Rather philosophical than funny...
Veronica-Zell2 March 2005
Okay, I noticed most of the crowd laughing hard while watching this movie while I always asked myself: What is sooo funny about a guy writing love letters on the backside of a speeding ticket? I'm not saying it is NOT funny, but I think the quality of this film lies clearly in its subtle humor. The philosophical debate about life and everything (which reminded me a little of the late great Douglas Adams) with the somehow deranged transsexual was REALLY one of the highlights, incredibly funny and to some degree very true. But no one was laughing here... Uhm... I have the notion that Hormoon is more a movie for guys - clearly there are way more guys in it and we learn by far more about what guys think than what women have to say about love and romance. So I'd give Hormoon a 0 from a woman's perspective and a 10 from what I assume guys consider entertainment. Watch it with your boyfriends, girls!

Funny, genuine idea - with few flaws
Christian-Maerkl6 September 2005
This movie was on Pay-TV recently and not much attracted me in the first place - the title is somehow irritating (what's that combination of hormones and moon?? I don't get it), the EPG description was somehow strange ("A student discovers the secrets of love" - what is this for a hollow phrase??? Please!).

It was less the story that finally drew me in: A young guy is in love and his roommates tease him that he is just horny - that's it. Simple and seen before a million times. But what really made me roll on the floor were the tiny things, like writing a love letter on the back of a speeding ticket. This film is stuffed with strange and hilariously funny gags and ideas that really gave me a great time :-). Thank you for that! The acting is not perfect, but still - I loved Enno Hesse with his puppy eyes, and Fari Yardym with his grotesque hairdo and stupid expression on his face. Really, a great, great laugh with a great, great funny finale.

Extremely funny comedy. Don't miss it.
Peter-Berg2 March 2005
Hormoon was on the program at a film festival in Hamburg. Already bored to death by some other really strange films that can only be conceived by someone taking way too much pills, Hormoon was a real delight. It is a fast, fresh, lightweight story about a young student being pulled down to lives reality. The question and topic is really simple: Whats the difference between sex and love? Okay, we've heard about this thousands of times but it is just a BIG good laugh to see how the naive main character encounters his totally "over-cool" friends.

The film follows the main character for just one single day (and night) where he tries to find out the truth about his feelings - this might sound serious, but its not. This film is a very good comedy, nothing more, nothing less.

Heartwarming, funny story
loophole-110 March 2005
I do not really agree with the other commentators on Jan Braband's latest film (I think this is his 10th short (?)) - Sure, Hormoon is funny, and everything seems to work just to the big finale and "gag" (which I will not reveal here, look for yourself ;-*).

But there really IS more in this film and it is sad to see that most people don't notice it because they're busy laughing. The whole character of Tom radiates something magically optimistic, even when life hits him hard and we see him close to tears or broken down, there is always that little glimpse of positive energy in him that makes him so sympathetic and believable. I really enjoy watching films where one of the main characters carry this kind of "light". Actor Enno Hesse is playing this part quite well, compared to his rather stiff performance in other films (he had a small part in "Der Untergang"/"The Falldown" and I think he's now on every second Tatort or so - I see him a lot on the screen).

The film could definitely have some more "breaks". It has a quite fast pace (at least for me!), and though I've heard that there is a "long" version I was never able to see it. So better keep down your laughs and giggles a little and try to LISTEN and THINK. You will probably find a lot of interesting, tiny things.

Boooooooring!

Warning: Spoilers
Maybe I've missed something, but, boy, this film was boring.

A young guy who is after a fellow student, but she does not even notice him. Then, one day, they meet at a salad bar (funny - yawn!), they start to talk, and he has a date for the following night.

Unfortunately he is too nervous to deal with the date, ruins his cell phone, misses the details of the date, and ends up in a red-light bar drinking beer with a transvestite and being depressed.

Come on! I don't want to say it's really bad story, but it's not something NEW. It is boring. I knew from the first minute how this would end.

It's a well made film - but I wish I would see more interesting stories. Especially for a short, which has much more potential to experiment.
