Marshal Higgins and Kid Hooker are both at Miss Effie Trindle's and both are calling on her with flowers and candy. Miss Effie invites them both in for some pie but Higgins orders Hooker back to the office. Rip and Rusty arrive in town as Rip needs to get on a stage, and Rusty is staying with the Marshal.
Rip and Rusty catch up with Higgins at Miss Effie's where Higgins claims Hooker is putting a gang together to steal the payroll coming into town. Miss Effie doesn't believe it, but she is going to have Rusty stay with her. Higgins finds Hooker in the saloon with three gunmen: J,B Tardash, Cleg Compson, and Hud. Higgins orders them to get out of town.
Needing a deputy, Higgins swears in Rinty as a deputy. Higgins and Rinty start their night rounds and all seems to be OK so Higgins sends Rinty back to Rusty. But Hooker and his gang are robbing the bank thinking the payroll is there. Higgins stops Hooker, and Rinty has returned and grabs Cleg but the other two robbers escape.
Hooker is in jail with Cleg but Tardish and Hud return to help his men break jail; then they lock Higgins in his own jail. Rinty goes to wake Rusty so he can come back and get Higgins out of jail. Higgins and Rusty and Rinty start tracking Hooker; but Hooker gets the drop on Higgins. Hooker claims he was already on the job trying to capture J.B. and the rest of the real robbers. Hooker tells Higgins to move the payroll to his office and then get a posse together to lie in wait for J.B. and his men. J.B. sends a fake telegram to the town to convince the posse the robbery is taking place in another town.
Now it's just Higgins and Hooker to hold off the real robbers. Just as they are about to be rushed, Rip and the posse arrive. Rinty had picked up the real trail as J.B. was circling back, so the posse returned to capture the bandits.
Once again Higgins and Hooker are both "courting" Miss Effie again, and are jealous of one another. Rip makes them shake hands and agree to stop fighting.
