Lovely Performance by Neva Patterson
lchadbou-326-2659218 April 2021
Another satisfying early Ben Casey episode, here pivoting on the showboating presence of veteran tough guy movie star Chester Morris. But as often happens it is a supporting performance, that of Neva Patterson, which haunts the story. Patterson, likely best known to today's viewers as the fiancee of the Cary Grant character in"An Affair to Remember," plays the boss' secretary, an elegant and efficient businesswoman who has been well paid for her so far 14 years of service though perhaps taken for granted, and who harbors an unspoken affection for a man who is otherwise portrayed as arrogant and mean spirited. The character is a bit reminiscent of some of the secretary roles played in 1930s Warners films by the character actress Aline MacMahon, though hers tended to be more wisecracking and sarcastic.

I'm a doctor not a water boy!

****SPOILERS**** With a tumor located somewhere in his brain that can very well be malignant businessman Walter Tyson, Chester Morris,is more interested in keeping control of his financial empire then saving his life. Finally forced to seek help Tyson plays it close to his vest in keeping his medical condition from the public as well as his share holders. Who with his strange and bazaar behavior are ready to vote him out-in an hostile takeover-as their company's CEO. What's even worse is that Tyson's old lady or wife Wiletta, Shirley Ballard,is planning to divorce him and take off together with his sleazy business partner George Baxter,George N. Neise, with what's still left of his company after he's eventually kicked out by his shear-holders for not being up to the job! If the fact comes out that Tyson is suffering from a serious brain disorder-a life threatening tumor-the stories of his both life and financial empire going kaput will become a reality not a rumor!

With all this including the brain tumor on his mind the once tough and take no prisoners businessman Walter Tyson goes into a dream like state world of unreality that only his equally tough and take no BS brain surgeon Doctor Ben Casey, Vincent Edwards, can get the poor and confused man out of. But first he's got to get Tyson to agree to go under the knife-surgery-as soon as possible before there's no hope left for Dr. Casey to even operate.

***SPOILERS*** Taking all the abuse that the bull headed Tyson can dish out and giving back as good as he gets from him leads Tyson to gain a deep respect for Dr. Casey in that unlike those he usually deals with he's not at all intimidated by him. Even though Tyson is the biggest contributer to the hospital that Dr. Casey works for the good doctor still tells him like it is even with his job on the line. With Tyson finally realizing that his life is far more important that his financial empire he agrees with his loyal secretary Neva Patterson's, Frederica Warren, urging to get his head fixed and probed and straighten out by Dr. Casey in order for him to see if in fact the tumor is cancerous! And for that Tyson comes out a lot richer then poorer for doing it. And most of all Tyson is now free of his cheating wife as well as partner-Wiletta & Baxter-who only ended up with each other, which is a fate worse then death itself, instead of his financial empire that they, in how both greedy & stupid they were, helped to destroy!
