An entertaining romantic comedy
coyets20 June 2005
In this rather ludicrous but nevertheless entertaining tale, the multifarious humour allowed many changes of pace in the unfolding of the plot. The appearances of Dirk Bach, which were typical for this comedian, were not to my taste. However, he has many admirers, who would surely find these scenes very amusing.

Theresa Scholze's acting was perfect for the character she portrayed, a surprisingly complex portrayal for such a flippant comedy. She was backed up solidly by Jochen Schropp, who played his role somewhat more comically at times.

Although it is not a musical film, the music is another positive feature, particularly the rendering of a popular song during an evening out towards the end.

If sex were not such a central theme of the storyline, this could almost be family entertainment, because the pace, style and atmosphere are just right for children to watch with adults.

Not entertaining. Not romantic.

Warning: Spoilers
"Popp Dich schlank!" is a German television film from 2005, so this one is already over a decade old, actually soon 15 years, and if you hear that it is a ProSieben movie, then maybe as a German you know what to expect already and that you have to fearf the worst. The only notable mention here is director Christoph Schrewe because he managed a really successful transition from here in Germany to quality American television filmmaking and it's baffling to see what he worked on in the early days of his career. So I guess the reason why this is such a failure we got here is the script and not the direction. The actors (or lets say their lack of talent) are not helping either. The male lead is garbage from start to finish, the female has an okay moment here and there, but isn't much better either to be honest. There's a reason that probably not a single cast member in here is known today anymore, with the exception of the late Dirk Back perhaps, who was clearly added to promote the film and get larger audiences to see it, even if his character is entirely pointless. Other than that, you have it all in terms of negative aspects. It's basically The Ballad of Paul and Paula gone very wrong. Two close friends have crushes on other people, so they decide to have sex occasionally with each other after hearing that it makes them lose weight easily. With that the film also sends out the very wrong message to people insecure about their weights as honestly there is nothing wrong about them at all. They are not obese or overweights by any means. On the contrary, they are very attractive people, like basically everybody else in here, which shows that looks were the prime premise in casting here, certainly not talent. The story is as garbage too of course. Pseudo drama that never feels authentic and a cringeworthy unrealistic plot twist at the end that could be foreseen in the first 15-20 minutes already. And the worst is that the film takes itself seriously in terms of selling us grand love here eventually. Man this was painful. What else can you say about it? Oh yeah, when the film does not take itself seriously, namely during the many comedy occasions, it was just as bad and very unfunny. And finally, a word on the music: They used several good songs here and tried to connect them theme- and lyrics-wise to certain story developments in the film. And the consequence is that if you don't be careful, then these songs will really be ruined for you forever. There is only one conclusion here. Stay far far away from this horrible 1.5-hour film. Highly not recommended and yes it is as bad as the title suggests. Huge thumbs-down.
