think it is extremely contagious and that there are no effective laws to protect patients. I couldn't believe that they're literally treated like dogs. Throughout the movie, I kept on wondering how the protagonist contracted the disease. I realized afterwords that the cause isn't revealed for a reason. People always assume how an AIDS patient contracted HIV, and they have no right to assume the cause and accuse the person for it. They are human beings and have an equal right to life. This movie also sheds some light on the extremely misunderstood gay relationship. Juhi Chawla does a wonderful job as does Sanjay Suri. However, I liked Phir Milenge more. It is much more positive and upbeat. MBN is rather depressing.

Much Better than Phir Milenge.

MY BROTHER NIKHIL ***1/2 out of 4 Stars

Is it another Philadelphia? No. Another AIDS awareness movie? No. Another offbeat movie? No, I wouldn't call it that. A must watch? Yes.

Sanjay Suri plays a character called Nikhil who is a State swimming champ and has a loving sister played by Juhi Chawla. I love Juhi. She acts marvelously and also uses her presence as a refreshing treat for your eyes. Victor Banerjee and Lilette Dubey also shine in their roles and even Purab Kohli delivers. Sanjay Suri plays his character, as it should be. Very well made and this film also boasts off a wonderful screenplay which is the highlight of the film (apart from the performances).

Just the kind of AIDS movie we needed. But you can see some shades of Philadelphia which are ignorable because of the brilliance of the film. And there are some flaws which make you go ''Did they have the knowledge of all this in 1994?" which are again ignorable just like the ones in 'Black' but it has one thing in common with Black that it is one of the best films of the year. It is a tear-jerker but does not dwindle with this genre for long a la K3G. Despite its flaws, it was indeed a great film.

And to top it all, it has an amazing amazing song called 'Le Chalein' which is interwoven in the film and adds to quality of the film. Awesome song!

A story of a man who is life changed due to one incident in his life
k-verma19 April 2005
Warning: Spoilers
A story of a man whose life changed due to one incident. Nikhil- State champion of Goa beloved by his father seemed to have a perfect life until he was detected of AIDS. His whole life changed. He was shunned from society, his swimming team and by his own dad. Then comes the story of his life after that, how he has to battle the fight against society. Here comes Juhi Chawla, his sister who helps him the most. A well portrayed story, though a little slow many at times, does touch your heart. The main flaw in the script is that the writer has shown everything in the first scene ie they show that he is dead, leaving no suspense as one would already know the ending. On the whole a good movie, mainly for people who like watching slow and sentimental movies.

Warning: Spoilers
(Sob Sob Sob)

I was DYING to watch. So finally, I watched it last night. And I have never cried so much in a movie. In one word, I would have to say that this movie is BEAUTIFUL!

This movie is groundbreaking; this movie has a "realistic" look at a gay couple and handles the subject of Aids with sensitivity – which has never been in any Indian movies.

Story is simple, Nikhil is diagnosed with Aids and his parents disown him. He goes to his partner (soul mate), Nigel. He is treated like a criminal and is locked in a dirty room for months before the lawyer fights for his rights. He has the freedom to live freely and lead a normal life, like any other person. Now, he has no parents, no job, and no life. Only support he has is of his beautiful caring sister, Anu (Princess), Nigel (Boyfriend), and Sam (Brother In-law).

Story doesn't focus how or why Nikhil has Aids. Movie focuses how a family and society reacts to the decease. Nikhil is humiliated, once who used to be a star of the town and now he is an outcast. Movie has more of a documentary touch to it (meaning people speak to the camera about Nikhil).

We can all relate to this movie. This movies hits home because, we, once in life has had the perfect life but one day everything changes – everyone you loved is gone… This is how I related to the movie. Also, haven't we done something wrong once in our life, that have made are parents embarrassed or mad at us. Don't we all have our soul mates? Don't you have a brother or sister who would do anything for you?

Movie is about LIFE!

