John Dullaghan and Larry Gelman

"Contempt" marks the fourth of six appearances from John Dullaghan's Ray Brewer, a former derelict now working with the Salvation Army, reporting a series of thefts involving both cash and food. Lt. Melinda Holly (Maggie Brown, first of two) would prefer the police not be involved, but is convinced by Wojo's persistence. Larry Gelman (second of four) plays Sidney Bouton, who objects to not being served at a restaurant that apparently caters only to the physically attractive ("all I wanted was an omelet!"). The staff even took to comparing him to the Elephant Man ("I admit that I'm no Gavin MacLeod!"). Barney's day in court involves him testifying in an $8 million cocaine case, which concludes with him being cited for contempt for not revealing his confidential source. At the end of the day, he reports to Officer Perelli (Jack Murdock, first of two), checking in with an unseen cellmate (William Windom, second of three), who doesn't like to be ignored. To be continued...

One of the best episodes

One of the funniest episodes was when Barney was put in jail with a cell mate but all you heard was his voice. William Windom played the cell mate and had such a droll but commanding voice. His one on one with Barney was done with such a dry sense of humor. He acted like top dog on the cell block with Barney and there were times when you felt Barney was a little afraid of him even though we/he couldn't see him. This episode was done in two parts. His partners at the station didn't want to put him in jail but they had no choice. I thought this episode was done very well with great writing and very dry but funny lines. You almost had empathy for the cell mate but the bossy way he talked you knew he was guilty even before going to trial. Thoroughly enjoyed the banter between Barney and the cell mate. Good episode.
