Fish is dead and Yemana's coffee fizzes
kevinolzak4 March 2014
"Discovery" has so much comic invention, it cries out for repeat viewing. Jack De Leon makes his third of eight appearances as petty thief Marty Morrison, now joined by Ray Stewart as his partner Darryl Driscoll (first of four), who reports being victimized by a rogue cop extorting money to avoid harassment. In the first of his six appearances, Philip Sterling plays attempted suicide Mr. Buckholtz, who refuses to go to Bellevue, carrying on a conversation with Barney while sitting underneath Chano's desk (the Bellevue attendant is played by Johnny LaMotta, his first of three appearances). Fish undergoes his most difficult task, paying a visit to personnel to prove he's not dead! According to their computer, he is 'deceased' (Barney: "it's probably a mistake!" Fish: "I wonder!"). Darryl to Fish: "you know you look exactly like Boris Karloff?" Fish: "that's because we're both dead!" And Jack Soo's Yemana, absent the last four episodes, contributes priceless commentary throughout, including two about his coffee. When Mr. Buckholtz makes a failed attempt to escape, Harris informs him that he's not walking out of a coffee shop, it's a police station (Yemana: "and we've got the coffee to prove it!"). Finally, this exchange between Barney and Yemana- Barney: "your coffee's a funny color" Yemana: "it's maroon!" Barney: "how do you get to be maroon?" Yemana: "it's the color spectrum-you mix brown coffee with yellow water, and you got maroon!" Barney: "why is it fizzing?" Yemana: "it's the air sneakin' out of the cracks of the cup!"