Movie shows courage, strength, and weakness in all characters. This movie is filled with beautiful moments ~ just to mention few:

1- When Nikhil's dad comes to meet him after 2 yrs, Nikhil asks for his dad to tell him, please tell me this is a nightmare and it'll pass.

2- When Anu comes with a rakhi to Nikhil and the words "agle rakhi mei tumsei .." – realizing that there might not be another Rakhi for her.

3- When Nikhil and Nigel have a fight and Nigel takes Nikhil to the beach…there are glimpses of the past Nikhil & Nigel hanging out at the beach, which shows a healthy Nikhil… but now, Nigel is holding on to Nikhil…Nikhil can highly walk or stand.

4-A mother says to her son, I wish you had died when you were born. 5-When Nikhil dies in Nigel's arms.

Sanjay Suri as Nikhil, shows his emotions flawlessly. Sanjay plays the role of a man who is gay and in the closet, a swimming champion, a guy who is so pressured by his dad, an artist, and a weak sad, strong, human being.

Juhi Chawla -She adds the smile in the movie. She oozes happiness and hope and courage in the entire screen she is present. She is one of my favorite actresses. She stands by her brother when no one is there for him.

Purab Kohli - I personally think, this movie belongs to him completely! He is the best. He is an openly gay man. He portrayed the role of a gay man who is loosing his soul-mate so well, that I had to take a double take as to if this was really happening to him. His eyes expressed more than he even spoke. His smile showed how much he misses his boyfriend. His frustration showed how he is missing having Nikhil by his side now. Like, I said about Sanjay suri, Purab is also an excellent actor – I became his fan right after Supari & Bas Yun Hi. I am looking forward to his future projects.

ONIR, the director, writer, producer He is the best! He handled the subject of Aids very well. He showed utmost sensitivity and sincerity to a gay subject line. He showed "realistic" issues and realistic characters. I am very much looking forward to any of his future movies.

Music by Vivek Philip is so beautiful and moving that any time I hear just the "la lal lllaaa.." I get a lump in my throat. Lyrics by Amitabh Verma are so beautifully written and are so relevant. Those words will haunt you… After you see this movie, you'll feel like someone very close to you just left you..

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE & CD TO YOU ALL! It's a MUST FOR Everyone! PLEASE GO SUPPORT THIS MOVIE AND IT'S MUSIC! WE NEED THESE KINDA MOVIES MADE IN India. I, for one, am very very tired of watching "masala" type movies. They are not only annoying but make you feel like an idiot sitting in the theatre watching people cry over meaningless emotionless scenes.

I simply LOVED THIS MOVIE and it's very tough to put my thoughts about this movie in words, so I had a tough time writing a review on it. So I hope I did my best to promote this wonderful movie. This movie is not to be MISSED by anyone. And for those who are arrogant and don't like gay lifestyle – only this quote can sum it up:

"It's astonishing how much energy some people Waste worrying that someone else might be Enjoying life in ways that they don't Approve of"

Take care, Bhumi

'My Brother Nikhil' is that rarest of movies made in India
rahulbhatia6 April 2005
'My Brother Nikhil' is that rarest of movies made in India: one that presents a serious story without judgment, describing the different manners in which people react to an unfamiliar crisis; all told simply, as most truths are.

A family at peace with itself - barring the usual conflicts that affect all of us - finds solace in distance and agony in nearness when their son contracts a virus. There is a dollop of melodrama when the sick son realises his new place in a social hierarchy with no space for victims of the virus. But then the movie finds its pace, subtly conveying a message through a haunting song and the son's exploration within himself.

When lives are depicted, this is how they should be. When stories are told, this is how they could be.

