Old magic
sonnyschlaegel8 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Lou Bundles was once a very famous illusionist. He is still performing, but often his tricks don't work any more. He can't accept that he is getting too old for the job. He is about to be fired, but then he buys a new deck of cards. They are actually rather old; he doesn't want to use modern plastic cards any longer (he blames them for his messed up card-tricks). His new old cards seem to have a life of their own, beginning to show some tricks of which Lou himself doesn't know how they work. The cards help him to be successful again. But they are old, like Lou, and it seems they are getting tired, too...

I liked this story, especially the ending (I don't want to spoil it, so I won't say why). I liked the acting, too, especially Sid Caesar as the protagonist of the story. And I think the special effects are really good for an 80s TV series. However, I liked some other episodes better because they were funnier, had more surprises or were more amazing, so I haven't given this one as many points as I have given the others.

"When my time comes, I'll let you know."
classicsoncall21 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Sid Caesar is appropriately cast as old time magician Lou Bundles in this whimsical story that has him discovering an old deck of cards that suddenly revive his moribund act at Murray's (Leo Rossi) Magic Castle. Lou's only problem is he doesn't know how the card tricks work, as they seem to have a mind of their own. He can direct them to a certain extent, as in the marriage of the King and Queen of Hearts, but in the privacy of his own room, he can't even get them to shuffle. In effect, the cards are out of his control, perhaps a metaphor for the inability to stop Father Time from taking it's measure from the best of performers. When Lou finally comes to that realization, he and his act go out in style with a message to the night club patrons at the Magic Castle. After that, it's let the cards fall where they may.

Not great....which makes it much better than average for this series.

Sid Caesar plays Lou, a has-been magician who has lost it. He now sucks and is rather pathetic when he tries to perform his tricks. He's so bad that he's fired--and he clearly deserves to be fired! Oddly, however, when he's not working and eating in a diner, he's terrific and entertains the customers with his insanely good magic skills. What gives?! Later, when he finds another job doing magic, he once again sucks. But, when he whips out a deck of magic cards, REAL magic soon begins--and Lou has no idea what's going on but he's happy to run with it!

So is this any good? Well, it is nice to see Sid Caesar. However, the card tricks are too impossible and too ridiculous to make much sense--and that does harm the episode. If the show had been handled with a bit more subtlety it would have worked MUCH better. Still, considering how many early episodes of "Amazing Stories" really sucked, it's nice to see one that is at least reasonably entertaining.

Caesar Shines
ccthemovieman-130 August 2007
Sid Caesar was just great in this show. He plays "Lou Bundles," a veteran magician, a guy who has performed at this same nightclub for 50 years! He's losing it, his talent and his mind. Just after he talks the boss into not firing him, Lou takes a trip into an old magic shop and buys a deck of old playing cards.

These cards are....well....amazing and pretty soon Lou is talking to them as if they were human. In the end, Lou....well.....goes out in style.

This was an excellent show thanks to a neat little story, and some great work by Caesar. I also enjoyed his "fans" at the diner. There were all good people in here. Leo Rossi, of the "Relenltess" series of feature films, plays Lou's boss.

Nothing More Pathetic Than a Magician Who Has Lost it
Hitchcoc21 May 2014
Sid Caesar does a great job as a magician, Lou Bundles, who has lost his touch. He becomes a laughing stock and is asked to step down from the act he has done for fifty years. He drops eggs, doves escape, he can't even do a simple card trick. Then one day, he purchases an ancient deck of playing cards. These cards have a mind of their own and can be manipulated to do almost anything. He has them perform a wedding ceremony, fly through the air and sail over the customers, and any manner of things. The problem is that he has not idea how this is done. He develops an act but never has real control. It is wonderful watching Caesar work. He was a fine actor in his own right. I think this is one of the better episodes in the series.

A lucky deck you never know what's in the cards and in one's life!
blanbrn23 March 2019
This "AS" episode from season one in November of 1985 called "Mr. Magic" is one that's fun, entertaining and charming with a sentimental feel of old age and going away with time. It involves Lou Bundles(Sid Caesar) a past his prime stumbling and bumbling, fumble like stage magician who seems to be on his last leg act. However a mysterious deck of cards are found and new life is given to his feel and act it's like a magic deck is on hand and in the cards! Overall heartfelt and touching episode that made me a viewer feel good and sentimental.
