A chance to see Nolte and Singer before they were stars.
planktonrules14 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Mark Rainey (Nick Nolte) is an awful person and a professional football player. Despite being married, he arranged for a rendezvous with another woman. However, when she tried to back out, he roughs her up and ends up killing her. Now, he IS a horrible person, so he puts her in her car and pushes it off the road to make it look like an accident. A teammate of his (Marc Singer) puts two and two together and confronts Rainey...and Rainey kills him! Later, when Barnaby Jones begins investigating the case, Rainey arranges to set up a fellow ballplayer...making it look like this other man is the killer! Nice guy, huh?

The biggest reason to see this is to see Nolte and Singer before they were established stars. The plot also is believable considering the behaviors of too many pampered pro athletes. Add to that good writing and acting, and this show is well worth your time.

MARRIAGE AND A LITTLE MURDER ON THE SIDE?
tcchelsey8 December 2023
It's a soap opera theme, the young married guy with a secret gal friend, but watch how it snowballs!

Barry Oringer wrote this episode, who later was behind the prime time soap opera series HOTEL. It all kind of made sense.

Here, we get to see two great actors, and early in their careers. Handsome Nick Nolte plays Rainey, a star football player who is married but falls for another woman. She balks and he kills her, naturally making it look like an accident. But there's more. Enter Marc Singer (as Tanner), a close friend, who stumbles onto the crime and he's next!

Nolte actually began his career as a model, before becoming a film superstar. Singer also had tremendous success in both movies and tv, particularly on DALLAS.

Excellent supporting cast with big and tall Simon Scott (playing Paul), best as judges and generals, and Sheila Larkin as Nolte's wife. Sheila, who retired a few years ago, is known for her many appearances on X FILES.

Leslie H. Martinson, behind such cop shows as CHIPS and MANNIX, handles the cast well but there is one goof. Rainey leaves his finger prints on the murder weapon, also mentioned in production notes! Hmmm?

The last reviewer also wrote about Barnaby drinking lots of milk. The situation here is that Barnaby was not "your ordinary" private eye, although he did have a shot of whiskey a few episodes back! Typically, he did not smoke or drink, much like MANNIX and CANNON. Even COLUMBO was a chain cigar smoker, right? And he probably didn't swear! He also seemed to work more in the daytime, and not a night owl like his contemporaries. Early to bed and early to rise! True, in all honesty, it may have been stretching it... but its what made Barnaby a bit different and refreshing.

Nolte doesn't stand a chance in this one! And that's all I will say! Keep the tea kettle going.

First episode (#14) of 1975. HAPPY NEW YEAR. SEASON 3 remastered CBS dvd box set.

Another Predictable Barnaby Jones Plot, Ho, Hum, Boring
WYAdams30 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Once again we have a murder, this time accidental, followed by the all too predictable second murder to cover up the first. And as always there is the final shootout where Barnaby makes one of his miraculous hip shots wounding, but not killing the bad guy. Once again he pushes milk, this time Betty and two others chime in about its virtues. I'd say tha American Dairy Association got their moneys worth this episode.

I checked the yes button for spoilers, but truthfully, the plot is so predictablle that it is almost impossible have spoilers.