If you liked Black, you'll love this 1!
harjotarora26 March 2005
After "Black", "My Brother Nikhil" is another movie that can be added to the "Must See list" or a collection at home. A great film with outstanding star cast and a brilliant script. The one song in the movie "Le Chale" was really good and is perfectly set in the movie. It is not a movie that will appeal to everyone, but its for those who enjoy differeent kind of cinema. Juhi is a really good actressand must do more movies because she is definitely one of the good ones.Sanjay acted very well as well. Liletter Dubey was just fantastic (she is good in every film). There isn't much I can spoil because the movie is about AIDS and how Juhi helplessly watches her brother die but at the same time but at the same time she is the only one who stands by him. The movie deals with family conflicts, social issues in a different way. A MUST SEE! 10/10

Drama with a capital D
richb0180321 May 2006
To draw an audience and gain access to distribution channels in India, the director selected an actress of considerable talent and fame. Her title role (she's the sister of the proud gay man Nikhil about whom the story revolves) no doubt adds mass-market appeal and human warmth to this film.

But it's the writing, directing, and pacing of this drama that pulls you in and never lets you go. There are many aspects of Indian culture touched upon, but the central story is universal. When you watch this film, every little nuance of dialog and on-screen action will immediately resonate with some important person or event from your own life.

It's exceedingly rare to find a screenplay that can accomplish so much in 120 minutes (a pleasant not-too-long length given some of the 3-hour Bollywood fare out there). The director keeps the focus on one four-letter word throughout: LOVE. The family values shown in this film should be seen and felt by everyone.

When I walked into the screening here in Boston, I expected something a lot lighter. Instead I got the AIDS drama of a lifetime, it really blew me away. AIDS has never been among my favorite film topics; there are too many me-too melodramas and preachy films with cardboard characters out there. Be prepared to shed a few tears, not just of sadness but of pure joy at seeing people caring for one another in the way we all want to be loved.

A young doctoral student from China wandered into today's screening by accident, and struck up a conversation to ask me what to expect. He opted to sit through the film instead of touring the art museum. Afterward I asked him if he was glad he saw it. He said no, he's seen a lot of cases (of AIDS-related ostracism) like this in his homeland: it must have been hard for him to watch. But I'll bet he'll remember this story years from now, as I surely will.

This is a thinking and caring person's drama. Don't miss it!

Very Touching Indeed!
ssvikas12 May 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Plot Outline: Nikhil Kapoor (Sanjay Suri) is a happening young man, state swimming champion of Goa, loathed in the love of girlfriends, friends and a family consisting of Father Navin (Victor Banerjee) and mother Anita (Lilette Dubey) and sister Anu (Juhi Chawla); All put together seems 'picture-perfect'.

Things take a sudden turn when Nikhil gets knocked off his job and the swimming team while his family is ostracized by local community. Things get uglier when his parents disown him, gets arrested and confined to a sanitarium; reason: he is HIV positive, a condition about which social awareness was at its nadir in the 80's.

Only Anu and friend Nigel (Purab Kohli) support Nikhil through his phase of social disapproval till the inevitable. The movie is a portrayed from the POV of his family/friends circle on his first death anniversary.

Comment: The movie underscores that love can spark hope for people like Nikhil. Predecessor Phir Milenge highlighted the career part. But both these movies could have addressed AIDS awareness while doing the love/sympathy theme. The theme is fresh, editing neat but the music is nothing great.

Story of a sports champion, who gets HIV-positive,and his life turns around
a_humble_movie_lover7 April 2005
I just came back from a special screening of this movie.

As a rule, I try avoid sentimental films- those with an extra doze of emotions, life, et al.So, i was avoiding this one, until today when I was invited for a special show.

And I must say, what a movie! It tocuhed me deeply, throughout.

The basic premise of the movie is that Nikhil Kapoor, a National level swimming champion, is tested HIV positive. And fearing the deadly disease AIDS, the society neglects him. The very people who could not let go of him, start shunning him, and this includes his parents. The only people who stand by him are his sister and most important person in his life, Anamika (Anu), her fiancé Sam, and Nikhil's partner, Nigel. The film has an important message: not HOW a person gets AIDS (or HIV virus) ; but how the life of one with AIDS gets affected. Shot beautifully in the picturesque Goa, the story is told from view points of all people important to Nikhil's life, and his legacy beyond death.

