Good but far from great
lukejenkin17 November 2007
This is not a bad movie. The acting is very good and the direction is solid. I get the impression from the DVD extras that the budget was cut during the making of this and it does show.

The fight scenes lack any real passion, and lack any real empathy with the main protagonists. I feel some of the main characters needed to be fleshed out somewhat more. As a viewer I felt that the director had a very strong feel for each character in his head but couldn't fully portray it in the final movie.

This sounds negative and I don't want to leave that impression. I would recommend this as a good film that has a interesting story and strong characterisation. I look forward to seeing what the people behind this produce in the future. I think the best is ahead.

Not so bad

Warning: Spoilers
I didn't like the last review of this movie as it was a little harsh.

I feel the movie wasn't all about martial arts and feel there was far too much hype with this film i have heard many comments like "bring mma to mainstream" which i feel this film didn't accomplish.

The acting by Clovis Cornillac was quality and i feel he played angelo well,he also had a very natural look fighting especially when doing ground work (grappling) and it seemed like he has been doing mma for years.

I read somewhere that he wanted to be a boxer when he was a child?well maybe you should have taken it up as you look like you picked up the technique quickly when training for the movie.

Overall i feel the film is a good watch i gave it 6/10 as it could have been a lot better than it was maybe a bit more fighting, more of him training for the fighting and him showing a great love for martial arts.

A downer
gridoon202422 April 2008
Washed-up ex-fighter is approached by shady manager and convinced to enter the illegal / no-rules fighting circuit, but what he's really looking for is redemption. Though better made than the similar films Jean Claude Van Damme was making in the early 90's ("Lionheart", for example), "Scorpion" will probably not satisfy most martial arts fans. The fights are brutal but suffer from flashy over-editing which makes them hard to follow. And the severely unpleasant subplot about a barwoman who is also forced to work as a prostitute for a violent criminal is both a downer and a distraction. The acting is convincing across the board, but there is only so much you can do with this story. (**)

what the hell is this
super_he_man198316 March 2007
The film looked good in the trailers. It looked brutal and the fights looked realistic. I thought this was going to bring MMA into mainstream movies. I thought this was going to be the future of Mixed Martial Arts movies. What a let down, which was made worse by the fact that i watched it without subtitles (the film's in French, i think). This was billed as a Mixed Martial Arts movie, but it didn't have any proper fights. the fights did not necessarily have to be fancy, but they could've done some better choreography. Even Power Rangers had better fights than this. Martial Artists or MArtial Arts fans stay away from this movie.

Fair Effort i think!?
Lleveridge7716 September 2007
Go easy people its real hard being a pioneer(joke).....but this film is an attempt to at least try to use 'real' fighting in a fictional story. It is notoriously hard to make most effective techniques used in MMA to look good on the big screen,so i think its a darn nice try!Obviously you must be open minded when were brought up on a steady diet of such spectacular footage that we all are nowadays-there is no comparison. However i do advise giving this one a try as i sort of enjoyed it(in the dark with loud surround sound guys).....maybe i am a little biased seeing as though my favourite K1 fighter is in it(Jerome Le Banner) but hey what u gonna do?

Definitely not what it says on the cover.
Tony-82317 February 2008
My brother came home with this, because he knows what a big MMA fan i am, and the back of the cover says "Scorpion is the definitive mixed martial arts movie".

First off, the cover mentions nothing of the movie being french with subs, but anyway ...

I was hoping this was going to be a good movie, to strengthen the argument for MMA, helping it get even more exposure, how stupid was I ? The writers/directors were doing exactly the same as the gang leader/fight manager/whoever he was. They made this movie, hoping that the popularity MMA has at the moment, would make them rich.

Eye gouging, fish hooking, stomps to a downed opponent, the only part of this movie I would call MMA were the gloves !

Better than the average martial arts movie defecating out of Hollywood nowadays.
healersmallbush15 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I remember seeing the trailer on a DVD about a year ago, and I had forgotten all about it until I was browsing through our TV movie rentals. The trailer showed very little so I looked up the film on IMDb and found an average review of 5.1. Nonetheless, I watched it anyway and I must say I was not disappointed.

Perhaps my expectations were low given the reviews, but I also think that with the type of 'Martial Art' films coming out nowadays, it seems a fight scene that has been adulterated with showoff moves is coming hard to find. Scorpion does not do this. It shows not just the sport, but the powers behind it, as brutal and unforgiving, in and outside the ring.

The film opens up a well for the main protagonist to deal with his personal flaws, which we see head on in an early scene. It really allows us to see a flawed fighter, lacking discipline due to inexplicable rage, despite his love, dedication and respect for the sport.

Fight scenes are not as extravagant as something cooked up in a current Jet Li film. They are raw and closer to something seen on UFC. If anything, I respected the film for this. The scenes made more sense, and they weren't about declaring a winner, or making our protagonist look like a superhero. What was there was pure and a lot more believable that what is seen in movies today.

By the end of the film, the was a real sense of accomplishment for the major characters. Loyalties shifted to where they were of genuine importance, and there was a learnt understanding for the key characters of why those of us need strength through violence to survive through difficult circumstances, whereas others find that violence itself is no substitute for things in life that are more important.

I would urge those who prefer classic fighting movies to watch this, but that wanting another over the top, severely choreographed Jackie Chan show-off ride, should look the other way.

Not so bad
MaDJiK27 August 2007
Scorpion is certainly not a fighting movie, the combat scenes are not very impressive.

But the story is good (not great, but good!). It reminds me Danny the Dog (from Luc Besson with Jet Li). First of all, it's the story of a man who seems a bit strange because of his past. And he is getting better, appreciating life again...

