We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.
The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This season’s central murder appears to take place at a theater (outside the building) but I think we’ll let it slide.
That’s far from the only worthwhile original in August as Aug. 2 sees the premiere of the third and final season of superb comedy Reservation Dogs. That will be followed by South Korean sci-fi series Moving on Aug. 9, Solar Opposites season 4 on Aug. 14, and A Murder at the End of the World on Aug. 29. Of course,...

Ray Price, a respected producer of indie filmmaking, died July 16 from heart failure after a long battle with cancer. The news was confirmed by his long-term partner Meg Madison. He was 75 years old.
Price launched his film career in 1972, managing the Berkeley storefront theater the Rialto, and went on to build with Allen Michaan Renaissance Theaters, an independent art film chain that became one of the largest (33 at its peak) in the Bay Area and was later sold to the Landmark Theatre circuit.
A tough negotiator and exacting exhibitor, under Price’s stewardship, Renaissance Theaters were renowned for redesigning marketing materials, from posters to press books — designs that fledgling distributors often adopted when the films hadn’t found success in other markets.
At a time when most top arthouse distributors focused on established auteurs from Europe and Asia, Renaissance Theaters exploded those norms by programming new American directors like Martin Scorsese and John Cassavetes.

The episode of Revisited covering 28 Weeks Later was Written by Andrew Hatfield, Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Edited by Paul Bookstaber, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
2007 was a perfect year for films. We were graced with the first Transformers film in the series, which is still the best. Spider-Man 3 showed us that Tobey Maguire has some of the best dance moves in town, Judd Apatow provided us with great summer laughs in both Knocked Up and Superbad, Bruce Willis’s John McClaine returned in Live Free or Die Hard and a little rat warmed our hearts by serving us a dish of perfection in Ratatouille. While that’s all perfect, I’d say that I had my highest hopes for one movie in particular… 28 Weeks Later (watch it Here). You may be thinking, of all the films, that’s the...

Scream rewired the horror audience in 1996, exploring anew the connective tissue that bridged the history of the genre with its future patrons and purveyors. The resulting franchise encompassed a host of familiar tropes of both the slasher and “whodunit” variety, comprising ringing phones accompanied by mysterious callers, self-aware and snarky young adults and rules to survive by that, perhaps by design, often don’t hold all that true in the end.
But just as important as any recurring narrative beat or cameoing survivor is a song. While it only plays for what amounts to a handful of minutes over the course of five films, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ “Red Right Hand” is as instrumental to the atmosphere of the Scream franchise as the looming threat of those who hide behind the trademark white mask caught in its silent howl.
First coined by 17th century poet John Milton in his 1667 epic Paradise Lost,...

Los Angeles, Feb 22 (Ians) Actress Robin Wright said she would love the chance to star in ‘Paradise Lost’, a prequel series to ‘Wonder Woman’ as her DC character Antiope.
When James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled the new DC Universe slate in January, the lineup included a ‘Wonder Woman’ prequel series titled ‘Paradise Lost’ that is set for HBO Max. Not much about the series is known other than it’s a ‘Game of Thrones’-ish story set on the island of Themyscira before the birth of Diana (aka Wonder Woman).
“I loved playing an Amazon,” Wright said in an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, reports Variety.
“I kinda feel like I was the leader of an Amazon tribe in my past life. I haven’t received that call (about ‘Paradise Lost’) yet. Maybe I’m too old!”

In 2013, Bradley Cooper starred as a police officer in one of his most critically acclaimed films Place Beyond the Pines. But the movie’s content might have initially discouraged Cooper from taking the part.

DC Studios Co-Chairmen and CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran today announced plans for their first 10 film and television projects under the new DC banner they lead across film, television, and animation.
The duo is prepping and implementing a long-term interconnected story for the iconic franchise and characters, and today announced the beginning of "Chapter 1" focused on "Gods and Monsters" with five new films and five television series for HBO Max already in development.
"As we craft the plan for DC Studios, we are thrilled to share with fans the first 10 stories they can expect from the unified DC Universe featuring some of our most well-known characters as well as the next generation of marquee characters," said Safran.
"Chapter 1 tells cohesive stories that highlight love, compassion, and the innate goodness of the human spirit, all designed to minimize audience confusion and maximize audience engagement across platforms.

James Gunn has promised a more “unified” DC future going forward, outlining an extensive plan.
It’s been three months since Gunn and co-ceo Peter Safran took over DC studios in October, and in their first official meeting with the press on Monday (30 January), the two shared their vision, which includes 10 new projects.
Gunn argued that much of the company’s former disarray came from its loose policy regarding intellectual property.
“The history of DC is pretty f***ed up,” he said (via Variety). “They were just giving away IP like they were party favours to any creators.
“What we are going to do is we’re going to promise that everything from our first project forward is going to be unified. But we will say that we’ve gotten very lucky [inheriting these] next four projects.”

To say that the folks at DC Studios have had a rough go of it lately is an understatement. The lack of a collective vision, coupled with strokes of ego, left a bunch of question marks up in the air regarding the direction of the company's future. But with co-chair and co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm, they made it clear that they were going to get this ship back on track. After much speculation, the new era of DC is shaping up to look pretty solid.

After teasing that he and fellow DC Studios CEO Peter Safran today began talking up some of the movies and shows we can expect. And that includes new versions of Batman, Superman, Supergirl, Green Lantern and more. Watch the announcement here, and read the full breakdown below.
Gunn started by confirming that the existing DC movies still to be released — Shazam! Fury Of The Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom – will all still make it to cinemas, with The Flash and its universe-rebooting nature proving key to helping to usher in the new paradigm. They will lead into what Gunn and Safran are calling 'Gods And Monsters', effectively the first chunk of the first part of the plan. It'll be a mix of TV (both animated and live-action) and movies, with games tying in as needed.
So what can we expect? Gunn talked up 10 initial titles.