Must watch! Nothing too revealing. Its something WE ALL KNOW these days. Just that its hard for most to accept. The movie got a standing ovation at the screening . Very well and differently made, it gets slow and dragging at times, but is so heart warming, one can let go of this minor drawback.

Go watch it!

Simply Great!
hrishi-222 July 2005
'My Brother Nikhil' is the best film I ever saw in my life. I would like to see more such films. It touched my heart and soul.

The way the film dealt with the subject of Homosexuality and HIV is very nice. Indian society needs more awareness in this field. That will help GLBT people to have better social life.

Hopefully with more such films HIV +ve people won't get discriminated. Gay people are also Human beings. They should not be object of fun in every other crappy Hindi movies. When Nikhil's parents eventually accept his bf as their 'beta', I couldn't control my tears.

Childish, low budget attempt to tackle a serious issue!
qui_j6 December 2018
This is a childish attempt to tackle a serious social issue. The dialog is beyond silly and the acting is at the level of high school drama club. The script is confusing and very stereotyped. Although an old movie that deals with an era of phobia and ignorance surrounding AIDS, it's been recently picked up by a streaming service and passed off as "new". It will really only have limited, not global appeal, due to the poor level of writing and production.

Superb
pottermaniac_168 January 2007
Superbly written and conceived. It's a story with a difference. Perhaps Bollywood's first take on the twin-taboos of homosexuality and AIDS. We had had films on AIDS before but still MBN stands out.Gay relationships were always a matter of ridicule in Bollywood. This is perhaps the first Bolly flick the looks upon such palpable emotions with so much respect.

This is the story of a man who falls from social grace and ostracized. This story portrays how the closest to us can backstab us at the time of crisis. This is also the story of a sister's unconditional love for her brother.

Purab, the film belongs to you. He is in complete ease with the camera; he portrayed the character of Nigel perfectly.Sanjay & Juhi were great too.

Last but not the least, Onir, just keep up the good work. Looking forward to see more of you.

The best movie of 2005
phillydesidude17 June 2006
2005 was a very good year for quality movies. And I can safely say that 'my brother nikhil' is the best movie. I loved 'Black' and 'Iqbal', but they come only second to MBN. They did'nt touch me as much as MBN. The credit for that goes to a lot of factors-people involved, and not just the main plot line.

The movie just flows. Never drags- excellent editing. As realistic as it could get- excellent screenplay. Completely devoid of subplots- excellent script writing. Music by Vivek Phillip is awesome. Has only one song that also plays along in the background. And what a song. Sunidhi chauhan and Shaan have delivered one of their best ever. Haunting is the word.

Sanjay Suri plays the protoganist. And boy can he act! I was impressed with his performance in 'Pinjar'. And now this. Am just appalled that he never even got nominated for any of the awards, let alone win. I think its about time that people/film industry sit up and give him credit for his talent.

Likewise, Purab Kohli deserves applause for his performance. Another talent going unnoticed by bollywood.

Juhi chawla, Victor Banerjee and Lilette Dubey all come up with wonderful performances, making their characters totally believable and they are perfectly cast. Am not undermining their calibre, but they've all been recognized and established actors. So, in the end its Sanjay and Purab who got the raw deal. And of course, Onir, the director can be added to that list too. He has handled the issue of AIDS and homosexuality with utmost maturity. Basic premise aside, he deals with so many relationship situations, and all done very realistically. Keep up the good work. Cant wait for his next 'bas ek pal'.

All in all, it's a sin to let a movie like this pass by. So if u have'nt already, please go watch it.

Yeh film sab log dekhna ki hain!
jbengel-223 July 2007
Forget everything you thought you knew about Indian cinema.

