The day the fish fingers came out

Warning: Spoilers
Mike's friend, Jeremy, specialises in fixing broken kitchen appliances and selling them dirt cheap. When Jean suggests they purchase a freezer from him Sid readily agrees. Unfortunately, it is older than Methuselah, and opens only when you raise your arm like Hitler and thump the lid. Everyone finds different things to put in it - Mike his jars of boufflebaba cold cream ( he is now working as salesman for a cosmetics company ), Betty from next door her fur stole ( to kill the moths ), Sally's ice creams, and the thousand or so fish fingers purchased that day by Jean. Sid is horrified: "I like eating them, I do not like living with them!". The freezer is put in his and Jean's bedroom. To accommodate it, Jeremy has had to take out the entire window, meaning Sid and Jean are exposed to the elements for the duration of the night. The monstrosity is finally relocated to the garage, but then two new problems develop. Sid's petrol-free car is stolen by cunning thieves who have brought along their own fuel, and the fuse box is not strong enough to power the freezer. Mike breaks the seal on the company fuse and puts in a stronger one. This action attracts the attention of the local electricity board...

This hilarious episode ( by Dave Freeman ) commenced the sixth and final season, and was reputedly Sid's personal favourite. It is easy to see why. It gives him some marvellous lines as the freezer causes one headache after another. Diana Coupland also shines too. When Sid tells her the company fuse is not theirs to replace, she replies: "Well if it belongs to the electricity board what's it doing in our garage?".

In the summer of 1982, I.T.V. cobbled together a season of archive programmes to replace coverage of the Olympics ( which had fallen through at the eleventh hour ), allowing viewers to see vintage sitcoms such as 'Doctor At Large', 'Man About The House', 'George & Mildred' for the first time in years. 'The Frozen Limit' was selected to represent 'Bless This House'. Writing in 'The Sunday People', critic Nina Myskow said the episode made her laugh out loud and she was not a fan.

Funniest moment - Sid reaching into the freezer for an ice cream, only to produce Betty's frozen fur, which clings to his arm as though alive!

Second funniest moment - with the window in the bedroom gone, Sid does not wish to freeze to death, so he goes to bed looking like Scott of the Antarctic!