James Gunn, co-ceo of DC Studios, has a plan for the next eight to 10 years, and it involves several TV shows, including a spinoff of a popular HBO Max one and another that we’ve been hearing about in development for a while. “As many of you know, DC has been disconnected in film and television for a long time. It’s one of our jobs, mine and Peter [Safran]’s, is to come in and make sure the Dcu is connected in film, television, gaming, and animation, that the characters are consistent, played by the same actors, and it works within one story,” Gunn says. Anything outside of that will be labeled DC Elseworlds. Watch the video below for more. Among the series are Waller, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, Booster Gold, and Creature Commandos. For those who have enjoyed watching Viola Davis as Amanda Waller in the Dcu (including Peacemaker), she...

“Wonder Woman 3” might be canceled, but fans won’t have to say goodbye to the Amazons permanently. As part of presentation of upcoming DC Films projects Tuesday, studio heads James Gunn and Peter Safran announced “Paradise Lost,” a live-action series exploring the origins of the godlike, all-women society.
The series will take place before the birth of Diana Prince — who of course eventually becomes Wonder Woman — exploring how the island of Themyscira came to exist in the first place. And according to Gunn and Safran, it will draw inspiration from a much darker source than fans might expect.
“It’s going to be a ‘Game of Thrones’-ish story about Themyscira, Paradise Island, the home of the Amazons and it’s also the birthplace of Wonder Woman,” Safran said. “This drama, it’s really about the political intrigue behind a society of all women.”

When you think of DC Comics, what comes to mind? Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, perhaps Aquaman or The Flash. That's to be expected, as they are largely considered the marquee characters of the brand. You probably wouldn't put characters like Booster Gold, G.I. Robot, or arguably even Swamp Thing next to them, if you even know who they are.
However, as we have learned from the newly-announced DC Universe slate, both classic and overlooked characters will be getting their time to shine on-screen. Co-CEOs and co-heads of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, seem eager to explore the weirder side of the esteemed comic property with these new titles. Among the newly-revealed projects in development are a "Swamp Thing" feature film, a movie centering around the anti-hero team The Authority, and an animated series focusing on the Creature Commandos. James Gunn has made good on his promise to announce his first projects since taking over as the head of DC Studios with Peter Safran. James Gunn’s official DC Slate was revealed at a private press event on the Warner Bros lot in Burbank that out own JimmyO was lucky enough to attend yesterday. In his opening remarks, Gunn mentioned the plan was to go from Shazam: Fury of the Gods to The Flash to Blue Beetle to Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom to (gasp) Superman. And indeed, the Man of Steel will be returning in a film called Superman: Legacy (to be written by Gunn himself) which is due out on July 11th, 2025, and will be the first feature to be made by Gunn’s group. No director or cast announced yet. The Batman – Part II will also be a 2025 release, with Gunn confirming an October 3rd, 2025 release date.

In the midst of their third month as newly appointed DC co-Bosses, James Gunn and Peter Safran finally revealed their plans for an inter-connective universe for the comic book giant spanning largely film and TV in a strategy unlike the Warner Bros. brand has ever had before.
Entitled Chapter One, “Gods and Monsters”, a portion of what will unfold between 2025-2027 includes five movies including the Gunn-penned Superman Legacy, a new Batman and Robin title, The Brave and the Bold, a Swamp Thing feature, and films centering around Supergirl and the deeper universe DC rogue squad The Authority. On the TV side, there’s an animated series, Creature Commandos written by Gunn, the Peacemaker spinoff live action series Waller with Viola Davis, a Lanterns series, Booster Gold and Paradise Lost.
Outside of Waller, which has some of the returning cast of Peacemaker, there isn’t any talent or directors attached to these projects.

There was every reason to expect "Club Paradise" would be the comedy smash of Summer 1986. Harold Ramis was two-for-two as a director thanks to "Caddyshack" and "National Lampon's Vacation," and scorching hot off the blockbuster success of "Ghostbusters." Ramis had reunited with his "National Lampoon's Animal House" collaborator Chris Miller to hammer out the story, and hooked up once again with his "Caddyshack" co-writer Brian Doyle-Murray for the screenplay. And then there was the cast: Robin Williams, Peter O'Toole, Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Joe Flaherty, Robin Duke, and Mary Gross. How could a film stuffed with this much comedic talent possibly miss?
Aside from Ramis and Levy playing a couple of hapless, horn-dog tourists who inadvertently score a trash bag full of marijuana, just about nothing works in "Club Paradise." The notion of a retired Chicago firefighter (Williams) starting up a ramshackle Caribbean resort with his disability money sounds promising,...

Charter Communications is shutting down Spectrum Originals, the home of shows such as L.A.’s Finest and Joe Pickett, as the media company moves away from its original programming plans. As first reported by Deadline, the decision to shut down the premium cable channel comes as Charter’s former Head of Original Content, Katherine Pope, is leaving to become President of Sony Pictures Television Studios. A Spectrum representative told Deadline that it will be a gradual process as the company explores options for its various series in the coming weeks and months. Spectrum Originals launched in 2019 with the Bad Boys spinoff L.A.’s Finest starring Jessica Alba and Gabrielle Union, which NBC had passed on. Since then, the network has picked up shows such as the Mad About You revival, Paradise Lost, The Bite, and the neo-Western Joe Pickett, which has become Spectrum’s top-rated series and was recently renewed for a second season.