No matter where you live in the world, you need to see this film. Onir has taken a potentially controversial story and put it in a context that not only treats it with dignity and respect, but evaporates all of the cultural, political, socio-economic and even geographical boundaries that separate us. It would be easy to dismiss My Brother Nikhil as a "gay film" or an "AIDS Awareness film", but while both of those components are contained in the story, the movie is -- at its core -- a family drama. The crisis in this case is HIV/AIDS, but it could have just as easily been some other problem. AIDS is not the point, homosexuality is not the point. The point of the film is the impact of a tragic circumstance on a young man and his family.

Onir has managed to portray this drama in an even-handed manner that imposes no judgments on the characters. Sanjay Suri -- in this reviewer's estimation -- climbed several rungs of the credibility ladder with his performance in the title role. Juhi Chawla sparkles as Nikhil's sister Anamika, Victor Bannerjee and Lillete Dubey offer a seamless portrayal of parents whose world has been turned upside down and relative newcomer Purab Kholi shines as Nikhil's young lover.

In addition to being an "important" film, My Brother Nikhil is a masterpiece of lighting, photography and music. Which is why I titled this comment "Yeh film sab log dekhna ki hain!" (Everyone needs to see this film!)

Heart-wrenching Reality
sauvikchaudhuri16 August 2020
Watching My Brother Nikhil truly brings out what exists in society against people who are different. Its a bold step taken by Onir to present this story and its presented so beautifully by all. All the actors, Victor Banerjee, Juhi, Lillyte, Purab, Sanjay, Diya are powerful actors and they brought each character to real life. Dailogues, emotions, cinematography, screenplay all come together beautifully to make this into a master piece.

The best movie with best narration
abseerafdhal22 September 2019
This movie is a classic example of how Indian society was at the time of 80's and 90's. It clearly portrays the emotion of the protagonist. Apart from the drama part, we have to discuss about the movie and it's social content.

A very touching emotional movie
myemails9612 June 2010
This is again such a touching movie!!! Very well directed and all the actors justified their performances and it did touch my heart. Moreover, I watched this movie right after watching "Black" (Amitabh and Rani Mukherjee starer) and these both movies had me on an emotional roller coaster ride. So if you cannot handle a lot of emotion in one go, so I suggest you take a break in watching these movies.

The movie is very well done. The locations are well chosen. Makeup is also very good considering the situations. Juhi plays a very good role as a loving sister. Sanjay Suri has his own grace and seemed to have really put in all his efforts. Especially the scenes towards the ending of the movie are very touching. A definitely worth watching movie, if you are attached to your family.

Film for Thought...Superb!
SashaHalima12 May 2005
Warning: Spoilers
My Brother...Nikhil -- The movie left me in tears. It was refreshing to see an Indian film, dealing with a social issue that didn't try to make the issue out to be a exaggerated and hypocritical wrong thing.

I just remember seeing Girlfriend and being appalled at how the film portrayed homosexuals. I have friends that are homosexuals and they are some of the nicest people I've ever met, and that film making them out to be these insane horrible individuals was a real turn off...and that's another review!

But back to the main topic, My Brother...Nikhil was fabulous from the storyline, to the music (Le Chale - will leave your heart mourning with tears in your eyes - no matter which version you hear -- I like the Shaan version the best ), the acting is fabulous! Sanjay Suri is amazing! If he doesn't get a Filmfare or a nod from some sort of higher film academy it would be really sad. I mean, his acting, directing, everything. It's been a long time since I've seen a Hindi film that I walked away from and said "wow." There is a part of the film where Lillete Dubey who plays Nikhil's mom tells him that he was a weak baby and she wishes that he had died then as a child. This is after the family finds out Nikhil has contracted HIV...needless to say, the scene will make your jaw drop. Sanjay and Lillete are beyond amazing in this scene.

Kabhi is another song in the film... it's really a laid back tune...very Goa-Esq I think. Kind of like what Jack Johnson's music is to the US's coasts would be what Kabhi would be to Goa I suppose. It has that a beach like, laid back, but trendy sound to it. Juhi was good. She played the role as if it was made for her.

