Simple plot that plays out well
kfo94944 August 2012
This show turned out to be a surprisingly good episode as we see a teenager Lud Akley (Richard Dreyfuss) being left in charge of his much younger brother and sister as the single mother goes to Nevada to work at a saloon. The mother has left Lud in charge as she tries to bring money into the household so that they will not lose the home.

Lud gets caught for shoplifting but Heath agrees to pay for the items and will take him back to his mother. Upon arriving at the house he finds the small children alone and hungry. He takes the two children, along with a upset Lud, back to the Barkley Ranch so they can be fed. But Lud wants no help and makes mischief around the ranch as he tries to get the small children back to their house inside Stockton.

Lud had not been told what his mother was doing in Nevada other than where she was staying in case of an emergency. So Lud steals from the Barkley house and sells a music box to a prospector for the exact amount of money to get him to Nevada.

When he arrives he is ashamed to find that his mother is a lady of the night. His life goes further down when the prospector -he sold the music box to - is found dead and evidence points to Lud as the killer.

Jarrod agrees to defend him in court but Lud will not offer any explanation about meeting the prospector. And this becomes the plot of the show as Lud could be hanged if found guilty of the crime.

A surprisingly good episode for a simple plot. The story was interesting and by the end of the show the viewer feels better for watching.

Good show.

Good fun

Warning: Spoilers
A really enjoyable episode featuring the youthful Richard Dreyfuss and the talented Diane Ladd as his mom.

Lud is mad at mama Muriel because she up and left him in charge (at 16) of his little siblings, Cecilia and Chucky.

Lud (Dreyfuss) takes a valuable music box (encrusted with jewels) from Victoria's living room table and sells it to a wannabe gold prospector - who has really found - albeit a bit late - the real thing.

Lud manages to find his mom - hustling, he thinks - in an old Saloon in the town of Elko, Nevada.

There is the expected happy ending and the acting is superb.

Young Richard Dreyfuss shines

A very early turn in Richard Dreyfuss's career (he was about 20 when he did this), and a very strong one. As Lud, he oldest of three children, he has to take over when their mother (DIane Ladd)takes off and he tries to hide the fact that she is gone, but the Barkleys find out. They try to take them in but Lud will have none of it. It turns out he knows where his mother has gone and he goes to get her, but finds her working as a saloon girl. Shattered, he goes home to find he's implicated in the murder of a prospector, but even Jarrod can't get him to talk to defend himself.

Very strong acting all around, and it needed to be. This is a tough episode, well worth the watch.

A boy, his mother and the Barkleys

Warning: Spoilers
Another very good season 2 episode of The Big Valley is this one that features a young Richard Dreyfuss.

What I really love about this episode, and I will not give away the outcome of the plot, is that there are two separate story lines running at the same time. We see an old gold prospector (J. Pat O'Malley) as well as a teen boy whose mother has disappeared. The stories are not at all connected in the first half, and a murder neatly brings them together. The boy has taken his two younger siblings to live with the Barkleys, and while he attempts to runaway and locate the mother, he gets caught up in murder.

At first, I thought it was going to turn out the kids were orphaned and the mother had died. But she turns up very much alive and in a most interesting way. Diane Ladd plays the mother. The scene where she and Victoria confront the boy in jail about whether he had anything to do with the killing is very powerful.

This offering of 'The Big Valley' was directed by Paul Henreid, and I've always found his episodes to be among the strongest. He brings out the human predicaments faced by the characters.

Proud young man
bkoganbing22 February 2021
In this Big Valley episode, Diane Ladd has up and left her children and the oldest Richard Dreyfuss has taken to stealing to feed the younger two. When Lee Majors catches him, they all get taken to the Barkley ranch until their mother can be found.

When a music box with considerable sentimental value is taken it's Dreyfuss who is the thief. But when old prospector J. Pat O'Malley is murdered Dreyfuss is suspected.

Future Oscar winner Dreyfuss turns in a fine performance as a most proud young man. So doe Diane Ladd as the errant mom.

It's rather obvious who the murderer is so there really is no suspense. Still the presence of Ladd and Dreyfuss are enough to recommend this story.