The music is giving the right atmosphere. The director makes a good job, this is not boring (as often in french movie, and I can say that because I am french!).

So we spend a good time, you can watch it!

Awesome!
thebuddaa22 February 2008
In my eyes this film was great. Trailer was a beast and was worried that the film might not live up to my expectations... But it did! good story, good fighting, hot women... hey what more can a guy ask for! It's a simple story easy to understand and easy to watch The fighting is good although more could have been shown but what was shown was very enjoyable. Big Angelo is a champ no matter who he is up against he will accept the challenge! scorpion is awesome! Reviews i have read have been harsh as far as i'm concerned for a lower budget film it really is superb! I would recommend this as A Must watch if you enjoy fighting films.

not good not great but worth a watch
shadowman12322 September 2008
Scorpion is one of those movies which you will watch for the sake of watching. I mean french action movies are rarley boring, and Scorpion ain't no different. Okay it sets the mood nicely however the acting may not be the greatest but it certainly is entertaining. Check it out if your a fan of mixed martial arts movies , however don't expect anything big or like the best mixed martial arts movie. The acting is cheesy , the script is crap but the story told is a good one and thats what keeps you watching , its like one of tough guy movies you just watch for the sake of watching.

Fans of Punchfighters in the MMA vein with an open mind will get the most out of Scorpion.

Warning: Spoilers
Angelo (Cornillac) was born to fight. Or so he thinks. After a bad break, Angelo hits the skids, becomes semi-homeless and all but loses the will to live. When a shady promoter named Marcus (Renaud) approaches him to revitalize his career, because he recognizes him as an up and coming boxer from years past, Angelo sees that Marcus wants the newest, hottest style in underground fighting - MMA. So Angelo duly shakes off his slovenly ways, does his push-ups and crunches, and trains to get back in the ring. After fighting his way through the standard Boxcar Guillaumes, he is ready to beat the snot out of the heavy hitters.

As you might expect, there are a couple of problems. One involves a woman named Virginie (Rocher). Even though she leads a miserable life as both a prostitute and a bartender under Marcus, Angelo sees her and her young son Milan as a chance for redemption and a new life away from the grueling rigors of underground fighting. At first, Virginie rebuffs him and he's back in his rage-filled ways. But can that change?

The other involves a woman named Lea (Proust), who appears to be a reporter doing a story on underground fighting but, as fate would have it, is a police officer trying to get dirt on Marcus. It doesn't help that underground fighting is illegal in Paris. Naturally, it all comes down to "One Last Fight" - but it's going to be a doozy, with Angelo having to square off against a mighty mountain of meathead named Elias (Le Banner). Will Angelo be able to turn his life around? Will Marcus be held to account for his illegal wheelings and dealings? And what about Virginie and Lea? Will a powerful female influence calm the raging waters of the SCORPION?

"FINISH HIM!!"...is not said in this film, and anyone expecting a biopic on the beloved Mortal Kombat character will be sorely disappointed. However, Scorpion - this Scorpion - is a quality film, and a rare example of an underground fighting movie that's so good, it really doesn't need most of the underground fighting we see on display. Paradoxically, all the fight scenes tend to bring the movie down. Seeing as the film is an unnecessary 98 minutes, they could have cut a lot of the MMA fights because the storyline stands on its own.

Scorpion is an improvement over director Seri's previous film, The Great Challenge (2004), and it shows that he's a true filmmaker in the time-honored French tradition. It seemed that he wanted to temper that "Frenchness" a bit by having an MMA-based storyline, but we say that wasn't needed. We say go with your gut and your traditions - and clearly where Scorpion shines is in its gritty drama, its serious-minded tone, and its high-tier cinematography.

In that sense, Scorpion is a lot like Redbelt (2008) - a high-caliber film all-around that not only doesn't need to lean on extended fight scenes to pad out the running time, but barely needs the fight scenes at all. The plot follows a standard Punchfighting formula we've seen countless times, but the actors carry it off in a way that's much better than usual.

Scorpion is a good film, and it shows that French guys can be tough. Fans of Punchfighters in the MMA vein with an open mind will get the most out of Scorpion.

The Scorpion review.
niallmurphy-3005123 July 2022
The script can be a bit melodramatic at times but the acting is good and the fight scenes are good. If you like martial arts films and you are a fan of Clovis Cornilliac, Karole Rocher, Caroline Proust or Olivier Marchal then this film is worth watching.

pacing is off
Another IMDb member tipped me that this was worth seeing so I ordered the DVD.

Started great, and then wound down. Which is really really ironic since the whole point of MMA and martial arts is pacing. So what good is a film that exhausts itself off the top? To put the review in perspective, as weak as it is, it is still a much more entertaining product that the DTV stuff that is now coming out of the US MMA circuit, where the "big names" in the sport think it is really cool if they bypass the middle man (ie, Hollywood) and make the films themselves, starring themselves, written and directed by themselves. Yuck.

And it does not even come close to the quality of Warrior or Forbidden Kingdom, the two martial arts films I have seen in my lifetime.

Brilliant
spikebike10924 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This film is brilliant. The acting is good and i believe that the story line although simple it does the job. The fighting in it will please martial artists because people who have trained in thai boxing, mixed martial arts or a form of ground fighting such as Brazilian ju jitsu will recognise some of the moves.

The moves that are real techniques will please martial artists who are sick of karate kid style martial arts techniques in movies.

The plot uses emotions that many of us have felt at one time or another.

All in all a brilliant film with good acting, simple but effective plot and good fights