One of the things that I found the most interesting and the most refreshing about the film is the element of HOW. Meaning, the audience never finds out HOW Nikhil contracted the virus, they are just aware of the fact that he has it. I liked this dramatic element a lot because I feel that it doesn't take away from the virus or the situation at hand. It shows Nikhil has human, like you and I, a person with feelings...a golden boy who has been ousted by his surroundings. I'm glad we do not know, it leaves the mind to wonder.

I saw the making of the film on the DVD of it that I rented (it's on the Elite Films DVD version) and they were talking about how the story is based on a true story of something that did actually happen in Goa. I wasn't sure if it really was, but after wards I thought it was quite admirable to do a film such as this in Hindi cinema.

Another element of the film is the fact that it starts in the 1980s in India...which is the same decade that the USA has it own AIDS "scare".

Even if the subject matter bothers you, or you do not like Hindi films, go watch it just to Sanjay Suri portray what I would consider the role of his career!

Emotionally powerful though still not enough
Dr_Coulardeau21 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The subject of the film is about something many people have gone through: the contamination to HIV, the development of the disease of AIDS and the ultimate death of the patient. Personally I do not want to count the victims around me because that would be too sad. Some died of pulmonary infections. Some died of a vicious attack on their nervous system. Some died of Karposi skin cancer. The types and modes of death were incredibly varied. For nearly 15 to 20 years the available treatments did not do much except slow down the end and soften that end. We now have a treatment that can lengthen the life of the patients seriously, but it is no cure yet. But luckily we are far beyond Reagan's declaration that it was the punishment of god against homosexuals.

In the film we are in Goa and we are dealing with a State Champion in swimming. He finds himself HIV positive. He is expelled from the swimming team: one day he gets into the water and everyone else scrambles out. He is totally rejected by his parents, his father beating him up and his mother telling him that since he was premature at birth she wishes he could have died. He has only one refuge and it is Nigel, his friend. He is arrested and definitely roughed up by the police who took him to the hospital where he is isolated in the sanatorium, alone and totally abandoned and unable to leave. He suffers from the rejection because of the disease, which is absolutely outrageous because everyone has the right to benefit from medicine equally, at least officially. But he also suffers from the rejection because he is at once revealed to be a homosexual. Note that's the only word used in the film and the word "gay" is never used.

At this point we are deeply engulfed and drowning in some colonial heritage that India's supreme court has still not been able to declare anti-constitutional Here is their latest decision:

« IN THE SUPREME COURT 0F India CIVIL APPELLATE JURISDICTION (ORDER XL, RULE 1) REVIEW PETITION (CIVIL) No. of 2014 (Against the Order dated 11.12.2013 in Civil Appeal No. 10972 of 2013 (arising out of Special Leave Petition (Civil) No. 15436 of 2009) passed by this Hon'ble Court: Sought to be Reviewed) IN THE MATTER 0F: Dr. Shekhar Seshadri & Others . . .Petitioners Versus Suresh Kumar Koushal & Others . .Respondents

. . . This Hon'ble Court, by the impugned judgment, set aside the judgment of the High Court and held that Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code was constitutional and that it applied to acts, irrespective of age or consent of the parties involved. »

This Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code is directly inherited from the old British colonial penal code. India has not yet been able to get rid of her colonial heritage and past. We have here a typical post colonial situation.

The consequences are drastic. Nikhil is in locked up detention in total isolation in a sanatorium where he gets minimal care. His family is victimized and ostracized in the city to the point of them having to leave, though this reveals the total lack of courage of the parents, since the daughter supported by her fiancé decides to stay and look for a lawyer and fight. Nigel as Nikhil's partner is forced to go through a test, which is in a way perfectly sane and he should have decided to do it himself, and he finds out he is healthy. After the first difficult situation between the two men, Nigel becomes supportive to the end.

It is difficult to find a lawyer and there is no real legal attack possible if there is no popular support. So they start a public campaign. In that situation Nigel's home will be raided and looted. But they win the battle. Nikhil decides not to fight against his boss who does not want to reinstate him in his job and he develops a musical career for a couple of years.

