Big fan of The Sports Fan
Tom_Seim30 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Tucker Lucas (writer and director) has raised the bar on (really) short films. Given the two minutes that was allotted for the Fargo Film Festival's side venue: The Two Minute Film Festival, Lucas made the perfect flick. When asked about his hobbies in a job interview, Matt Burkholder (played by himself) can only fib about what it is. Burkholder delivers as we are flashed back to a scene that shows us what Mr. Burkholder really does for a hobby. Matt Burkholder and Brad Delzer star in this short comedy. Clever and even a little unsettling, The Sports Fan is worth your two minutes. We hope to see much more from the talented director and writer, Tucker Lucas.

Incredible!

Warning: Spoilers
Unafraid to show the stark realism of one man's battle with his inner clown, "The Sports Fan" is among the most brutally honest short films made in recent years. Not many filmmakers today would be willing to dive into the strange, yet oddly gripping mindset of someone struggling to control his own inner desires. Through doing just this, director Tucker Lucas has managed to create a short film packed sky-high with raw human emotion.

And as a in-the-closet clown myself, this film managed to touch me on a very personal level.

Some may call this a comedy. I call it art. Kudos to Tucker Lucas.

The best American film since "Gone With the Wind"!!

Tucker Lucas, a cinematically nimble, awe-inspiring auteur, has created what is, unquestionably, one of the most emotionally expansive, powerfully evocative human-interest stories ever brought to the silver screen. With the sort of epic scope we rarely see in pictures today (Lucas reminds me of David Lean in his prime, e.g., "Lawrence of Arabia"), the canvas, though broad, is literally covered with unforgettable, cineramaesque images and moments that will take your breath away and remain with you forever.

It may seem foolish to compare this film to "Gone With the Wind," but really, no other film in terms of mere breadth and ingenuity, comes nearly as close to "The Sports Fan." I don't know what this talented, promising young filmmaker has up his sleeve next (the word on the street is he's working on an ambitious costume piece/sci-fi/historical drama--who knows!), but you can bet dollars to doughnuts I'll be eagerly awaiting, on pins and needles, for that movie. Tucker Lucas is an American treasure.