Then the film shows the slow ending of this life. It is in this part that the film brings the mother first to apologizing for her violent declaration. It will take a lot more time for the father who will finally accept for Nikhil to come back home when he has reached the final phase of the disease and is no longer able to have a normal activity. Nikhil will thus die a deeply emotional death in the arms of Nigel who would have gone to sleep curled up around him waiting for that magic moment when the sun comes up at daybreak, this moment becoming the metaphor of Nikhil's death.

The film is absolutely beautiful and deeply emotional. It was shot in 2005 and it has not been able to prevent the erring position and ruling of India's Supreme Court in 2014 as quoted above. We have to keep in mind India is assuming its colonial heritage instead of questioning it and is now far behind all western countries, or nearly, and all democracies respectful of their own democratic order that recognize the right to any adult to have and practice any sexual orientation they want as long as it does not endanger the integrity and life of their partners, with of course the special case of minors who are not supposed to have sexual intercourse with adults of any type up to a certain age set by the law.

A sister's love
HeadleyLamarr4 March 2008
MBN was a simple straight forward from the heart film about the love between siblings - told from the POV of Anu (Juhi Chawla) whose state champion swimmer brother Nikhil (Sanjay Suri) becomes HIV positive. Yes there was the usual over-emotionalism associated with a dying loved one, but still this was a rather restrained film. I liked Lillette Dubey in the role of the mother who loves her son but also her husband, and the conflict within and without her that causes the parents to abandon Nikhil is well portrayed. Victor Bannerjee was believable for me as the hardliner father whose dreams are shattered and who cannot face the shame of having a son with "that disease". I think there were a few places where MBN strayed from the message a tiny bit. It was brave to show that Nikhil had a boy friend - the logical conclusion would be that the HIV infection came from this association, but then the BF is shown to not be +ve. This "excuses" the homosexuality from any "blame". From that point on, the association between Nihkil and his BF is most underplayed to further remove that factor from the equation. Perhaps the point was that it does not matter how it happens, but once it does then do not shun these people. However, I felt that maybe a stronger message could have come from the homosexual nature of their relationship being responsible.

The acting was very good all around, special honors go to Juhi for an excellent performance. Sanjay Suri was competent throughout, and then excellent in the end moments. Music was real and emotional. A nice effort by Onir.

Just Superb

Even though I'm a guy, I can admit that this is one of those movies that will make you cry. The title music and the song "Le chale" is an outstanding song..one that you can never get tired of playing on your Guitar. Amitabh Varma is at his best at writing poetry and Vivek Phillip's music goes straight to the heart. Sanjay Suri impressed me in his cameo role in "Dhoop", but he has acted out of his skin in this movie and deserves an award for his acting. His poignancy and facial expressions reminded me of Raj Kapoor at times. Great movie about a very serious issue. The soundtrack is superb as well. Other than the Le Chale song, there are some instrumental versions too, which are great. Other actors acted well too. I give it 10/10

Warning: Spoilers
My Brother Nikhil is one of the best films made, The film speaks about AIDS and also deals with homosexuality The film narrates a story of a swimming champion Nikhil who gets AIDS The film is set in Goa in late 80s to early 90s and it's well carried out, the problems Nikhil faces are well handled The drama, emotions are brilliantly and Onir also goes ahead and shows the homosexuality angle naturally unlike other films which overdo those portions The film leaves you moist-eyed and also yet tries to open your eyes regarding the misconception that AIDS is caused due to homosexuality

Direction by Onir is great Music is good, the usage of Konkani songs suits the theme well

Sanjay Suri is one of the brilliant underrated actors, he performs so flawlessly that I still wonder why he doesn't get much films nowdays? Juhi Chawla is fantastic, Purab Kohli as Sanjay Suri's gay partner is brilliant, he doesn't overdo it Victor Banerjee is flawless, Lillete Dubey is perfect too Dipannita Sharma has a brief role and is okay, Shweta Kawaatra is good rest are okay
